2 comments about The Other Matchbox Toys: 1947-2004, Identification & Value.

  1. I have many Matchbox reference books. This is the one I would use least of all because it is incomplete, poorly set out, poorly referenced, and overall gives the appearance of something which has been tossed together because it was MB material surplus to Vol 1. In other words, a total waste of buyer's money. So be cautioned people - don't go there.

  2. this book was in great shape and just what he said it was.

3 comments about 100 Greatest Baby Boomer Toys.

  1. Reading this book was truly a passage back in time for me. As I was growing up, I played with so many of the toys listed in this book. The Slinky, Lincoln logs, the Spirograph, Cootie, Mousetrap, Etch a Sketch, Mr. Potato Head, Gumby and Pokey, Rock'Em Sock'Em Robots, Twister, Tinkertoys, Frisbees and the Hula Hoop all passed through my hands. With a large number of children my age in the neighborhood, the toys I didn't have were often owned by others. Therefore, reading this book brought back very fond memories of playing with Clive, Sandy, Dale, Rick, Paul, Terry, Cindy and all the other kids who grew up with toys that you physically manipulated. I strongly recommend this book to anyone with a background similar to mine.

  2. This 208 page, softbound walk-through-the-past volume features 250 full color, very large, sharp photos that are a joy to behold. I enjoyed looking at the photos and reading each comprehensive write-up. A real memory jogger. I was quite surprised at the number of these things I actually owned as a child, and welcomed seeing them again in life-like color. Even many of the boxes are shown. There's plenty of interesting text accompanying the photos and year 2000 values. The toys run from Easy Bake Ovens, Slinky, Cootie, Thingmakers, Lincoln Logs, and Spirographs to Tootsietoys, Monster Kits, Pez, Colorforms, Life-Size Kitchens, Gilbert, Renwal Doll Stuff and Captain Kangaroo. You'll really enjoy seeing some of these toys you haven't thought of in years. I have many books on baby boomer collectibles, and this one ranks among the best. Get it and enjoy !

  3. No generation is so defined by its toys as the Baby Boomers. They loved them as kids. They collect them as adults. 100 GREATEST BOOMER TOYS explores the phenomenon. It's fun and it's serious.

First the fun. The books got hundreds of great pictures. It's like a Christmas catalog. Look up old favorites. Discover items you'd forgotten.

And there's a ranking system which seems pretty much designed to provoke arguments. Wait until you see who's #1!

More substantially there are short essays on many of the toys. Little studies in anthropology, in social history, they tell us about the 50's and 60's. The tie-in of G.I. Joe and the draft is, I think, very apt and really well done.

Once you pick it up, you will be drawn in.

2 comments about McDonald Happy Meal Toys from the Nineties: With Price Guide (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. An essential guide for the fast food promotional toy collector, this fine book lists each and every one of the toys given away with Happy meals in the 90s. If you choked on it, it's in here. It even had listings and recent auction prices for some of that weird "McCrying Game" merchandising. A must.

  2. McDonald's Happy Meal Toys from the Nineties is a great book for collectors. This book goes all through 1998, and includes pictures up to the Mulan and Tomagotchi Happy Meals from 1998, with listings for the 1998 toys to follow! This book includes MANY pictures, complete descriptions, as well as prices for just about everything listed. It includes McDonaldland Fun Times, Plates, and other Generic items! This book is a GREAT reference for McDonald's toys, and will help you to identify your toys along with their values! Great reference for the experienced as well as the novice collector!

3 comments about Dinky Toys.

  1. This book is primarily a re-release of earlier editions of the same title by Dr. Edward Force. Its useful portion is an updated price guide by Jeff Bray. This may help a Dinky Toy collector establish the value of his collection. But, since the Sixth Edition is copyrighted 2006, even the guide may be outdated.

  2. The positive thing about this book is that it is dedicated to its subject - and therefore unique, as far as I can see. However, it may have become something of an anachronism. It could benefit from its own website! Because the prices can never be as current as those from on-line auctions. It could also benefit from depicting pictures of the models in chronological sequence for easier reference and within typological groups like cars, military etc. The shots used appear to be from a collection and the groupings random. Sorry Edward, but you need updating old son

  3. This is a very handsome and useful book, in which all models made by Dinky Toys, even from Hong Kong ,are displayed in color. With exception of the airplanes and some of the extraordinary sets, the models are not photographed in detail. Much information about the models is not given (in my opinion not necessary). At the end, prices are given, but these will certainly vary depending on the state of the model and the availability of an original box. The format of the book is such, that it is very easy to take it with you in your pocket.

5 comments about The Unofficial Guide to Japanese and International Transformers (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. Since 1999, Mr. Alvarez has done a great job of providing both the curious observer and hard-core fans a visual guide to the Transformers toy mythos. This addition is a particular triumph because of the wealth of photography of rare figures, both those whose presentation vary dramatically from their North American release and those never released outside of the Japanese market.

It really is a teaser for the community, to leave fans salivating for these rare items.

While the visuals are first rate and Alvarez does an admirable job of walking the reader through the significance and timing of each release, it's clear he is no writer. A lot of his writing borders on the banal, although he does a better job of conveying the message in this edition than he does in others in this series. But as this is really not intended as a great writen masterpiece, the superb organizational job more than compensates for the prose here.

This is a must-have for anyone with a passing interest in Transformers toys.

  2. What I learn was the Transformers were put together by Takara from combining many different toy manufacturers line in Japan. Later in the early 80s a storyline was conceived through the cartoon series and a seperate comic from the existing toy products. This simply mean the story had very little to do with the early toy design. The problems I had with this book is it is not a very good as a toy catalog nor did it described the history in great detail. The writing is not very deep nor long, it just give you a lot of surface information that make you ask for more questions. Each chapter writing contents averaged only about a page long. There are no in depth analysis on the individual toys at all. For the image qualities: The photographs were horrible. The photographers need to learn about lighting and angle. You get a lot of pics of Transformers' boxes, unsharp close-up, reddish tint, redundancy, and a lot of white empty area. As a history book there is not enough for you to own this book, more of a library checkout. Takara's own "Welcome to the World of Transformers" as a toy catalog is much better. There is writing for each toy products and the photo is very professional, but it is in 95% Japanese's' text. I am somewhat happy with this book, but can not recommend it to a casual fan and it was done very generic.

  3. I bought the two guides and I don't see any improvement from one to the other.
A lot of pictures, some trade prices but that' s it.

I expected some explanations but for an "unofficial guide", there is not even a word about the previous transformers (diaclone, kronoform, etc) and/or all the fakes you can find.
There is also no chronology and more over as a european transfan I didn't see something about the european special releases.

In others words: it's every thing but a reference.

You would find much more info by surfing on personnal web sites.

I gonna keep the two books cause there are very nice pictures in them but it's very disappointing.

  4. I liked the original book (80's through 90's) but this book is SO much better. The writting has improved although some dire humour is still there, the pictures are of a better quality and show more details of the variations. A lot of the Japanese Transformers i have never seen before as well as the white Astrotrain and Red Tracks for example. The price guide should really be dropped as it really isn't that neccesary. The only thing that is realy missing is the Programme and comic guides but there could be a chance he's saving that up for another book. It is a good continuation of the series and I'm looking forward to the 2nd edition of the origianl and the Beast Wars book keep up the good work.

  5. Lots of pictures to drool over, and lots of information that I did not know previously. If there are omissions in this one, I am not equipped to point them out. The price lists are still here, and I still consider them unneccessary. Don't use them as a guide if you're looking for a deal ...This is a minor quibble. This is a must have book for the Transformers fan.
