  1. My sister in law got this camera first. The first time she asked me to take a picture of her, I knew I had to have one too. It's very easy to use and the picture quality is amazing. It has many different functions, including a 2 and 10 second timer, and the ability to automatically take three pics in a row (on a timer). It's also compatible with sdhc cards. There's only two cons as far as I can tell. One, before you take the picture and you're looking at the lcd screen, it's a little fuzzy. But it always shows a clear picture afterwards. And two, the flash takes a while to recharge, like 5-10 seconds. Other than that, it's simply a great camera. I didn't get mine from Amazon though. I got it from Walmart because it was a little cheaper there.

  2. My new Canon Power Shot A480 is a beauty, I love it. It is not a complicated camera, its performance is amazing and the pictures have beautiful color. I am very pleased with my new camera.

  3. Reason for the review is to document the failure of the lens mechanism. Have owned this for less than 12 months. Three months ago, noticed that the mechanism developed a grating sound. It still works but sometimes I have to manually assist the lens open and close. Ridiculous. I treated this camera, like I do my other electronics, well. It goes into a case when it's not being used. I was disappointed since I trust the Canon brand.

  4. This is a great little camera when you want the ease of point and shoot. It has most of the features of cameras costing much more and the Amazon price is the best I found.

  5. I am very pleased with my new camera. So easy to use and great snapshots even when little ones are on the move I get a sharp picture.

  1. I borrowed this camera from a friend for my trip to Hawaii. It was easy to operate, and took great underwater pictures even when I forgot to turn on the underwater mode.

I think that it's weight is irrelevant, as with a strap it floats in water.

I liked it's shape, it was easy to hold.

It's battery lasted more than three hours of continuous picture taking without flash. Flash did deplete it fairly fast.

It survived several 2-3 feet drops.

It survived a 20 feet free dive in the water, which is impressive.

What amazed me about this camera is Canon's image stabilization. Even with waves' bobbing action and fishes moving rather quickly, most images managed to come out crisp and colorful. It also managed to focus on the moving fish, rather than the background most of the time. I also noticed that I got better pictures by getting very close to the object rather than zooming, because of inherent limitations of underwater photography.

I never experienced any leakage, but then every time I opened any of the seals I did it after rinsing the camera in fresh water, wiping it dry, and putting it in front of a fan for an hour to dry.

I'll have to buy it for myself.

  2. picture quality was pretty good but leaked after second use, the disposable cameras take nearly as good picture quality and I have never had one leak. Hopefully cannon will take care of it under warranty.

  3. seemed to have trouble focusing in lower lighting areas with this camera. but other than that, the camera loads of fun!

The camera was built for rougher environments and does an exceptional job!!!

Took it snowboarding and caving (muddy cave) - using the AKT-DC1 Accessory kits shoulder strap. Which I'd definitely recommend!

I'd recommend this camera for any outdoor enthusiast!!!!

  4. March 15th 2009:

I am going to start out with my initial thoughts then will add my comments as time goes by. I just got the D10 today, I had it shipped to my work so that I could get it earlier in the day! I had all ready purchased an Maximal Power DB CAN NB-6L Replacement Battery and a car charger so I would have a fully charged battery to play with. Turns out that the Canon battery has some charge all ready on it so I didn't need the other battery right away.

Taking it out of the package I was very impressed with how well put together it is and how solid it feels. I have had many of the Canon Powershot cameras starting with the S210 way back in 2003. This is the 4th camera in the Powershot series that I have owned. From my initial take this is really a good camera. Due to the waterproofing it feels very solid and seems to be well made. Since the camera is more rounded they were able to place buttons in areas that are easier to reach such as the zoom and zoom out buttons are now on the screen side of the camera and are easier to manipulate then on my SD750. It also seems that they beefed up the brightness of the screen due to the fact that this camera is meant to be used outdoors more then most cameras. I was only able to take a few test shots so I can comment too much on the most important feature of the camera but from the few random test shots in bright sunlight it seemed to do very well.

    March 16th 2009:

Well we got the camera to the pool to put it through it's paces. The pool has large indoor kids play area with water slides and stuff to play on. We got a fair amount of light in from the windows so we could take some shots without the flash if we were on that side of the pool. Before going in the water I opened both doors and visualy inspected the seals for any foreign substances that might make the seal not work properly. I plan to do this everytime we use it in the water to be 100% sure that we don't have any leakage issues. I would venture a guess that most people that have had their camera leak ended up with a small hair or other foreign material on the seal. I was really happy at how well the flash worked on the D10. I do have a SD450 that I bought a waterprrof enclosure for but I could never get the flash to work like it should. Since this camera is not that bulky the flash worked very well.

I was also impressed with the scene modes. I had a few issues with non flash indoor shots until I switched it to the indoor scene mode, at that point my pictures looked much better without the flash. Controls are easy to use, I like where the zoom keys are it is just taking me a while to get oriented to which button does the zooming. My wife was a litte bit skeptical that we needed another camera but she is a big believer now that we have it.

  5. This camera leaked the second time I used it. This first time, I took it snorkeling and it worked perfectly. The second time out we were tubing in a river and it leaked in no more than three feet of water. I followed all the directions in the instruction manual to the letter and it stilled leaked. Now we have no pictures from the trip of a life time. Cannot recommend this camera to anyone.

  1. We got this camera for my daughter for Christmas after my fater-in-law raveda about his SD1000. I cannot figure out how this camera has so many great reviews?! Are their expectations THIS low? We have a 9 year old inexpensive point and shoot that takes better photos! If everything is perfectly still and there is excellent lighting, this camera will take a decent photo. But I'd guess 90% (or more.. it's rare for us to get one that's not) of our photos of people are blurry. And the flash is worthless. It WAY overexposes pale skin tones. I'll upload some of our average photos with this camera later. I expected much better picutre qualit for one hundred seventy dollars. Our camera phones take better pictures. For what it's worth, we don't use auto mode as per other reviews, but that doesn't seem to make a difference. We did go to the store to look at this camera before we purchased and it handles well and pictures seem good looking at the lcd. But when you get them off the camera, they suck. I really enjoy photography and thought maybe my daughter could join me, but it's fairly pointless with this camera. :( I won't ever buy another canon camera and will encourage anyone thinking about it to borrow this one before they decide if canon is the brand for them.

  2. We purchased the Canon SD1200 IS camera and Canon WP-DC20 underwater housing for it to use for a dive vacation in Bonaire. The housing was very easy to use, and very light and easy to carry (there is no need for any weight system). We did not have a strobe, and had no problems with light issues. Very sharp photos and realistic colors. Both seahorses 1 foot away, and squidd 10 feet away, came out sharp. Just put it in Manual "Underwater" mode (select DISP to find this hidden selection) and drop it in the housing.

I gave the SD1200 camera a 4 star as the size is almost too small and hard to handle outside of the underwater housing, and annoying whirring noise whenever in Auto Mode used on land. Will use my older Canon SD800IS for non-underwater use (I love that camera). I would consider purchasing a different camera/housing combination with a larger display if I did it again, but definitely happy with Canon and the WP-DC20 underwater housing.

  3. This is a nice camera. We are still testing it and so far, it has presented very good quality. It's a bit heavy for a small camera, but I guess that means that it is built well. The screen is pretty fast when turned on/off. The devices are very easy to understand, however,it is always important to read the manual to better use the camera's settings. A lot of times the reason why we don't get the results we expect is because we don't know how to use the camera properly.

  4. I have a Canon Powershot S2IS. the camera is less than 2 yrs old. While taking a picture it shut itself down and the lens stayed open and an E18 error came on the screen. After some reseach and googled 40,000 complaints for this design flaw. I now have a $500 paperweight. Canon will fix it for $150 plus parts or offer to let you purchase a refurbished camera starting at $199. A class action suit was filed against Canon. I will never buy another Canon product. Im very unhappy.

  5. I just got this to go to Costa Rica and take pictures. My previous camera took horrible pictures, and had bad picture quality. I had just got back from a trip from Germany and did not have that many great pictures, and wanted a better one. This camera has great picture quality, is small and easy to carry around. The settings are easy to use and there are no mysteries where and how the camera is used.

  1. Well, it finally happened: the dreaded lens error on my SD1100is. I was about ready to automatically add the SD1200is to my Amazon cart until I hesitated for a second and decided to make a trip to Best Buy to play around with some of the other new cameras. I had read reviews on the SD780 and was really eager to see it in person. On the shelf, it automatically caught my eye with its sleek, black styling, and I was wondering if maybe it would be an even better companion than my trusty SD1100is was.

Truth of the matter is that 12.1 megapixels isn't going to be much more apparent than 10.0 MP (what the SD1200is has,) but to be honest, I just flat-out fell in love with the styling of the SD780. As someone who factors in a product's design and aesthetics almost as much as its functioning, this was a clear-cut and easy decision, but the SD780is isn't just about looks -- it delivers astonishing pictures as well! I'm not a person who likes to fuss around with settings and menus (like on DSLR cameras,) but I still want nice pictures! The simplicity of this camera is even more impressive than SD1100is, and the pictures are even sharper and more vibrant thanks to the DiG!C 4 image processor. The "Smart AUTO" feature really is just "Point and Shoot" too! Where there were certain settings to mess around with on my SD1100is

This camera makes perfect sense, really. It's easy to carry with you, very easy to use, so the chances of capturing that "picture perfect moment" have increased considerably over other cameras. The only thing that I am disappointed with seeing is "Made in China" on the bottom of the camera's casing. I have always valued Canon products because the company has always made it a point to manufacture in state-of-the-art facilities. I don't know how much a factor this is because a lot of people seem to have SD780s that were made in Japan, but be aware that at least some are made in China.

  2. Comparing to my DSLRs - no comparison.
Comparing to my Casio Exlime, same IQ, but better video.

    Pro:
    - Extremely cute, well build, look&feel, better than all others I've tried, Nikon Coolpix, Casio Exlime, Sony.
    - Great usability for a pocket P'nS cam - very responsible shutter, ultra fast FA, IS seems to be effective.
    - Good video quality with AF.
    - Intuitive user interface. No need for manual really.

    Con:
    - Lousy picture quality. Very lousy indeed. This point alone defeats all the pros it has for my purpose. I just need something to be constantly in my pocket in case my DSLR is not available or connenient. I remember the older Digital Elph to be bigger and more expensive but with much better IQ indoor or outside. This new Elph is a lot cheaper but the IQ is just like any other cheap cam from any other brand - a huge disappointment for my purpose. Like another reviewer said - 12MB pixel is just a marketing hoax that makes the file unnecessarily big. The IQ really isn't much better than my Canon video cam shooting still at 3MB. Ok, maybe a little better :) But not by much.

Bottom line - A great pocket cam with very disappointing IQ. For my purpose, it's useless, which really is unfortunate. Because otherwise I really love this little cam.

  3. this camera is tiny and the display on the lcd is grainy. the picture quality is that just about any canon point and shoot. my girlfriend likes it cuz its flashy and she can show it off. and again its tiny. i would much rather have an slr, but for people who just want to take a bunch of pictures to show your vacation off, or to snap a couple quick shots of some weirdo walking by just for fun, this camera is pretty nice.

  4. This is one outstanding camera in every way you can imagine. But then, I have come to expect nothing less from the good folks at Cannon.
Despite what some of the more negative reviews say. The pictures from this camera are magnificent! (and I have seen Pixs from other brands of point and shoots that are certanly less then satisfying.)
This is the first camera I've had with face recognition. So I was impressed when it would detect human faces on the images on the TV screen.
It's size is great! And (as the saying goes) I even like the color!!!
I whole heartedly recommend this camera!!! To anyone! At any price!

  5. If you are looking for a snapshot camera that you can slip into your shirt pocket, this is a great one. But it won't compete with your digital SLR, if you have one. You can take it anywhere and the battery life is quite sufficient for those shots you want to take to remember an occasion. I had forgotten the annoyance with the time delay between snapping the shutter and actually taking the picture. But that is a minor inconvenience compared with the ability to take a camera anywhere you go.

Definitely not for serious photographs, but you will love the convenience.

  1. After only three months the lens would no longer open. I followed instructions from others on the internet who experienced the same problem. I could not get it open. The camera was like new. I only used it a few times. Never dropped it. Yes, the pictures were good but...a "throw away camera" after only three months!! Too expensive for that! The cost of sending it back for repair exceeded the value of the camera. Check this problem out online BEFORE you spend your money. I will not buy another Canon camera. They're junk!

  2. The picture quality is really very poor. The video recorded is pathetic. Was embarassed to have got it.

  3. I have had 4 Canon camera's... they have all been a good buy.
My wife had a Sony small camera... and didn't like it...
was hard to use .... I talked her into this camera...
    and she loves it.. Simple,clean,small
    Just the camera she needs.

  4. I have had prior Canon products and have always been impressed with their intrinsic value, whether copiers or cameras. This camera does not dissapoint. It's easy to use, has great picture quality and is priced right. This particular one was purchased for my sister-in-law who saw how happy we were with our previous purchase. She is very happy with this camera.

  5. We got this to take on vacation and were not disappointed. It takes great pictures and videos. With an 8gb card it takes almost endless videos and pictures. Downloading to my pc is a snap.

  1. I have had this for almost a year now and it is quite a bit of fun. i have added another zoom lens and a flash to my kit and will likely add a wide angle lens next. After that, the next step is upgrading the body. this is a very good camera for learning how to take pictures in the digital realm. I highly recommend taking a class or two on how to use the features of the camera as there are many, even on this entry level camera. I also recommend buying a flash as the flash on the camera is really not very powerful and can cause a lot of harsh shadows. Final note. Look long and hard at various software editing suites for the images you capture as they can really help create the mood and enhance the scene you want to impart in the image. Lastly, I say sit back and enjoy the ride.

  2. You dont have to spend any more than this to get a top knoch camera. It is very flexible with exposures and apertures and the memory card holds plenty. This camera has taken the best pictures I have every taken. It is user friendly also. What more can I say?

  3. The kit lens is a little bit slow, and while it produces decent pictures, the canon ef 50mm f/1.8 lens that I bought blows it away. If I had to do it all over again, I would've bought just the body and a couple 24mm f/2.8 and 50mm f/1.8. If you don't have a lot of extra money to spend on lenses though, the kit lens will produce good quality pictures. You may need a faster lens to shoot in low light. Overall, this is a great starter setup for someone looking to upgrade to a dslr package.

  4. The XSi is my first DSLR camera. I have, for many years, been shooting with point-and-shoot (also called "compact") cameras, so I have a lot of experience with point-and-shoot cameras. But the images quality of the XSi simply blew me away! The images captured on the XSi is much, much, much sharper than the ones from a point-and-shoot camera!

If you're looking at the XSi, you're probably a budding photographer like myself. The XSi is, debatably, the best entry-level DSLR camera, next to the Canon EOS Rebel T1i/500D.

    Highlights
    ----------
    - 18mm - 55mm "Kit" Lens Included
The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS SLR Lens alone sells for [...]. You have everything you need to get started right away with taking great-looking pictures!

    - Phenomenal Images
Alas, I'm unable to show you the images I've captured with the XSi here. But there's alway sample images uploaded by customers of the pictures on the product page. Alternatively, you can go to the Canon site and see for yourself the official sample images.

    - Auto Mode
Okay, so you're not quite prepared to tinker with the bells and whistles on the XSi. No matter, there's always a fully "auto" mode (green rectangle on the selection dial) you can fall back on. In this mode, you would be using the XSi just as you would a point-and-shoot camera. The auto mode will stifle your creativity, but it will help you take great pictures nonetheless.

    - Incredible Battery Life
I must have taken hundreds of pictures of pictures and the battery indicator bar still shows a full battery capacity (that's with image preview disabled- which is, if I'm not mistaken, the default/factory setting).

In sum, the XSi does every your point-and-shoot does, only BETTER.

If, like lot of people, you are in a quandary deciding between the T1i and the Xsi/450D. Here are the major improvements of the T1i, at least on paper, over the XSi :

    - 15.1 MP Resolution
    - Full HD video at 20 Frames Per Second
    - ISO range of 100 to 3200
    - 920,000 dots VGA monitor

    vs. the XSi:

    - 12.2 MP Resolution
    - No video capability
    - ISO range of 100 to 1600
    - 230,000 dots VGA monitor

    * XTi vs XSi *

    - Resolution: 15.1 MP vs. 12.2 MP
When it comes to megapixels (MP), I would have to subscribe to the mantra that megapixels isn't everything. Since the XTi has the same sensor size as the XSi (APS-C size: 22.2 x 14.8mm), a higher number of megapixels would mean more pixels packed into same sensor area.

Keep in mind that as a general rule, the higher number of megapixels that are packed into a given sensor area, the worse the more "noise" (or graniness) in low light conditions. (I want to be fair, however, and say that I have not noticed perceptible differences in image quality between the two cameras, even in moderately lit or low light conditions.)

    - HD Video
The T1i frame rate is 20 frames per second (fps) compared to even the low-end camcorders, most of which are capable of 30 fps in Full HD. The XSi has no video mode.

    - ISO: 3200 vs. 1600
Like they say, there's no free lunch. A higher ISO *will* result in more noise in a captured image. As a rule of thumb, set your ISO to the lowest practicable ISO setting. The lower upper range for the XSi isn't, in my opinion, a big restriction.

    - LCD Resolution: 920,000 vs 230,000 dots
There is absolutely no refuting that the LCD on the T1i *is* better than the one on the XSi. The images displayed on the T1i is unquestionably sharper than the images on the XSi.

Based on the above factors, you will have to be the one who ultimately decides what works better for you.

There are, of course, other considerations, the most glaringly obviously of which is - you guessed it - the price. The price of the XSi is has dropped like a rock since I purchased it a couple of months back. If you're on a tight budget, the XSi is definitely the way to go.

    ---
The image quality from the XSi is simply phenomenal. It is very affordably priced (it has gotten much cheaper than what it sold for originally when it debuted in 2008). If you're on a budget, the XSi is, in my opinion, the best DSLR camera to get.

  5. Since I was a child I always had a camera and loved taking pictures. My first camera was a Kodak 35mm rectangle job. You know the one with the square one time use flash on top? I then had Vivitars and Ritchshot In May of 2000 I bought the Canon Rebel EOS for trips to China and Australia. I never fully got proper use of the camera because film does not show the errors of your settings. I then went on to buy several Nikon Cool Pix and a Canon Powershot S2. In December of 2009 my wife and I bought each other as a gift to ourselves this camera. Words do not describe the feeling of "arriving" as an artisitc photographer. Ous lives will never be the same.

I must say I am biast against Nikon SLR's because my friends have them, and with the graduation to lenses and accessories I will be Canon 4 life.

The functions of this camera are amazing. Eveything I struggled with for years in film, and inept point and shoot and powershot cameras came to an abrupt end by purchasing this one. The functions people struggle with, tones, lighting, sharpness are answered in a matter of a few test shots going through normal photography education (a quick reference guide in the owners manaual gives a brief overview that you can learn what you need to know). The book was a guide that in the 1st week and several hundred shots later were answered by photographs that made friends and family think they were fake or not done by this camera. I will be posting photos here on 3/19/10 of what I am trying to convey. The use of the picture style defines the photos that you take. Monochrome, Sepia, landscape with the right filters brings out the inner photographer you never knew you had. You will never, ever go back to the automatic settings after two weeks of using P, TV, AV, M, and A-Dep setting. The 12.1 Megapixles is great for framing the highest quality photos in 11x14 frames. I do not belive in the near future our walls we be able to hold our photos, we will have to keep switching them out.

The only warning I have for buyers of this camera, or any SLR is that these are the cameras that take you to a new comfortable level and that comes with a price!!! you start off with the 18-55mm lense. That is not good enough. You must then get filters to bring out the landscapes and protraits you are taking. Then you move on to buying the 70-200mm or 70-300mm lenses, because you need the advance lenses to take action photos, or landscape photos. Then you need a wide angle lense, because taking pictures in the mountains or indoors, or of landscapes you get tired of backing up and not getting what you want in the shot. Then comes the hood for the wide angle, and the UV filter, and it goes on and on. Think of the camera as a foundation to advanced photography, however the lenses, the flash, and the filters, which will run you $700-$2000 it is what defines the pictures themselves. This camera is an awesome tool to capture your view of the world, the events in your life, and convey them in a professional manner. The price is fair and it will be a camera for years and years of professional photography.
