Thanks, Pontiac, for having your 75th anniversary the same year that my brother bought one! This was a fun gift that he displays in his living room along with his driving trophies.

2 comments about The Nethercutt Collection: The Cars of San Sylmar.
- My father and I just got back from visiting The Nethercutt Museum. The book does a great job of bringing the museum home with you. If you can get to the museum you can pick up a copy of the book at the reception desk for [money]-a bargain.
- For the first time, all of the automobiles in the Jack Nethercutt Collection are pictured in one book! This book exhibits all the characteristics a book on automobiles should have. Using it's horizontal format to great advantage, photographer Dennis Adler displays all of the cars in all their glory. Mr. Adler understands his subjects and each photograph shows exactly what the viewer would wish to see. The text is short, concise, and highly accurate. Due to space limitations, there is little technical data. This is not missed. Also touched upon, are the Nethercutts' collection of mechanical musical instruments-- pianos and automotive mascots. This book has my highest recommendation and exhibits better photography and more taste than some books costing many times over.

3 comments about GMC: The First 100 Years.
- The definitive resource for GMC trucks, at this time, anyway. Though the book is slim, the authors managed to pack quite a large amount of information and photos in it. All sorts of GMC trucks are covered: light to heavy, old to new, military to civilian. And it doesn't focus only on the trucks; even key personnel changes within GMC are detailed. My only two gripes with the book are, yes, the number of misidentified pictures, and the number of factory photos--more contemporary photos would be nice! However, those minor gripes hardly detract from this excellent book. Overall, a most fascinating read!
- Lots of nice factory pictures, and quite a bit of good story about what was going on behind the scenes at G.M. Truck and Coach. The book's strong point is its coverage of the 1960's, when G.M.C. produced a staggering number of different models. I would recommend it, particularly as there isn't any other titles in print devoted exclusively to G.M.C..
- A number of the truck photos are incorrectly identified. Noticeably in the 1940's and 1950's Being able to identify correct years and models would seem basic to a truck history book. These errors leave the rest of the "Official History" suspect. If you are looking for a pretty coffee table book then this is it. If you are looking for GMC history I would not recommend this book.

3 comments about Standard Catalog of Chrysler, 1914-2000 (Standard Catalog of Chrysler).
- The information inside this book are great for reference and cross reference. Not much in the way of pictures but it catalogs the history and the working parts of the cars.
- Okay for general information. Covers too many years for details about any one model or year.
- A great resource with almost TOO much info to devote alot of print to each car. Lists production numbers, and brings back alot of memories. For having so many models, the book does quite well. Also, nice histories of each Chrysler brand, incl DeSoto, Eagle, and Imperial. Lots of pictures of just about every car listed.
I recommend it as a great overview of Chrysler's developement.

3 comments about California Look Vw.
- I think Jay Tucker Jr is an a-hole who has no idea about why people modify and drive VWs. Perhaps he should stick to Hondas...
- As a coffee table book of flashy pictures of Volkswagens done up in the classic "California Look," this will fit the bill with recent and period photos of the style; the features of which repeated until you expect a quiz from the author. Seume, who has a fixation on these particular period vehicles bordering on the, shall we say, unhealthy, writes as though he is the only one that can possibly appreciate what was basically a short customizing "craze" in late 60's Orange County California. Like many males with automotive fixations, the creators of this style sought to gain individuality through customizing their cars in a nearly identical manner. As with many things weirdly American, Seume notes with pride how this particularly narrow and short-lived styling look has recently gained a near fanatical following internationally, with Finns, Germans, Japanese, and other young men looking to belong and now affording what was basically meant to be an extremely cheap, throw-away automobile taking this style to near-worship in car clubs that approach the rivalry of street gangs. In Europe, the "Cal Look" as it is known in the States, is refered to as "Old School," with current auto part manufacturers mass-reproducing copies of the styling pieces for instant consumption at outrageous prices. Seume loses himself in his writing that borders on the fetishistic, and if a reader actually manages to read the all the copy written by the author, they were truly bored indeed. The photos of the modern examples done up in the style are gourgeous, but in reality toys, never to be driven on the street or seen outside a garage. One begins to wonder about someone who spends $30 to $40,000 on restoration and obscure period customizing pieces for a car that originally sold for $1995. If you like beautiful and period photos of old custom Volkswagens, this book is for you. The publisher could have left out the text written by Seume and no one would have ever noticed.
- If you are one of those people that prefers to see a vw with a set of nice wheels and some nice trick bits, then this is the book for you. It captures the essence of the california look perfectly and could quite easily transform a hardcore vintage enthusiast into a cal look lover. It features several very well written sections covering different areas of influence on the scene. One covers the originators of the look, one the major companies involved with it, and another on the clubs that helped form the scene. Keith Seume has also managed to include a large amount of rare photos of early development taking place, right through to photos of clubs still alive from the heyday of the california look. Once you get this book you will be forever converted to that slammed, agro look of the cal lookers.
