1 comments about Miller's Silver & Sheffield Plate Marks: Including a Guide to Makers and Styles (Pocket Guides).

  1. It took you soooooo long to send it that I was out of town by the time it arrived. The postoffice declared it undeliverable. I paid with Paypal for crying out loud.

1 comments about Georg Jensen: 20th Century Designs (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. For all Silver dealers, collectors and appraisers, this book should be THE reference book on George Jensen; no library is complete wihtout it. The pictorials from a Jensen catalogue are indespensible for identying Jenson pieces, and the numbering scheme is detailed with the photographs, making the book easy to use and most informative.

3 comments about Art Nouveau and Art Deco Jewelry: An Identification and Value Guide.

  1. While this book might be of some use to an antiques dealer, the photos are much to small and of to poor a quality to be of any use to a student of jewelry. I was very disappointed.

  2. I think that this author had a lot of good information, but needed better help from an editor in organizing and presenting it.

The first section is disorganized and hard to follow. It was intended to cover the "inspirational forces" for Art Nouveau and Art Deco jewelry (people, places, ideas, and events) but the way it was presented made the information not very valuable, at least to me.

One thing I learned---while I knew that "nouveau" meant new, I learned that "deco" meant "young.

Section 2 had some wonderful color plates of pieces of jewelry and the third section had lists of designs, motifs, and materials for "new art" jewelry.

Section 4 had "thumbnail sketches" of jewelers, jewelry designers/makers, manufacturers and retailers.

The last section was an interesting glossary of jewelry terms and types. I especially enjoyed the information about hallmarks, enamel, combs, hatpins, and purses (mesh and beaded).

  3. Baker presents a definitive guide to Deco and Nouveau Jewelry. She outlines the historical influences on the designs, offers beautifully photographed and representative pieces and concludes with a glossary and price guide. Her format is logical and the placement of the price guide as an addendum allows periodic updates that keep the book current. Overall a helpful guide for the novice or experienced collector and a pleasurable book for simply viewing lovely jewelry pieces. The paperback format allows affordability.

3 comments about Antique Sweetheart Jewelry (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. It is clear from the level of detail and the care taken with the photographs that this book was a labor of love. Highly recommend this book.

  2. The book is a great source of information for all aspects of Sweetheart collecting! It covers WWI and WWII mostly. American is the main focus with a little British and Homefront thrown in. It is an invaluable source for those just starting out or a serious collector but there are some problems. The pictures are prolific BUT some so small you can hardly tell what is what. Some pins are misidentified or put into the wrong category. That does not detract from the help it will give you, mostly because there are only three guide books on the market that deal with sweetheart jewelry. The price guide is way, way off and some of the information must be taken with a grain of salt. I would say buy it if you collect but if you want to know prices, go to eBay or a militaria fair and talk to the real experts. Mr. Snider needs to research better, proof his books better and really focus on sweethearts. If this is supposed to be a book on sweetheart jewelry, leave out the playing cards, posters, stickers, banners, pillow covers and all the other junk he jams in this book. If that stuff was not there, the photos would be better and so would the help the book offers.

  3. This wonderful, comprehensive book, is a true joy to not only read but have in your collection. It affords easy access to a wide variety of sweetheart jewelry - the homefront equivilant of medals and patches - with concise, easy to read explanations of each piece. The pricing guide at the end of the book is especially useful when buying - or selling - a piece of history. A MUST read and own book for any sweetheart jewelry collector!

5 comments about Collectible Silver Jewelry: Identification and Value Guide.

  1. "Collectible Silver Jewelry" provides a brief, yet reasonably comprehensive, guide to silver jewellery and jewellery makers from around the world. This book covers most of the major silver jewellery producing countries of the world, including the U.S., Mexico, Peru, Scandinavia, the U.K., Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, China, Japan and Siam, and for each country, it provides a guide to all of the main silversmiths and manufacturers of that country. For each manufacturer, a brief history is given, along with a photograph or illustration of the maker's marks used. A valuation guide (with pictures) is also provided at the end of each section to give the reader some idea of the style of jewellery produced in each country and its value (although this book was first published in 2001, all values were updated in 2005).

This book is very well presented. It is a large size hardback with glossy pages and full-colour photographs throughout. A glossary of jewellery terms is provided at the back, as is a detailed index, making this book very easy to use.

  2. This was a general book on Silver and I felt it did not go into depth. I do not like it as much as others but it covers many country silver jewelry.

  3. I haven't found another book that covers what this one covers. It is well organized and has lots of good photos. There are written commentaries about the various manufacturers of silver jewelry, discussions about mid century artisans, and great information about silver jewelry from Scandinavia, Mexico and other places in the world. There are additional resources in the back of the book and lots of information about hallmarks as well. I can go on and on but take it from me, this is the best book out there on silver jewelry.

  4. This book has been fabulous because it includes a broad span of silver jewelry, not just one specific type. It has helped me identify many pieces. Great pictures, great explanations. Includes many different marks. I love it and use it all the time.

  5. Whether you are an expert collector or a neophyte, you will find this book a valuable reference source. It is illustrated in full-color and covers the range of silver jewelry makers exhaustively, maker by maker, including illustrations of makers' marks.

3 comments about Ou of the Dust: Utah's Lost Mines and Treasures.

  1. This book is well-written, and gives a bit more information about some of the great legends of Utah treasure history, but it doesn't go into enough detail. This would be fine for the casual, armchair treasure hunter, but for someone who wants to hit the trail and find these places, it is seriously lacking. It makes me wonder if the real way to make money from lost treasure in Utah is by writing books about it.

  2. This is an interesting addition to my collection of books on the old mines of Utah. It rehashes many previously told stories but with a different angle on some. It helped me find a couple of trails I hadn't pinned down so I found it useful. Good writing.

  3. Stephen B. Shaffer is an amazing man on an amazing quest for knowledge. If you've read his previous works, and have an open mind, then you know what I'm talking about. I really enjoyed this book. Many tales of adventure and treasure, both lost and found. This book, though definately entertaining enough, does not shed a whole lot of new light on old gold. For the casual treasure hunter, it does offer some direction, but for the technical fanatic, you will find that Stephen stops short of disclosing the details.

1 comments about Early American Copper, Tin and Brass: Hand-Crafted Metalware from Colonial Times (Henry Kauffman Collection) (Henry Kauffman Collection).

  1. Unfortunately, the author knows more than your average expert. When you correct someone and tell them it is a cramped joint not a dovetailed joint down the side of that pot, it's rough when he can site books considered tops in the field stating the contrary. Still the items shown are unique, the content informative and I am glad to have this book in my collection.

1 comments about /Collecting by Design: Silver and Metalwork of the Twentieth Century from the Margo Grant Walsh Collection (Houston Museum of Fine Arts).

  1. The book was edited in connection with "Collecting by Design" Metalwork from the Margo Grant Walsh Collection. An Exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, March 15 to August 3, 2008.
This exhibition features metalwork pieces designed by prominent architects from the 19th to the 21st century. The involvement of architects in decorative arts has its roots in the concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk, a term generally attributed to Richard Wagner, who saw his operas as an integral artwork of music, theatre and visual art.
The book is illustrated with hundreds of images of 20th century silver.
A must for everyone interested to the matter.
A wide article about this exhibition written by Dorothea Burstyn, the President of Silver Society of Canada, is available in ASCAS website at [...]
