1. Kwinter's analysis is extraordinary. His method is fairly eclectic, however, as some would issue this as a detraction, he compensates by having a wonderful writing style and a copious amount of mastery of the concepts that he addresses. I have read several treatises on architecture from 'philosophers'(i.e., Foucault, the Sitiuationists, et al.), but what is novel here is a designer explaining the epistemological frame of reference in the edifice, or engendering from it. Furthermore, it is completely amazing to think of the ostensibly disparate entities of Futurist architecture, quantum mechanics and relativity and Kafka as all burgeoning within the same epochal stuctures. I did find it odd that the author did not address Lefevbre's space/time tomes and rhythmanalysis. Kwinter is worth reading, and I think this book will be written about for years to come.

While The Environmental Imagination: Technics and Poetics of the Architectural Environment could have also been featured in our Arts section, it's reviewed here for its wider applications to any college-level holding strong on poetics and environment: essays consider qualitative dimensions of the environment and both old and new technologies of mechanical services, building design choices, and diversity.

This book is written in a very easy to use format, similar in some respects to the 'idiots guides' and can be used as an on the spot reference for issues as they occur if the world of the practice of providing professional services to make a living, or it can be easily read cover to cover as to avoid pitfalls others have already overcome. The content covers several topics from resolving employee and client relationship struggles to master planning and marketing your firm to mundane business decisions over accounting issues, filing, time management etc. and working favorably with bankers for obtaining business loans. There is even a section of standardized forms which one can use in the office. Once your professional competance it at a level where you are attracting work you will be confronted with so many issues which we are not taught how to handle in college that this reference becomes a valuble tool to help keep the majority of your focus on your projects and design.
