5 comments about Canon ZR600 MiniDV Camcorder with 25x Optical Zoom.
- Warning, this camcorder may not work with windows XP. I got this camcorder back in in November of 2006, I hooked it up to my PC, useing the firewire, my PC keeps saying it could not find any camcorder with 4 different programs that I tried. I got looking in the disk that came with it, and the disk is only for windows 2000, windows ME or a MAC. so I called Canon and they said they could not send me any other solution disk, there was nothing I could download for XP,they where of no help and with the disk, the programs keep poping up "OS?". other then that it takes great video, bad pictures, just don't hook it up to an old TV, you well get a really bad picture, you need a new TV or VCR that works with digital. the other bad thing is, if your camcorder breaks, and you have not found a way to download your tapes, then you have no way of watching them. so If yours work on XP your lucky.
- This camera will satisfy most folks that read Amazon reviews! DV-ing can be an uphill climb for newbies, but with the proper expectations, you can be happy with your purchase and your future use.
I have used this camera for 4 months, and here are my observations:
A few assumptions:
1. Firewire BABY! With almost ALL DV camcorders you will need a 1394 Firewire port on your computer, and a cable (about 10-20 dollars online)
Workaround: none, this is DV! USB is too slow. The SR600 has two ports...make sure you use the port labeled DV. If you want to shell out $200-300 more, go with DVDcamcorder.
2. For Transfer or Editing, Look in your Windows! If you have Windows XP, use the FREE Windows Movie Maker program which copies your movie footage from camera to PC, and allows a little editing. Vista has even more you can do, like copy to a DVD!
3. Don't expect long shoot times... My battery that the camera came with lasts only about 35 minutes, even when I'm not using the LCD screen.
Workaround: buy a $15 dollar 1700mWh battery(larger) on EBAY to have as your main battery, and use the stock one as a backup.
4. Don't get left in the Dark. Reviews state that the camera shoots poorly in poorly lit rooms. This is common with DV cameras.
Workaround: Move camera into P mode, from EASY on the switch near the zoom, and choose NIGHT as option on the LCD (using easy to use Joystick) when you are shooting in lowlight scenes.
AS long as you know the 4 assumptions, this camera is perfect for newbies in DV, right on the money with price, and with good features, like 16:9 WS, Toggle button, and excellent OPTICAL zoom. Wish my sony digital camera had this zoom. IF they had a better battery and included the Firewire cable, I'd give it 5 stars.
I would buy it again, but would opt for the ZR500 for price, or the ZR700 if I wanted to use it to bridge the copying from my VCR to the computer for moviemaker.
OS: Windows XP sp2
PC: 4 yr old DELL Dimension, with Creative lab card with Firewire
Software:
Windows Movie Maker to pull clips from camera, and to Edit movies
DVDFlick (opensource and free) to copy my edited movies to DVD for playing on my home DVD player or computer (moviemaker only copies the .WMV file on a CD or DVD)
Panasonic AY-DVM63PQ Professional DV tapes
- This was a gift for my daughter and she loves it.
Service and quick shipping are super.
- Nice product but not available as new models have replaced it. New isn't always better!
- Nice camcorder, a little hard to use. dont understand all the instructions. Probably my fault for not being able to read well. there is a lot to remember without looking at the instruction book. The book might be better organized. I like the camcorder.

5 comments about RCA EZDVD1 Memory Maker & EZ201 Small Wonder 60 Minute Camcorder Bundle (White).
- I totally agree with the postings by R. Oatman (Lewistown, IL) and M.L. Burnham on this item. I've also tried ordering the RCA EZDVD2BD bundled item several times through Amazon, but each time, there is NO Camcorder in the box. Amazon promptly provides semi-automated email responses, but I've been unable to get any type of explanation as to how this error is repeatedly happening and how to resolve it to get the full product as advertised. I'm concerned about trying to order it again from Amazon. Amazon's telephone support is pretty helpful and better than email, but no one there seems to have any answers on the misadvertising or mispackaging of this bundled product. Too bad, it sounded like a nice product and purchase to me initially, but now I have doubts about what was advertised.
- This item was advertised as being able to copy to a DVD from another source as well as the Camera i.e. Camcorder, VCR etc. I have tried every AV cable connection possible and am unable to get the machine to record a DVD from another source. I'm not satisfied.
- Save your Money and burn your movies to DVD by using your computer. It's alot easier. We already have the Small WOnder Camcorder which we love so we only ordered the docking station. The docking station was unable to read the camera. This might be EZ for a rocket scientist but not your average user. We returned ours! Great idea if it actually worked!!!!!!
- I was unhappy when my son opened the much awaited package and the camcorder and a few other things were missing. I e-mailed the seller who originally said they would send the missing items---except for the camcorder!!! I decided to return the items, insured, costing me an additional $20.00 for shipping. I received an e-mail from the company satying that because the shipping material was missing, they were charging me a 25% restocking fee!!! I ended up paying more for the item than it was worth. VERY UNHAPPY!!!
- I must say that this is not the most solid device I have ever purchased, and the load and finalizing time is a bit long. But for the price and size this is a great dvd recorder. I do not understand the other reviews on this product not working. I pulled the device out of the box, plugged the wires into my TV and into my camera and boom, I was recording DVDs. I can only assume they had there wires crossed. the interface is straight forward and the record quality is good. If you have space restraints, like me, this is a good option. If you have the space for a larger unit then I would go that route.

5 comments about Sony DCR-HC1000 3-CCD MiniDV Digital Handycam Camcorder w/12x Optical Zoom.
- I had this camcorder for about a year and think this may be the best small 3-ccd in its class.
Pros: true to life picture; fine low-light shooting, manual functions; optical stabalization; advanced audio features; comfortable grip
Cons: most controls on LCD; jumpy flashcard recording (limited to no more than 15fps)
- This is the greatest little camcorder in the world with lots of bells and whistles that would have been way more expensive a while ago. I do wish that it had actual fstops rather than a slider on the touch screen for more accurate adjustments, ditto shutter speed and the manual focus is a bit fussy. More easily accessible manual controls would make it close to perfect. the touch screen takes a little getting used to and is not the very best idea. Other than that image quality is terrific under all sorts of different conditions, a camera mounted mike has decent sound and it is really a pleasure to use.
- It is an excellent camera, probably the BEST on market for the price you pay, excellent video quality, and good pictures too.
But need to improve 3 points:
1- You Cannot wath it on a PAL System TV, Thats important to me because have to travel a lot to Europe, but cannot show what i have recorded to my family there. All my olds cameras have that option.
2- The Microfone is not as good as the cameras with the Mic on Front. This camera havi it on top, ¿why? i don't know
3- Most of the funtions are on the touch panel, i want the white balance out, and maybe some others funtions.
- this appears larger than the PC-1000, and its not clear to me what you get for that extra size other than a little extra zoom and the swivel mount. anyone know the difference? thanks.
- Must say : this camcorder does it job as a pro-camera ! Althought the controll on its LCD, it is heplful when you have to creat some lively scence.

5 comments about Canon DC10 1.3 MP DVD Camcorder w/10x Optical Zoom.
- I bought this for my sister as a wedding present. The camera has a lot of good features. But when they used a set of DVDs on it, they found that only 1/2 of the discs they used would record correctly. not sure if the problem is with the disks or formatting.
More importantly, this camcorder does not allow for the video to be transferred to Apple Mac's. It only allows images taken with the camera to be transferred. This is a big disappointment and we will have to sell this camera on Ebay now or something.
Usually i'm a big fan of Canon camcorders and camera's. I'm on my 2nd Canon camcorder now and just bought a digital camera. But Canon should have made this camera with support for Mac's. its ridiculous.
- This is my 4th camcorder, and it is also the best one I have had so fare. It's the easiest to use hands down, the smallest, takes great video, I think just as good as my DV tapes camcorder but easier to copy.
All in all this camcorder does what I have all ways wanted a camcorder to do and to be.
It's true the software is not that great but it will get you though. If you want to do editing you will want some other software. I use Magix Video Pro with great results. Just put the dvd into your computers dvd player/writer (once the dvd is finalized) and drag and drop to Magix and it does the rest, and you can edit as you desire. Much better then running though hours of DV tape with a fire wire. warning, not all editing programs will work with mpeg format so check first.
A 30 minute tape took about 10 minutes to copy over to the hard drive and for Magix to read, plus mpeg, dvd, is a much more manageable format then AVI, dv tape, with is huge and a computer resource hog. Editing isn't quite as clean with mpeg but AVI has many more problem then mpeg such as size.
Or if you just want to make a copy of the dvd then use a dvd copy program like 1 Click DVD Copy and you'll have an exact copy in just a few minutes. Use rewritable dvd in the camcorder and you have a winning combo. Again much better and easier then paying back DV tape with a fire wire or burning to a set top dvd recorder. Two thing I never have to do again.
Now for a global perspective, I have always loved movies and home movies. I was fascinated with the idea of movie making on my computer but my hopes where dashed with DV tape and AVI files. Plain and simple I just gave up, it was to much trouble, but my interest and enjoyment have been reclaimed with this dvd camcorder.
Ok, ok now the bad news, things I don't care for to be balanced, tape length could be longer 20, 30 and 60 minute setting is all you get with a dvd. Yes longer record means lower quality. I've been using 30 minute setting with great footage quality. And all in all 30 minutes really isn't that bad. 1 or 2 hours can get to be to much on a tape or dvd of our kids playing in the yard.
Second the batters take 2.5 or more hours to charge. That's a long time. But they do last a while. You'll fill up a disk with a full charge no problem. My advice, You will wont at least 2 batteries.
Third, 10 zoom seems a bit small but it is workable and not a deal killer in my opinion. What I would really like to see is a nice wide angle for in doors. I'm using a wide angle attachment, 0.5X, with a 27mm adapter ring. Makes a big difference but is like adding a half sized Dixie cup to the front of the camera. It's not pretty but it works.
So yes, narrow wide angle but not any worst then my Sony TR65 from 1990 which come with an on board wide angle diopter that made the same difference as the wide angle lens attachment or my Canon ZR60 from 2003 which was what I original bought the attachment for.
That's about it. All in all a great easy to use camera that is the camcorder I've been waiting for except the wide angle.
- there are two things i do not like. #1 it does not shoot in the dark very well. But i have read there are settings i can adjust. # 2 it wasnt free.
Everything else is great
- My title says it all. I've lost footage several times, corrupt discs all the time. The worst part is, it makes you think you're recording, and then you go to play it back, and it's not there. This is a certified piece of junk. Mine may just be a lemon based on other reviewers, but why take the risk when it comes to recording fun memories?
- This camera really met and exceeded my expectations. It does crystal clear work which is very benificial to our ministry.

5 comments about Sony DCRTRV340 Digital8 Camcorder w/ 2.5" LCD USB Streaming, & Memory Stick capability.
- This is a great video camera for the price.
After getting a chance to play around with my parent's camera, I fell in love with the TRV340. This is my first digital video camera and I'm very happy with it. It produces great video and sound, though you can't compare it with a mega-pixel or 3CCD camera. The camera uses Sony's digital 8 format which lets the camera read older 8mm tapes. Digital quality on Digital 8 tapes is equal to that of MiniDV. So, if you've got a collection of those tapes, this is a great way to convert them into digital video. The camera is a little larger than the MiniDV cameras, but the added weight makes it less shaky in your hand. Because of the included Firewire (IEEE 1394) port, it's a breeze to transfer video to your computer, provided it also has a Firewire port. I use a Mac so I can't comment on the quality of the included windows editing software. The battery that comes with the camera won't last very long and I highly recommend an additional battery, though they are a bit pricey. I also recommend a good, sturdy tripod, and a screw-on UV filter. This filter costs very little and will protect the lens from scratches and smudges. Another good accessory would be a boom microphone that attaches to the intelligent shoe. Sound is often overlooked on camcorders and most of them have terrible onboard mics. While this camera has the ability to take digital stills and save them to a memory stick, the resolution is very low and the pictures don't look very good. They're somewhat disappointing. I highly recommend this camera to anyone looking to get into digital video or anyone with a collection of 8mm tapes that they want to preserve.
- After reading many specs and reviews for both MiniDV and Digital 8 cameras I settled on the 340. I have not been disappointed. This camera is feature rich and gives excellent quality video. As with any video camera the still picture quality is poor. If you want quality still pictures, the best way is to get a proper digital still camera. The menu system is very easy to use but some parts of the owners manual are not really very clear and skimps a bit on detail so there are one or two features I still haven't worked out. The built in microphone sensitivity is excellent and I have not noticed any real problem with drive motor noise pick up by the mike. The ergonomics of a couple of the controls could be improved. I have an average size hand and find my thumb needs to be almost double jointed to operate the on/off mode switch, especially to switch it on, if I want to use the camera with one hand only. The zoom control could also be improved. I think a two finger forward, aft operated zoom control would have been easier to use. These things I am willing to tolerate because of the excellent value for money this camera provides and I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting features and quality for a reasonable price.
- Thist is the best camera ive ever purchased and arguably the best Digital8 Camera ever. The TRV-340 has all the features u need. And it beats a MiniDV because it has a Super Night Shot Mode and 700 Zoom wich works great, 25 Optical Zoom too! Believe me u will not be dissapointed if u buy this camcorder!
- I had the DCR-TRV340 since May 2003 and it has proven to be a versatile and nearly trouble-free video camera, as it has been used for nearly every week at various events since. The 340's method of digitally encoding 8mm tapes (Digital8) have made it inexpensive (at the time) to buy tapes compared to the MiniDV format and that a standard, basic 8mm tape can be used, contrary to the manufacturer's recommendation of Hi8 tapes. Video quality from the image sensor is acceptable, though it could be better (and is on the 740/840 models). The digital still capture feature is more of a novelty (with its 640x480 max resolution), though can be convenient in certain cases. The 340 also makes a good video deck, as it can record video from other sources. It can also pass the external video source via Firewire to your computer, and webcam function through USB, eliminating a dedicated capture card; these features are almost nonexistent in today's lower/mid-line video cameras. Only issue was a loose board connection within my 340 which caused some of the transport functions to do one function - record; which was temporarily resolved with a smack to the camera body (until I had the time to disassemble it).
- I like the DCR-TRV340 very much. This is a well built camcorder with a super lens that makes making great video's possible. I have done several video's of auto races and if you type ( Center Street Auto Racing ) in your browser you will see the many Strictly and Super Street races that I video taped using my DCR-TRV340 camcorder. I use my Firewire (IEEE 1394) cable to put my video clip files on my computer. I have also used my DCR-TRV340 to video tape Horse Shows and do book promotions. If you are using the Yahoo.com search engine and type in ( Paso Fino Horses on the Sounding Board ) you will see a very nice video I did that was also done with my Sony DCR-TRV340 Camcorder.
My Sony DCR-TRV340 Camcorder has been very good to me and I recommend it very highly. One drawback the Sony DCR-TRV340 Camcorder has is that the memory stick can only do a video of up to one minute and you can put that file on your computer using the AV cable but if you do a video over a minute long you will need to use a Firewire (IEEE 1394) cable to put that video onto your computer so if you want to put your video's on your computer and the video's are over a minute long and you want to put the video's on a memory stick you will need a camcorder that allows you to put longer video's on your camcorder memory stick like a a DCR-TRV350, a DCR-TRV33,or a DCR-TRV460 does as well as some other Sony Camcorders.

- This was my first digital camera and the quality of the pictures were OK. But everything else about it was a surprise... The batteries burn out extremely fast, just after taking 9 or 10 pictures or playing a song for 3 minutes. The video playback was choppy on the LCD screen and wouldn't even play on my PC. The audio was really hard to hear out of headphones, and so on... In my opinion, this camera is OK just for taking occasional pictures of stuff, but it's a really cheap camcorder and MP3 player. This product was completely unsatifactory to me, so I had to return it. I wouldn't buy it if I were you...
- I would suggest buying a video camera that holds more memory because this one only allowed us to tape about 15 minutes worth of video and then it was full. The pictures were also dark. I would suggest shelling out more money to get a better product cause this just wasn't worth it.
- Feels cheap, parts don't fit together, won't start with memory card in camera. The screen is smaller than the picture would have you believe - the screen doesn't fit when flipped down - the memory card door doesn't stay put - the over all feel is of really cheap plastic. Batteries last all of 20 minutes..
not worth a dime.
- So, I had to replace my 17 year old Panasonic palmcorder. I knew I wasn't going to be continuing with a camera that utilizes a c size cassette. And, seeing as how christmas just came, I didn't want to spend a lot of money, or make a permanent decision on what kind of format to go with. I made my decision after reading many reviews on some of the cheaper models. At $59.50, how could I go wrong. From reading reviews, i knew I was buying a camera that wouldn't be great indoors. But, outdoors, the video it shoots is really quite good. And, even though I wasn't buying it for still shots, I was very impressed with the two shots i took of my daughter. The camera is tiny, and almost feels like a toy. The doors to the memory compartment, and where you hook up the wires are very flimsy, but, so far, so good. It does eat up batteries big time, but, if I decide to use this for a while, I'm going to get rechargeable ones. I've read some reviews on this model where people were complaining that it doesn't have enough memory. I bought a one gig memory stick for under 20 bucks. At under a hundred bucks you can't go wrong with this camera. Just don't have high expectations of using it indoors. Although, I did use it recently in an indoor situation with a lot of natural light coming in, and it came out much better than i expected. Combined with the price I got it for, I give it an excellent rating, but be very gentle with compartment doors. I am amending this review to 'good' on March 11th 2007 because one of the compartment doors is now in two pieces. And all I did was remove it the only way you can. And it just came off in two pieces. It does still go back on. It's the cover for the spots where the different input wires would plug in. I should also mention that the software with this camera does some pretty good things. I was able to edit out a short clip from a video and email it to a neighbor, and you can also make a jpeg from a video still shot. The zoom on this camera is digital, which I have now learned, is pretty useless. I've now learned the hard way that you need an optical zoom to be able to have any clarity as you zoom in. But, at under 60 bucks, it's still a fun toy. I even have mp3 clips loaded in and it does work well as an mp3 player. You can fill a memory card with music, and have a cheap ipod. But, who knows how long this thing will last?? It's a good way to learn the world of digital recording. And I didn't even get to the voice recorder...it works well.
- it really sucks them dry quickly. if you're going to buy a cheap camera and have to spend 3 or four bucks every time you want to use it for more than 5 minutes, well, not so cheap! The A/V quality is so-so, but that's not such a big deal, it actually makes for an interesting "artsy" effect. But really, I need to find one that has better battery life, or invest in some rechargeables!

5 comments about Sony DCR-SR40 30GB Hard Disk Drive Handycam with 20x Optical Zoom.
- I've had no problems editing content transferred from the camcorder to my PC. I don't use the software that comes with the camcorder, I use professional editing software and I have heard it is best to buy seperate editing software when purchasing any hard drive camcorder.
The video image quality is terrific. I've edited my scenes and put together splendid DVDs, the transitions between scenes were smooth and impressive. MPEG2 isn't as compressed as MPEG4 (Divx), however it's still a good standard. Anyone who doesn't get good results needs to upgrade their PC - there is nothing less than perfect about this camcorder.
The optical zoom is good, although I wish it was 30x or 40x optical zoom. The digital zoom feature is limiting, but that is to be expected and is the case with any camcorder.
The controls are easy to use, you can perform the basic functions, zoom, record start/stop without using the touchscreen. Advanced functions are configuration options are in the touchscreen which is easy to navigate.
The camera is light and petite, and transports nicely. It fits in one hand well - when recording you can use your other hand to stabilize the shot.
- We had one of those big bulky ugly Sony camcorders, but for Xmas, I told my husband I wanted a camcorder small enough to fit into my pocket book since I have two kids and I wanted to record all the cutesy things they do and say (one is 3 and the other is 8 months).
I was happy with the size of it, the weight, the quality and the ease of use. I too think that the docking station is a bit of a hassle, but overall, I love the convenience of throwing it into my pocket book without it weighing it down and causing too much strain on my shoulder. It's easy and handy whenever I need it and I can pretty much leave it anywhere around the house for quick use instead of lugging the other big one around the house or wherever I go.
- I bought this product shortly after my daughter's birth to capture her precious moments. It is lightweight, and easy to use. The handycam has some cool features and the online user guide is certainly user-friendly. I was able to easily burn a dvd and even create a dvd menu.
The camera feature is useless. The photos come out terrible, and also very blurry, especially if the object is moving.
The quality of the picture is very good during the day, but at night the backlight feature does look a bit artificial.
Overall, a good camera for the price.
- This was a gift from my husband to record and photograph our trip to Disney. I am horrified at the video and especially the picture quality. I cannot believe this thing is on the market. Shame on Sony.
- This camera has proven to be very convenient in size and features for the period of time it has worked. Feb 2007 - July 2008 with very little problems. I purchased it with no extended warranty, an extra battery and a good case for it. I have always taken care good of it , keeping the cover on and in the case when not in use. I also made sure to disconnect from computer through software before USB removal. I have used an average of maybe 90 minutes every two months since the purchase date. Im presuming most people would expect to use the same. All the features on the camera and convenience of size, HDD, extra zoom, 'okay' night mode, wide screen, etc. etc. is what may justify the price. Considering the extreme care and maintenance I provided, this camera is obviously not a quality made product from an electrical point of view. The power no longer turns on. Not with AC.. not with either battery... not even with the 30minutes of technical support tips. Sony says the warranty is expired and repair will cost $211.00. For an $800 camera at the time- brand new from a respectable seller, you would expect a better warranty. I should have asked, oh well. It seems I am not the only one having this problem. I guess I'll send it in for repair. The only problem is I needed the camera for the next two weeks more than the last year that Ive had it. The camera is great if you put convenience over picture quality. MAKE SURE YOU BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY-- consider yourself warned.
