- i think this is a good camcorder. great ease of use and all the bells and whistles.
buy it now!
- I haven't used very many camcorders yet, so I don't think I can fairly compare the ES420V against the competition. I can tell you that while I was impressed with all the features of the camcorder, I found it hard to hold and confusing to use ONLY at first. The video quality was impressive though, especially considering the relatively low expenditure. Compared to the Canon Elura2, I'd choose the Elura2 -- it's a bit easier to use and includes impressive stills. If you're in the market for a camcorder under [price], the ES420Vis ideal!

5 comments about Samsung SCM105 MPEG4 Sports Camcorder w/10x Optical Zoom.
- Nice little camera, but Samsung Marketing people tended to obmitt a few of the shortcomings of it. First it hypes the external camera, but leaves out the fact that you cannot take advantage of zoom when you're using it or that you cannot take pictures with it. Resolution and lighting on the external leaves a lot to be desired and it's activation cannot be done from the camera (The record button is on the cable link). Also the fact that the camera DOSEN'T have Mega pixel performace when taking still pictures isn't made apparent untill you read the fine print. Battery life with the one that comes with the unit is really next to useless. The only reasion that I didn't send it back was it's size and portability.
- I have tried several digital camcorders in order find the best way to go direct to DVD without tape. The Samsung Miniket SCM105S is by far not the best.
Still pics are limited to 1.2 Megapixel resolution. (Xacti's are 3.2, 4, and 5)
The available formats do not let you record the highest quality MPEGs (capable) to the external Memory Stick Pro. So, you can only get close to DVD quality for about 10 minutes on the internal memory (around 495MB). As well, the external memory is limited in size to 1GB. (Not so with the Sanyo Xacti which will take MPEG4 on up to 4GB SD Cards for about 2 hours and 20 minutes of near DVD quality video.)
Further, the buttons are way too small. You have to have childlike fingers and great dexterity to coordinate your movie making experience. The normal hand-hold position blocks the flash port... a major design flaw. (Xacti buttons are handy and intuitive in layout. The flash is properly positioned.)
Last but not least, the video format of the AVI's is an oddball version that Windows MediaPlayer doesn't like. A software work-around is provided that is like going behind your back to scratch your elbow.
You MAY use the Samsung for an MP3 player. But, it's a lot smarter to have a cheaper separate MP3 player that will withstand a bit of abuse than to have it embodied in a camcorder that costs at least $400. Convenient perhaps, but dumb.
A good feature is the 10X optical zoom combined with the anti-shake. This does make for good video on the limited internal memeory. (Xactis of the 4 & 5 Megapixel resolution have the anti-shake technology with 5.8X optical zoom.)
Nuff said.
- This is my first camcorder and I have to say this is very easy to use. It has many features and its convenient to save on memory stick and be able to switch from internal to external memory while recording and vice versa. Unlike the other posts I WAS able to use a 2G external memory which gives it a lot more shooting time.
It's nice to have MP3 capability but you don't want to waste the battery and cut into shooting time by listening to mp3s. Also, you HAVE TO use the bundles software for editing, you cannot use programs like VirtualDub. The given software is not the best, however it does suffice for basic tasks such as cutting and joining and there are actually many advanced features you can use as well.
Overall I'm happy with the intuitive layout of the functions on the CAM, compact size, and the fact that it saves on memory stick since I have a Sony computer and the stick goes directly into the memory slot. Software could definitely be improved to make it easier to use however.
- This camera sucks, I am a big fan of Samsung products, but this camera is a flat out waste of money. I bought this and returned it a day later. It is NOT Mac compatible as it states and the quality is pathetic. This could so easly break in your pocket. I bought Sanyo Xacti C40 and think that is ten times better, almost no comparison. The samsung takes decent pics and video, but is cheaply constructed. So if your lookin into buy this opt for the Sanyo or Fisher, won't regret it.
- I've had this camera for a year or so. I purchased an extra battery because the battery does not last very long. Like almost everyone else, the quality of the images is not as good as I thought and this camera really isn't worth the money. You can get just as good quality from a $120.00 camera. I wish I had known this sooner and I wouldn't have spent so much.

5 comments about Canon Elura 85 MiniDV Camcorder w/18x Optical Zoom.
- I bought this camcorder recently and I am satisfied with its performace. The only reason I am taking off a few ** (stars) from this product is due to the reason that you cannot transfer videos from MiniDV to your computer using USB port. It required IEEE 1394 firewire cable (Cannon does not supply this cable with the camcorder) and a computer which has compatible port (not common in many computers and so you end up buying a suitable card for your computer if you wish to transfer the videos).
- This camcorder has been reviewed by several experts and has received very good recommendations. See for yourself at www.dvspot.com or www.camcorderinfo.com.
As for the reviewer that complained about the firewire...ALL digital camcorders use firewire for video transfer to a computer since USB only has a transefer rate of 1,1 Mb/s vs Firewire which has a rate of 400Mb/s. 4 minutes of finished video takes up 4 Gb!!
Nobody would want to transfer video using USB 1. NOBODY, not Sony, JVC, Panasonic, or Canon ships their camcorder with a firewire cable ($14,99 Amazon.com). Please get your facts right before you give a great camcorder 3 stars.
- I like the features this camcorder has (although I have to confess I didn't buy mine on Amazon). I don't give it full stars because the picture quality just seems average instead of bright and sharp. The analog to digital conversion feature is getting hard to find in camcorders, and lets you run VHS tapes from your VCR through the camcorder and into a PC (or onto the camcorder's digital tape), and that's a major plus with this machine.
- This is only the second camcorder I have owned. I've had it for about 2 months. So far, it has exceeded my expecations. I haven't gotten into the details of what you can do with it. But, the picture and the sound on the camcorder have been great. I would definitely recommend it.
- I have not used this camcorder very much at all in the past two years I've had it. I've maybe recorded about 10 tapes with it and watched a few back on playback. Today I was getting it ready to film the birth of our second child and all of a sudden a message came up telling me to "Remove Cassette Immediately". I pushed the eject button and the cassette is totally stuck and will not move. I called Canon and they told me it would be around $150 to fix. I researched other blogs and electronics trouble shooting websites and read several comments from others with this exact same problem. VERY DISAPPOINTED!

- This DVD camcorder was a good price compare to others brand and I make my decision nad bought one,but since you pur a DVD into it is problem.First it dont reconginzed teh DVD say no dic , on and on, when finally acept the disc it will format, if you are lucky . But you are not finished when you are recording it say disk writing error and you have to restart the DVD.
I tought first was the type of disk , but I have use 3 brands and all the DVD recording types and it is the same problem. I call SAMSUNG na dthey tolled me to download some Firmaware after I downloaded even that could not be recognized by the Camcorder.

4 comments about Canon Elura 90 MiniDV Camcorder w/20x Optical Zoom.
- In researching digital camcorders I prefer to rely on the experts. Apparently there's a guy on this site who has it out for Canon for some reason, and has blasted this camcorder in particular. But... read all of his "other" reviews, and you'll see that he blasts the ENTIRE Canon line, as if he's actually bought each camera and found fault with each of them. Clearly impossible, and clearly a person with an agenda. Ignore him. For an honest review of the Canon Elura Digital Cameras, specifically the Elura 90, read the write-up on CNET.com... perhaps the best site for technical reviews and pricing information. Not only did they point me in the direction of a GREAT digital video camera, the CNET.com site also saved me over $200.00 from the big box retail prices! This camcorder does it all, and then some! True, you will need to be able to read in order to study the manual and unlock it's capabilities, and you will need to be able to independently manuever your fingers to operate it, and it's helpful if you can walk and talk at the same time... but if you can do all of those things... you can work this camcorder... and enjoy it! One recommendation though... don't buy a digital camcorder if you have no intention of truly utilizing its capabilities... or if you have no desire to network/connect it to your PC and either save and/or create your own movies/DVDs. THAT is the true innovation behind the technology. Using MicroSoft MovieMaker 2.1 I have been able to make incredible home movies... soundtrack... narration... effects... the works. With my old analog camcorder I could... save them and watch them as recorded... nothing more. But... if you DO want to enter the digital age... and you want the best camcorder possible at the best possible price... the Canon Elura 90 can't be beat! PLUS... it is one of the ONLY high quality camcorders that allows you to CONVERT your old analog tapes into a digital format... and it can also function as a WEBCAM! As I said, this one does it all![...]
- This is one great camcorder I have. Its very simple to operate and best part is, I can do recording at night as It comes with built in flash. I haven't used all its features but surely like its design. Its small and cute but it's desplay is big enough. Very pleased with this purchase.
- This was my first comcorder purchase, and after thorough research using Consumer Reports as well as much satisfaction with my Canon 510 digital camera, I decided on this one.
Widescreen recording, even though it's not High-Definition, is essential as all future TV purchases for myself as well as most of my family and friends will be larger screen. Recording in the 16:9 mode prevents the picture from having to be stretched on such TVs to fill the entire screen.
Very easy to use. Microphone range is sufficient. Remote works well. Still pictures from the camera are good enough for websites, emails, and small prints. Switching from tape to memory card mode is easy.
The power switch is easily turned on, and does at times when storing your camcorder in a bag with other items. However, the camcorder shuts off automatically after a few minutes of unuse, so I have never noticed battery drain from such occurences.
Acquired free video software from an existing rebate program by Cannon & Pinnacle--shockingly, the installation CD took less than 2 weeks to be delivered. Note: you will need a 4-6 or 4-4 PIN firewire cable to transfer video to your computer (Make sure you order one from Amazon, or else face spending at least $20 more at Office Depot, CompUSA, etc.)
Have only had it a few months, so I cannot attest its durability. However, I am very pleased with its performance so far. (Note: I purchased this via one of Amazon.com's web merchants, J&R Music and Computer World, and was extremely satisfied with their speed.)
- This is my first camcorder, and I have done a lot of research on which camcorder to buy. I bought it in August,2005, and used in extensively when I went to Rome and Barcelona. It was easy to use, and the video inside the cathedral came out clear even though it was very dark inside. I even saw details from the ceiling which I did not see when I was looking at it with my naked eye. I like the ability to take photos , only at times I forgot to switched between tape and card. I was in a panic when I was trying to chnage tape because I could not make the tape pop out, but after some practice I got it right. The videos were very steady, I am sure of it because after sometimes my arms gets tired and started shaking while taking videos or photos, but amazingly when I was watching the vidoe and reviewing the photo they all came out clear, and have no evidence that my arms were shaking. My only prolem is to figure out how to get a good video or photo with the sunlight facing the camera. This was a good buy.
