5 comments about Roseville In All Its Splendor.

  1. Isn't that great? The Author (see below) will make improvments and release a "better" version, thanks to Amazon customers who have already wasted their money on this one. What a great life, eh? And, she gives her own book (which she vows to improve) a 5 Star rating--brutal! I guess the "improved" book will be worth 10 Stars to her!

  2. As author of the book, I thank everyone for their kind response. I am sorry that some of the pictures are not real clear but you must remember that these company plates were salesman sample pages some from the late 1900's. The newest pictures are from 1954. Since the book has been selling for six years now and has sold over 20,000 copy someone must be satisfied with the book. Watch for our new Roseville book coming out by the end of the year. It will be a collectors size book with all the pictures and prices plus place for all your information.

  3. Somewhat better organized than the other Roseville books, however, the quality of the photos are horrible. Looks like they scanned low resolution images from a catalogs. A lot of incomplete model numbers in the pictures. If you buy this book you need to buy another Roseville book as a companion so that you can validate the information. I doubt the author is actually a collector.

  4. This is much better organized than the other Roseville books, and very comprehensive. However, the quality of the photos is much worse since most are pictures of catalog photos. And many have incomplete model numbers in the pictures. Too bad!

  5. The Bomms' have amassed the finest single historical description of Roseville's output ever compiled, period. Several other people have produced excellent books but none as complete as Bomm's. They managed to access and photograph a nearly complete collection of Rosevile's catalogue pages which, if not pretty, definitively reveal the item number (get a magnifying glass) of each displayed piece.

I don't vouch for prices quoted, but the information is irreplaceable.

3 comments about Yixing Pottery: The World of Chinese Tea Culture (Arts of China).

  1. This book is best for collectors and those seeking visual reference material. Filled with many lovely images covering a variety of time periods and styles of yixing teapots. lovely.

  2. This book was not what I'd hoped for - which is a solid introduction to Yixing teapots. It concentrates on the history of Yixing teapots - and those that have been found in archaeological digs dating back to the Song Dynasty in China. Many of these ancient pots are illustrated in the book. There is some discussion on the qualities that make Yixing clay different from most other types of clay, but there is also much missing. The book doesn't illustrate examples of the differing colours available in the clay and never discusses famous clay types like Zhu Ni, which is so highly sought after by Yixing collectors.

There is a fairly large section on ancient masters of the art and those of the 19th and early 20th centuries. It's just a shame that their chops or signatures - which are usually recorded on their pots are not included in the text. Also missing is information on the modern state of the Yixing industry and the mechanical way modern pots are mostly made.

This is a rather basic and superficial look at Yixing pots and wares - but if you are after some biographical information on the most famous past masters or want to see illustrations on some very ancient Yixing pots then this book will be of interest to you.

  3. This is a fairly little book that is packed with solid info and great pictures. I bought one for me and a second as a gift. I may have to get a couple more for other tea fans.

4 comments about Deruta: A Tradition of Italian Ceramics.

  1. This book provides a look at the history of Italian Majolica. I enjoyed looked at both past and present examples of the beautiful work of so many talented artisans. I would highly recommend this book to both new and current lovers of majolica. I would also rocommend visiting patriziaimports.com..they have a beautiful selection of items!

  2. I puchased this book for my wife who brought home some pottery when she was in Umbria. I was hoping for a book that had a lot of pictures of the different kinds of Deruta pottery. This book was a history of the pottery from 1200-present. Although it was not what I thought, it was still very informative and enjoyable. I would recommend to anyone who wants to find out the history of this beautiful Italian pottery

  3. This is a beautiful book! I highly recommend it to anyone enchanted by Italian majolica and interested in it's history. After I read it, I thought I'd leave it on my coffee table for easy reference...but so many people at work have asked to borrow it! Even as I rode the train to work with the book in my lap, people next to me couldn't resist staring at the pictures and commenting on its beauty.

  4. This book is an excellent source of study, for the ones who want to know a little bit of the history of Deruta and its pottery tradition. For artists, it provides some wonderful pictures of many kinds of pottery in bright colours. The publishing quality is also very good.

1 comments about Parlor Cats: A Victorian Celebration.

  1. This has to be the most eye appealing book for anyone who loves cats, especially if the cat lover is also into antiques. The antique "scrap" images are so numerous and varied that everytime you look at this book you find things you missed the time before. The design is very decorative and colorful and is a beautiful coffee table book. I recommend it highly!

4 comments about Abingdon Pottery Artware 1934-1950: Stepchild of the Great Depression.

  1. This book is fantastic! The information is very helpful and the pictures are some of the best I have seen in any collectors book! This book has given me the knowledge to amass a 600+ piece of Abingdon Pottery!
(P.S. Joe and Joyce Paradis have also written a book about the early days of Haeger Pottery that is equally as good as the Abingdon Book! I highly recommed both books!)

  2. As an avid pottery collector, I have an ever growing collection of Pottery Collector's Guides. Abingdon Pottery Artware is one I refer to over and over again. Clear pictures of marks, stamps, labels and bottoms and an extensive price guide organized by mold number and alphabetized by mold type making identification a snap. This guide is filled with color pictures that I have found to be true to life glaze colors, each picture also includes mold numbers and production dates. One of my top 3 favorite collector's guides!

  3. Abingdon pottery is one of the hidden treasures of the Midwest that Joe Paradis has now shared with the rest of the world. I found the book after I had acquired a few pieces. It explains the unique quality of the product, such as the weight and the gloss. Paradis includes cross-referenced lists by item name and stock number. It is very comprehensive, readable, and the photography is excellent.

  4. Abingdon Pottery has been a little know piece of Americana until Joe Paradis and his outstanding book came along. Paradis covers the history of the pottery works, from the days of sanitary fixture making to the Depression when Art Pottery was made. Also discussed are the unique features of the actual pottery with excellent illustrations and interviews with the surviving members of the Depression Era staff. This book is a must for both collectors of Abingdon Pottery and those interested in American pottery in general.
