3 comments about Samsung Digimax L74 Wide 7.2MP Digital Camera with 4x Wide Angle Advance Shake Reduction Optical Zoom (Black).
  1. I use this camera for Paragliding and shoot pics back at customers who go tandem with me. So the remote is a key accessory for me. however, it is not available yet. if anyone has an idea of how to obtain one of these remotes please let me know, the camera is really quite challenging without the remote. it would be very nice if you could "set" remote and not go back to the default every time its powered off.
The wide angle is great, as is the bottomless video function.
please let me know about the remote, thanks... Drew

  2. I wish more attention would be given to the still relatively few digicams that have true wide-angle lenses. This is a much better effort from Samsung on a wide-angle zoom digicam. I previously had the A55W, which had severe limitations and useability issues. I also have the 6-megapixel Panasonic FX01, an excellent wide-angle digicam, which does have more noticeable image noise than this Samsung but still outshines it in some areas.
The Samsung has a very nice build feel and is much faster than the A55W overall. The A55W had a terrible long preflash delay for all flash shots that could not be turned off. The L74 Wide is much speeder in this regard, though I suspect face detection slows the autofocus time a bit, and if you turn on red-eye reduction while shooting, it adds processing time after the photo is taken (as does the ASR shake-reduction feature, since the antishake is done in post-processing in camera). The movie mode allows for very long shoot time, and does allow zooming while recording, but the sound is muted during the actual zooming of the lens, so this will introduce brief passages of complete silence into the video any time you zoom.
The touch screen works reasonably well and is probably no more fiddly than some multi-button setups.
I wish there were an external charger for the battery so it wouldn't have to charge in camera, which would make carrying an extra battery more convenient.
Picture quality overall (at maximum size and jpg quality) is very good, still looking like a small-sensor digicam as opposed to a DSLR or larger-sensor camera, but noise is well controlled in most Auto ISO situations. Flash exposures are also well exposed and don't suffer from overexposure with close subjects.
The World Tour Guide function is quite a gimmick but fun to play with, though I have found a quirk where it only works if you remove the SD card from the camera. It seems the camera will only recognize one "disk" at a time, so if an SD card is in the camera, the World Tour Guide program will start, but the buttons for countries are inactive. If I remove the SD card, the camera will use the internal memory for photos and the World Tour Guide will then work. Samsung did not respond to my customer-service e-mail. I assume a firmware upgrade/fix would resolve this. Any hints from anyone who has used the camera?

  3. Having owned several Olympus digital cameras and also used Nikon, Sony & Canon cameras, using this Samsung was an awful experience. It has so many odd features you have to wonder if anyone on their design team ever thought to try out their competition's cameras. Here are the problems I have with this camera.

    1. Wrist Strap. For starters the wrist strap holder is a little metal bar that sticks out from the camera into your right hand when using the camera. Every other camera I've owned has it recessed so you don't feel it. At least they should have made it easy to remove so that it doesn't stick into your hand.

    2. Batteries. Figuring out how to get the battery in was annoying. I've never had to look at the directions to put a battery in any of the hundreds of battery-operated devices we own. The description said this camera uses AA batteries - it does not. And I could not find anywhere to buy a spare battery. I gave this camera a try only because I thought it would run on AAs and I need to have spares with me because I use my camera to photograh my work in client homes.

    3. Touch screen. At first I this was a neat idea. In reality, you have to use a STYLUS PEN to operate it!!! I tried using my finger nails but it did operate properly. When I'm taking pictures the last thing I want to do is worry about finding the stylus pen and hold on it. There isn't even a place in the camera to stick the pen like Palm pilots & Treos have.

    4. Transfering Photos to PC. It took about a half hour before we finally got to actually take pictures with. I've never had to look at an instruction book for a camera to get to the point of taking the first picture. Once we finally did get some taken getting to the PC was a pain in the neck. My husband is a computer engineer and he had trouble! Turns out you can't move the pix directly to your computer with a USB cable from the camera's memory like you can with every other camera out there. You can't even do it from the disk. You have to install their software and use their software to make the transfer!! They plaster the camera instructions with warnings that you will lose your photos if you don't use their software. This is ridiculous. You should be able to easily & quickly transfer the photos to ANY PC anywhere with that disk. Even worse, you have to transfer the photos from camera memory to the disk, then you can move it to your computer.

    5. Picture Quality. As dumb as all these design errors are, I might have lived with it and not returned the camera if the picture quality were at least as good as my 200$ Olympus. The photos all had a kind of dark and grainy or fuzzy quality to them that I'm just not used to. Kind of like how printed photos taken with ISO 400 or 800 film look. I use photos of my work on my website (see www.neatandsimple.com) and in e-books. The pictures dont' have to be perfect, but they need to at least look good enough to see the work clearly. That's means I need a camera that takes good indoor shots. The wide angle lens feature is awesome, but there are a lot more choices out there as of October 1, 2007. Olympus Olympus Stylus FE-290 7MP Digital Camera with 4x Wide Angle Optical Zoom (Black)just came out with theirs at about the same price so I'm going to try that one.

  1. I purchased this camera a couple of weeks ago. It's my first digital camera, and I must say that I am extremely satisfied with its features and performance. I even purchased the long life battery to go with it. I find it's battery life indicator to be helpful. The photo quality is exceptional depending on the resoloution level you set it at. The use of floppy disk or memory stick gives you even more options. It also has an indicator for the amount of room left on the disk for more pictures. I highly recommend this camera.

  2. We bought this camera because we just had a baby and wanted to email pics to all of our close relatives from out of town. It has been a great fit for what we wanted it for. We like that fact that the camera comes with so many features and is easy to use. Black and white baby shots are great. The menu is easy to use (my 77 year-old grandmother used it). If you are looking for a camera that saves pictures on floppy and memory stick, this is the camera for you. None of the other Mavica cameras have the built in memory stick slot, a big plus for the 92.

We just wish it was a little cheaper because the megapixels are lower than other similarly priced cameras.

  3. I did a lot of research before purchasing a good digital camera(I had a really cheap one before this one). The FD92 just excelled in every aspect. It has 8x optical zoom (look at the difference between digital and optical zoom is a good thing to know). It has the capability of storing images in both a Floppy disk and a Memory stick(128Mg Memory stick available now) which depending on resolution can satisfy all your needs(Max res on FD(6 pics) Max Res on Mem Stick (300 Pics) Good Res 640x480 (30 on FD and 1500 on MS). Besides all the comparisons I made with other cameras from Nikkon, Olympus, and Cannon, I purchased from the mavica product line since my Auto Shop uses them line... they abuse an FD90 day in and day out and it still works perfectly... this was one of the major factors that made me purchase it. After I bought the camera and started using it I was very happy with my investementet ... My wife picked it up and starting taking pictures without even reading the manual and she loved it... which is a first when it comes to electronic "toys". I recomend this camera to anyone in the market for one.

  4. I have owned this camera for over 4 years. When I purchased it, there were 4 major reasons:

    1. Ability to take digital pictures.
    2. Ability to record video WITH sound.
    3. 3x optical zoom. This means there are physical lenses doing the magnifying - this is better than "digital" zoom.
    4. It could write to floppy.

Well, I still love the first three, and could do without #4. I can count on one hand the number of times I've used the floppy abilities of this camera.

That said, I have been very impressed with the abilities of this camera. First, it could do video with sound long before most cameras, even though the clips are short (15 seconds). Second, it takes a great picture, even when printing them.

This camera is SOLID. I've seen quite a few people get small cameras and they drop them, and that's it.

The only complaint I have is about the size, but I knew that going into it...

Every connector, input/output slot, etc. still works the way it was designed. I am considering selling this, and will probably buy another Sony due to the quality of this camera.

  5. I have enjoyed this camera and the quality of its work. However, I wanted to know if you can buy a memory stick for it and use it only? I did not get one in the box when I purchased it, but would like to use it instead of the floppy disk on occasions. If you have the name of the disk, please let me know. I have received error messages with the Sandisk Pro and the Magic Gate Memory Stick Pro.

  1. This camera is great but only for a short time...have already had it repaired once and now once again it has just died on us and repairs are more expensive than new ones....do not buy this camera if you want it to last.

  2. A year later you can get better quality on your cell phone.

No wonder Kodak is in the toilet.

  3. I just want to add to the already available reviews: I agree with most what has been said here. Picture quality is quite below average. The same scene, just seconds apart, and you might get a different coloring in the picture (e.g. picture one is a little reddish, picture two is a little bluish). This is not too bad, though, if you just want a "I-visited-the-Brandenburg-Gate-with-Grandma" picture. I do use a Canon Digital Rebel XT for pictures that I want to turn out nice, but most of the times, the Kodak isn't too bad. If it is a little bad, mostly in low light conditions.
However: This camera is superior in sturdiness. I have taken it everywhere. I take it skiing and I fall with it in my jacket pocket, I drop it - anything. So it will probably make it a nice camera for kids (if you can explain to them that they need to wait the 0.7 seconds until it makes the "click" sound). I wouldn't buy it here, though. Go to ebay, you can get one for $30 there.

  4. I don't care if it had 100x zoom. That's not gonna matter if you cant tell what you were taking a picture of anyways. Its good for some family photos, but only if they're within 5 feet of you. The zoom function is pretty bad. Its a fun camera for a kid though. The price is just about right at about 100 dollars. It is simple to use and download off of. The zoom is just horrible though.

  5. Good Grief! What do you expect out of a low-priced camera! No, this is not a professional
let's shoot the Playmate of the Month camera. You can get those for around a thousand or so USD.
This is a versatile-use-it-out of the box camera for people just getting into digital photograhy or for those who
who want a digital camera without selling the farm. I've shot with one for about two years under some demanding
conditions. It has never failed even after it was dropped and took two bounces on top of the highest mountain in Maine.
It has always performed better than I was led to believe it would. It is not cheaply made even though it is made of plastic--it's sturdy
--no hinges have snaaped off--the lense hasn't dropped off.
Look..the camera snobs are writing misleading reviews about this camera and others. Give the people looking for a camera a break. No!
This not a Nikon, Cannon, or a Leica. It is one hell of an inexpensive digital camera that makes picture taking fun.

  1. This camera arrived not working properly. I sent it to Kodak's warranty company and it was sent back as "repaired". I then stored the "repaired" camera for about 3 weeks till I used it again. It was not repaired and again did not work properly. I returned the camera again and was denied warranty. Not only that but Kodak's repair company wanted the same price to repair this camera again as buying an updated version. They also required rediculous return shipping and "evaluation" fees - $35 to get a unusable camera back. So I completely lost out. This was the very worst experience I have ever had with a company. Kodak has lost my business forever.

  2. I researched extensively before I bought this camera. I wanted the most for the least- the most features for the least amount of money! And I got it. I wanted a large LCD screen, 6 megapixels, a light, small model, that didn't require batteries, and that was under $300.

Pros: Great battery life- lasts a long time on a single charge and gives you adequate low batter warning. Even when the warning comes one, pictures can still be taken. The first couple of times I used it, I tried to let the battery drain itself out before I charged it again, as I have heard that that makes the battery last longer.

fast start up and picture speed- It starts up very quickly and the downtime between pictures is minimal.

small size but big screen- I could carry it in my pocket (even thought i don't!) and it's very lightweight- but the LCD screen is still substantial. The screen is not as big as some, but much bigger than others!

picture quality- pictures I ordered that were taken from this camera looked amazing! the colors were sharp and the pictures were clear

preset picture settings- I love the preset picture settings for different types of picture taking situations- i.e. bright snow scenes, bright beach scenes, candlelight, scenery. It lets me adjust the settings on the camera without actually having to do anything!

Cons: The only con I can come up with is that it doesn't take great pictures at night or in low light. most of the time it takes better pictures with the flash off and to get a good low light picture i have to fiddle with the options a bit. There is no good night setting, but that is really my only complaint!

  3. I've had this camera for about 15 months and really loved it at first. I was upgrading from an older camera that had seen better days, so this one seemed almost magical in comparison.

    Pros:

1)The LCD screen is very nice.

2)Some of the features come in handy.

    Cons:

1)It took great pictures at first, but then the pictures were very dark and blurry, for no reason. This is an off and on problem and doesn't make sense at all. From what I've read here, it happens often.

2)The software is a b!&@$. It completely takes over your computer! Instead of opening with Windows, the pictures on my computer started opening with the Kodak software, which is awkward at best. I wouldn't mind so much if I was trying to edit the pictures but it gets annoying when you're just looking at pictures. After searching their website for instructions on how to change that, I finally had to email them for directions (trying to change the installation didn't do anything to fix this, hence the email for directions). My computer is extremely slow if the software is running.

3)As another reviewer mentioned, the USB connection to the camera is very strange, for no apparent reason other than to get you to purchase the docking system. You can't just set the camera upright...that doesn't seem like that big of a deal, but for some reason it becomes one.

4)The volume on the video playback is very low. I've had it turned completely up and still can't hear it. Once the video is on the computer, it's perfectly fine. This is a pain when you are taking video to capture something said...you can't make sure it's correct.

5)I have noticed where the screws are starting to come loose on the bottom of the camera. Sure, I can screw them in but who wants to make sure the body of their camera is still together?

I think I will be selling my camera soon. I was hoping all this stuff was an easy fix but apparently the customer service isn't worth the hassle.

  4. I bought this camera 15 months ago and at first it worked great. I had an older model that my daughter dropped and was just past the warranty and it was going to cost $100 to fix so we opted to get a new and updated version for a few bucks more because it just wasn't worth fixing for so much money. The camera took nice enough basic pictures though I still had trouble with red eye, any pictures taken in low lighting came out dark, and enlarging shots after cropping made them grainy.

Then while taking some Easter photos of my girls the camera just went dead! I didn't drop it, or mistreat it having learned my lesson after the previous one! I kept getting an error message and thought it might be the battery so I bought a new one and tried that - still wouldn't work! The lend will not retract and the screen goes on for a few seconds and then goes black with an error message before shutting off! Of course it was going to be another $100+ to fix since it's past the warranty!

I have given up on Kodak! It's obvious that these cameras are not meant to last for long term and regular use! I have 2 small daughters and love taking pictures of them all the time! I was very disappointed that we could not get our Easter pictures this year!

Overall, if you're looking for a basic camera this is ok but beware after your warranty is up - these cameras are costly to fix!!

  5. Pros-
The camera is adorable and tiny, with the easiest to use menu system I've seen on a camera.

    Cons-
THE PICTURES!!! I had an old Kodak EasyShare that took great pictures. Unfortunately, it was stolen while I was on vacation and I bought this one. It takes terrible pictures! I can get decent shots outdoors in the bright sun, but anywhere else and they are dark and blurry, or with an unflattering flash. No matter how still I hold it, I get that stupid red hand.

Also, the body is falling apart, all the screws have fallen out.

5 comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1K 5MP Compact Digital Camera with 10x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Black).
  1. I've had this camera for over a year now & I absolutely love it! It is very easy to use, the 12.5x zoom is unbelievable & the resolution is beautiful. This camera is a bit thicker than most on the market these days, but I believe it gives you more to hold on to so your pictures are taken with a more steady, stable hand. This camera never fails to take an amazing photo.

  2. This is overall a wonderful camera, and I am glad that this was my first digital camera. It takes beautiful, detailed, sometimes breath-taking photos in good outdoor lighting (nature photos = wonderful). The 10x optical zoom packed into such a small package is outstanding. However, this camera is not the best at indoor/low-lighting photos. The photos are discernable, but there is a lot of noise in the photos. Recommended without hesitation for shooting photos on a vacation where the scenery and nature are the main draws, but recommended only with some trepidation where the goal is to capture people in nightclubs or hotel-room drinking binge.

  3. Bought this camera a couple of years ago and it is still working well. Great picture quality and so very easy to use. Will have an occasional slightly blurry pic, but for a simple to use camera I would def recommend.

  4. I own this camera since september2 2006, works just fine until less than a year after I got it starts to work all wrong when flash is used.
At outdoors is exceptional, great pictures when the light is good.
Bad really dark and black pictures at indoors when the place has low light. The flash forced on, and still the pictures came dark, because the flash shut way before the lens, a syncronization problem. And it's a pity because I was really pleased with it. But now I'm very dissapointed and I want to buy another camera because I can't trust the DMC-TZ1 anymore at nights or indoor situations, and I don't want to have a camera I can use just in some situations when daylight or good light is on.

  5. I love this camera! I had an old Sony Cybershot before, and it can't even hold a candle to Lumix's image stability, clarity, LOVELY Leica lens, and well, just about EVERYTHING this camera has to offer. Incredibly quick picture response, variety of modes to choose from, and just amazing! Hah, even the USB cable from my old Sony fits into the same slot as my Lumix :) And, I don't have to buy some rip-off "special" memory card that only fits Panasonic (I spent 50 dollars on a 1GB card for my Sony... So convenient that the 'special' Sony memory card cost 3x as much as regular 1GB memory cards...) I LOVE this camera! :)

5 comments about Olympus SP-510 Ultra Zoom 7.1MP Digital Camera with Digital Image Stabilized 10x Optical Zoom.
  1. Item was birthday pesent. Was delivered promptly and recipient told us he was satisfied with product.

  2. I have two other digital cameras, small Pentax Optio S and Panasonic DMC-LZ5.

This Olympus was big disappointment to me. Namely it's auto mode. I shoot almost
exclusively in Auto mode. That's not because I did not read the manual or
don't know what various parameters of the shot do. I do. But I auto-shoot because I shoot in haste and do not have time to play with manual parameters and take 20 shots
to select one. I am not photography professional and I am not going to be one.
And this is not professional camera anyway.

So quality of Auto mode picture is very impotant for me.
This camera has very poor decisions embedded in Auto mode automatics.
First, it decides sometimes to raise the ISO to 800 in the daylight conditions.
This results in bad grain and noise, not justified by the daylight conditions.

Another problem with Auto mode is very bad rendition of trees and green.
Rarely, trees and gree are rendered well, but this is rare exception.
Most times, trees and green is rendered dull, dark even in good
sunlight, unattractive. When I compare these colors to the vivid
and bright green trees taken by Panasonic in the same conditions, I
    am very disappointed.

Another dissatisfaction is not enough of attributed/tags that
the camera embeds into the JPEG files. It does not report which
    white balance mode was chosen.

Next problem is limited sharpness of images. The image as I see it
on the 1280x1024 computer screen is actuall what I'd from a 2MP camera.
When I increase the image x4 time, I almost always se fuzzyness. There is
always lack of details that makes me feel that even though there are 7 milllion
pixels in the sensors, either optics or some other element is limiting
actually shrapness of the image to actuall 2MP of detail.

Another discomfort is that in Auto mode, there is no possibility to
define any parameters like White Balance pr ISO. You cannot change them.
    Very strange and uncomfortable decision.

Bottom line: I am never buying another Olympus camera again.

  3. I have had the Olympus SP-510 UZ for about a year and I totally hate the camera. This is my third Olympus digital camera. My previous camera was a C-5050 which I loved, but it got a scratch on the lens so I got the SP-510.

With the SP-510 you have to avoid any of the auto or program settings, because the camera has a tendency to use the higher ASA ratings to solve low light problems. When it uses ASA ratings over 100 the images look totally crappy with so much jpg noise that you will just end up deleting all of them. So you have to use aperture/shutter or manual to have a chance at a decent picture, unless you are shooting in full sunlight.

The exposure is very often off, so be sure to check the images right away and bracket or reshoot the bad ones.

The white balance seems unreliable, so I end up shooting RAW most of the time so I can more easily correct when the color is totally off.

In short you have to be diligent to get decent pictures. If you are the least bit lazy, the camera will punish you with bad pictures.

There are still two things I like about the camera. One is the supermacro setting that lets you shoot very close bug and flower pictures. Second, the camera is powered by AA batteries, so you never are without power out in the boonies.

  4. Love this camera...easy to use but enough options for the more advanced users as wel...

  5. We were never able to take a decent picture, the light was deemed on all the pictures. We called support several times and they could not help us to resolve the issue. Olympus support staff were rude and did not help us. We returned the camera. We have bought two Canon cameras. One works beautiful, the other one is brand new and will see. We will not try Olympus again.

5 comments about HP Photosmart R847 8MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom.
  1. Very high quality construction, small, easy to use, multiple functions and controls, excellent pictures taken in variable light conditions, very good recharge battery life. In other words, the HP Photosmart R847 that I purchased to replace my very good, 8 year old Kodak, so far, is superbly excellent.

  2. This camera is a JOKE! Don't buy it unless you want all of your memories to look like they took place inside of a funhouse. I don't know what HP did with the lenses, but if you take a photo of a square object, the sides of it appear to "bend" or "bow" outward. It's sad because other than this one major flaw, this is an awesome and easy-to-use camera. The large and bright display is very impressive too. What a shame! It's back in the box, and will be returned today. I think next time I'll stick to a company that has experience with camera optics.

  3. So far, so good. I'm very happy with it esp. the video. Just press the button once to start and then once to stop. Sit the camera down and it keeps on recording. What I don't like is the fact that it will not import other photos from my computer to add to its slideshow. My Kodak can do that.

  4. This Camera is Excellent, Self explanatory in each mode you choose. So many built in options that you would mostly find in the software CD, I love the huge 3" screen and the built in zoom is very nice. My photo's look like professional takes. Best camera I've ever owned...Hint...A camera is only as good as you take care of it.

  5. I received my HP Photosmart R847 8MP digital camera for my birthday in May 2008. First the praise: R847 is indeed simple to use, and it's light, small and slim - a good pocket size, BUT...(see Disappointments). If you manage to find perfect focus on its "best" setting, this camera produces absolutely gorgeous images - you can zoom in and in and in (during edit, that is) and the details just get richer and yummier (in the blow-up in front of me I can count my kitten's eyelashes - beautiful!). Now the disappointment: this camera has ZERO battery life, since its first full charge and use - I am able to take and review 40 photos MAX on a full charge before it is depleted. I called HP about this the first week after I received the camera, and I was basically told "gee, tough luck" - but that they'd be delighted to sell me another battery, 50 dollars please. (VERY poor customer service experience.) R847 doesn't like to find focus on small objects. I particularly like spiders and bumblebees, but focus is very hit and miss, and usually several inches behind the object you want to capture. I just can't figure out the "sweet spot" - it seems pretty random. A tiny change in angle, lighting, etc and you lose focus again. Although, as I mentioned, this camera is a great pocket size, you can't carry it there because the stupid slide-down lens cover is SO easily flipped open. And then it sits in your pocket and GOES DEAD. Actually, that even happens in the carrying case occasionally, if you knock or bump it. This is a MAJOR design flaw. It needs a catch on the cover to prevent the accidental nudge-open. I love the image quality, but half the time I can't even take photos because R847 is stone dead. I would not buy another camera of this design, and I would not recommend it for others to purchase.
