5 comments about Standard Catalog of World Coins, 1801-1900 (Standard Catalog of World Coins 19th Century Edition 1801-1900).
- If you collect Modern Foreign this book is a MUST HAVE, I have looked up 100 or more coins and have yet not to locate the coin I am looking for. It is comprehensive, has good pictures most of the Obverse and Reverse some just of the Obverse.
I highly recommend this book, its great.
David Jackson
- This is a book that every collector whose interests exceed his backyard and go beyond his birthdate must have at home. There is no better help to start expanding your collection beyond 1901.
There is no better does not mean that there cannot be a better one. Some remarks must be taken into consideration
- this is an American catalog so prices in your country (if you're not American that is) are most certainly different and there is no point to waste your time to prove Krause wrong. E.g. prices of German states' coins in Germany are 50 to 100% higher than in Krause. They are which means that if you are looking for them you move to eBay and look for them elsewhere but not in Germany. Foreign dealers treat Krause prices of foreign coins seriously.
- this is an American catalog which has a soft spot for American coins. Most foreign readers will be mildly amused by eighteen pages of remarkably uninspired designs of the US patterns (fortunately most of them are not shown) or twelve pages of "territorial gold".
- this is an American catalog so you may find some of coins from your country missing completely or missing a picture.
If you can accept all this, you will be happy with your purchase. If you can't, you should think if you won't be much happier with a more specific coin catalog but be sure that no other can give the kind of general view you find in this one.
- This publication is essential for anyone buying, selling or evaluating coins.
- This is the most comprehensive coin catalogue and when put together with Catalogue of World Coins 1901 - 2006, it really gives you an accurate picture and value report of what you have in your collection or are thinking about adding to it.
- Material is horribly dated. Publication date apparently 2004, using 2001-2003 price date. Effectively useless.
You MUST show date of publication in description of item.
Not likely to buy again.

5 comments about Bushido : Legacies of the Japanese Tattoo.
- A very interesting and colorful book. I enjoyed reading it and looking at all of the pictures. Lots of good info here. Lots of writing about Horiyoshi III, including photographs of his studio and museum. A great book.
- Recommended to me by a well known tattoo artist, this book truly gave me the nuts and bolts info I needed to make the big leap. Especially helpful
to me were the explanations of the different areas of the body that are typically tattooed w/their Japanese names. There was also a stunning picture of a gorgeous girl with a ray of butterflies tattooed in the body suit style. As the art evolves from a badge of the criminal class to pure art, I believe we will see more feminine interpretations
of this masculine art form. Excellent from text to pictures!
- I was in the process of researching Japanese tattoos for my own tattoo design and purchased four books. Bushido was the best for telling the story and history of Japanese tattooing and the pictures were equally amazing. Bushido was informative and pictures were beautifully shot. By far the best book on the subject I have seen.
- It's a cool book that shows us many curious aspects of the japan tattoo history and tradition.
But, in another way, there's a lack of variety of photos, like koi fish and masks for example.
- Horioshi work speaks for itself and this book is an impressive tribute to it. The pictures are fantastic and it's very nice to see that the family business has its heritage assured.

3 comments about Wayne Goddard's $50 Knife Shop, Revised.
- If you want to FORGE a knife this is the book for you....If you want to BUILD a knife===>There are others more suited for that
- Wayne's first version of this book was the first knifemaking book i purchased. Wayne has guided me and been my mentor and friend from the first (approx 4 yrs ). This latest version is one of the best books a beginner could get. All the fotos and diagrams are in color which greatly helps in understanding the lessons. It has new fotos and diagrams all in color. Although this book has approx same number of pages as the original, it seems to contain 50% more info in it. I would reccommend this book to all knifemakers...beginner and experienced. Definitely a 5 star book.
- I own both editions of this book. Wayne is a personal friend, and my mentor in knifemaking. It can be intimidating to read some publications and see all the high-tech machinery that some makers use. This book shows that people can develope their passion for making knives without spending a fortune. It is clear and concise, and takes alot of the guesswork out of being a beginner. Wayne learned knifemaking by trial and error, before there were books, magazines and videos on the subject. This book is a must have in the library of any knifemaker. I read mine constantly for reference and inspiration.

5 comments about Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms and Their Values.
- I have an old Flayderman's from the 1980s that has been a great source of information over the years on antique firearms. The sheer amount of information gathered in it is incredible and the latest edition is, believe it or not, even better! More information on many of the firearms and more entries makes this edition the best yet. Flayderman's in an invaluable resource for those interested in antique firearms and I highly recommend it!
- Ever since the first edition, Norm's book has been the standard reference for antique American firearms. No other reference comes close to the breadth of content. Unless someone takes over, this is likely to be the last edition as Norm is getting up there in years.
The index is still difficult to use as it has been since the first edition. It can be frustrating to locate information on a specific, less common, firearm. The prices listed for most items tend to be several years out of date.
- I have ll the previous books, I have been waiting for this to come out. A must have for anyone who collects antique gun's.
- As always, Flayderman presents the best in his guides. Well written and explanations are very accurate. A must for gun collectors and dealers.
- I have bought 5 prior editions of this book. It is the best antique firearms valuation tool out there and full of interesting information.

5 comments about Bedazzled: 5000 Years of Jewelry--The Walters Art Museum.
- This is the kind of book you need when looking for inspiration. The pictures are big, crisp, and splendid. Each one contains detailed information about the size, material, and date of the piece. The variety of the pieces shows the true passion of the musseum owner for jewelry.
- A tiny little reference book loaded with a lot of history. Shows photographs of gold pieces dating back to 2BC to the 19th and 20th Centuries, collected by Henry Walters, now on exhibit. Better than anything you'll see at any of the Egyptian exhibits touring about, and an up close look at specific pieces that defined the history of jewelry.
- I received the item on time and in wonderful condition but was very disappointed by the book itself. Its VERY small and all the 5000 years of jewelry was just from one private collector. I thought there would be more information and definitely more of a history. I would not recommend this book to anyone. But not the fault of Amazon :)
- This is a nice little book, and by little I mean 7 inches on a side square.
At 64 pages it holds a lot of high quality images with full page shots and many closeups.
The text is informative without being pompous and overly wordy like many historical jewelery books written by endlessly blabbery art historians trying to flex their hyper inflated vocabularies and fill their quota of space.
There is even a short glossary at the end with many useful terms for the novice jewelry historian.
Despite it's demure appearance this delightful book fulfills it's promise of an informative and detailed review of some of the highlights of the Walters Collection.
Buy this book for your library and you probably have a friend who would like it too, so maybe buy another for them.
- Bedazzled is a small book with high quality photos of distinct and beautiful pieces of jewellery held by the Walters Art Museum that covers prominent periods of jewellery design. I was very impressed as I have not seen these pieces in any other books on jewellery history. It is a gem don't be deceived by the size as it is well worth owning.

1 comments about Royal Jewels: From Charlemagne to the Romanovs.
- Compiled and co-edited by the team of art historian and fine jewelry historian Diana Scarisbrick, curator and specialist in royal European jewel collections Christophe Vachaudez and jewelry curator Jan Walgrave (who is also Honorary Director of the Diamond Museum in Antwer), "Royal Jewels: From Charlemagne To The Romanovs" surveys and showcases more than 800 years of jewelry associated with European monarchs. The informed and informative text is superbly enhanced with the inclusion of 290 full color and 25 black-and-white illustrations that include period paintings and photographs of bedecked royalty ranging from Louis XV, Napoleon, Empress Eugenie, Mary Queen of Scots, an Infanta of Spain, and members of the Medici family. Symbols of wealth, cultural status, and political power, jewels hung from necks and fingers, decorated clothing, enhanced the crowns of kings and the tiaras of queens. A beautiful book for browsing by the non-specialist general reader, "Royal Jewels" is a model of painstaking scholarship that makes it an impressive addition to academic and community library collections.

5 comments about Dangerous Liaisons: Fashion and Furniture in the Eighteenth Century (Metropolitan Museum of Art).
- This book contains some very nice images of historic costumes and furnishings from the 18th Century, including detail views. It should be of value to costume designers, set designers, historians and re-enactors. The quality of the book makes it a great bargain.
- An incredible array of beautiful photography with amazing detail. Along with the exquisite clothing, we're shown some wonderful pieces of furniture and how they both worked for or against you in society. Recommended for all interested in the 18th century, fashion history, and wonderful photography.
- This book is a great resource for the Rococo period. Seeing the actual garments on mannequins in situ is lovely. I also like the supporting portraits, prints and quotes.
- This is a fabulous insight into 18th Century French society. As a costume designer, I found the inclusion of paintings from that period, intermixed with the museum settings to be of particular interest. The close-up photographs of details were also wonderful. The text was fascinating and very enjoyable reading. It's very often tempting to take things out of context according to one's own interests. This publication opens up an intricately woven world where fashion and furniture play an equally important role in the mores of a society.
- When I'm looking for visual resourced books to help inspire my costuming I would have to say this one is one of my favorites on the shelf for 18th Century clothing.
I like to have books that have heaps of historical content to help construct my costumes but I also value the 'picture books' to help the creative/visual aspect of desgining costumes! This is one of those :)

5 comments about Vintage Rolex Sports Models: A Complete Visual Reference & Unauthorized History.
- This book only has old watches in and not all of them at that. Some details are incorrect.
However it is just a book on Rolex sports watches, but it has nothing new, the most modern watch it has is a 1975 GMT. So if you want to know something about Rolex wathes in the last 33 years, its not alot of good,
- This book is completely stated sports models and really can help user when buying a vintage Rolex!
- A most impressively comprehensive and finely detailed reference that will prove to be of great usefulness and interest to me when handling Rolex watches, and when talking to and advising collectors and enthusiasts.
- Pictures are of good quality. A good book to add to the collection, each watch has good description and on the watch movement.
It is a limited market, you have to remember its a book on the vintage watches and not modern Rolex watches.
Saying that I would not be without it, But I am a watch Nut.
- Great book for watch enhusiast. Although it only takes us up to 1997, so I was dispointed, The pictures are good, the history covers the basics. I would recommend to add to the collection

5 comments about The Arts of the Sailor: Knotting, Splicing and Ropework.
- I bought this for my son - he just purchased his first sailboat. He loved the info and that it is such a compact size - he can keep it on the boat for quick reference. Though not as complete as "The Ashley Book of Knots" it does cover the basics. Great for beginners!
- A generally informative book, but.....
some of the directions refer to diagrams with arrows showing the direction of the rope. No such arrows!
Overall fair to good diagrams and interesting history, but I think I would have bought a different book had I known what was missing.
- This book has some of the most clearly articulated and illustrated instructions I have ever encountered.
- A great book chock full of interesting ideas to make your boat more seamanlike. The definative rope working book.
- This is an excellent resource book and we will use it a lot....

5 comments about The Urban Treasure Hunter: A Practical Handbook for Beginners.
- I was hoping for a little more technical stuff with this book. It talks
about old buildings, privies, new construction sites, and etc. to look for
things. I wanted techniques in the handling of the detector. Not so much as
where to go. To me, it's a book about common sense. Overall, I would
recommend it. It is helpful in a few areas.
- No matter what your treasure, be it coins, bottles, or somethisg else, this book has great tips on where and how to find it. I originally bought a copy for my son and was so impressed that I bought another copy for myself.
- I am just beginning my hobby with a metal detector. I purchased several books on treasure hunting and this is by far the best. It has a broad range of extremely useful information. By all means start with this book if you too are a beginner. Most of the other books I bought had a lot of fluff. This book has a ton of useful information and guidance.
- This book is an invaluable resource for the beginner and even the intermediate detectorist. It has filled me with new ideas of where and how to search for lost valuables and coins. The tidbits on history and archeology were most interesting.
- This book has a lot of information about treasures all over the country. Tells you where to look, how to go about hunting and what equipment you need and what to do when you find your treasures.
