5 comments about Sony CCDTRV308 Hi8 Camcorder with 2.5"LCD and Video Light.
  1. Price and function are two of the main reasons I now own this camcorder. I have webtv so I can capture all of the stills I need and do it quite easily and without software and a computer.Keep it simple stan is definitly my mantra and this camcorder helps me do just that. More functions and options would just go to waste and be confusing. It is light and ergonomic and I got a free tripod and camera bag with mine at circuit city. I wouldn't buy electronics on line again (been there done that). A longer battery life would be all I would ask for .

  2. If you want nothing more than a really good camcorder to take basic videos, the Sony CCDTRV308 is the way to go.

It's probably the best Sony Hi8 camcamcorder you'll get without all the bells and whistles that let you download video on to your PC.

It has a few great features like NIGHTSHOT (which allows video in virutal darkness) and STEADYSHOT. Also, the 20X zoom works really well. (Don't be impressd by the 460X digital zoom-- on any camcorder; the image becomes more blurry the closer you zoom in with it.)

You'll probably have to get another battery, as the one the Sony CCDTRV308 comes with will only last for about an hour or so when using all the functions (LCD screen, stop and start REC). I recommend buying the NP-QM71; it lasts between 4 and 6 hours.

BUT (A VERY BIG BUT), If you want to anything more than basic VCR editing, get at least a MiniDV, especially if you're willing to spend between $500 and $1000. I was willing to drop $500 for a MiniDV because I wanted to easily edit my videos, but I wasn't willing to spend another $500 to upgrade my PC to accomodate the large amounts of data.

Otherwise, the Sony CCDTRV308 is a great Hi8 camcorder for basic video recording and little or no editing.

  3. We purchased this camcorder for the holidays, selecting the CCDTRV308 over the CCDTRV108 due to it's added features such as image stability and auto-light. It arrived within three days - amazing! With my son's birthday coming up at the weekend, and the speedy delivery, it was a real test as to whether I could read the manual and become comfortable in the camcorder's use before the big day. The instructions are clear, concise and easily referenced.

We chose official Sony cassettes for this first run to ensure optimal picture quality and compatibility. Image quality is excellent, but we did notice that it performs better after it has 'warmed up'. This might be due to cassette stability or electronics temperature, but in no way detracts from this product's quality. Fade in/out options are excellent and with the 'cinema' setting gives your production that 'ER' feel.

I suspect that upgrading to a higher capacity battery may be a next step, but it lasted through the kid's party with ease. About 30 minutes of shooting remained, even though we used the LCD the whole time.

Title use is a little confusing, but you do get the option of creating two custom titles in addition to the standard fare.

The tripod was prepared, just in case the weight of the camcorder became tiring, but it was not needed. The lightness of these new camcorders over the ones of yesteryear makes life much easier, and is not burdening.

We researched considerably, before purchasing this product, which is no guarantee of success, but I have no hesitation in recommending it to those considering a Hi-8 camcorder.

  4. I've been trying to buy a video camera for the past 6 years (ever since my first monster bought in 1990 died). I finally bit the bullet since this camera seemed so reasonable and so highly-rated. I'm happy with every aspect of this camcorder. The bells and whistles are surprisingly complete, and it's so lightweight that I can (and do) spend the entire day with it in my hand.

One caveat...a wide angle lens would be a smart purchase. It's difficult to get far enough away from the action and still hear what is going on.

  5. I just got the CCD-TRV-308 camcorder and it is awesome!! The only thing is is that you cant edit your film on your computer you can just play it back. I give 4 - 4 1/2 stars

  1. I am very disappointed with this camera. The image stabilizer does not work. I exchanged the first camera I bought for a second and was presented with the same problem. I tried the second camera for a while thinking I was at fault. Nope. The IS does not work. However, I am very pleased with the way I was treated by Amazon. I will now first look to them for any purchase.

  2. I have no complaints. It is challenging to figure out a good software to use to put it on your computer. I have a DVD recorder and just transfer it directly from the camera to a DVD. Great camera though! I'd recommend it for a simple little video camera!

  3. One year and one month after purchase, in other words one month after the warranty expired, the tape door stuck open. I've used it maybe 4-5 times and stored it gently and safely in its padded case out of harm's way. Then last week I pulled it out, ejected the tape, put in a new one, and clack...the door won't close and take in the tape. I did some searching on the net and found many, many people having this same problem with Sony devices. It's a shame because other than it catastrophically failing 30 days after the warranty expired, I really liked it. What's happened to Sony? Sad.

  4. My video camera was working great but yesterday it started acting up and was not replaying video in a normal mode. The video was choppy and the sound came out in blips here and there, it is in a permanent state of slow fast-forward or so it seems.

I have had this video camera for about 15 months and have been very happy with its easy and user-friendly approach. I look to Sony for quality, however I have been less than satisfied with their accoutability. I do not believe in extended warranties. I think they are a crock and if a product or company has to be backed up by an extended warranty they are not worth buying or supporting, or you had better just resolve to purchasing a "throw away" product.

Having said that I have just recieved the news that my video camera is in need of sony service repair. My warranty is 75 days out of date, but even so when I was told that it was an internal malfunction with the camera I do not feel that I should be the "test-dummy" for Sony's longevity of the purchased product. I can buy a new one for $250.00 on Amazon or have it repaired for half that price, but then only recieve a 90 day warranty on the work. That does not pencil out financially for me and is essentially not worth the hassle when it can be replaced for a seemingly small amount.

You get what you pay for, as the old adage goes. If you are looking for a product with longevity this is not it. Hence the title "Throw Away Purchase"

  5. Good camera, Sony is the best for camcorders in my experience, is good for taping in low light conditons with out the nighshot feature.
    Handy, small and light.
    Get and extra battery

5 comments about Samsung SCD23 MiniDV Camcorder with 2.5 LCD.
  1. Among Asian countries they don't rely too much in co-Asian manufactured goods because of poor quality ( except Japanese made) Sony, Canon & Panasonic still has the best quality among electronics.I don't know why samsung, hyundai, Daewoo etc. made it in the US Market that while in fact in Asia, these products are all a piece of Junk.

  2. Yeah, this is a "me too" review. Got the SCD23 as a gift in December of '03. Liked it while it worked, but in April of '07 it was struck by the Black Screen of Death described by other posters. It'll play previously recorded tapes, but in camera (record or standby mode), the image is either totally black or horizontal white streaks (when a bright light is in the scene). I'll be contacting Samsung on Monday, and we'll see how they stand by their product. An internet search on this problem shows that a) it is by no means isolated and b) Samsung has a very poor reputation for providing reasonable customer service in these instances. I'm hoping to be the exception! :)

  3. Yes, I am another victim of The black screen of death. I used my camcorder only 1 1/2years and my screen went black but I am also able to view recorded tapes. Samsung will only offer a refurbished camcorder for $150.00 cost to me. NO THANKS!!

  4. If you plan to buy this camcorder then please know before hand that you are taking a risk. You might get a broken one or not. That is the risk you are taking. When I first purchased this camcorder 3 years ago, I only used it for 1 week and already it broke. The screen was all distorted and was making weird noises. I took it back to bestbuy and they exchanged it for a new one. I have now had this one for 3 years and have had no problems. I love this camcorder. At this point I would not buy a new camcorder because I love this one too much. I have read all of the buyers comments on amazon and yes it is true that this camcorder is cheaply made and is does break but like I said, you are taking a risk if you buy it. It might be broken or it might work fine for 3 years or more like mine. But remember, mine broke too after using it for 1 week but my exchange one has worked for 3 years and counting. So, I guess I wouldnt recommend this camcorder because who wants to buy a camcorder and have to take a risk and wonder if it will be broken when they receive it.

  5. Although Samsung makes extraordinary LCD products, their camcorder line is bottom of the barrel. This is my 2nd Samsung camcorder, and it is also the 2nd time I've been ripped off. My last one (I forget the model) and this one both stopped recording video about a month or two after the warranty expired. Since neither Samsung or Best Buy (where I bought them) care about this decidedly negative customer experience (and apparently seem to think that 1 year of usage is about par for the course) I have decided to no longer buy their products (including their splendid monitors). Companies that consistently screw their customers do not deserve to remain in business. I hope someday Best Buy and Samsung go bankrupt. Buy a Canon, and buy it online. You'll be happy and you'll save money.

2 comments about Canon BG-E5 Battery Grip + Accessory Kit.
  1. These generic Batteries seem to be working just fine.
The cleaning kit is kinda cheaply made.
This case is ok and with lots of room in the side and front pockets for accessories, but there in no room for your Camera with a longer Lens attached if you want to take a 200mm with you so you end up using a different case or this one and a seperate lens case if you are making a day of it. No trouble unless you are in a Park away from things and don't want to lug around a bunch of stuff. If it were just 2 inches wider... Anyways, the Battery Grip is GREAT! Having the extra Battery life sure makes it nice when you are away from an outlet for a while. It comes with an additional insert as well to house 6 AA batteries in case your regular LP-E5 batteries lose their power. That is a pretty handy option too since 7/11s and even Gas Stations sell AA batteries and hardly anyone sells Canon LP-E5 batteries when you are on the road.
I recommend this for parties etc where you will not be changing lenses a lot (Unless you are a professional) and though the cleaning kit is kind of a piece of crap, it is good enough to get you to a photo store where you can get a decent one. It's free anyways and comes with the good stuff you just purchased. Give it to your kid to play with, use the lense cleaning cloth for your sunglasses, reading glasses or cheap field glasses.

  2. I was definitely disappointed, I ordered this and plugged it into my camera, only to find that none of the buttons on the grip worked. It still supplied power to the camera, but it still didn't work... And the bag was broken, and there's really no need for the cleaning kit.

And the customer service wasn't what I expected it to be. They messed up, sending me a bad grip, so they should fix it. They shouldn't expect me to have to pay for the shipping to exchange it for a new one.
