1 comments about Site Analysis: Linking Program and Concept in Land Planning and Design.

  1. As a first year Landscape Architecture student, this book was very helpful for clearly laying out the site analysis concepts. You can't beat the graphics as well.

Apparently, there is a new edition coming out, which might have been nice to wait for, but I needed it for a class. overall, a very good book.

  1. Really good book! The last chapter on modernism would have been great @ the beginning of the book. Although Drew posed no real solutions to our ruined physical environments, (she does write about the "New Urbanism")Drew's treatise gives us all pause to reflect on both how we live & what we have settled for when it comes to our housing and living choices (or lack there of.) Read this & get angry & active!

5 comments about Home Landscaping: Northeast Region: Including Southeast Canada (Home Landscaping) (Home Landscaping).

  1. I have so many landscaping books that I never opened again after the first week I bought them. This is not one of those books. It's by far so much better than most of the other ones out there. It's well organized for info, and the plans are numerous and easy to follow. Not just for beginners. a really great book!

  2. It's great the way these books are customized for each individual climate area here in the U.S. Saves a lot of wasted planning with the wrong plants and materials.

  3. I recently became interested in gardening (now that I have a yard in which I can plant). This is one of my favorite books on gardening and landscaping. Great resource for those of us living in the northeast. Full of wonderful photos, explanations and illustrations. It gives many ideas for addressing certain areas of your yard (i.e. front entryway, patio, rock wall). Explanations are excellent; I learned a great deal from this book. Very well written. Highly recommended.

  4. A neighbor showed me her copy and I had to get one for myself. Great layouts, great plant selections, this book offers great ideas and variations and is FULL of information! I showed another neighbor the garden I am planning and now I'm buying her a copy as well. We are going to have a GREAT looking street!!

  5. Home Landscaping: Northeast Region is a very informative book filled with beautiful photos. I don't think I will need another book while doing our landscape planning. Landscaping designs, expected sizes of plants and trees and shrubs, different colors and species, how to's, this book will cover all your landscaping needs if you live in new england.

5 comments about Plants of the Metroplex.

  1. This is a wonderful gardening guide for the DFW area. I highly recommend it. The ideas are aplenty and next to none should fail you. I love it.

  2. A great book in an easy to read format, good for quick reference and deeper study. Great pictures and info on locating local specimens to see how the plants look in a real setting.

  3. Impressive! This is the most comprehensive and informative plant guides for this part of Texas and anywhere else with a similar climate. The categories include: "Trees", "Shrubs", "Flowers", and "Groundcovers, Vines and Grasses". Many photos! The category "Trees" alone has over 150 photos! Soils vary quite a bit here, so this includes a lot of plants! It even names the plants and trees you DO NOT want to plant and gives the reasons why. The book illustrates the proper way to plant and has fantastic recommendations on how to manage various problems with pests, "weeds", etc. Highly recommended!

  4. I bought this along with Neil Sperry's Texas Gardenining. This is a simple book with excellent pictures for planting in the DFW area. I wouldn't recommend this book as guide/reference, but it is a very nice accessory for deciding what to plant.

  5. A must book for residents of the Dallas area. Has a good outline style with the high points on plants for Dallas. For a very detailed look this reference may come up short.

2 comments about Site Work & Landscape Cost Data (Means Site Work and Landscape Cost Data).

  1. This cost data is very useful for estimating the cost of demolition and remediation of plants and facilities sites. I believe it is the best information available at a reasonable price.

  2. The R.S. means Landscaping and Site Work, 2002 cost data guide can help and hurt. It is full of wonderful data and prices that are a general standard in the industry. It is not a guide though, for the beginner. I made the mistake of using the guide for estimating purposes. If used in this manner, you end up with an over-inflated bid. I now understand that this is just a reference guide and not an estimating tool. Overall it is packed with a wealth of information, but on the downside it takes some time to understand, and use properly.

2 comments about Turf Management for Golf Courses, 2nd Edition.

  1. I use this book at school for a class called "golf course organization and maintenace." It is geared directly to golf courses. The fact of the matter is that it covers every imaginable aspect of golf course maintenance and operations, and I do mean everything. In my opinion there is no other book more valuable for persons training to be golf course superintendents. If your already a superintendent I'm sure it would still be a wise decision to purchase this book.

  2. this book will heip even the greats turf managers around the world,

2 comments about X-Urbanism: Architecture and the American City.

  1. It is a rare moment when text and image collaborate to tell a story that could be told by neither alone. X-Urbanism is one of these moments. The dialog between the writing and drawings in this book is brilliant. The ultimate result of the conversation between the two is a nuanced understanding of the relationship that cities have with the subconscious of their inhabitants.

  2. Both eloquently and clearly, X-Urbanism explores the historical and continuing development of the American City through the lens of an eye opening thesis: fantasy and desire have been pivotal factors in the shaping of Urban Space. As the author illustrates, the implications of this point of departure reach far beyond the conventional boundaries of urban studies to include a wealth of other disciplines such as psychology, philosophy, and popular culture. Through the course of this book, the affects of fantasy on the Renaissance City, the Baroque City, the Modern City, and the Post-modern City are charted. Without being dogmatic or judgmental, Mr. Gandelsonas frames the City as a simultaneous object and subject that is influenced by the desires of architects while also influencing its inhabitants with its own wishes.

After reading the text and viewing the drawings that conclude this book it was as though I was walking around an object that until now I had only understood from a stationary position.

This book is a must read for anyone who lives inside or outside of a city.
