1 comments about Collecting black memorabilia: A picture price guide.

  1. Lots of good stuff in this book, but if you have been collecting for a while there is probably nothing in here you haven't seen. The book focuses on some of the more common items: JN Bank, Cookie Jars, Early Cream of Wheat, etc. However it is beneficial to help you identify what is original and what is a reproduction. Great for beginners.

1 comments about Vintage Farm Tractors.

  1. Good coffee table style book on antique farm tractors. Covers all major manufactures and a chapter on orphans. Shows a good range of tractors for each make, but not the full line or history. Great color pictures. Above average for this style of general book on antique tractors.

2 comments about Buffalo Bill's Wild West: An American Legend.

  1. Great book for anyone who loves the old west, scores of high quality photographs of the best, I repeat the BEST of the old west artifacts, from Colts, to CDV, and cabinet cards, saddles, hats, clothing, etc. Many photos never seen before..accompanied by a strong text, highest recommendations!

  2. I was looking for a gift for a true western history buff. Many of the books out there sugarcoat the story of the West. This one is the best book I have seen on an amazing man. The details of the adventures along with the non-colorized photos are just excellent. For anyone interested in this section of American history, this book should be on your bookshelf. It's also a very good coffee table book. Highly recommended.

1 comments about The Art Trucks of Japan.

  1. One of my first collaboration writing works during the early years of J!-ENT was assisting a writer from Japan for Auto Fashion and Bye-Bee Magazine.

I was always curious about the Japanese auto fashion. From those who race (thanks to my interest in "Initial D") to the hobbiest that just want to make their vehicle look cool.

I was always blown away by the money dedicated to a vehicle's look via its exterior or interior.

But when I started to read Kato Tomoyuki's book "THE ART TRUCKS OF JAPAN", I was floored by the look and financial dedication that a few truck drivers have done for their delivery trucks.

From the amount of aluminum/metal and the paintings on delivery truck, the only thing that these trucks can't do is transform to some mecha robot because looking at it, the sheer coolness is so unlike what I've seen here in the United States, these are owners who are passionate for making their delivery trucks stand out.

Some look like futuristic vehicles with weaponry but in actuality, it's just the look.

Also, possibly inspired by the neon lights of a Tokyo metropolitan city, some of these trucks at night tend to exhibit a similar appearance as lights of various colors fill the delivery trucks from all sides.

The book does a great job and showcasing various trucks from day and night, various shapes and sizes and some that look like a truck meets Las Vegas/Shibuya to a truck that seems to have collided and meshed with Decepticons of Transformers fame. That's how cool these trucks really look.

The book of course is mostly a photo book but you do get a two-page forward by Clive France discussing the Japanese trend of art trucks and very informative information and brief history can be found on these two pages.

5 comments about Ocean Liner Collectibles (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. Outwater picked a fascinating subject. Her text is well thought out and the quality of the pictures are superb. Where the author hits a bump is that she had too much from modern liners and not enough from the older liners. Also the guesstimates on the prices of the items were a bit high. As a serious collector I think they were raising the rates on certain items long before their time.

  2. A wonderful book for collectors and those just wanting to learn more about ocean liner history. Informative and filled with great pictures. Will make you want to book your tickets.

  3. Myra and Eric have recreated the glory of Ocean Liner travel by assembling many fantastic artifacts in this book. Although I was born too late to have experienced this great way of travel, I can now imagine what it must have been like. Reading the menus, seeing the china and crystal, or gazing at the elaborate certificates commemorating a voyage makes me realize how much we have sacrificed by replacing the slow luxury of steam ship passage with the fast cost-cutting airplane. This book allows one to begin collecting and reliving an era by providing a benchmark of prices and diversity of collectable memories.

  4. I think that Myra and Eric Outwater did a fantastic job of assembling a vast array of interesting collectibles and relevant stories. The book really piqued my desire to go on an ocean liner and explore what elegant travel used to be. It is a must have for ocean liner lovers and experienced travelers. Makes for a great coffee table book as well.

  5. Ms. Outwater did a very nice survey work on the subject. On top of it it is nicely printed and with very good photos. Just two aspects reduce its importance as a reference book to serious collectors: 1 - Prices, in its majority, are faraway for the reality, considering that it was published in 1998; 2 - It excludes a very important aspect of ocean liner memorabilia: stock certificates of the ocean line companies

2 comments about Submarines: Leviathans of the Deep.

  1. T.L. Francis' Submarines is interesting, and covers the development of the submarine in the navies of the world, combined with its use and deployment. Filled with pictures and text, it is very useful for thise seeking to learn about the broad scope of submarine history before venturing into the more complex territory of Blind Man's Bluff or a World War II topic.

  2. The pictures are great! However, the text is filled with so many historical errors as to cast doubt on the entire book. Examples: p16 Turtle attacked Eagle in New York, not Boston, Harbor. Eagle was not copper sheathed until after the Revolution. p79 Nautilus did not finish off Soryu. As JANAC knew even in 1945, Nautilus attacked Kaga. The only torpedo that hit failed to explode. p80 Lockwood did not become Commander of Submarines, Pearl Harbor until Feb'43. p86 Wahoo did not fire five torpedos, it fired all six in the famous down-the-throat shot. p87 WWII US submarines were most assuredly equipped with air search radar. In fact, Plunger, going on the 3rd patrol of the War on 12/14/41, was already equipped with an SD set. p88 Reich saw & heard 3 hits on Kongo, not 1. And so on (I have not cross checked WWI or non-US claims). It's hard to believe the author is an historian.

5 comments about John Deere Collectibles.

  1. this book is not a horrible book it just tries to cover too wide of a subject in to little space it leaves you wanting bad it has pictures with no info on the items in the picture it goes into depth on some items and doesnt even talk about hole segments of others if you have every other book on john deere then go ahead and pick this one up it might have some info you cant find elsewhere other wise get the rest first i was really disappointed

  2. This book goes a long way in filling the void in the hobby of collecting John Deere memorabillia. While numerous books abound regarding John Deere toys, John Deere Collectibles explores the various advertising give aways and promotional items employed by Deere through the years. From watch fobs to brochures to banners and signs, it gives an excellent overview of the breadth and depth of memorabillia out there. This book leaves you excited about what you might aleady possess, or items undiscovered in the attic, barn or flea market. For the novice or experienced collector, or even someone simply nostalgic for John Deere, John Deere Collectibles by Brenda Kruse should be a welcome addition to your library

  3. What A wonderful job Brenda did with the many Deere items that we have forgotten about. This book is for any tractor collector or people with an interest in the way it used to be will LOVE this book.Plus it has some guide lines on what the items are valued at,good job Brenda thank you.Jack=JDFARM:>)~

  4. The great color photos and old memorbilia made this book very enjoyable to read. Wish there had been more of it.

  5. John Deere Collectibles showcases more than 1,000 items associated with John Deere. These collectibles range from the commonplace to the unique. Indeed, many of them were hidden away in collectors' basements and attics, or guarded in the Deere & Company's corporate archives. Profusely illustrated with more than 200 full-color photographs of memorabilia, the 128-page John Deere Collectibles is a "must" for all collectors of this specialized area, and will prove to be a nostalgic, highly recommended and very special treat for anyone who every grew up around and worked their farms with John Deere tractors and products.

2 comments about Standard Catalog of American Cars 1805-1942 (Standard Catalog of American Cars).

  1. I beleive that anyone looking for an automobile that could have been made in the US, will find it in this book. Very well written and informative.

  2. The Author's of this book have done a fantastic job of researching and documenting the early history of the American automobile. I have found this book to be an invaluable reference in researching the history of the automobile stock and bond certificates which I collect.

Even the most obscure and low-key manufacturer is covered. This book is well worth it's price and my only criticism would be...if all other readers used it as much as I do...please publish the next edition in hardcover!!
