4 comments about Toby & Character Jugs of the 20th Century and Their Makers.
- What a marvelous reference tool "Toby & Character Jugs of the 20th Century and Their Makers Is"! The dazzling photos and quality information make this book a "must-have" for all Toby collectors! Indeed, I discovered that I had actually purchased a FAKE Doulton. When I returned the jug to a local antiques store, I took along my Toby reference book. No questions were asked as for the return. In fact, the owner quickly wrote down info about the book in order to purchase one for herself.
- I have always been fascinated by toby mugs and jugs, but could not find the right source of information. This is one of the best reference books ever. I use it daily to help identify toby and character mugs and jugs. I was very lucky to get an advanced copy of it's companion price guide. The combination of the two has proved to be very useful. I would recommend these two publications highly!
- This is a fabulous book for the toby and character jug collector. The photo quality is exceptional (although some jugs are fairly small in the photos) and the organization is alphabetical by manufacturer. The information contained in the book is extensive. A wonderful reference source.
- When this artfully compiled book was handed to me for inspection, my first thought upon viewing it was "Wow! I wish all reference books were this thorough!"
They're not kidding when they say "Busting with Color." It also has tables with prices, edition numbers, and the item's history. I learned more about Toby and Character Jugs that I ever thought I knew! I plan to spend hours in the American Toby Jug Museum first chance I get! And the second, and the third, and ... Great book. Wonderful.

3 comments about Pueblo Pottery Families: Acoma, Cochiti, Hopi, Isleta, Jemez, Laguna, Nambe, Picuris, Pojoaque, San Ildefonso, San Juan, Santa Clara, Santo Domingo, Taos, Tesuque, Zia, Zuni.
- The book provided insight into the relationships of the potters on the different pueblos. We like the book. It is inexpensive. We will have it available when we visit the different pueblos.
- Unfortunately, this book promises a lot more than it delivers. For example, in its preface, it mentions several families of potters at Acoma named Lewis not related to Lucy Lewis, but they are not even mentioned. Even the section on the family of Lucy Lewis is barely 2 pages. The author for the most part barely skims the surface. I desperately wanted to like this book, but the more I read it, the more I saw was lacking. For one thing, it seriously needed a much better editor. It reads like a grade school student's social studies report, and it is filled with typos, the worst being that many of the photo captions are wrong because the photos were flipped and the captions were not corrected. A major disappointment for the price. Fortunately I bought it in paperback! It did have some good information, but it could have and should have had much more.
- This book is an excellent resource if you are interested in collecting pottery from all peublos as well as a variety of families. Although not quite as in depth as Rick Dillingmham's Fourteen Families, she does mention many families that he does not.

1 comments about Roseville Pottery: Warman's Companion (Warman's Companion: Roseville Pottery).
- Looks like they took the larger Warman's (2004)(which I have and like a little) and republished much of the same info in a smaller version. I was expecting a significant addition of material. If you need Roseville books: Bassett's Introducing (2001), Bassett's Understanding (2002), Bassett's Prices (2005), Jack and Nancy Bomm - Roseville in all its Splendor (2004). Bassett's prices are close to reality. The Warman's (2004) book has some prices that are low and some that are right on. Many of Huxford's (2001) prices seem to be way too high. If you get the 3 Bassett books and the Bomm book, you have a good core set to use.
UPDATE: The New MOLLRING book, "Roseville Pottery" 11th Ed., copyright 2006, is really good for collectors. Cons: Black and White Pictures. Pros: Updated Prices, concise reference, very comprehensive. A must have book for Roseville collectors. Dave.

5 comments about Franciscan: An American Dinnerware Tradition.
- My Father was the last Dinnerware Plant Manager for Franciscan China while it was still made in California. This book included alot of Franciscan China that is usually left out. I recommeded this book to my Father, who bought it and loved it too.
- Excellent material, but I wish the colors were more vivid and true to the real colors of the pottery. I recommend the book because it has a wealth of information for anyone who enjoys learning about all the patterns and their history. It would be a wonderful addition to the library of a collector or anyone interested in California pottery.
- Great resource. If you're a collector, BUY THIS BOOK. The pricing guide is an amazing reference for rare and uncommon pieces.
- The book is well written and I've learned quite a bit. However, I don't like that there isn't a photo of every piece (like the child's plate) or how to tell the difference between a casserole and a covered vegetable. I also didn't like that the price guide doesn't break down the year the item was made, just prices of American made, and made in England. Is one made in 1941 worth more than one in 1980??? The book and the guide doesn't say. I also felt as though it was CLEARLY written from a SALES perspective, complete with a photo of The Replacements headquarters on the back cover!
- This is probably the best book on Franciscan dinnerware around. It gives a lot of information on the company, it's history etc. I would have liked to see more information and photos on the handpainted items, namely the Apple and Desert Rose varieties. There are only a few pages devoted exclusively to them. There is a price guide included that covers most of the items, although it doesn't show photos of each piece. I think it's a pretty good book though and I'm glad I bought it.

5 comments about Quimper Pottery: A Guide to Origins, Styles, and Values.
- A wonderful commpilation of the Quimper pottery family. It was a gift for my friend who is a Quimper collector. She loved it!
- This book is a comprehensive and well-organized guide to Quimper Pottery -suitable for the serious collector as well as the beginner. The text is authoritative and readable, with an excellent index for ready reference. It is well-illustrated with color photographs which are instructive as well as beautiful. A glossary of terms, a time-line illustrating the development of Quimper faience, chapters on the artists as well as the manufacturers (and their marks)of Quimper, and a guide to factors affecting the value of pieces, are particularly useful. Highly recommended.
- As a more recent collector of Quimper I needed to purchase a good guide on the earlier and more expensive wares. I found the history of the origins, styles and values most interesting and useful. The book was well illustrated covering the various styles and the all important section on the Factory Marks complemented the volume at the end.
- The History of the people andpottery of Provenc includes much pottery of the region, but particularly the development of Quimper. The pictures are lovely and the values listed are valid.
- My wife was thrilled to receive this delightful book for a Christmas present.
She finds it informative, entertaining and very well illustrated.
The price is very good value for such a book.

4 comments about Price Guide to Holt-Howard Collectibles: And Related Ceramicwares of the '50s & '60s.
- I ordered the book and generally liked it, but was disappointed it does NOT include all the Christmas items HH made and that this is a small section of the book.. :0
- if you are looking for information on Holt Howard collectibles, this is the book for you. I has lots of color pictures and descriptions with specifics.
- This is one of the best books on Figural Kitchenware of the 50's and 60's that I have seen so far. Not only great pictures, but the best information about Holt Howard Collectibles as well as nock offs. I have used my copy more than any other reference book I own on Kitchenware. Walter Dworkin can't put out another soon enough. Can't wait!
- Highly recommend this book not only for the detailed description but also for the great color photos. Most price guides have alot of descriptions but not many photos, not this one! I enjoyed reading the description and seeing a photo. A must have for any collector
