5 comments about The Secret Lives of Men and Women: A PostSecret Book.

  1. Excellent book - its just fascinating what people put out there for others to read!

  2. I enjoyed the range of emotions the pages and pictures brought out. It was interesting to see so many share without worry. It makes you know you aren't alone in some of your thoughts. Very unique and artistic.

  3. I think this one is a little less art, a little more content since Warren knew the secrets were a success (and people cared less for the artistic value of the postcard itself). The postcards are presented in ways that are easier to read than in the first postsecret book (I have not read the second book). The pages are also used more efficiently than in the first book. This book's secrets run more on the darker side. I felt a lot more sad reading this one than the first one. I don't think there was but one funny "secret." All I can say is that I hope the people sending these in are being genuine because I'd feel like a chump if they weren't.

  4. ive been a follower for the postsecret project for a while now and i love the books that theyve produced with some never-before-seen secrets in there.

  5. Is there anyone left on earth who doesn't know about these books, the blog, or the website? If so, where have you been? Out of all the coffee table books I've read in the past, the PostSecret series is the very best of the best. I haven't viewed all of them, but will. That's a promise.

THE SECRET LIVES OF MEN AND WOMEN is probably the least favorite of the book thus far. Maybe because it was so thin compared to the other two.

  1. This is the typical OBEY stuff: nice design and very good edition, nice paper etc, just like the other red book from Obey.
Is focused on a show he did some time ago and contains mainly pics from that canvases, some street art he did for promo and pics from the opening.
So, if you like the Obey stuff, you'll like this one. But if this is your first book from Obey, you can get almost for the same price "Obey: Supply & Demand : The Art of Shepard Fairey" with older designs but with much more content, history etc.

  2. This is a book in which you can actually have some pretty good discussions about. The artwork is controversial in nature which I can appreciate. Looked at it with a group of friends and each of us had a different response, but all enjoyed the book. Also the book is well made and should last for years.

5 comments about Masters: Art Quilts: Major Works by Leading Artists (The Masters).

  1. As reviewed in Melisse Laing's "Stitches & Stuff" column in The Daily News, Longview, WA on August 26, 2008:
"Masters: Art Quilts" by Martha Sielman is a collection of the works of 41 artists who are working today as art quilters. Many are well known - Jane Sassaman, Hollis Chatelain, Yvonne Porcella, Caryl Bryer Fallert, to name a few.
Others you will enjoy getting to know as you read brief biographies and comments from the artists and see color photographs of their works.

  2. Masters: Art Quilts from Lark Books is a sumptuous visual feast for quilters and non-quilters alike. The gorgeous work featured is innovative and inspiring, and the profiles of each of the 40 featured quilters adds enormous depth to the entire presentation. This beautiful coffee-table release deserves a place of honor in your living room. Don't miss out! I'm also very excited about another release in Lark's groundbreaking Masters series: Masters: Beadweaving Masters: Beadweaving: Major Works by Leading Artists (The Masters), curated by eminent beadweaver Carol Wilcox Wells.

  3. This book is one of the best I have seen on contemporary quilt making. Martha Sielman chose the creme de la creme of the quilting world to include in the book- an arduous and difficult task I think! This is a book that you will look at again & again and always find something new. Fabulous! Well done! A must have for any contemporary quilter's library. Also, I think, a "must have" for libraries....come to think of it !

  4. "Masters: Art Quilts" is one of the most fantastic books I've ever seen; incredible photo imaging, wonderful commentaries about the artists, and the book is beautifully organized. "Masters" is inspirational - think of it as artistic "eye candy",,,,,, I'll treasure it forever ! Congratulations to Studio Art Quilts Associates (S.A.Q.A.) executive director, Martha Sielman, for providing all of us with such an outstanding book ! Kathy Harte, From the Harte Design Studio, Anchorage, Alaska

  5. an amazing inspirational book that inspirers and leads quilters on to bigger and better quilts. The photos of the Masters quilts are breathtaking . I just love owning this book . glance at it every day

2 comments about The $12 Million Stuffed Shark: The Curious Economics of Contemporary Art.

  1. I'm more of a business and economics book reader than professed art reader and this book scratched that itch while adding something new and refreshing to my usual selections that kept me reading "just a few more pages".

Thompson does a great job of getting behind how these Goliaths of art like Hirst and Bacon were created and issues of valuation and branding that are easy to ignore in the "magic" of art. I found myself reading it on the subway and after work whenever I had a second and I finished it in a couple days, which is pretty fast for me.

Thompson never loses sight of the assumed intangibility of art--the inherent subjectivity--but encases it in economics in the same way vein as Freakonomics, and I've definitely finished this book with a few cocktail quotes and points that I've brought up in conversations.

This is a great read that I can recommend to business, economics, and art readers. Thompson walks the fine line of these areas to write a book that will engage them all.

  2. An excellent overview of the internal convoluted workings of the contemporary international art market. If you want to know what now goes into the pricing and marketing of big-time works of art, buy this book.

In the spirit of "Freakonomics", Don Thompson trains his economist's eye on the financial side of the current world of high-end art. Happily his book is written in a fashion to be understood, rather than as an academic exercise to befuddle.

Those seeking a recent book by a passionate collector of contemporary art may also wish to read Giuseppe Panza's "Memories of a Collector."

5 comments about The Illusion of Life: Disney Animation.

  1. Excellent book

This excellent book is a manual of animation.
Everything about animation you can find on it.

  2. Anyone who loves Disney animation and anyone who is learning the process of animation needs to get their hands on this book. It is long, it is detailed, but it is well worth it. This book mainly covers the essential Principles of Animation such as Squash and Stretch, Anticipation, Follow Through, etc. Go get it!

  3. This is a really inspirational book! It takes you through the history of Disney animation and how the founding animators discovered their secrets and modeled their craft. You will learn all about the fundamentals of great animation and how to apply proven techniques to form your skill. It is easy to read and is full of great imagery and references. Highly recommended!

  4. Wow!..First of all, the presentation of the book is amazing. The cover, the paper, everything. And wen you open the book, is simply what you need for start to see animation as an art...no, in my case, an "excuse" for use a software (I sarting to go to 3d animation). Buy this book!

  5. The love produces animation! That book exhibition that! That amazes of book! That fantastic thing is the friendship and the production of those two geniuses of the animation! The life and the those two men's art is a thing that contemplates in all us, impassioned by animation. They are my life examples, and one day I would like cannot at least to arrive close to what did. That book, and the dvd about the life of the two, is obligatory things in any school, or shelf peculiar of any person that has feelings and sensibility to understand the beautiful things of the life. Wonderful? Spectacular? Grandiose? I don't have as defining that book. He is more than any definition that somebody can create. It is the love transformed in cartoons overflowing for the pages of that wonderful book. I will buy more a, to be in the shelf without nobody opens it, and my descendants only can you make it for they know a time and such some brilliant people and magics as these highlighted in that spectacular book.

5 comments about The Photographer's Eye.

  1. This book is instructive by way of example. It has not a lot of text but many interesting photographs in categories. The categories reflect the photographic or artistic value of the chapter.

  2. This book is a collection of photographs from the MOMA collection, nothing more. For those (like me) who were expecting insights, comments, knowledge, this is not the book. It's dissapointing.

  3. I was expecting a book of photographs with accompanying essays on their artistic merit. According to the write up and the first review. I received the book only to find its a collection of mainly classic photographs but mainly well-known photographers, with virtaually no notes, this was quite disappointing. I might also add there are better compilation type photography books on the market.

  4. Once it's not a deep study about B&W pictures - only an abridge of a few very known photos - it is very smart to have in your photography' shelf(ves), but not A MUST to have it.
Definely it's a very good work material for professionals/teachers because there is no explanations why the picture became famous, so, beginners just will fall in love about them by intuition, leaving the technical aspects to be explained/understood later.
Could be 4 stars if it'd more pictures.

  5. I like collections of photos by many different artists, and this book has a good number of diverse pre-1970 photos to browse. There is a minimum of text and that is fine with me. The book's main contribution is that it suggests a means of systematizing photography, by frame, subject, time, details and other aspects, and as such provides a compelling jumping off point from which the aspiring photographer can learn the art of photography. Good value for the money as well.

5 comments about Calder Jewelry.

  1. This book is a beautiful celebration of Calder's gorgeous and playful jewelry. The pictures are lovely and the jewelry itself is simply amazing. It's hard not to feel joyful flipping through these pages. Buy it and enjoy!

  2. This book is an inspiration to anyone who makes jewelry. The use of cold connections is terrific and can show you what can be done without the use of solder.

  3. Merely walking by this book makes my artisan heart tingle. The genius, the simplicity and golden aura of beauty makes this book a "must own." The photographs are gorgeous and the descriptions beautifully written. Get inspired.

  4. Anyone who appreciates well-made, original design in jewelry needs to have and read this book. What an inspiration! Although I was familiar with Calder's mobiles, for which he is most renowned, I was even more impressed with his jewelry designs. All one-of-a-kind. A definite must for the coffee table or even to read and enjoy. As a jewelry designer influenced by other cultures, this has been most helpful in inspiring me to follow my instincts and to design the items I've seen in my dreams. What a book!

  5. Expertly photographed, beautifully styled catalog of A. Calder's jewelry. A great purchase, no regrets.
