1 comments about A Book of Five Swords and a Scroll.
- I was given a copy of the book by the author which I reviewed. Although the book is advertised as a "Paperback," it is an 8.5 x 11 inch soft cover book of 144 pages. It contains many photographs, maps and diagrams to provide the history of the Japanese swords, and the five swords that are the topic of the book. The author added a chapter on M/Sgt R. M. June, USMC, taken prisoner on Wake Island when that island fell to the Japanese on December 23, 1942. The author also includes a chapter care and cleaning of Japanese swords and an appendix.
The photos and graphics make this book a worthwhile addition the library of anyone interested in Japanese history, Japanese swords, and the chapter on M/Sgt. June.

2 comments about Uniforms of the French Revolutionary Wars 1789-1802.
- Haythornthwaite provides background to the French Revolutionary Wars followed by 62 pages of color illustrations keyed to 44 pages of text descriptions.A nicely illustrated look at the men who composed the French Army and the Allies, their weapons and equipment, and their tactics in combat. Six appendices provide further information on French and Prussian uniforms. New to this edition is an extended bibliography.Useful appendices, a bibliography, glossary, and index round out this book
- This book covers the uniforms as they transitioned from Frederican to the better-known Napoleonic Glory Years. These are the soldiers that forged Gen. Bonaparte's reputation in Northern Italy. Some obscure entries, too, for those miniature collectors looking, say, for a dromedary corps! Good buy!!

3 comments about German Military Collectibles Price Guide: Collector Items of Historical Interest from Imperial Germany and the Third Reich.
- This book is so out of date it isn't even funny. Save your money and buy a real book on German collecting from a reputiable writer. This book is a complete waste of time and money.
- Concise is being generous. Skip this book, Whitmans are the ones to buy.
- Published by the reknowned Manions' Auction Company, this small book is a concise price guide to german militeria. Included in the price guide is almost everything: books, helmets, medals, badges, uniforms, photos, identification books, posters etc.. Heavily illustrated with small photographs and concisely described, the items number in the thousands. Sadly, however, the prices listed are now almost seven years out of date. It is now rare for example, to find an original Second World War, Iron Cross First Class for only $85.00. A good supplemental reference work and a useful "floor" price reference, this book provides a good representation of items usually offered for sale on the open market. This book however,is by no means comprehensive. It should never be used to completely authenticate an item.

2 comments about Civil War Collector's Encyclopedia, Vol. 4: Military Memorabilia Used by Federals and Confederates, 1861-1865..
- I am a big fan of Dr. Lord. He certainly broke new ground when he first published his classic Civil War Collector's Encyclopedia (Vol. 1) which was considered the Bible in the field for years. While many of his other earlier works were just as good, his subsequent works of Civil War Collector's Encyclopedia Vols. 2-5 that he did in later years just kept declining, lacking the original research and text that made his first a classic, not to mention the quality of the memorabilia, as well as the authenticity of some of them. Check out some of his earlier works, you can't go wrong there, and don't pass on Vol. 1 in this series.
- This book and the 4 following volumes are a great addition to anyones library who is a collector, a historian, a reenactor (like myself) or just has a general intrest in the civil war. It has hundreds of items with photos and descriptions of items ranging from swords to sewing kits to pistols to uniforms. As a reenactor, it was very useful in finding modern items that can pass as civil war period.

1 comments about Occupied Japan for Collectors/1945-1952.
- Ths was the first book we bought about Occupied Japan. We were bran new collectors and found that we learned a great deal from this book. Now that we have been collected for some time we still use this as refernce for pricing items. The only prolbem I find with this book is that evertime I find an item I want to find a price for there is no price indicated in the price guide. Very frustrating. I would still recommend any collector owning this book it gives alot of very good information and anyone can learn alot from this. We do like it and would suggest every MIOJ collector own this book.

1 comments about American Flight Jackets, Airmen & Aircraft: A History of U.S. Flyers' Jackets from World War I to Desert Storm (Schiffer Military Aviation History).
- The reason I ordered this book is very simple: I'm an incurable nostalgic. Although I was born in a year (1960) not even close to the era from the great flight jackets, my interest has been growing since I started collecting memorabilia. (Books, magazines, newspapers, etc. from the period). As the owner of a (replica) A-2 jacket I decided I wanted to know more about them. This book has provided me with an excellent insight in the era and the men that wore the jackets. The sub-title promises a time span, roughly, from WWI to Desert Storm and although the emphasis is on WWII, the book delivers. Flight jacket buff and novice (like me) alike, this work takes you on a sentimental journey through the very interesting world of the American flight jacket. About one thousand pictures, most of them in colour and with great detail, show the flight jacket not just as a utilitarian garment but first and foremost as a means of expression and emotion. And that's why the authors shy away from quoting prices and don't talk about `market value'. Because some unscrupulous traders do not care about the intrinsic value but go for cold, hard cash, many jackets have been torn from their historical context and thus are lost. Not so in this book. Page after page of jackets, jacket art and the men who owned them. But not only leather jackets. Also all the other materials used in jackets are shown. (After the 50's, many jackets were made of other materials than leather). And some of the smaller details, like the lucky bells and the dinky whistles that some pilots used to hang from the collar hook of their jackets make even more interesting reading. The only thing I miss, is a summary of jacket manufacturers and some more technical details about the jackets themselves. Also, if you don't like reading a lot, this is a book for you. For all of you who are interested in a very special part of American heritage, or just want to know more about the flight jacket, this is required reading. To me: a must have.
