5 comments about 20th Century First Edition Fiction /2000 Edition: A Price and Identification Guide : The Complete Guide for Collectors of Used Books (Twentieth Century ... Fiction: A Price & Identification Guide).
- In spite of the negative reviews, this book is just what I was looking for regarding first editions. I have an earlier edition of the Ahearn's book and that was a waste of money.
- I'm not sure exactly how this guy came up with his criteria for what to include in this book and what to leave out. There is no Kurt Vonnegut, no Toni Morrison, no Saul Bellow, and no J.D. Salinger. Morrison and Bellow are both Nobel laureates in "20th century fiction"! And Salinger's first edition of Catcher in the Rye is probably one of the most sought-after books in this category. On top of this, the book is full of editorial errors. Not worth the trouble.
- a very shoddy and error-filled attempt at a reference manual for modern firsts. has peter benchley, but not james ellroy, dean koontz, but not dennis lehane, micheal dorris, but not robert crais. a waste of money.
- Some useful info but it's absurd that this is a "2000 edition" and covers books up to about 1993! What did he do when he updated this book, close his door and stay inside from 1993 to 1999 writing this book, ignoring any books written after 1993? Weird.
What boggles my mind is how few books there are on pricing and grading first edition books, and the ones that do exist are not very good, including Aherns. Why can't someone come out with a decent one like they do for comic books (Overstreet, etc)?
- Mr. Lee, at least in the brand new 2001 Edition (and I can only assume that this edition would be an improvement over the 2000 edition), pays little or no attention to British Editions, especially when he's considering British authors.
The first three entries in this new edition are Douglas Adams, Eric Ambler and Jeffrey Archer, all British, and in each case he either disregards the TRUE First Edition (British) or lists the American Edition first. By listing the American Edition before the correct British Edition he implies that the US is the true first. THAT is not only dispensing inaccurate information, but for beginning collectors, misleading information. I am not certain if this was an oversight, or if it was done deliberately. The reason I say that is that perhaps Mr. Lee wants to sell his own American Editions and by listing them first in the guide, he fools neophyte collectors into believing that a Simon and Schuster Edition of Jeffrey Archer's best book, "Kane and Abel" is the only appearance of that book. That the Hodder and Stoughton TRUE First Edition doesn't exist. That attitude is irresponsible.

5 comments about The Wonderful World of Collecting Perfume Bottles: Identification & value guide (Wonderful World of Collecting Perfume Bottles: Identification &).
- This is a wonderful book, however it caters mostly for the American collector.
Regardless of this fact I am constantly referring to it. Well presented and good information.
- I was so pleased with this book. I am purchasing four more copies for my daughter and nieces. We are all new perfume bottle collectors, and this is just the book we needed to further our education in the field of perfume bottle collecting. "A GREAT BOOK BY A TALENTED AUTHOR."I hope to see more books from Ms. Flanagan in the future.
- WOW!! Just what was needed, a general, broadbased collector book for perfume bottle collectors. This book is interesting, accurate, educational, and shows so many bottles for identification. The chapter on the Bacorn Bottles is superb, and greatly appreciated. I cannot recommend this book more highly than a five star*****
- What a wonderful, beautifully designed book!! It is refreshing to see coverage of ordinary bottles for the new collector and many masterpieces from the past. This broad based coverage by the author is just what was needed for the perfume bottle collecting world. Lost bottles are introduced, Sandwich masterpiece bottles are shown in all their glory. Besides coverage of many "never before shown bottles," the author seeks to educate and spark interest in the wonderful world of collecting perfume bottles
- I'm returning this book in disgust. It contains low end examples that even the newest perfume bottle collector would be bored by. In addition, some of it is poorly resaerched and some is just plain WRONG. Even the physical quality of the book is off.. the pages are strangely thin and floppy. Spend the extra money and buy a book by Jackie Jones North or the Lefkowiths...you'll find this book to be neither a good resource nor a good read.

1 comments about Combs and Hair Accessories P (Antique Pocket Guides).
- Written from the point of view of the collector this book gives an excellent historical review of combs and hair ornaments of all types and styles. Not only precious stone and diamond items are covered but those made from more humble and available materials like turtle-shell, ivory, coral and gilt metal. The author goes into a great deal of detail about social facts, history and etiquette which lay behind the development of different styles of ornaments. There is also information on collecting and looking after these ornaments.

5 comments about Collectible Compact Disc Price Guide 2 (Collectible Compact Disc Price Guide).
- This book contains an extremely detailed history of digital media. The listings are out of date but the information contained in the first half of the book MORE than makes up for this shortcoming. Anyone interested in collecting cds NEEDS a copy of this book. It would also be useful for students of history and technology.
- Because of cd collecting being relatively new there hasn't been an established price guide so some pricing may be off. However this guide cotains a great deal of cd information and goes a long way in identifying rare and collectable cd's. When I first purchased this book about 6 years ago I wasn't even aware of collectable cd's. Since then I found countless rare and valuable cd's in used cd bins.
- 80% of my collection was not even listed in this book. I became very frustrated when they didn't even list the complete bands discography. To top that off, most were singles that were listed.
- Admittedly, some of the pricing is way off and could use a refresh. But this field of collecting is so new (even the author points that out) that it is very difficult to establish pricing. For overall layout and identification of early CD's, there is simply no other guide out there. Great coverage of things like the "Edison Sampler", which was the first compact disc ever pressed in the U.S. As a bonus, Laser Discs are covered as well.
- This is the best book on music collecting I have ever seen. The two prior reviews couldn't be more WRONG! This guide has tons of color pictures of collectible CDS and information on just about every aspect of the compact disc and CD collecting. The book also has a huge listing of collectible CDs from around the world (more so than most record guides). This is a book that I have read over and over again and always find something new. I give this book five stars and is a must for every CD collector. (Plus it only cost me the same as a CD.)

1 comments about Successful Gun Trading (Outdoorsman's Edge) (Outdoorsman's Edge).
- I grew up hunting moose in Newfoundland with rifle by driving them to other hunters who lay in wait. I recently switched to solo archery hunting and I wanted to learn more about the other methods to approach my annual moose hunt. There are numerous books out there on deer and elk hunting however information specific to moose hunting is very sparse, to say the least. As such, this book fills a huge gap. I found it to be very informative regardless of your weapon of choice and it specifically covers well the strategies of Calling, Using Decoys and Using Scents to hunt moose. This book will not teach you how to call moose however if you already know how to call then this book will provide you with good information to help you with your calling strategy. One thing in particular that I like about Mr. Kelso's writing is his use of actual hunting scenarios to explain his various strategies. This book is certainly a worthy read. For those that are looking to hunt moose using archery tackle then I would also recommend "The Bowhunter's Field Manual" by Judd Cooney as a good companion to this book as it has an excellent chapter on hunting moose with archery tackle.
