5 comments about The Urban Treasure Hunter: A Practical Handbook for Beginners.
- I have owned and used metal detectors since the early 80's and compared to a lot of books on the subject (that turn into adds for a particular detector manufacturer) I have found this book very useful and have picked up a few pointers and techniques
- I was hoping for a little more technical stuff with this book. It talks
about old buildings, privies, new construction sites, and etc. to look for
things. I wanted techniques in the handling of the detector. Not so much as
where to go. To me, it's a book about common sense. Overall, I would
recommend it. It is helpful in a few areas.
- No matter what your treasure, be it coins, bottles, or somethisg else, this book has great tips on where and how to find it. I originally bought a copy for my son and was so impressed that I bought another copy for myself.
- I am just beginning my hobby with a metal detector. I purchased several books on treasure hunting and this is by far the best. It has a broad range of extremely useful information. By all means start with this book if you too are a beginner. Most of the other books I bought had a lot of fluff. This book has a ton of useful information and guidance.
- This book is an invaluable resource for the beginner and even the intermediate detectorist. It has filled me with new ideas of where and how to search for lost valuables and coins. The tidbits on history and archeology were most interesting.

5 comments about The Complete Peanuts 1950-1954 Box Set.
- Great book, I was impressed by the artistry and its nice to see charlie brown in his early days.!!!
- I started reading the Peanuts when I was in elementary school, and followed the strip until its end. When it ended I hoped that Schultz's work would be compiled into a collection, and it was. When I hear Fantagraphics was going to publish all of the Peanuts strips I didn't give the collection much thought, with regard to the design, packaging, etc. I was just happy that there was going to be a collection!
When I recieve my order from Amazon, and first lifted the box that The Complete Peanuts 1950-1954 came in I was pleased to discover that the box was quite heavy. Why? The publisher didn't just throw the strips together in a cheap package. Fantagraphics gave the Peanuts the packaging and presentation it deserves. Two hard cover books...with wonderfully designed cover jackets...slips into a very sturdy box; I have the other 3 box sets and each box's design features a character and related artwork...its simply amazing and I couldn't ask for more. These books are going to last a long time, not to mention look great on a book shelf. I highly recommend this product and the other box sets as well. You can't beat the price Amazon is asking either. I was at Borders a while ago and they were asking $35 just for ONE book...not for the box set. Another thing to keep in mind...this endeavor by Fantagraphics is likely to be a one time deal, because it is so expensive to publish all of the strips.
Not too long ago, retailers sold out of the 1950-1954 box set, and it looked like they were not going to get anymore in. Fortunatley they did, but during this shortage the box set was selling for $250+ on eBay. So, buy it while you can...you won't regret it if you are a fan of the Peanuts...or a casual reader!
- I am in my mid-forties and am enjoying this wonderful journey back into my childhood. Although I caught Peanuts and Schultz in the 1960s, I still grew to have this huge spot in my heart for the world of Peanuts. As an adult (I think) now, I can also enjoy the strip for its sometimes unexpected, intimate peek into the life of Charles Schultz.
It is, therefore, with great joy that I started at the beginning, pre-Peanuts, when Schultz's comic strip was named "Lil Folks." It is fascinating to see how early he had developed some characters' features (Lucy and Charlie Brown). It is also possible to see how far Snoopy comes along as a character with a ripe, expansive internal life, when he was still "just a dog" in the 1950s.
I won't bore you with the details; if you're a Peanuts fan, you already know who's who and all that. Suffice to say that, for Peanuts fans or those wanting an overview of the Great Charles Schutlz's work, this is a fine place to start the journey.
I loved this set so much that I would rate it more than 5 stars if I could!
- The box set is awsome.
Hard cover, high quality paper and tons of Peanuts.
Must have item!
- I am now on the second volume of this set, and I will be sticking with them through the entire series, buying every box set released! These volumes are great! Even the simple, clean, uninterrupted way the comics are shown is great. Before I know it, an hour has passed, and I'm excited to see that I still have 100 pages' worth of reading -- and then more excited to know that a lot more volumes are coming. This is a fascinating way to see how the comics evolved, and to see how Schulz had created something special, from the very beginning. I recommend these!!!

2 comments about Kovels' Antiques & Collectibles Price Guide 2009: America's Bestselling and Most Up-to-Date Antiques Annual (Kovels' Antiques and Collectibles Price List).
- Great for information, a bit inflated on the prices!
This book is great for identifying certain pieces, but the prices aren't always set in reality. If you want to sell your collection and you're looking for real numbers, do some completed auction research on ebay or google the folks at vintagerarestuff. But for identifying, it is really nice :-)
- I been getting these guides for the past 20 years. There a good basic guide when you need them. I prefer actual sales information to get a value for something. The only thing, I don't like about them are that they don't have photo for most of the items they list. Sure they put some pictures in the book. But an item without a picture, is only a guess what you think it is.

4 comments about The Official Red Book: A Guide Book of United State Coins 2009 (Guide Book of United States Coins) (Guide Book of United States Coins) (Guide Book of United States Coins).
- Great book. I am new to collecting and selling coins. This gives me a basic idea of the value of coins I buy and sell. Of course book value and what a seller can get for a coin may be very different, this book helps to at least give me a starting pint.
- This book has all the information that I need in finding what to look for in the grade of a coin and the price of that grade. I always go to this book before I buy a cion, to see if the cost is in the area listed.
- #1 Best Selling Price Guide is a MUST:
The official RED BOOK a guide book to United States Coins R.S.Yeoman ed. Kenneth Bressett, 61th edition, Whitman, 2009.
Best in organization, easy of use, pictures, illustrations, & data, also the most popular. Whitman's RED BOOK is an essential guide, indispensable requisite and required handbook with up-to-date numismatic information.
Best of the best in the area of numismatics have contributed to this volume, the most notable, respected, knowledgeable and distinguished numismatist were consulted for the 61th edition.
165 plus prominent coin collectors auctioneers, and museums contributed directly to the 2009 Red Book Guide, Bressett, Jeff Garrett, Tom Hallenbeck, Steve Contursi, Ira & Larry Goldberg, Bill Fivaz, David Akers, Silvano DiGenova, the Smithsonian Institution, Heritage Galleries, the ANA money museum, Stack's Rare Coins, Superior Galleries, the United States Mint, and several dozens more.
The guide has some problems, notable some errors occurred and as I mentioned earlier "All" prices guides without exception are outdated by the time is printed, mainly due to market conditions, collector interest, commodities volatility, speculators, currency value, supply & demand, among others.
Numismatics is a hobby as any other do not expect a handsome return on your investment, at least not a monetary one. Have fun. Good luck.
- This is a must be coin book for U.S. coin collectors. Very informative and much improved edition compare to the previous issues. I would highly recommend this to everyone collecting U.S. coins and its territories!

5 comments about The Hemi in the Barn: More Great Stories of Automotive Archaeology.
- I have the first book, "The Cobra in the Barn", this book is as good if not better, worth the price!
- If you are into old cars then its a good book written is chapeters you can easily pick up and put down .
- A good read and there are interesting search methods which others have employed to make their barn finds a reality. Many of the stories point out how dedicated and diligent people have gotten in finding these more unique barn finds. This is a good compilation of the story behind the car, or more specifically a set of stories which can complete the car enthusiasts education.
- awesome!!! if i could write as an author- this would be my life long story! it made me feel like i was 21 and hunting again--in fact i may start again. a real treasure for classic car lovers!!!
- Tom Cotter is a good writer, a good editor (some of these pieces were written by others or with others) and above all, a knowledgeable and enthusiastic car collector. Both this book and its' predecessor, "The Cobra In The Barn" are great bedside reading; the stories are just short enough that you can enjoy a few before you drop off. They are also great for those times that you come in from the garage needing a rest after struggling with ONE bolt for two hours. They help you remember why we love automobiles, why we work on them and try to bring them back to what they were when new, and why there are really only two kinds of people in the world: those who can't resist looking in old barns, behind doors, and under tarps- and those who couldn't care less. These books are for those of us who look, and dream.

3 comments about Greenberg's Guides Lionel Trains Pocket Price Guide 2009 (Greenberg's Pocket Price Guide Lionel Trains, 1901 - 2009 (Greenberg's Pocket Price Guide Lionel Trains).
- This 325 page price guide is an excellent reference guide for Lionel Trains made between 1901 through 2009. Prewar, Postwar and Modern era trains are covered. In addition, Modern Tinplate, Club and Special Edition "O" Gauge cars and catalogs are also covered. However, this guide does not cover Lionel "OO" gauge, Lionel HO or Lionel Large Scale Train products manufactured during this period.
The guide is arranged in numerical product order and is very handy in looking up items that one may not be familiar with. The Value pricing in this guide is somewhat over inflated for many items. More realistic pricing reflecting current market conditions would enhance this guide.
- I use this book as a guide before purchasing any Lionel items. I have found it to save me quite a bit money over the last few years, as far as not over paying for something. I buy this new guide every year.
Thank you,
Kenneth
- I was looking for a pricing book for Lionel trains as I have a friend who has some for sale. It is nice to have the prices but would have preferred a reference book with pictures.....So I ordered another book.

5 comments about 2008 Standard Catalog of Firearms: The Collector's Price and Reference Guide (Standard Catalog of Firearms).
- I like this book and how they price out the guns. The gun pictures are the big plus for me.
- Purchased this book for our son so can't review personally but believe he has found this useful.
- This book presents a great overview of firearms both modern and antique. I've found it to be a great way to quickly locate information on a surprising array of weapons. While usually unable to give a lot of in-depth information on individual arms, it does give a quick overview with very pertinent details included. I've been very impressed by how many firearms, especially antique and reproduction 19th century muskets, are included. Great value for the price!
- I have the 2000 and 2002 editions of this guide and was very impressed, but the the 2008 is a disappointment. The picture quality is very poor and the newspaper type paper and print are very displeasing.
- You need this for a good price list that is current with todays market on Firearms. 2007 book has about the same prices but a few dollars difference, both books are very good in pricing your weapons.

5 comments about The Titanic Coloring Book.
- My son is really into Titanic and we both had a great time coloring all of the beautiful pictures in this book! This to me is a MUST BUY if you have a little one who loves Titanic. Heck, as an adult I love this.
- Titanic coloring book is great for kids. The book is great because the wonderful pages of art are masterpieces when you color them, there also great for tracing too or helping you draw your own titanic picture. The book i say is for all ages, yes including you grandpa.
THE BOOK IS JUST FUN!!!!!!
- My 5-year-old son is infatuated with the Titanic! This was the perfect and age-appropriate gift for him. He had the whole book colored in about three days, but I must admit, I colored some with him - and enjoyed it! The illustrations are superb and the text is also good! Chock-full of interesting facts.
- it helps you learn how it sunk and it really is a good book to get.
- A book that invites children to color in scenes from a well-known disaster is probably as horrifying, as sinking in the ship itself. After being exposed to the media hype and all of the other coverage surrounding the film release and the Oscars, the last thing I would want is for children who color, which means they are usually of pre-school age, let their imagination run wild with a box of crayons. Studies have shown that children are attracted to color, and I can just imagine the 64 crayola packs famed magenta coloring the dresses of the woman jumping into the life boats. The cries for help written in block letters and sky blue for the bitter cold water that took so many lives. Maybe they can start a companion series and have children color in scenes from Kobe or perhaps the fateful plane crashes on the twentieth century. This coloring book makes me worship teletubbies, as I pray to Barney for salvation.

5 comments about The Gun Digest Book of Combat Handgunnery.
- Good book with nice pictures. I have read all of the tactical books and this is one of the best overall. Covers most basic topics and is an excellent book to read before buying a firearm for self protection.
- Having read Massad's work for the past twenty years or so this is probably his best work yet. Everything you need to know for handgun use is in this book. If you don't have his other books search Amazon for them and get them as well. Once you start reading these you cannot put them down.
- Great book, with a mindblowing amount of information. Aimed at training cops, but useful info to civilians, especially about disarming armed people if need be. Also love that he included info on Reverend Kenneth Blanchard and Kenn's book "Black Man With a Gun."
Well done!
Michael W. Dean
- Save your money. The 6th Edition is exactly the same book as the 5th Edition published in 2002, except for the cover. You can buy the 5th Edition (used) on this website for as low as $1.67. Gun Digest should have pointed this out when they published the 6th Edition. I am surprised that such a distinguished publisher would resort to this tactic to make a few more bucks.
- I have read nearly all Massad Ayoob's books and many of his articles. When I got into guns recently, in particular handguns, I ran across his writings. They changed my life. Not only is he an authority on self defense with and without handguns, his analyses of guns and manufacturers of guns are superb. Anyone looking to learn about modern handgunnery ought to turn to Mas Ayoob's writings. His style is concise yet exploratory; his coverage is complete; his demonstrations and illustrations and/or photos are informative; and his message is clear: handgunnery is a serious subject, one that can take many hours of anyone's time, and it should be analyzed carefully along the way. And, finally, Gun Digest is an authority as well, so this combination of publisher and author is one with which you cannot go wrong.

5 comments about Practical Watch Repairing.
- Practical Watch RepairingMuch to detail and busy text for the novice user. Pictures are to small to really be very useful in simple repairs.
- I wanted a book that would help me understand and at the end allow me to repair or clean, oil and adjust a watch. This book didn't do it. It says you can start as a beginner. Wrong. Regardless of what other reviewers say, you will not end up disassembling and reassembling a vintage wristwatch. The material is too old and does not cover how you can do the tasks mentioned in the book with today's technology. You'll wind up falling to sleep.
- As a watchmaker by Trade, i bought this out of curiosity. From the techinques of openning a watch case to the description of indiviual watch parts is grossly outdated. New technology in watch production rendered this book obsolete and would only be suited to someone whose advanced in their studies as a watchmaker rather than a novice.
- This product, though very good, was not what I expected. It is apparently a very early book on watch repair (updated through the years), written by a watch repairman. The book targets persons wanting to begin a watch repair business, so it included the ideal work space, all the tools necessary to begin an ultimately profitable business, all good information but more than I wanted or needed. It is sometimes difficult to read because a few sections are quite technical and include jargon, but I was also able to locate and understand the information I needed for my own home watch repairs.
- I am amazed that this book (my edition printed in 2006) is an exact copy of a 1971 printing. Mechanical watches of today are readily described in this 35 year old text.
The 1971 dust jacket has hand drawn lettering. The 2006 dust jacket has been cleaned up by computer aided drawing. It was amazing to find out that the author passed away in 1989. He unfortunately lived long enough to see the Japanese demolish the mechanical watch industry.
This book does have a place in today's world...The mechanical Swiss Watch is making a comeback, although limited to those willing to invest in a $400 and up watch. But if you buy a good Swiss mechanical, it can be passed down and repaired by your heirs.. This book will probably still be available, when your heirloom is in need of repair...
