  1. This is my first camera and really have much expectation about making a good investment. And what can I say, I am very happy that I had chosen this camera, its image quality is very good and if you use the 12-megapixel photos will have an excellent presentation on the details, the video is very good can see very clearly and sharpness. I can only say THANK YOU SONY!!

  2. I bought this more expensive camera hoping its quality would be better then the canon I tried about a week or two before but it ends up actually being worse. Pixelation occurs on almost all pictures on the LCD and when you upload it to your computer. My much older casio (6mp from around 2004) still took better pictures then this camera. It also doesn't take what I thought was a standard memory card size

  3. Bought this camera a few months ago to replace a 4 year old Canon Elph. I'm generally happy with it considering the price, and C-Net gave it very good reviews. Had I known about it I would have bought the DSC-H20/B 10.1 instead, because this camera really isn't that much smaller.

+Price to feature ratio is the best out there
+Smile Detection works better than any other camera I've seen. This has been a great feature for capturing my camera shy toddler.
    +Picture quality is pretty high.
+Video quality is pretty high, and I don't mind not being able to zoom.

-Auto focus is an absolute must. I could just snap with my old elph and the quality would still be pretty good. With this camera you have to use the focus.
-Picture button is really annoying. It's pretty hard to focus without accidentally snapping a pic. The button itself is too small. I thought I could live with it, but it's pretty annoying.
-Zoom button is a bit of a pain as well. It's on the back of the camera as opposed to near the snap button like on other cameras.
-Can't zoom on video. I knew this when I bought, but I don't use the video feature very much.
-Pretty bulky camera. Atleast 30% bigger than my old elph.

Generally the picture quality is good, but the ease of use is poor. I think sony just wanted to be the first to get HD video in a point & shoot camera of this class, and released it quickly without working out the kinks. Unfortunately this happened at the time when I desperately needed a new camera. I'm happy with the picture and video quality, but now that this camera has a lot of competition, I would not buy it again.

  4. Beware, if you like this camera buy it only if you believe you will never have to get anything fixed. Sony's customer service/relations is surprisingly terrible. I sent a product in for a superficial fix (at sony's request as part of a recall), I got it back with the lens not working. Understandable, it happens. But sony refused to fix it unless I paid for it or produced my proof of purchase to show it was still under warranty. After 3 hours speaking to various people over the course of two weeks (so it was not just one random person, but seems to be policy), Sony insisted that they would not fix the camera, they basically said 'the camera has a problem and we don't fix anything for free without a proof of purchase, regardless of circumstances'. Blew me away, they would not consider that they could have been at fault, that I would not have sent camera in unless they had asked me to in the first place. Customer relations and marketing have to get together and talk, marketing is spending millions to get me to buy all sorts of high margin products (playstation, flat screens, audio equipment, video cameras, etc) and customer service blows it all away over a fifty dollar fix.

  5. Bought this for my girlfriend, and now wish I had one. Great point and shoot camera

  1. Love JUST about everything about my little red camera. The only concern I have is regarding the latch cover over where it connects to the computer. It seems a little flimsy and will be careful when when I use the cable.

  2. My first generation digital Canon camera final gave up after lots of heavy use and abuse. In looking for a replacement there were so many positive reviews on the SD780 that I wondered if it was some sort of marketing gimmick. Well, I liked the styling, the specs, and the price so I thought I'd take a chance on it and can now see why others were so enthusiastic.

To be honest when I first opened the box the camera was about the size of a deck of cards and was quite smaller than I expected. I wondered if I could even work the buttons. No worries. The size grew on me (if you will excuse the pun) and although the power button is smaller than I would prefer, the rest of the controls can be manipulated comfortably. I bought the gold color camera and think it's beautiful.

For starters the camera is pretty intuitive if you just want to jump into it, but I recommend studying the manual at some point to really understand the finer points and incredible features. By the way, unlike others, this manual is very well written and useful. You can also download a pdf version from the Canon website. The "auto" mode is a no-brainer, but using the varied programmed settings is pretty easy. I like the fact that a particular program function has a plain English title to go with the icon since icons always confuse me. I don't take much video, but it worked amazingly well for a small camera. The clarity and colors of the still photos were a huge improvement from my previous camera. I'm still learning and playing though.

One of the big features for me is the digital macro function. I use my camera extensively in business and often need to take macro shots of components. I was blown away by this capability. It was better than my macro lenses on my old SLR 35mm cameras. Just read the manual instructions first.

I was surprised that it didn't come with a memory card so I ordered a 4GB which is adequate for my needs. I do recommend a case and the LCD screen protector that will protect the display from scratches, fingerprints and is supposed to reduce glare. With the understanding that there is not much real estate on this camera, my improvement wish list would be for a larger power button, a better access door to the USB/HDMI ports, and a plug in charger so you don't have to take the battery out. Bottom line is that I am really enjoying this camera and have no hesitation to recommend it with the understanding that it is small.

  3. Hi All,
I love taking pictures, and I'm pretty good at it.
Before I bought this camera, I had the previous version -very wonderful. I loved everything about it. It made great photos. Then in December I decided it was time to try the new generation, which to me sounded like it would be even better than the one I had. I was so excited!
Well... I've really tried to love my new camera. Really. But nope, the love connection is just not gonna happen.
The quality of the pictures is not good at all.
The quality of the video is ok, but there is a lot of noise.
What I hate the most about it, is that I have no control in the automatic mode. I know, it's automatic, d'uh, but sometimes I don't want to mess around with the white balance and such, so I enjoy just taking my camera out and taking an "easy" picture in automatic mode. This won't happen with this one. I love taking macro pics, and it just won't work well in the automatic mode with this camera. I missed so so so many good shots just because the camera couldn't figure out that I wanted to take a macro picture. It's so frustrating when that happens!
The manual mode sucks too. Even after setting the colors, it looks crappy.
Anyway, I feel like I'm talking too much now and I should probably get to the point...
My point is: if you like the previous version, keep it!
Or, if you don't care about taking nice pictures and just want to take "so so" pictures, buy it!.
But for people who enjoy nice and good quality shots, this is not the camera for you.
Now I'm trying to sell it so I can get another camera...! It even makes me feel bad that someone is going to buy it!
    Hope this helps!

  4. Alright,

First off, I am not a pro photographer. I use a Rebel XTi, and a Leica D Lux 3, so i'm not exactly using top grade shooters. I just like to have decent pictures is all.

So, with that aside, I will say that this camera is absolutely excellent to just have on you at all times. If you are looking for insane DSLR quality pictures, obviously you should be looking elsewhere. For people who can deal with some noise here and there, its totally perfect. I'm not a camera buff that's going to nit-pick this camera. I am an average person that uses a camera everyday. Ease of use is great. Menu's, changing settings, video are all easably changable. Maybe someone with bigger hands might refute this, but it fits/feels fine in my hand.

To be honest, the noise all the way up to 800 is actually pretty good. Again, it's NOT a high end point and shoot. But for $200, it out performs my Leica in the noise department.
How often do you go above 800 anyway? I know even in the lowest of light, i'm either not using this camera if I want a printable shot, or you can set the exposure to be less, then set the flash settings accordingly and it's alright.

AF is pretty quick, not say G11 fast. But with moving targets, a few days of practice should warrant you the abilities to feel comfortable of trying. This is probably the only draw back. Then again, that's why I have a DSLR for action and artsy stuff.

Overall, for a camera that is inexpensive, easy to you, and very light weight this is an awesome deal. I am very happy with this camera, and so is my fiance who I originally purchased it for.

  5. I bought this camera for my wife to document our new born baby.

The main thing I noticed was that the picture quality was not up to par with my old SD500 camera. Really dissapointed.

On a positive note, the video quality is really good and in HD.

Cool size, but I actually thought the bigger. It's almost too small, I would have bought a bigger camera if I new the correct size.

  1. light weight and very cute looking......great quality photos.....however, the battery and memory card cover is very flimsy and feels like it could break with very little force. My older canon's cover worked better and felt more heavy duty.

  2. We just took this camera on an extended trip abroad and were totally delighted with it. It made our old camera that we took along for backup look mediocre. Image stabilization is very good, exposure in low lighting was impressive, and automatic settings worked well to give us impressive photos. The only surprise was that there's no selection for image quality to control the size of the files.

  3. ...this camera is a hard-core battery addict! I can use it for "maybe" an hour and the batteries are dead! This happens with or without the view screen on. I either need to get a ton of rechargeable batteries or a power cord!

The pictures are beautiful! I use the macro mode for taking pictures of jewelry and they come out crisp and clear. I'm not a shutterbug by any means so it took me a while to figure out why they were coming out so HUGE.

If the batteries would last longer I'd love this camera!

  4. Great camera, easy to use, attractive design. Timely delivery. Just wish it had more memory on the memory card.

  5. Takes great pictures. The quality is fantanstic. The camera its self is fun and easy to use with alot of great features. Love it. I recommend buying this product.

  1. I decided to return this camera after spending a week with it on my vacation to Florida. I wanted to get a point and shoot with decent video recording. Those flip video HD cameras are nice and small, but no optical zoom, so I went with this instead. The video recording only worked half of the time. I kept getting errors saying the speed of my card was too slow and it would stop recording. I was using an 8gb Transcend class 6 sdhc card. Very disappointed.

  2. The only con is that their space-saving video format, AVCHD is not a very widely supported standard. The videos won't sync with iPhoto, for instance. You have to either use enormous MPEG video or manually copy the video files from the camera's SD card. Both formats look great, though, and it's nice that they have an option.

  3. I received this camera as a Xmas present. Given what I had read about it, I was really excited about getting the ZS3. But when I made my first video, I noticed an extremely loud camera noise as it zoomed. I called Panasonic to report this problem. You can see an example of this noise by check out this video here: [...]. I was told that this noise is normal and if I carefully read the warranty, I could see that Panasonic was not responsible for camera noise. But, as you can see, if you watched the video, this noise seemed extreme. So we returned it to Costco where it was originally purchased and got a new DMC-ZS3. This camera had the same problem. So I decided that the noise was normal, but I was very disappointed with this aspect of the camera. I then sent a video to another owner of the same camera and he said that the noise I was experiencing was about 10x what he observed in his own videos. So I called Panasonic again and after a very long discussion, they offered me a refurbished DMC-ZS3 in return, but the process takes about 3 weeks. I'm posting this video to see if anyone else has had this experience.
The visual quality of this camera's videos is outstanding. The still image quality is fairly good.

  4. We tried several other camera and found the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 to produce great pictures. It's small enough to fit in a jacket pocket or a small purse. The camera has several setting that allows you to take some control or just keep it on auto mode and it take great pictures.

  5. In brief: really easy to use, fabulous picture quality in almost every circumstance, well-constructed body, high-quality lens, better than average flash, great image stabilization even at the highest zoom, satisfyingly compact. I haven't used the video except by accident so I can't comment on that, and I don't use the included software so I can't comment on that either.

This is my first digital camera so I have nothing to compare it to other than what friends and family say about their own digital cameras. Judging from their comments, the DMC-ZS3 is easier to use, has more features and produces higher-quality images than anything they have in the same price range (it was a gift, but I think it cost about $275 at the time).

I have two physical complaints, but they're pretty minor. One is that the mode dial atop the camera is easily shifted, so sometimes it's in the wrong position when I pull the camera from my pocket. I've missed some shots from having to return to the mode I usually use, which is the Intelligent Auto. It doesn't happen all that often, though, so it's not a big deal--just momentarily irritating.

The second is that the battery runs out of juice fairly quickly if 1) I leave the camera on between shots, and 2) I review the shots I've taken. The freedom to take a lot of shots without racking up major film and processing costs is new to me, as is the opportunity to review a shot immediately, so I tend to do a lot of both. And I like to leave the camera on so I don't have to fire it up every time I see something I want to shoot. On average I'm getting about 200 shots between charges, which seems to be fairly low compared to what other reviewers are saying. I guess I'll either have to change my habits or get a couple of spare batteries.

That said, after using it for about three months I'm completely in love with the camera. It does everything I want it to do with almost no effort on my part. The Intelligent Auto mode is wonderful--it gets the settings I want probably 80% of the time--and the scene modes work well for most of the things I can't get right in the IA mode.

As an example, I took a shot in IA of some low-flying seagulls in front of a breaking wave, with a promontory in the frame about a half-mile away, and it was almost perfect: it caught the details of the wave perfectly, including the spray blown off by the wind; the gulls were not blurred in the slightest; the land was perfectly in focus. This was at about 6x. The shutter speed was perfect (1/800) and the aperture was really close to perfect; all I had to do was fiddle with the contrast and brightness a bit in my editing software and I had a stunning shot of a scene that I had only a couple of seconds to frame and capture. (It took me about 50 tries to get what I wanted but that's just because seagulls don't take direction very well.)

The zoom is fantastic, the 25mm wide angle is pretty much fun, the lens is great and after some experimentation, I can get the automatic settings to do just about anything I want. I can understand why really experienced photographers might want more flexibility with the manual settings, but for me, and I think probably for most people who aren't professionals or really dedicated and technically proficient amateurs, the available settings are way more than adequate.

Last but not least is the quality of the image stabilization. I don't have the steadiest hands but even zoomed all the way in, I can count on one hand the number of daylight pictures blurred because of camera shake. I've even taken shots that weren't blurred when I was actually moving the camera, which should be physically impossible. There's a limit to it, I've had some blurry low-light pictures because of the longer exposure, but it's otherwise really, really good.

I don't have a large format printer so I haven't seen what the photos look like when printed at the full 15x20 in-camera size, but I've been reducing them to 7.5x10 and increasing the resolution, and even on my mediocre printer they look great when printed on decent paper. No doubt a better printer and more expensive paper would do them more justice, but with what I have they're certainly suitable for framing.

So: If I haven't made it clear yet, I really, really like this camera and I recommend it to anyone who doesn't need the flexibility of full manual controls.

  1. I've owned the camera for 1 week now, and WOW! This camera is simply incredible and the picture quality is outstanding!!! The kit lens that came with it is also impressive when used in bright/outdoor environments. (Some of my test outdoors pics and indoor pics with my window blinds open have been stunning.) However, the kit lens is a bit too slow for handheld photography in dark locations unless you use the flash.

For those of you new to photography, a "slow lens" is basically one in which the aperture does not open wide enough to collect the adequate amount of light in darker locations. Therefore, the shutter stays open longer until enough light has been collected. This also means that if your hand shakes, pictures snapped in dark enough settings will come out blurry. This is not exclusive to the XSi as slow lenses on any camera will produce similar results. If blurry indoor pics are not what you desire, you can correct this by using the flash, using a tripod, or...

BUY A NEW LENS! The XSi can use ANY Canon EF/EF-S lens on the market...and this includes "faster" ones as well!! With faster lenses (ie, f/1.8), soon you'll be shooting like a pro indoors also!

In the end, when considering its wide range of features, customizable flexibility, and it's picture quality, I think any rookie or seasoned pro would be delighted with the XSi.

  2. Great camera for amateur photographers just starting out. I've always had a digital point-n-shoot for the longest time, but a new cannon point-n-shoot camera and a trip to Niagara Falls changed my mind. I was so impressed by cannon quality of camera and image. I became interested in doing semi-professional photography. So I looked into DSLR's.

This camera is a great camera. If you're just getting serious about photography like I am then I would highly recommend this camera. All the bad reviews I read here on Amazon made it seem like the camera had problems. But that's just not true, outside of defected product, the camera is good, it's the lenses you have to be careful about. The camera is comfortable to hold, not that heavy, and a heck of a lot better than the point-n-shoot you had before. It might take a while to get used to where all the setting buttons are, and moving between them quick enough. A lot of things are overwhelming with this camera when you never owned a DSLR or taken any photography classes. Such as where the buttons are, learning where all the features are, and the hardest is learning about aperture, shutter speed, and exposure. But don't let that deter you, if you take the time to learn then you'll be fine.

Price was great here on Amazon. It was the lowest price BY FAR that i saw while researching for NEW equipment.

For the lens it came with, the 18-55mm IS, it's a pretty good lens. When looking through all the reviews on here you'll see a lot of Auto Focusing problems. The thing is, if the lens can't auto focus, just switch to manual focus. You may ask though, "how often would I have to do that?". The answer, not very much. The only times my camera had auto focusing problems is with night shoots without a flash, and pointing it at the open sky. Sometimes you will get some shoots (depending on the scene and composure) that the camera wants to focus on something closer than your subject. Such as shooting through tall weeds or grass. Probably just want to switch to MF in that scenario like I do. I mean after all that's one of the primary reasons I got a DSLR, to have control of the focus. It's a good lens.

Overall, great camera, great price, great quality. I'm happy I bought it.

  3. I have had this for almost a year now and it is quite a bit of fun. i have added another zoom lens and a flash to my kit and will likely add a wide angle lens next. After that, the next step is upgrading the body. this is a very good camera for learning how to take pictures in the digital realm. I highly recommend taking a class or two on how to use the features of the camera as there are many, even on this entry level camera. I also recommend buying a flash as the flash on the camera is really not very powerful and can cause a lot of harsh shadows. Final note. Look long and hard at various software editing suites for the images you capture as they can really help create the mood and enhance the scene you want to impart in the image. Lastly, I say sit back and enjoy the ride.

  4. You dont have to spend any more than this to get a top knoch camera. It is very flexible with exposures and apertures and the memory card holds plenty. This camera has taken the best pictures I have every taken. It is user friendly also. What more can I say?

  5. The kit lens is a little bit slow, and while it produces decent pictures, the canon ef 50mm f/1.8 lens that I bought blows it away. If I had to do it all over again, I would've bought just the body and a couple 24mm f/2.8 and 50mm f/1.8. If you don't have a lot of extra money to spend on lenses though, the kit lens will produce good quality pictures. You may need a faster lens to shoot in low light. Overall, this is a great starter setup for someone looking to upgrade to a dslr package.

  1. I purchase this Nikon due to a friend of my daughter's(age 14), had it dropped at my daughter's bday party, and the girls responsible were able to chip in to replace....and though feeling their lumps about this.....Amazon affordable price made it workable, and positive teachable moment. The young girl who received the new camera loves it better than the original camera(Canon), due to more features and easability. So, thank you Amazon for being there in the moment!!!

  2. I bought this camera for a client and i tried it out first,it takes great pictures when the flash is on,if off its sort of blurry but the picture is really good when the flash works,i`d still recommend it and the price is not bad too..

  3. I am awful with digital cameras. For me, they always break or stop taking clear pictures. I recently purchased this Nikon to replace two Kodak cameras. The camera is easy to use and durable. The pictures came out clear. For the price you can not beat it.

  4. This is a great camera. It is inexpensive, it has great flexibility and easy to use fully packed features, it looks great and most of all takes GREAT sharp pictures. You hardly need the flash, even in low light and at night the image sensitivity is excellent and easily adjustable (just have a steady hand when you take the shot in low light because the shutter tends to stay open longer and that may cause some bluriness in the picture), again; you hardly need the flash (will save battery life). Video and audio quality are also excellent and battery life is adequate. The large screen is a plus as well. Only gripe is with the SD card being inside the battery compartment which it means that you need to open the fragile battery door everytime you want to take the SD card out. Quick tip 1: keep the resolution at 5 megapixels for a regular size 4x6 photo, you can't tell the difference in sharpness between 5 and 10 mpx and you'll have twice as much storage on your card. Quick tip 2: use the camera in auto mode(more reliable), not easy mode. I invite you to read the book. this camera has many useful features (automatic color compensation, rapid shots setting, light compensation, close-up feature and many more). Overall: EXCELLENT!

  5. la iba a devolver porque tiene un problema que no se puede borrar las imagenes por que se queda bloqueada, pero encontre otra forma de hacerlo y trabaja bien

  1. Had last year's model of same camera but was unfortunately lost. Chose to get same camera since the previous one was such a good product.

  2. This is our fourth Canon purchase. Like the rest, we have become very pleased with the product. There is some tendency to cheapen the housing etc from one to the next. I think the USB access cover is going to break any day now.
Quality is good. I really do not need the increased megapixels but this is the trend for the industry. The screen size is great. I like the new button to move from picture to picture.
I am happy with the purchase. Wish they had not changed battery size as we lose the flexibity to share batteries and chargers.

  3. This camera takes great pictures and is very easy to use. Battery life is great...just went to Egypt and was able to take 3 days worth of pictures before having to charge the battery...and the battery wasn't even dead at that point.

One thing I wish this camera had that other Cannon's have is the Vivid Color feature. I love the effect of making the whole picture black and white and just having one color stand out.

Otherwise, I have no complaints and I LOVE the green color!

  4. Canon PowerShot SD1200IS 10 MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD fits in the pocket and shoots great photos and video.

  5. I purchased this Cannon SD1200IS for my daughter to give to her friend and he loves it. Everything is great, even the size, which I was worried about because his hands are large.

  1. Bought this to replace another make that broke. First real use was at the Daytona 500. Great pictures.

  2. I just purchased this camera and have been toying around with it in the house and so far the picture quality has been great! The auto is a little to vivid for my liking, so I just change to custom and turn the color to natural. The zoom is great and easy to focus when you zoom fast. The real test will be when I attend concerts, how well the low lighting shots will turn out! Can't wait to test it out some more

  3. I have had the camera since December 2009. I own a Powershot 510 and enjoy using rechargeable AA batteries. I needed a bigger zoom to shoot birds down by the pond. I am happy with the zoom and the wide angle for interior shots. I use a tripod for the long shots but have had some success with full zoom hand-held shots.

But since I use MS Movie Maker I was disappointed to find out that Microsoft doesn't support the .mov movie file type so I had to buy other video software. I also have notice in 720p the camera drops frames. I bought a high speed SD card, 30meg/sec, and it didn't help.

I haven't contacted Canon yet, I hope there might be a firmware or something I can do since 720p was primary in my purchase requirements.

Overall the wide angle and zoom while shooting movies is good. I have owned Canons since my first AE-1 back in 1980.

Does anyone have any ideas on the drop frame?

  4. Worth the money for an excellent mid range camera. I was a little concerened with some of the other reviews about the camera but if you read the instructions you can take excellent photos. I only tried the video once and it worked very well on our 60 LCD tv.

  5. I like it. It's heavy, but managable. I am having trouble understanding the icons so I need that book I ordered to arrive soon. It's on it's way.

I've taken about 50 still shots and all were OK. Movies, nope, not so good, but I need to learn to use it properly. They were clear and colorful but I'm shaky. Can't do the tripod thing because I use a walker to get around.

I mostly take shots of wild birds in my yard, trees and at my feeders, then post them on message boards.

I think someone younger than I, with a quicker mind and steadier hands will love it.

The viewfinder was an absolute must for me. The articulating screen was a plus that I didn't expect. I love it!!

If I have any major complaints I'll come edit this.
    Annie
