  1. Great tool for carrying in a tiny purse ALL the time!

+ 2.5 years old and still works and looks like new
    + excellent battery life
+ compact - fits pockets and tiny purses
+ has a viewfinder - so when my LCD cracked (no apparent reason), I still could take photos!
    + great zoom for a point-and-shoot

    - no memory meter until u have 2 seconds left!
    - no manual shutter controller - but ok for a point-and-shoot
    - LCD cracked on its own 1.5 years after i got it - no pressure was applied and no temperature extremes either. Fixed it for about $90 on ebay.

Overall, with so many minuses -a for 2.5 - 3 years old, 5MP camera with cracked LCD - its not the hottest thing anymore. Yet I get compliments on it all the time (size especially), maybe cause I use it everyday and love it.

  2. My daughter purchased this camera about 3 years ago. She absolutely loves it, but unfortunately, she tripped and fell with it in her hand. The display no longer worked but the camera still took great pictures. She tried to buy another but they were so expensive and all the stores said it would be cheaper to buy something new than get that one fixed. I called Canon and they said they would fix it for $99 + $7 shipping. She was ecstatic, so we sent it off to them. Canon emailed when they received it, then they emailed the next day that it was being repaired at no cost, and then they emailed the next day with the tracking number for FedEx, and we received it the following day. Canon said they fixed it as a courtesy. They didn't only fix the display, but they updated the software, fixed the zoom, which she didn't even think about at the time to ask them to also look at, and they even polished it so it looked almost new. It now works as if it were new. They had no reason not to charge us because it has been long out of warranty. I am extremely impressed with Canon, and in fact, I am asking for a camera for Christmas for myself and have specifically requested a Canon in light of this.

  3. Everyone has it... for a reason. It is a great camera! Small and powerful!!

  4. I've owned this camera now for a few years. As a Computer Engineer and Computer Tech I am required to work a lot with digital cameras. I must say that this camera exceed all my expectations. Great quality, small, long battery life, great flash and many options. When I print the images at local stores (Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, etc.) the images are so sharp, some people think they are post cards.

Even though it's a bit outdated, I still recommend this camera. Don't let the megapixels fool you, it's all marketing techniques. Even though it is only 5MP, this is more than what most people need. I take most of my pictures at 1600x1200 which is not even using the full potential of the camera which goes up to 2592x1944, and still the images and printed photos come out spectacular. For those of you experiencing the "Memory Card Error", save your pictures first on the computer, you can use an SD adapter or if you have a memory card reader just plug it in. Once you have saved all of your pictures on the chip, perform a format of the chip on the camera, it is located after hitting the Menu button, point to Tools icon, then scroll down. The option to format is right under "Clock/Display". If you still continue to experience problems try a different brand of SD cards. I use Sandisk, RiData, and Kingston which work very well. Some of you have also been wondering about how to reset your camera to factory settings. Turn the camera on and press the Menu button for about 6 seconds. You will then be asked if you wish to reset to default settings, select yes. This solves a lot of out of focus problems or incorrect settings applied to the camera. If you have any problems with your camera just contact me, I'm willing to help.

  5. Now I have had it for 3 years, great pictures of outside spaces, not so good on the inside or dark areas. The best is that you can fit it everywhere, I always carry it with me (I used to forget my cameras and never take pics, does not happen with this one). Now there are better resolution cameras for the price that I paid, but Canon is the best for leisure use.

  1. I bought this camera before vacation last year because I wanted a great camera that I could take even greater pictures with. I used it all summer and it took absolutely beautiful pictures. It went from Chicago, to Florida, and then to New York, and it took high quality, beautiful pictures at every stop. From the Beach to the City, the pictures were amazing. It's a slim and easy to handle camera, and the large 3 inch preview screen is a major plus. It's the best $250 that I've spent in a long time! I have a feeling I'm going to take many more pictures with my Canon PowerShot. I would recommend it to everyone!

  2. Okay, I'm not even kidding you, this camera makes EVERYONE look hot in the photos! NO JOKE! I have found that no matter day or not, makeup or no makeup, good angle, bad angle - for some reason EVERYONE looks awesome when snapped by this baby!

I have no complaints, obviously I just don't like it for that reason alone, it's really an awesome camera - the full screen really helps with deciding whether to keep or x a photo. It's simple to use, really basic, but also has anything you would need to take a somewhat professional photo.

I have had mine for a year now, use it all the time and it's still in perfect condition!

A DEFINITE PURCHASE for anyone looking for a good lil cam!

  3. This is the second Canon PowerShot that I've used and it's my favorite by far. I love the large LCD display on the back and don't miss the viewfinder at all (seriously, who uses them anymore?). I've developed prints from this camera (usually 5x7s) and the quality is so stunning that I actually have to convince people that I took the pictures.

  4. We just got our camera and have been playing around with it.. I dont know if we aren't doing the right thing but when we zoom in it gets blurry! Can anyone help fix this? Its really bad with the zoom and being that we are new to it, it could be us.

  5. During a vacation, I broke my Cannon SD630. I never realized how much I loved the camera until it broke--It was my fault, I dropped it and the LCD cracked. So, instead of buying the same one I bought the newer SD750 and was really dissapointed. Not only did I miss the ease and simple-ness of the SD630, I was not able use the underwater housing unit that I bought to take pictures when I was snorkling...So, sometimes when you think that newer and more advanced is better, you end up going back to the one that you started off with. I am proud to say that I LOVE this SD630 and when it is time to buy a new one, I will be looking for the SD630!

I would recommend this in a heart beat!

5 comments about Canon Powershot S2 IS 5MP Digital Camera with 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom.
  1. I have purchased Powershot S2 IS in 2006, at first I was in love with it. It delivers great picture quality. In fact, I like it so much that I bought it another one for my Dad.

However, yesterday when I tried to use this camera, the screen is completely black, I thought I mis-pressed a button, so I tried everything. It seems that everything else is fine, you can still see your previous pictures, change menu options.

So I googled "black screen on Canon Powershot S2 IS" and found a big forum with about 1000 customers complaining the same problem. The S1 IS model had exactly same problem, and canon had recalled it. However, Canon does not admit the same problem existing for S2 model. And usually this problem happened after 1 year, which is after the warranty period. And the estimate for fixing the problem is about $120 plus shipping. Moreover, It appears that the same problem happened for S3 model as well.

I have not used this camera very often, and took a great care of this product. I bought this product mainly because Canon brand, I was very disappointed. So when you buy, please consider this problem.

  2. You know, until a month ago, I was a life long Canon fan. My little A60 and my S2 both served the purpose for there purchase very well. Now I have an A60 with only lines across the LCD. and a S2 with a black useless screen. The S2 had maybe 700 pics in a year and a half. Yes I'm a casual user, but have I have used Canon products for over 35 years. What a let down! I have two weddings this summer with lots of family attending. Now I must choose another camera and although the Canon S5 looks apealing, how could I possibly purchase another Canon product!! Any Suggestions?

  3. This camera was great until it stopped working 6 months ago. Mine gets the E18 error message and won't take pictures. Canon will fix it for $150 but the camera itself is only worth $200 new. Even though this is a common problem for canon they refuse to fix it for free. I will NEVER buy a canon again.

  4. After 16 months, my camera stopped working. The lens does not retract and I am getting the E18 error. Canon wants me to pay to repair because I am outside the 12 month warranty period. I am extremely disappointed.

  5. I think the S2 has a serious reliability issue
I purchased this camera the Canon S2 from Amazon on April 6, 2006 for $[...]. Upon my recommendation my son-in-law purchased his about 1 month later but from Costco.
We both were amazed at the performance of this camera. It was all that we expected and more.
About 14 months of use I started to have a strange "black screen" at start up. This problem would come and go and at times it would only happen at start up and the camera would perform perfectly for hours of shooting. About two months after my problem started my son -in law's camera also started to exhibit the "exact" same problem He had purchased his camera from Costco.
As time went on it became apparent that a serious flaw in this camera was starting to creep in and after researching this issue I decided to check with Canon. There service department said that they knew of no serious flaw in the S2 and offered to repair it for $127 since it was out of warranty by 8 months.
My son -in-laws cameras also started to go down hill and he also notified Canon and received the same response. Canon's attitude is that this "black screen" problem at start up is just one of those product failures that happen with all brands of cameras. I agreed that since there warranty is for one year that any product that fails after that would not be covered unless there "failure" rate on a particular model is was above industry levels but to have TWO cameras failing at almost the same time with the EXACT same problem is pretty coincidental. Plus research on the net indicates many of these S2's failing with almost the EXACT same issue "black screen" at start up.
Before any one buys the Canon S2 they better research the forums and decide if they want to chance buying this camera. I give it 5 stars for performance and 0 stars for reliability. I am sure that there are many S2's that do not have this problem but I also believe that there is an "abnormally high" fail rate for this camera.
I worked in Aerospace Quality Control for 12 years and it is my guess that the failure rate on this camera is way to high for the price and brand name (Canon). For those of you that have had the same problem tell Amazon & Canon what you feel and maybe down the road there will be a recall.

  1. This camera has great features and functionality, is a breeze to use in terms of learning it (as my wife can attest to... although it may take some time), and it's so simple to transfer files/print to a canon printer. I purchased this with the Pixma ip4200 printer, and it was well worth it!

The only downside I'd point out, which was a real bummer for my wife and I and is the reason I only gave 4 stars is that the flash is very slow to bounce back (so-to-speak). I recently got her a new 7.x MP Canon Powershot SD1000, which is similarly a snap-and-go camera, and the flash is a bit quicker at rejuvenating. However for the money, this drawback is truly minor, unless you're planning to really take tons of quick photos... and even then, I believe with these cameras you can set 3 shots at a time (although you should double check).

  2. I purchased this camera for my 8 year old daughter for Christmas after reviewing all the "kids" cameras. I own a digital SLR Canon that I am pleased with so wanted to stick with Canon. After checking around, I found an excellent price on Amazon. This camera is easy to use and takes excellent pictures. The color is great and I have found myself using it instead of my SLR. You can turn off the back display which saves batteries and take pictures through the eyepiece. Two AA batteries keep it running for a long time. The only complaint at all is that the battery compartment is a little awkward to open. My daughter has learned to use this camera quickly and has surprised us with the great pictures she's taken.

  3. This used to be mine a few years ago, but I gave it to my mom for Christmas after upgrading to something else. This is a great little camera. The best digital camera under 4MP if you ask me. It has a glass lens (most of these little cameras have plastic lenses) and it will focus at any length no matter how close or far your subject and no matter how close you hold the camera to the subject. Extremely easy to use. You should be able to find this on the used market in great shape for between $30-$75.

  4. I purchased this for my daughter for Christmas 2006. She has taken very good care of it and never loaned it to anyone. After about 6 months it started acting funny. I told her not to worry as I've been using cameras for over 30 years and have owned many digital's and it was probably just needed fresh batterys. UPDATE- she was right.... camera goes dead after 2 pictures either taken or viewed with new batterys. Camera now lives in the bottom of my safe...waiting for the Camera Gods to fix it. My $250.
should have been spent on something else..sorry.

  5. I've had this printer for about a year. The printer works great, prints well and fast. I can't speak to photo printing (ie, on photopaper) but colors are vivid and vibrant. My negative review comes because of the price of the ink, a full set of new ink cartriges costs more than the printer would cost new without the camera, $67 for ink from staples, $51 for ink from Amazon and $49.95 for the printer new from amazon. At this point, it would be cheaper to buy the new printer, just for the ink.

In addition, each ink cartridge has a special Canon chip in it, so after market ink is essentially out. You can buy cartridges, but you have to go through the process of cutting out the chip from the old cartridge and putting it in the new, kind of a jury-rig process. It's doable, but kind of annoying if you just want to buy and install a new after market cartridge.

I have no idea what would make a good alternative, but just for the ink price, I'd skip this printer.

The Camera is ok, but nothing special. This camera model, like several other Canon models, has a design problem with the zoom lens jamming (search "E18 error" on Google).

In summary, given a chance to redo it, I'd rather buy a different printer and a different camera, so there's very little point in investing in this package.

  1. This camera has worked like a dream since I purchased it a couple of years ago. The picture quality is unequaled in its class, and the battery life is quite long when using lithium batteries. In fact, I have been able to take many professional-looking photos and order enlargements up to 8x10 without any pixels appearing. At the current "used" prices, this camera is a steal.

It's hard to find anything negative to say about the Canon Powershot A520: I did crack the LCD screen, but was able to replace it myself by ordering a new screen directly from Canon. Compared to more recent cameras, this one is a little bulky--it won't fit in your jean pockets, but will fit easily into your coat pocket or purse.

  2. My wife and I were very happy with our Powershot A520 for the year and a half that we had it. However, the camera died with an E18 error during our friend's wedding, and it has not worked since. A quick web search for "Canon E18" or even "E18" will show you that this is a common error (with a number of different Canon models). We have never dropped it or abused it in any way, and it has spent most of its life in its protective case. While the camera seemed to be great before the moment it died, I would not buy this camera again. Do not get this camera if you don't want to have to replace it in 18 months like so many other users.

  3. After my Canon Powershot A520 stopped working, the first place I went to try and figure out how to fix it was online. Other than formal reviews from PC and photo magazines, it seemed to me that the most common other finding from extensive searches were customer reviews describing the exact same problem I was experiencing (camera refuses to 'power up' or stay on) with little or no explanations or ways to troubleshoot. Go ahead an do a google on it, you'll likely find more than a few customer complaints on it. My camera will not turn on anymore, and I gather that it is not worth it to try and fix it.

It should be noted that before I had this problem, I definitely did like this camera quite a bit. It wasn't the best in it's class, but, although it was a gift, it is more affordable than many options, and had more different kinds of options and gave the amateur photographer a lot of different options. Just consider that you'll probably only get a year or two out of this thing at most before it breaks down. That's not necessarily a bad trade-off if you take a lot of pictures.

  4. I've had this camera for a while now (2.5 years). It still works great! I got my money's worth and more. I have abused this camera so much and it is still fine . It is a good beater camera that i can take everywhere and i don't have to worry about (since i only bought it for $120 new at Target). I'll keep this camera till it's dead, get stolen ,or lost. Well worth it!

  5. I got this camera 2 years ago.
I did not like it from the beginning. It was cumbersome to use,
difficult to adjust the settings, and worst of all, the fact that it takes for ever to take the picture. The only way to make take the picture fast is if you have the continuous option, but then
you do not have any control as to which pictures you want.
The movie option is very poor.
To top it all up, the camera had a problem with the memory card reader and I had to send it back for repair exactly before a trip with my family.
Later models of the camera seem to be much better, but this is the worst of all.

  1. Its an ok camera to take to places where i dont want to risk bringing my PRO ones...althogh i already had some problems, it didnt work just after year i have it...cost me about 4150 to have it fixed

  2. You need to spend some time with the camera and the owner's manual before taking it on your next safari, but it has great flexibility and produces great shots.

I like the fact that the viewfinder is a small video screen so you can see exactly what is going to be in the picture as well as using it to review pictures.

Battery life was very acceptable using name brand rechargeable batteries that were slow charged.

  3. This is a great camera for a new camera user or one who is more advanced.
You can do so many things and get some great images. Love the ease of learning.

  4. Nice Pictures, Very amazing zoom, lots of functions and very hadfull screen. You can take professional pictures.

  5. I did weeks of research looking for a camera with a good zoom, a wide choice of aperture settings and good picture quality! I purchased this camera in April of 2007. It seemed to be working fine and I've taken hundreds of pictures with it. Now a year and 2 months later (2 months after the warranty expired) I went to go on a hike and tried to turn my camera on only to find that it was dead. We tried putting new batteries in with no avail. After returning home from my hike I started doing some research on the internet. I have found quite a few different posts that detail the very same problem as mine. One post mentions that a circuit board in the camera went out and it was almost $200 to fix it. I am a very disappointed customer at this point. I figured a camera that cost $ 350 would last longer than a little over a year. Canon has not issued a recall and hence will not repair it for free. I'm thinking I might need to look elsewhere for my next camera.

  1. I originally got this camera for a trip to Italy and Greece. And it took AMAZING pictures while I was there. A lot of reviews complain about the quality of pictures or the graininess, but a lot of that can be solved just through browsing the manual and stepping out of the "auto" option.

All was well for a about a year, until my automatic lens cover began malfunctioning. Now, every single time I go to take a picture, I have to remember to flick the half open lens cover with my finger. The camera already has a slow start-up, so this is just the icing on the cake. Figures that the problem comes up after the warranty period is over.

  2. First of all, I am a reporter for a weekly newspaper. This camera travels with me wherever I go. I take both newsy outdoor photos and indoor photos at social functions. It's the latter that this camera really stinks. It is programmed to wait six seconds between flash photos, which, when you are taking photos of the mayor shaking hands with another dignitary, is an eternity. I end up taking an early safety shot then completely missing the real moment. Grrrr! It also is horribly grainy indoors, often to the point of being unuseable.

But the camera isn't without some merits. Outdoors in good sunlight this little camera is fine. In fact, I've taken many good shots with it. The built-in movie mode is also very handy. Both the video and the sound are surprisingly good.

The A530 may be OK for light home use, but it is not for the professional. I'm still impressed with Canon, however, and I'm looking at getting a higher level Canon point-and-shoot digital.

  3. Alright. For being my first camera, I liked it at first. The main reason was because it would tell you in understandable english what setting you had it on. Another thing I liked is that when you are looking at the pics, the camera detects what way you are holding the camera, and displays the picture so it's right side up whichever way you are holding it.

Now, what is making me sell the camera and buy a different one is that well, the 5 pixels makes the pictures come out poor. And don't even try to take a scenery picture with this thing. But the main reason is that I have gone through 4 sets of batteries in one day. I wasn't even taking that many pictures, and was turning it off in between. What I think is ridiculous is that it doesn't even come with a charger, which was a very poor choice for Canon to make. One more downfall is that the display screen is a little small, it doesn't bother me that much, but I know for some people it would be a big deal.

Right now I am looking at the HP digita cameras, and they are all looking promising!

  4. I love this camera. It has enough features for a camera hobbyist and is simple enough for an amateur. The manual provided with the camera is very detailed and easy to understand. One of the things I don't like about it is the shutter lag time (especially bad when batteries are low). I like to take pictures of my niece and the camera isn't fast enough sometimes to capture some special moments. The only other thing I would change would be for the zoom to be 6x, but still a great camera. I bought it on Black Friday so the price was much better too:). I would definitely buy this camera again. I have some great pictures because of it.

  5. I like this camera, all things considered. I am only a casual photographer, so the fact that it makes it easy to take good pictures is excellent for me. I think that the menus are well thought-out and a lot of fun to play around with. My only complaint is that my camera eats batteries; I usually get to use the camera on one event per set of charged batteries. It's really annoying because it doesn't show battery status until they're almost dead. Other than that, great camera.

  1. I purchased this for my daughter..........She loves it. No function problems, just keep clicking. Had it about a year now and would highly recommend.

  2. I love this camera!!! This was recommended to me by my neighbor who is a professional photographer. It takes great pics and short movies and has wonderful features including, but not limited to, a pet and kids mode. This means that it snaps the picture right away and it is not blurred. If you want a great camera at a great price this is it!

  3. Best money ever spent on a camera. Durable, small, handy. Good pics but not fast enough to pick up movement in the dark.

  4. This camera is excellent. It is easy to use, easy to carry, and well made. Stick it in your pocket and never miss a shot. Get a big memory card to make it even more enjoyable.

  5. The wife and I took this along to Germany on vacation in Sep 2006, and for a back-up to our 30D it was great. Quick into action and very non-intrusive, it goes with me just about everywhere. I often keep it in my laptop accessory bag.

If used for what it was intended (point and shoot) it is a great camera. Sharp focus, good colors, and nicely adjustable ISO and flash settings. Battery life is excellent. I go for months between charging. Higher flash usage would probably cut this back though.

The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars was the wimpy flash. You can get one of those $20 slave flashes to fill in or bounce if you like. Vary happy with it and glad we got it. Hope it lasts for a while.

  1. Great when it came out and still good, but now there is a version with IS!!! for about twenty more. Well worth it to get the newer version with IS.

  2. This is the best little camera! The pictures are great and I was really suprised at what cute little videos this thing can take.(I have had it for almost a year)

I would caution about developing the pictures as I found a significant difference in quality between local and online. I use snapfish and they have the best printing. The local drugstores...are terrible. I sent the same photos to four different places including Sony, Snapfish, CVS and Rite Aid. Sony was okay. CVS and Rite Aid were terrible and Snapfish was the best.

  3. This is a great camera.... I love love love it. But dropped it only once...and that's all she wrote. Seriously.

  4. OWNED 1 BEFORE. COULDN'T FIND IT FOR MY VACATION. SO I WANTED 1 JUST LIKE IT AND FOUND IT ON AMAZON.COM .
IT'S A GREAT CAMERA, TAKES GREAT PICTURES. MY FAMILY WAS AMAZED AT THE CLARITY. AND HAVING AN HP PORTABLE PRINTER BOTH COMBINED WAS THE DIFFERENCE IN MAKING GOOD PIXS.
I HAVE RECOMMEND THIS A550 TO ALL MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
    I'M VERY HAPPY WITH IT.

  5. I have always owned Canon cameras. I own 4 cameras from the A series.
A520, A530, A540 and A550 and I am happy with all these cameras and here are the reasons why.

    1. Value for Money, I bought all these under $200.
    2. 4x Optical zoom is a plus and sufficient for a point and shoot camera.
    3. Delivers fairly good quality pictures. I have printed poster size pictures and have been very happy with the results.
    4. All these have better manual controls than most of the ELP series point and shoots canon has made.

    Cons:
one thing to keep in mind is that these cameras are point and shoot and the lower end models that canon has made, so anyone buying these should not have high expectations with these cameras.

    1. Delay between two shots when flash used. Again this is marginal and I really do not think of this as a major -ve point, at least not for the money spent on these.
    2. The ELPHs have made them look bulkier :) again not a biggie. The ELPHs are really compact. So even though these are not as big, they look big in front of elphs.

I would not recommend A550 to anyone only because they are old models, not because they are not good. Instead I would recommend the latest A series models that Canon has come out with. A720 IS, A570IS, A590IS. These are all great cameras with Image Stabilization built into them.

  1. What a neat little camera. I bought it only a month ago, so far so good. I turned it on and began taking pictures immediately. I hate reading instructions and this camera was very user friendly and very compact. I got it for my wife for Valentines day and she adores the color too. I guess the only negative thing I would have to say so far is that the memory card it came with was very small 16mb. I can not take videos for long or save many pics. But, that is a feature you can upgrade. I saw a 4GB on sale at Office Depot for $49.99. I am definetly going to upgrade it so I could take long videos and save hundreds of pics while on vacation. One other thing I notice is that when looking at an image through the LCD sceen, it looks fuzzy. But the picture comes out fine. Maybe I just don't know how to use all the features yet.Oh and finally, it should come with a carring case. Just my opinion.

I really like it, good buy........

  2. I owned the SD10 for 4 years. It takes nice pictures (notably not THE best) and is easy to use, but the best feature was always the size. It's so compact - perfect for a guy like me that wants to shove his camera into a pocket. It was smaller than even my cell phone. So, when it was time to upgrade, the SD40 was the natural choice. I love the new features and updates that the SD40 offers. I was, however, surprised to see the Twilight Sepia version, as when it arrived, the metal trim was gold, not silver like the picture looks or like the other color choices for this model have. I can live with it, but it was not what I was expecting.

  3. Super camera for taking along on trips and parties and my kids won't steal it.

  4. I bought this camera for my teen daughter. She loves it and finds it very easy to use.

  5. i love this camera, it is light weight and perfect size. Pictures are clear, and i love the color accent option. i would highly recommend this item and the matching case. perfect combo.
