5 comments about Beatrix Potter Collectibles: The Peter Rabbit Story Characters.

  1. Especially for those who are passionate about Beatrix Potter. Sewall and Dubay do an excellent job in showcasing items often overlooked in other price guides. This is not to imply this book is simly a price guide. It is much more - a true delight!

  2. Charming book documents Beswick, Royal Doulton, Royal Albert, Wedgwood, Crummles, Eden Plush, Giants, Pull Toys, Musical Toys Hand Puppets, Beanie Babies, etc., Schmid Music Boxes, Anri, Border Fine Arts Figurines, Steiff, Tins, R. John Wright, etc. by author Debby DuBay, foreword by Potter expert Judy Taylor, highlighting Kara and John Sewall's private collection. Fabulous colored photographs with complete descriptions and a value under each. This price guide is easy to read and the only one I could find on general B. Potter collectibles. Highly recommend this lovely yet inexpensive book.

  3. Collecting is wonderful and documenting a collection is an honor that Ms. Dubay has bestowed on her friends the Sewall's. There are many books on the market that go into Ms. Potter's life like expert Judy Taylor who wrote the foreword for this book! As a novice collector, of many porcelain pieces, this is the first book I could find that has the values and is actually a useful price guide for the diverse Potter collector. I highly recommend.

  4. This charming book opens with Debby DuBay chatting away on how she met the Miss Potter and collector of today - Kara Sewall. I love this book and highly recommend it to all collectors, Peter Rabbit and Potter fans. Thanks to Debby DuBay for another charming book; she has a unique way of inviting us into her life and the lives of her friends and then getting us addicted to whatever the subject is that she is documenting. I am now a Limoges and Potter collector.

  5. I have collected Beatrix Potter for many years and finally a price guide is available on many of the pieces I have collected. I highly recommend this book to collectors of Beatrix Potter memorabilia from Wedgwood, Crummles, Schmid Music Boxes, etc., from the 1970s to today. LOVE this price guide!

1 comments about The Arts of Fire: Islamic Influences on Glass and Ceramics of the Italian Renaissance (Getty Trust Publications: J. Paul Getty Museum).

  1. Compiled and deftly edited by Catherine Hess (Associate Curator of Sculpture, Getty Museum), The Arts Of Fire: Islamic Influences On Glass And Ceramics Of The Italian Renaissance is informationally enhanced by the contributions of George Saliba (Professor of Arabic and Islamic Science, Columbia University) and Linda Komaroff (curator of Islamic Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art). Graced with a map, 61 color images and 17 b/w illustrations, The Arts Of Fire showcases luxury glass and ceramic objects made by Italian artists and craftsmen during the 15th and 16th centuries -- an era considered to be a high point in Renaissance art. What's less well known is that none of these wonderful creations would have been possible without the introduction of the technological and formal advances in the art and production of glass and ceramic ware imported into Italy from contacts within the Islamic East where they were originally developed and practiced. Also available in a hardcover edition (0892367571, $65.00), The Arts Of Fire is a superb and enthusiastically recommended addition to personal, professional, and academic Art History reference collections, The Arts Of Fire is a joy to simply page through and will leave the reader wondering what other treasures the Getty Museum has within its collections.

5 comments about The Collector's Encyclopedia of Homer Laughlin China: Reference and Value Guide.

  1. I bought this book quite a while ago. At that time, this was about the only book on the HOMER LAUGHLIN subject.

It all started when I had inherited a beautiful set of Homer Laughlin "Georgian" fine china, and I wanted to know more (& get more pieces). Unfortunately, fifteen+ years ago, there weren't too many H.L. china collectors and/or identification books on this subject, (aside from the avid FIESTA WARE collectors).

Needless to say, I never did find more pieces to my H.L. china set, since the H.L. Georgian pattern had sooooo many various flower styles (ie: since the early production of the 1940's Georgian pattern).

However, the thing that I did find most helpful from this book was that it gave a nice history of the company. I was very excited to get any information on the early history of this china company.

But as far as finding a H.L. book with all the patterns and styles, that never came about. Even the later re-prints of this book did not have all the flower styles of many of the H.L. fine china patterns.

(By the way, REPLACEMENTS INC, has no early H.L. chinas either. Thus, the older pieces are definetly hard to find).

Anyhow,if you are interested in a Homer Laughlin book that gives a nice history of the company, then you might find this book helpful.

But if you have inherited a specific early H.L. china pattern, as I did, then you may be out of luck in finding more information about it.
The reason being, is that H.L. changed their flower patterns so often and also it really depended upon the store that carried the H.L. fine chinas. (FIESTA was a different story though, since FIESTA was issued for many years. And plus, there are so many other books specific to just FIESTA, that this book only touches on the FIESTA subject, but mainly focuses on H.L's history and various other H.L. china patterns).

  2. After my aunt's demise several years ago, I was the recipient of some odd pieces of old china. I wondered as to the age of the pieces, and so I went to the Internet. What do you think I found. You're right, my china was listed in the book that I purchased through Amazon.com.
    Thank you very much.

  3. DISAPPOINTED THAT THE BOOK DID NOT GO BACK TO THE EARLY HOMER LAUGHLIN. LITTLE INFO ABOUT VARIOUS MARKS. NOT COMPLETE ENOUGH FOR THE PRICE.

  4. I recently aquired some Homer Laughlin china and was unable to identify the patterns. This book helped me tremendously! The pictures and descriptions were very useful. Also, there is alot of trivia about the company and some of the designers. I highly recommend this book.

  5. This is a very well organized reference for those collectors of Homer Laughlin who enjoy the "other" HL pottery (other than Fiesta, of course). Jasper has put a great deal of effort into categorizing the various patterns, and includes hundreds of photos. Each pattern has a little history that goes with it, and often the backstamp (mark) will be shown alongside. She includes an extensive history of the pottery, discusses the difficulties in identifying certain patterns, and includes pages from some of the old catalogs. All in all an admirable work and well worth the purchase price.

1 comments about Faberge at Hillwood.

  1. This book is a must to anyone interested in Faberge art. The book is written by the chief curator at Hillwood, which is the Washington, D.C. residence of the late Marjorie Merriweather Post, cereal heiress, collector, and philanthropist. There are 53 exquisite color photos in 80 pages of text. Some photos are extreme close up of intricate detailed artworks. Mrs. Post owns two imperial Easter eggs which are also featured in this book along with elaborate boxes, silver tea service, clocks, and notebook covers. Ann Odom knows her subject well with background information and family history. This book is well worth having in your collection.

  1. This beautiful book inspired me to gather and organize decades of greeting cards at various locations in my
house, perhaps for a collectible scrapbooking project or for art ideas.

  2. This is the most complete book on Valentines Day I have seen. Filled with interesting facts, over 200 (not 20) vintage Valentines, the history of Valentines Day, fun crafts for kids, recipes andmore. A must have book. AAAA+++++++

  3. Greetings With Love: The Book Of Valentines will hold year-round attraction for any interested in greeting card art, collectability, or history. The focus here is on antique valentines, with chapters surveying the earliest valentine in history to modern times. Over 20 vintage valentines from mechanical cupids to lace productions are detailed in a history which traces the changing trends of the day. Beautiful color photos of antique productions make for a bright, highly recommended coverage.

3 comments about R. S. Prussia Popular Lines: Identification and Value Guide.

  1. My interest in R.S. Prussia porcelain was kindled recently by researching a chocolate pot that had belonged to my great aunt, leading to my discovery of Mary Frank Gaston's scholarly and fascinating first and second books on the subject, now out of print. Regrettably, I have been unable to locate a copy of her Third Series book. But I was hooked--and a quick perusal of "Popular Lines" immediately compelled me to purchase this volume. I have been amply rewarded. Historical material from the earlier books has been carried forward and updated, along with indispensable information on mold and pattern identification and an educational chapter on fakes, repairs, and reproductions. Estimated values are helpfully provided in the caption for each illustration. Not only does this beautifully illustrated volume supplement Gaston's earlier books, but it serves quite admirably as a stand-alone reference for the novice. A highly enjoyable, key feature of this edition is the grouping of illustrations by decoration, such that one can view, all in one place, a variety of different items that are similarly decorated. A cautionary note: this volume concentrates solely on R.S. Prussia, so that E.S. and other allied marks illustrated in the earlier books are omitted here. The serious student of R.S. Prussia might want to acquire the entire series of Gaston books. In summary, this handsome and informative reference work on R.S. Prussia porcelain serves as an excellent distillation of, and supplement to, its predecessors.

  2. This book provides lots of great color pictures, not only of R.S. Prussia items but of the marks. It also has a section on reproductions. This is a very well done resource.

  3. If you don't have Gaston's Vol 1-3 (now out of print), this is a must buy. Sadly, it is limited to Reinhold's red mark items (both marked and unmarked)and contains no new molds or decorations. A change of format for a Gaston book as items are divided by decoration rather then type of object. Values are with each photo, a nice change! For the experiences collector there is nothing new, but if you don't have the first three books by Gaston, you will find much to appreciate in this volume. Avid "red mark" collectors will enjoy having so much, all in one source.
