4 comments about Barry Halper Collection of Baseball Memorabilia.

  1. The pictures are indeed magnificent, however, I must demur about the accompanying text which does not provide appropriate, tightly written or in some instances, historically accurate information.

  2. This is an incredible reference, especially for uniforms. The pictures and detail are amazing, and you can generally tell what people thought was real, and what people did not from looking at the prices. The attention to detail in the descriptions is really helpful in identifying stuff today. I wish there were more photos, and sometimes I wish there was an acknowledgement of some of the controversey surrounding some of the items. I really am in awe of the folks who put together this beautiful book, and the incredible pictures. I think this is a great starting point for anyone collecting seriously.

  3. Only one word describes the catalog set.....INCREDIBLE. As a life-long baseball fan, collector, dealer, etc, this set of catalogs, pictures in beautiful crystal clear color, many of the artifacts of America's National Pasttime. Many people were upset at Halper for breaking this collection up. Contratry to that opinion, I believe breaking the collection up allowed SO many people to share in the history of the game. Five million dollars worth of collectibles were purchased by MLB for the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Twenty two million dollars worth were auction in the Sotheby's auction and an unknown amount on amazon.sothebys.com. These catalogs contain relics from every facet of the game......baseball cards dating back to the 1880's.....team and individual photos dating back even farther.....uniforms, bats, balls, gloves from nearly every hall of famer......personal trophies like triple crown, Cy Young, MVP and so much more. Nowhere will you find such a book that illustrates why Baseball is woven through the fabric of America than this catalog. The lot descriptions are carefully crafted to be both a history lesson and a thought (and pocketbook) provoking snapshot of baseball. Never again will there be such a collection amassed. No one has the access to players and probably the funds to acquire such a collection....you get a glimpse at everything important about baseball. Everything good about baseball.....you forget about the strike of 1994, you forget about the high paid cry babies of today and remember the guys that played the game for one reason.....the love of the game. There was team loyalty, work ethics, and so much more that baseball and America as a whole is sometimes seriously lacking today. Spend the bucks.....you won't regret it......

  4. This is the Hall of Fame of baseball memorabilia, without equal. Halper had put together a collection of almost every baseball-related item that could be collected, and these catalogues display most of that collection, including lots of items that you never would have thought even existed. The pictures of the items are terrific, and are worth the price just by themselves. But in addition, this post-auction printing also includes the final bid prices for items in the auction, so it seves as an excellent "price guide" for rare and unusual material - memorabilia you certainly won't find in Beckett's guides or other more generic price references. And, for those of us that think of some of the final bid amounts in terms of hefty mortgages rather than hobby expenses (e.g., $305,000 for a Lou Gehrig jersey!) the book is great fodder for dreams, however unattainable they may be...

5 comments about Bobbing Head Dolls: 1960-2000.

  1. Excellent book, well written on a collectible that has received no coverege for too long.Everything you need to know about old bobbing head dolls.

  2. This book is THE guide to get to help you start your bobblehead collection! It has all the old nodders listed, how tough they are to find, variations, and prices. (...)

  3. Anybody who collects vintage 1960's Bobbing Heads needs to have this book. Tim Hunter is the foremost authority on Japan made "nodders" from the 60's and has spent decades researching them. This book has become the "bible" for Bobbing Head collectors, combining a history lesson, detailed price guide, and helpful hints for collectors. Whether you are a veteran collector or a beginner, this book is a must!

  4. As a long time BB card collector, my parents stumbled onto a bobbing head, an item I didn't have. Needless to say I have gotten hooked, with my collection now over twenty dolls. I read the large print on the cover, and thought it would be just what I needed, but the book is really about dolls from 1960-1972. The author simply blows off the newer versions as being too manufactured and barely covers them. A better detail history of the newer dolls and more aggressive price guide would have made this book a 5star.

  5. I just start collecting bobbing head dolls without any knowledge.I wasn't sure where I can learn about.this book helps me a lot.Gives me lots of info etc....I wish this book had a lot more color-photo of dolls.

2 comments about The Art Of American Game Calls: Duck, Goose, Turkey & More: Identification & Values.

  1. A pleasure to read, compare, learn and provides insight for designing and turning your own calls.

  2. When I purchsed this book, I had in mind to use it as a coffee table book, but when I recieved it I had not been able to let it down long enough to let it gather that coffee table dust....It is the most revealing history of duck calls collected over the years of a highly acclaimed call maker, Joe Jaroski, whom I have had the priveledge to meet with during a Callers Show in Tennessee this year. Not to mention calls made from some of the country's best makers...to the calls made by these same people as novices...evaluating a call for its monetary worth is tricky, but this book will help you learn when it comes to purchasing calls, and what to look for when collecting calls. It is a great book to have and to share with friend.

2 comments about Pinball Perspectives: Ace High to World's Series.

  1. I bought this book to help me understand pinball playfield design. While it has been a great resource to learn about machines, it is not as in depth as I was hoping. Each chapter has 1 full photograph of the whole machine (like on the cover) and several smaller close up shots showing important features. For my purposes, as I read about the machines features and rules I had to keep skipping back to the beginning of the chapter to see the full photo to get a better understanding.

I would have liked to see more pictures and perhaps some diagramming of ball movement on the playfield.

A definite plus is when you get a chapter with comments from the artists or designers involved and they share with you a bit of what was going on in their industry at the time. Also the snapshots of people playing pinball in various locations as well as Marco Rossignoll's snippets of personal life add charm to this book.

  2. Pinball Perspectives: Ace High to World's Series
This is a fantastic book! Hundreds and hundreds of beautiful photos accompanied with great text describing these nostalgic machines. This book is a "must have" for all pinball collectors or anyone who has an interest in mechanical marvels!

4 comments about Collecting Baseball Memorabilia: A Handbook.

  1. This book is great for anybody that has an interest in collecting baseball memorablia. Mr. Zachofsky has unique suggestions for collecting autographs and how to display them.

  2. I received this book as a gift and was very impressed with the suggestions and the history it gave. I have since begun creating my own Baseball Memorabilia Room and I have even gotten a few Hall of Famer autographs. I find this book extremely helpful for any collectors, experienced or new to the hobby. I think this book is fantastic and it is the "BIBLE" of any collecting manual. With the upcoming baseball season, it really makes a great read especially if you're interested in starting a memorabilia room. The forward to the book is written by one of my all time favorites, Duke Snider -- very impressive! Also, I love the pictures that are included! I highly recommend this book!

  3. After 5 years of struggling collecting baseball memorabilia, I've finally found the magna carta for this fascinating hobby. Attempting to collect the key signatures for this hobby is the ultimate goal. Collecting Baseball Memorabilia A Handbook makes it easy, enjoyable and is a great investment. Lastly, since I've purchased this book, I've added 5 Hall of Famers to my collection without the stress because of the knowldedge found in this book.

  4. Since collecting baseball cards many years ago I have always been an admirer of Baseball memorabilia collections. I never started on because it always seemed too difficult. This book makes it easy. From the aficionado to the novice, from the young to the old, this book encompasses all aspects for starting, adding to, or preserving a baseball collection. Amazing insight into the collecting world it gives great advice and tips that are so valuable to a new or even seasoned collector. This book is the "Ball Four" for collectors as it gives an insiders view from someone did it. It has interesting comments and synopsis of Hall of Famers and baseball park and team information. Concise and easy to read with great photos and a foreword by the "Duke of Flatbush",my hero. A must read for anyone into collecting or who enjoys baseball memories.
