- As a first in any product, you might expect flaws, but this one is fatally flawed.
Video quality is poor. Very poor. I recommend looking elsewhere for much cheaper. This product is not worth your money.
Look at Sony or Panasonic.
- I was extremely excited to buy this camera as it held a lot of promise. I waited months for it to become available. My disappointment with its performance was immediate. Very poor image quality indoors, and almost impossible to operate in low light. I quickly returned the camera and will try others.
- 1. The quality of the recording in anything other than bright daylight is abysmal and cannot be called high definition. It seems to have lines throughout the image, as if there was some kind of interference/static.
2. The camera takes an eternity to focus on the desired object; a blurry image appears instead. That is especially true when the camera is turned on and when using the zoom.
3. The manual says that by pressing the button "BLC" when filming someone indoors against bright light will fix the darkness problem, but it doesn't work (the person filmed is still completely dark, and the person's face can't even be seen).
Overall, the camera does NOT seem to be functioning as a high definition - full HD - quality camera. My 1080i Sony Camcorder that was bought over one year ago has much better image quality.

- This is my first digital camcorder and so far so good. I'm very happy with it. Easy mode is great for beginners like my husband and kids. I love the auto mode where I have control of special effects etc..... I highly recommend and the price is pretty good.
- It was a great little camera until it broke. On it's forth tape, about midway through it beeped with an error and then wouldn't eject the tape. Luckily we still had 2 months left in the warranty. Warranty repair was fast!
It was fixed and returned stating "Replaced capstan motor assy, fuse. Cleaned and adjusted tape path and torqued".
I researched the net after it happened and found it's a pretty common problem with canon camcorders. Not sure why I didn't find that info before I bought it with as much research as I did then. From what I've read, the cost to repair this problem once it's out of warranty is around two hundred.
It's still a great camera, but breaking after less than 4 hours is pretty sad. It also didn't have a rough life, we were using it to film our first child. We would take it out of it's case, film for awhile and it went right back in it's case, never left the house.
- Great camera, easy to operate and very compact as well as reliable.
- Consumer Reports recommends the Elura 80. It's a good camera at a great price. It's small, easy to use, light, and functional. It's inexpensive and overall a great buy.
If you plan to transfer content to a computer for editing, however, you should know that you need a FireWire cable that does not come with the camera. That little fact isn't really documented anywhere obvious, so I spent quite a few minutes trying (unsuccessfully) to get the content transferred via USB cable. So, buy one. And Canon, start including one!
- I owned this camera for a short time. When it was working, it was a nice camcorder that took nice video and was pretty simple to use. However, after a few tapes, the tape started to eject no matter what I did and always displayed an error message "Remove the Cassette". I did some research online and was amazed to find how many people have experienced the same problem. The camera now no longer works because it will not accept any tapes. As soon as you try to put them in, it ejects them out with this error message. It sounds like Canon is not exactly easy to deal with on this issue and the problem is chronic and affects alot of MiniDV camcorders in it's line. This was my 2nd defective Canon DV camcorder in the last 2 years. I think I am staying away from Canon in the future - very bad experiences and the quality is very poor.

- This camcorder is user friendly with many great functions but, unfortunately, performes poorly in low-light situations or while shooting indoors with poor color reproduction. The color improves a bit with the NightAlive function but the shutter speed is so slow it causes a blurred image. NightAlive function cannot compare with the superb effect of MagicPix that Panasonic provides on their camcorders. In good light the picture sharpness, although good, is nowhere close to a SONY.
I returned my JVC GRDVL820U and am buying a SONY !!

- This is my second camcorder. My first-a Sony-met an untimely end with the ground with assistance from gravity and loose fingers.
This JVC is lightyears ahead of that Sony. Packaging is very nice. The included bag is usable and a keeper. To put some things in perspective. I always spend a little extra to get the top notch quality. Only Lexus, only Craftsman, only Oxford, etc..You get it. Electronics-only Toshiba,Sony,JVC, and Hitachi. No GE, BMW, Aiwa, ,Yugo, or Zenith here. I compared camcorders for 6 months before this purchase. Features first, price second. So to break it down: PROS: 1) Very very good video picture 2) Stability control is good 3) One of the sleekest looking camcorders on the market. Simply gorgeous. 4) HUGH 3.5" LCD that makes others at the amusement park drool 5) Remote works well 6) Very quite 7) Memory card slot that accepts Secure Digital-SD and Multi Media cards. Perfect because they go right into my Pocket PC phone to view and take the pictures with me. 8) Firewire, USB ports for fast transfer rates 9) Bright night lite 10) OK still pictures-even at 1280 mode. Not digital camera quality, but good for a camcorder. 11) Megapixel CCD for great tone/contrast 12) Good documentation 13) Good sound with no echo effect as in other camcorders 14) Comes with a USB cable. Also accepts universal Fireqire cables which you would already have if you have Firewire on your system.CONS: 1) Battery life a little weak. Upgrade to the 3 hour battery for only $...off Ebay 2) Limited warranty-All camcorders regardless of make are problem prone. JVC only offers a 90/1 year while others have 1 year/1year or more. 3) No such thing as Night Mode. It simply does not record in very low/dark settings-This is normal for all high megapixel digital cameras though. I got it home, opened the package, charged it, and making movies within an hour. I opened MovieMaker in Windows XP ,pressed play in the JVC and record in MovieMaker and imported the movies all within 5 minutes. Editing was also a breeze. I loaded the supplied JVC software, but found the software in XP to be more than suffecient. I would highly recommend this camcorder to anyone looking for a digital quality camera. Plus, the price has come down to around $...if you really shop around. You will not be dissapointed.
- I confess... I made the unforgivable mistake !!!!!
Before buying my camcorder, I browsed the web for endless hours, for 2-3 months, looking for the best product within a reasonable price range. I kept IGNORING the SONY till the end, because it was a $100-150 more than the best I eventually found ....the JVC GRDVL820U. I should never have written that check without holding a SONY in my palm and seeing what it has to offer. I got my JVC and proudly used it the first 2 weeks ....but much was missing ....it didn't live up to my expectations. The pictures were good but not sharp, as would be expected of a MegaPixel camcorder. Indoor shooting and shooting in low light was a pain ....color reproduction was horrible in subdued light. I was lucky I could return my camera and get my money back .....because soon I built up enough courage to walk upto a SONY dealer and try the DCR TRV38 ......AND IT LEFT ME SPEECHLESS!!! The color reproduction, even in low-low light is incredible. It enhances the picture tone and brightness beyond imagination. The picture sharpness is unbelievable ....truely MegaPixel. It has terrific functions, way-way advanced features, exceptional craftsmanship and looks. The SONY stands out at the top and has no challenger. I don't mind the extra $100 or 150. I really can't believe I ignored SONY initially!!! So.... DON'T BUY A CAMCORDER UNLESS YOU TRY A SONY !!!!
- After using this camera very happily for about a year and a half, suddenly videos became very blocky when onscreen objects moved. Now, instantly, everyone reading this is going to say, "How obvious, the heads are dirty." But I don't think this is the case. I have cleaned the camera with a cleaning tape about once every two or three weeks, or when it looked like the heads needed cleaning. But about two months ago, that stopped helping. The picture has become progressively blockier. A couple of days ago, I gently cleaned the heads with q-tips and a non-harming cleaning solution, but this did nothing to improve the camera's condition.
I recently went to Best Buy and talked to a salseman there, who said more complaints are made about JVCs regarding this matter than Canon or Sony. Believe me, I didn't want to switch brands - as I had been using and liking my JVC camera, as I said, for about 1 1/2 years. But soon I'll be getting a Canon and throwing the old JVC away. It's unlikely I'll buy from them again.

- I'm reading some of the reviews, and I just don't get it. First it does come with batteries. It also does have a place for extended memory which I highly recommend. I purchased a 512MB for $20.00. I mean I don't know anybody that only keeps the internal memeory. Most only have about 32MB, and that's not enough for any camera. The only thing missing is a flash, which is included in the 8200, but the megapixels is only 3.0 compared to the 5200's 5.4. Fot the small price and nice specs you can't go wrong otherwise just spend 2,3 hundred and get something better. You get what you pay for. Pay $20,000 and buy a Hyundai or pay $60,000 and buy a Mercedes. Both will get you around town. This is a great little item, but it's not a $300.00 camera.
- When I bought this camera I assumed it had flash, it doesn't. It only takes good pictures in certain lighting and the pixel quality is not as good as I thought it would be either. Also it goes through batteries really fast.
- I am fifteen and I do a lot of traveling around the country. I thought it would be fun to take around a camera that was sturdy and not too expensive to record all the interesting and fun things that happen when I travel. I decided to try this product out and I love it!
It doesn't have much memory on its own, so I bought a 128 MB memory card for $13.00, which holds over 200 pictures at a time and over 2 hours of video memory. That's enough for me. You can get memory cards for a good price that hold twice that, too.
The picture is also pretty sharp. The camera doesn't have a flash, though. With a normal houselight the picture usually is a bit yellowish, but not too much. The pictures are great outdoors.
The only downside that really bothers me is the fact that it eats up the batteries so quickly, and the batteries are not rechargeable... just normal AA batteries. So I will have to keep a pack of extra batteries in my purse, just in case.
I read that some people don't like how small the LCD screen is, but I think it's just fine. It's enough to see what you're filming and it's really sharp so it gets details well.
I wouldn't get this camera if it was going to be the family camera. I think it's more just for personal, everyday use. When you upload the movies to the computer, they are in WMA format, which works with Windows Movie Maker and is easy to upload onto the net.
Overall, I think this is a great, handy, well-built camera for an awesome price!
- This little camera is handy...but not always reliable. We took a cruise to Alaska from Vancouver and I thought this would be a great little toy to take with me. Some of the pictures and video turned out great. Some was extremely grainy. Many of the pictures were completely out of focus, and while that does not surprise me on landscapes, portrait shots of people taken less than 12 feet away should not have focus issues. The video recorder itself works ok, but I would suggest spending just a little more and getting something with better quality.
- This camera is small and light, that was a plus. You have to learn how to get around on it, as in deleting, transferring files to the computer, learning how to change options, ect which is kind of confusing and takes time to learn. Unless you get a memory card, dont plan on saving or video taking much..as it doesnt hold much memory at all. Its annoying to have to keep downloading to the computer to have more memory. It came with an awesome cd program for movie making and picture editing. In all, I like the camera, even my daughter can use it without huriting it, but its not for long trips or exppert video taking. And it doesnt cost much, so no big waste in money.

- This is a good product. One complaint is the lack of a quik review. You have to scroll through sensor bar to review videos taken. 400-600 dollars for a 60 gig camcorder w/ dvd quality and decient light levels. It is a solid buy.
- I bought this because my old Sony was acting funny, and I was disappointed that there was no way to have a timestamp on the video. So if I watched my video after 20 years, I would have no way of figuring out when I shot it unless I remembered myself. The unit seemed to go out of focus very often while zooming. The software with it was mediocre, the Everio specific one was atrocious. MiniDV videos can be run through a software to put timestamps on the file, but it seems to be impossible here. I sold it and went back to my old one.
On the pro side, the unit feels compact, though it has a badly made feel to it. No Nightshot feature that I could see.

- The camcorder does not have remote control but there is a battery in the box with remote control written on it. You can not copy the recorded movies on the camputer. other than that it is easy to use abd sufficient.
- I am not yet totally familiar with the operation of the Camcorder as I have only used it a couple of times. I seems to work as it should. I have had trouble with the Light. According to the manual, the light shoud come on when you push the record button and go off when you stop recording but the light stays on as long as the camera is on. Also, once you go in and change items in the menu like 16:9 Wide to OFF. The next time you turn the camera on you have to change it again. On the second day I filmed, I got a lot of static in the sound. Maybe my problems has to do with the fact that I am not totally familiar with the camcorder yet. I will give another review after I use the camcorder for a while.
- This camcorder has a extremeley noisy cassette chasis mechanism, it is
a very annoying and a intermittent problem. Other than that this camera
is satifactory, I believe it is over priced for the quality of the video,
especially recording low light conditions.
- this is the worst camcorder i've ever owned.the picture quality is the worst.i can't get a clear picture unless i focus at one distance.if i move a little,or something moves in the picture it goes out of focus.i haven't got one decent video with this piece of garbage yet. i recommend panasonic,it was the last camera i owned and every picture was crystal clear.it's my fault i didn't do my research before i bought this.
- I won this camera in a contest and now I'm kinda wishing I never had. Practically everything I've shot with this thing has turned out bad in some way or another. From the autofocus that can never decide what it wants to focus on, to the very poor image quality in slightly low lighting situations, to the camera recording glitches in the audio when I capture onto my computer. I know you may look at this thing and feel like the price is right, but I really suggest you just hold out a little while longer to save up a bit more and buy a Canon camera that's not gonna cause you these problems.
