5 comments about Turtles & Tortoises (Beginning Vivarium Systems).
- This book is one of three written by Reptiles Magazine editor Russ Case. All three are extremely easy to read, full of useful information and a great introduction to the care & keeping of reptiles.
My teenage son has read all three and the only problem now is choosing what pet to start with! I can highly recommend all three.
- Don't let the fact that this book is designed for kids fool you. If you just want to get some beginning knowledge about these creatures, you'll get it quickly by reading this. It's also just fun to read with lots great photos. It's part of a trio of books by this author that I bought for my friend's 9-year-old. The others are about lizards and snakes. I highly recommend all three.Lizards (Beginning Vivarium Systems)Snakes (Beginning Vivarium Systems)
- This book is ideal for beginners and is both fun and easy to understand. Kids can learn fun facts about these great animals and also find out how to best care for them so their pet has a long, healthy life. Definitely a must-have for new turtle and tortoise keepers!
- everything I ever wanted to know about Turtles & Tortoises... and more
simply a great book, covers the gamut with great photos & illustrations, and easy to follow writing
- I bought this book for my 10 year old grandson who had just acquired a pet turtle while on a family camping trip. After reading the book we realized the turtle should be returned to his natural habitat and we did just that. Now my grandson is using the book for research on how to properly obtain and care for one of these creatures. The author's authority on his subject and his reader-friendly style made this a valuable and enjoyable experience for a young pet lover.

5 comments about Newts and Salamanders (More Complete Pet Owner's Manuals).
- This is not the best book about newts and salamanders, but
it is very very ok if you look to the price up there!!
Lot of nice images, ideas and some diseases info. I liked.
- This book was helpful when I decided to keep a newt because I was able to find out what I could feed it. It did not give information about a few of the species pictured in the book, but for a beginner there is information about feeding and housing that is useful.

5 comments about Giant Lizards.
- For a book that's almost 20 years old, this is a really wonderful birds-eye view of big lizards. I remember that it came out about the same time as Vivarium magazine, the first serious lizard book that addressed herpetoculture. Yeah, a lot has happened since then, but I understand that there's a new edition coming out soon. This book is still a nice read, has great photos, and was put together by someone who really seems to like the lizaards he wropte about.
- The pictures are great and some of the info on wild lizards is good, but dont try to use the info in this book to raise a monitor, it is outdated 20+ year old recycled info. For a good book on natural history get King a Greens book or Harold DeIsle book. Get Daniel Bennets new book for captive husbandry on grassland monitors.
I dont think many of the authors monitors lived very long on some of his books advice and I know they didnt reproduce using that info. Dont get me wrong he has good intentions but some bad advice. Research many other books to reference any captive husbandry info contained. There are some good drawings, and some other good advice contained in it.
- This book is an excellent overview of the "giant" lizards and touches on their biology and husbandry. It is packed full of beautiful photographs, and all the main families are covered: the Varanidae, Helodermatidae, Teiidae, Agamidae, Scincidae, and Iguanidae. I am always amazed by the variability in skin patterns exhibited by lizards, espeically in the Varanus tristis orientalis. You can feel the author's fascination with these marvels of the animal kingdom and he also gives a brief discussion on their vetinary care. I would have hoped he would have had more to say on the "black spot" problem in green iguanas but does not mention it.
Lizard lovers and all those interested in the keeping them as pets will enjoy the book, as well as those who intend to make herpetology their chosen profession.
- Giant Lizards provides excellent, easy to understand information for those interested in Monitors, Agamids, Iguinids etc. It's a must have for any serious collector or researcher.
- This book is considered a land mark book by reptile breeders and hobbists. The primary focus is monitor lizards, but it does a complete over view of all giant lizards (3 feet or larger). This his all of the info one needs to properly care for a lizard.

2 comments about Encyclopedia of Reptiles and Amphibians.
- A truly comprehensive coverage of the entire group of reptiles and amphibians - the turtles, lizards, snakes, salamanders, frogs and their allies - that any hobbyist or weekend naturalist can turn to for answers to her or his questions about both common herps and the rarely seen species. The author uses an interesting narrative style to describe the lives and characters of hundreds of species from North America and around the world. Although Breen, a herpetologist of long standing, emphasizes the more familiar species likely to be found in pet shops or collected by the average enthusiast, many obscure and rare groups are also discussed in detail.
The almost 600 photos provide a gallery such as is seldom seen in a book for the average naturalist, picturing everything from common snakes found in your back yard to seldom seen Australian lizards and Africal frogs.
Breen doesn't just tell you about reptiles and amphibians, he also tells you how to keep them successfully in captivity and get the most out of observing them in nature. Housing, maintenance, feeding and foods are discussed in detail, and there are also hints on purchasing your pet or collecting it.
If you are in the market for a single good volume covering the entire range of reptiles and amphibians, this Encyclopedia is the book for you.
- I have seen this, I like this book what I can learn about reptiles and amphibians in the world. Thanks

1 comments about The Tanganyika Cichlid Aquarium.
- This is a good book for learning about Tanganyikans...
It has alot of useful information for such a small book. For someone unfamiliar with the habits of Shell-Dwellers this is very informative. It gives you recommended tank sizes for most of the popular Tangs (Neolamps, Frontosa, Calvus, Lamps) as well as a limited compatability between certain species. There is a section about which plants can survive in an African tank... this is hard info to find. The only think that I found lacking was a complete section of photos, descriptions, specs and stats of each species. This would've added alot to the book and made it into a true reference guide. In any case it is a very fun book to look at from time to time. There's always stuff in there to learn about.

3 comments about Tree Frogs (Complete Herp Care).
- This book was quite thourough. I bought it to learn some more about tree frogs before I purchased one. I think that it is quite informative and not intimidating.
- This is a good book, gives you a lot of information. I gave it 4 stars because it doesn't give you specifics like I would have wanted. An example is that it doesn't tell you exact humidities that are needed, just a range of how much the humidity can go up or down. I also wish the terrarium set up pictures could have been bigger. Also more on illnesses would have been helpful. But I am glad I got this particular book. I looked at a lot and this seemed to be the best one.
- This book was very informative in describing the needs of tree frogs. The section on feeding was a particular point of interest for me as I am a novice at keeping frogs. Overall it was a good read.

2 comments about Poison Dart Frogs (Success With An Amphibian Pet).
- This book is very concise at only 80 pages, but packed with useful information about keeping and breeding poison dart frogs. There is extensive information about setting up the terrarium, including appropriate and inappropriate plant selections, food sources and their breeding, and care and breeding of the frogs themselves. The more common species are covered in individual chapters, but minor species are omitted. The photography is exquisite and more than justifies the purchase price. I have read several similar references, but this clearly the most useful to the hobbyist.
- this is a great book for you interested out there. It talks about everything on the surface, but there is alot more things in depth not mentioned. Like the frogs all cost from $45 to $300, a drop of poison from the skin can kill about 200 adults...and so on. It is a very expensive pet and not recommended for beginners. As a professional herp breeder i don't recommend this pet to just anyone but the BOOK IS GREAT for everyone.

4 comments about General Care and Maintenance of Popular Tortoises (The Herpetocultural Library Series).
- This had the potential to be a wonderful book, but it is lacking in the information that you would expect to get in the books of this series. The diseases and disorders section is esentially non-existant and the specific care of the different species is far too generalized and totally lacks detail. It is a very good book for beginners or those looking for overviews of the major species and their care, but that is about it. Still waiting for the Tortoise Manual - which is long overdue.
- This book is an excellent source of information for good turtle- tortoise husbandry. Robert DominguezV.P. Chino Valley Branch, Caliifornia Turtle and Tortoise Club (CTTC)CVBCTTC@WEBTV.NET
- I have used this book extensively to help me care for several species of tortoises, Leopards, Sulcatas, Redfoot and Yellowfoots. The content is highly accurate and every tortoise keeper should use this book as his "bible" of care specs.
- The author's wide knowledge of herpetology and many guides have saved countless thousands of reptile and amphibian lives. This book adds to that humane record.
