5 comments about Boston Terriers (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).
- A basic book on Bostons. Could of been more detailed with regards to potential health problems.
- Of the three books I purchased about Boston Terriers, this was by far the best. Tons of information, little stories from owners, and beautiful pictures.
- This book is a definitive look at the Boston bull. Readers learn about this spirited little hybrid dog which is the result of crossing English bulldogs with small white terriers. The breed was developed in the Boston area.
Good coverage is given to breeding; dental and overall health and the special care that pregnant Bostons require. Since Boston puppies have large heads, they are often delivered by Cesarean.
As much as I enjoyed the drawings of this beautiful breed, I wish there had been some photographs as well. Bostons are beautiful, intelligent and alert little dogs who make excellent pets and are ideal for families. Bostons are highly social and crave interaction.
This is a decent book, but it does leave readers wanting more. Still, it will appeal to those who own or just love the Boston bull.
- MY SON DECIDED TO GET A BOSTON TERRIER, HIS WIFE IS PREGNANT AND THEY WANTED A DOG THAT WOULD DO WELL WITH CHILDREN. THEY WANTED TO BE GOOD PARENTS TO THE PUPPY AS WELL AS THE BABY AND THIS BOOK HAD MORE INFO ON THE BOSTON TERRIER THAN ANY I LOOKED AT. IT COVERS THE FULL SPECTRUM FROM THE THOUGHT OF A BOSTON TERRIER TO ACTUALLY BRINGING IT HOME AND CARING FOR IT THROUGH IT'S LIFE. BEST BOOK I FOUND!
- This is a good starting book for those who are considering a Boston. It provides basic care information, but it is best paired with other books on Boston's so as to get the full picture. This would be a good starting book for someone who is trying to decide which puppy to get and wants a little information on the breed.
Though I recommend it be combined with other books, this is still a good quick reference to have on hand.

5 comments about The Dog Chapel: Welcome All Creeds, All Breeds. No Dogmas Allowed.
- Great book for anyone who likes dogs. My wife wants to go to the Dog Chapel now.
- This book should be required reading for all dog lovers and those that have lost their canine loves. Huneck is in touch with those feelings. Recommend to all.
- Very sweet and comforting book for those who have suffered the loss of a beloved pet. Good for children & adults. How wonderful to be offered an opportunity to send pictures of your pet to be placed in memory at the Remembrance Wall at the DOG CHAPEL-
Mr Huneck- the author as well as artist for the book-must be a special person to create this loving tribute. I'll bet his dogs think so too!
- This is the best book. I always gift it when someone has a beloved dog pass away. Huneck has a gift with his books.
- This is a beautiful book, well written, and full of wonderful pictures. The authors account of how the book came to be is touching. For anyone who has had to put their dog to sleep, a gift of this book would be of great comfort. There is even a memorial picture frame in the back of the book in which you can send a photo of your dog up to the chapel.

5 comments about Eclectus Parrots.
- This book is very informative and covers most aspects of Eclectus Behavior and Care. I would definitely recommend this book to other purchasers.
- I bought this book before getting my eclectus parrot and I found it to cover everything I can think of I could possibly want to know. Shows pictures of Eclectuses displaying different body languages and their explanations. Covers diets, differences between sub-species,covering a cage or not to cover and much more. Lots of pictures too.
- Very using useful guide to help you take care of your eclectus bird. Nice pictures. Easy read. Sound advices.
- This is a concise and helpful guide for all those who reside with an Eclectus parrot or hope to do so soon. Eclectus are unique in important ways other than being sexually dimorphic (males and females look different). They also do not do well on seed or pellet diets fed to many parrots. The book covers care of your bird, how to provide necessary intellectual stimulation with safe toys, information about common health problems and lots of other information critical to the well-being of your feathered friend.
- I just received my copy of the book from the mail. My first impression was that it was quite thin. I was hoping for more information about breeding and aviary design, but the sections dealing with those topics were quite short. I was hoping to find a section wherein hybrids were thoroughly discussed and if a hybrid bird would have any deformities later on or if they would lead to infertile offspring.
Also, I was hoping to find more detailed analysis, and photographic documentation (probably pictures of different races perching side by side for comparison) of the different races.
Anyway, except for the above-mentioned items, I found the book quite useful specially for beginners like myself.

5 comments about A Guide to Night Sounds: The Nighttime Sounds of 60 Mammals, Birds, Amphibians, and Insects.
- Night has always fascinated, and sometimes terrified, me. Blacklighting for moths alone in the Davis Mountains I heard in the distance the lonely calls of a group of coyotes - a sound that both thrilled me and made me uneasy. The sounds of a poorwill echoing through the canyons of Baja California's Sierra de la Giganta and whiskered screech owls near Geronimo Pass in the Peloncillo Mountains of Arizona-New Mexico gave the night a character that I will never forget.
My daughter gave me a copy of "A Guide to Night Sounds" for Fathers Day and I must say that it was great to hear some of the creatures I have heard on well-remembered nights and some that I have never heard, but hope to some day. Lang Elliot is a good narrator and does a great job of explaining the various sounds and behaviors associated with them.
My only complaint (and it is one that I'm sure many have) is that this just gives the listener a sampling of the huge variety of sounds one hears in the night. Around my house I hear night songs, not only from the mockingbird (which Elliott mentions along with the actual recording of a catbird), but also its close relative the curved-billed thrasher, which he implies has no night song. In recent times their night time chorus has been joined by the hoot of the great horned owl and in the close distance the wok of the black-crowned night heron. In rain storms both spadefoot and Bufo toads make considerable noise from the nearby fields. The list could go on and on, including broad-winged and cone-headed katydids, the barking of grey foxes and the chittering (just audible to some younger folk) of bats. I suppose that it would be hard to include everything and this CD contains a great sampling that leaves you with the wish for more. As in all of these works there seems to be a bias toward the eastern United States, but again this is where most of the people who work with animal sounds live, so I can't be too critical, I can only say that one day I hope a similar recording and book will emerge for mostly western creatures of the night.
I recommend this for those who would like to get at least a taste of the real night in nature.
- I bought a book that comes with a CD: the CD is defective. It can no be played. I have written two letters asking what should I do. I want the product, but a need a CD that is not defective. No answer from Amazon.
I am very dissapointed. I am not buying another product until this matter is solved.
- If you live in the woods or country and are curious about what goes bump in the night, this book and CD will explain those noises. We kept hearing a wonderful creature but had no way to identify it. Turns out it was a screech owl (they don't hoot nor do they screech). This book has also helped identify several frogs & night birds. As a bonus, Lang has a very pleasant voice and the CD is well made.
- It's nice to listen to in the car (for a while, at least). It's pretty useless, though, since the geographical area is not limited enough. There might be a couple of those 60 animals in your area, but about 50 of 'em won't be. This should be a series of CD's: one for the northeast, one for the southwest....and so on.
- I love Lang Elliott's voice. It is very soothing and doesn't detract from the bird, reptile and insect sounds. I was able to identify a Horned Owl from the CD, so it is informative, too. The sounds are grouped on different tracks so it's easy to find the category you want, much better than a cassette tape.

5 comments about Quality Deer Management: The Basics and Beyond.
- The author, Charles Alsheimer, does a fantastic job bringing the ourdoors inside and providing valuable information that would be of great help to anyone interested in deer hunting and the management of that valued resource--the whitetail deer. I even bought a second one to give to a fellow hunter/land owner friend who is also interested in quality deer management.
- I have read several books about creating better habitat, food plots, etc for whitetails, and this book is by far the most comprehensive, in depth book I've read. The author truly knows his stuff and gives tons of tips for improving your deer herd and deer hunting. Excellent buy, great photography.
- Alsheimer shows what deer hunting is made of with this book. You'll get top-of-the-line information on planting food plots, managing trees, keeping records on your deer, hunting deer for your setup--everything!! He not only tells you how to manage your property and deer, but also explains how deer live throughout the entire year.
Charlie Alshiemer is a photographer by trade, which is very obvious in this book. His photos of whitetails are nothing short of amazing.
His style is very matter-of-fact and easy to understand, making it that much more enjoyable to read.
This is by far the most informative book I have ever read. Buy it today; you will get your money's worth. I wish there were more books like this one on the market!! I'll give it as many stars as are available!!
- I couldn't put the book down. I grew up in Steuben County in the town of Caton. Iam going to start implementing some of the things I learned in this book this year. I would tell anyone interested in learning how to grow bigger deer (buck or doe) should read this book.
- Charlie Alsheimer is possibly the best white-tailed deer writer of all time. He is certainly the best deer photographer. His new book Quality Deer Managment the Basics and Beyond, is a prime example of both his talent as a writer and his brilliance as a photographer. I believe it to be his best book ever.
The book is written in Charlie's classic down home, easy to read style with easy to grasp explinations of complicated deer managment issues. He covers virtually every aspect of the QDM scene with common sense and uncommon insight. His treatment of the topic is inspirational and leaves you wanting to get out there and start practicing QDM now! The photos chosen to illustrate the text are nothing short of spectacular. They bring the entire text to life in brilliant color and give you an up close and personal view of whitetails as only Alsheimer can. After reading this book I picked up a copy of "Grow 'em Right" the new "how to" habitat and food plot book by Dougherty & Dougherty and am now ready to conquer the world of Quality deer managment. Now white-tailed deer book library is complete without this book

5 comments about How to Start a Home-Based Pet Care Business, 2nd (Home-Based Business Series).
- self help book in starting a pet business. I was hoping for a little more information
- Salzberg's experience in the pet care industry comes from her work as a groomer, and her book reflects this. While she does briefly cover such topics as pet sitting/dog walking and obedience training with a chapter on each, there isn't a whole lot of information here for someone hoping to break into one of these businesses. There is much more in depth information for those hoping to start a grooming business, but even so about half the book covers general how to start your own business information with a chapter each on starting a business, creating a home office, accounting, insurance, banking and the basics of working at home - none of the information in these chapters was specific to the pet care industry. Some "fluff" on the history of pet grooming and the increasing amount of money people spend on their pets rounded out the information. This book probably won't prove useful to anyone who wants more than a brief overview of getting into the pet care business. Salzberg herself recomends the books Pet Sitting for Profitby Patti J. Moran and The Professional Pet Sitter: Your Guide to Starting and Operating a Successful Service Edition 2005 Newly-Revised Includes Business Formsby Lori and Scott Mangold and these would probably prove better bets for people looking for detailed information on getting into the animal care business.
- This book was informative however please note that it is very US focussed and will not be of great assistance with regards to regulations in other countries.
The book did not provide an all round knowledgebase for setting up a dog walking business - mainly focussed on grooming.
- There are two main aspects to a home-based Pet Care business, or in fact to just about any business. First is the part of the business that is special to the particular business. For a pet care business this includes such things as grooming equipment that is unique to this business as opposed say to starting a car repair shop. Second is the standard rules fo business. For instance, what do you need in the way of business licenses, will you be a corporation, what about insurance -- all that stuff. This book draws a nice balance between the two requirements.
There's only one point I would do differently, not so much differently as with a greater emphasis. That is: Get a Computer. You don't need the latest and fastest, I bought quite an acceptable computer at a thrift shop for $75. Then get some accounting software. When they get around to questioning you, the IRS will look at computer generated reports with a lot more acceptance than they will at any manual system. QuickBooks is a good package (there are others). The latest version will cost you two or three hundred dollars. Or you can buy last year's version on eBay for about a hundred, or the year before that for about $65. Each year buy an income tax package, about $20. Do your own taxes and then have an accountant go over them. You can type stuff into the package just as well as he can and he will charge you a bunch.
All in all the book is very well written, the authors clearly understand the business. The writing style is clear and informative. Highly recommended.
- this is a great book to give a first time entrepenuer good guidance

5 comments about Hand-Feeding and Raising Baby Birds: Breeding, Hand-Feeding, Care, and Management.
- Matthew Vriends HAND-FEEDING AND RAISING BABY BIRDS is of some use to me although I prefer Gayle Souck's PARROT BREEDER'S ANSWER BOOK. Vriend's book is not nearly as comprehensive, he goes deep whereas Soucek goes broad. However, I appreciate the detailed sections on the selection, care and maintenance of incubators including photos of the various types of incubators as well as text describing air filtration systems (`still air' and ventilation), automatic egg turners versus doing it yourself, and temperature, light and humidity considerations. Interestingly, neither author cites the other even tho Barron's produced both books and they are somewhat complementary.
As well as incubation, Vriends book covers feeding in great detail with numerous photos of very small chicks being hand fed. I like this book because I needed more in-depth information about actual feeding practices, including a discussion of the different nutritional needs of different birds who require formulas. Whether you are raising companion birds or you are an animal rehabilitator/rescuer you will probably find this book useful.
- This book was OK. It talks about all pet birds, so it really only gives a little bit of information about each. If you are looking to know about handfeeding ONE certain kind of bird, then I would look for a different book. The pictures are very cute though.
- If you have patience, you can get a good "overview" of handfeeding pet baby birds here..
If not.. I suggest you go elsewhere. Dr.Vriends thoughts are disorganized, self-congratulatory, and all over the place. He could of used an intelligent editor here. Each chapter has information that is right out of the authors head-- instead of organizing laying of eggs, incubating, feeding, etc. in concise chapters. The chapters repeat lots of information. I found it very hard to follow-- trying to turn forward and back to other chapters with "sort of" the same topic. I respect Dr. Vriends expertise on most everything...but, the points on this book are not organized. What if you don't want to feed the baby birds when they first hatch? What if you want to socialize them while still letting the mom and dad feed? There are lots of places here where I left scratching my head-- and re-reading the convoluted syntax in this book asking "what is he trying to say here"? This book definately is written from the standpoint of out of the incubator, into the breeders hands... Dr. Vriends, you have more experience on this to share, don't you? Too professional a book...
- It's a good book and easy to read, but it's more focussed on professional breeding than it is for people who just bought a bird and want more information about raising and hand-feeding. Even though it's good reading material.
- This book takes the novice from the very beginning. It covers every aspect of handfeeding. Concise, easy to read, with great colour pictures. I would recommend this book to the beginning handfeeder as well as those who are experienced.

3 comments about Benoit Bucks: Whitetail Tactics for a New Generation.
- This book is a update of " Big Bucks the Benoit way" It rehashes some of the other book and adds a little more. Each of the boys has a chapter on there favorite hunts and techniques. I like the first book a little better. Of the 60+ books I have on whitetail hunting the Benoit books are among my my favorite and also the ones I learned the most about "mature bucks" from. Hal Blood has a very good book too. If you buy just one book on tracking I'd get "Big Bucks the Benoit way" or Hal's book. I like the Benoits a little better because theres info from Larry, Lane, Shane, and Lanny in one book.
- If you dont have the 1st book, this is a great book!!! Without question, but all this book is, is a repeat with new pictures and littles bios of each of the Benoits. If you have the Big Bucks: The Benoit way and you are looking for new information out of this book, dont bother, you will be disappointed.
- This book is a must for any deer hunter. The primary focus is on tracking bucks, but this book would also do well for any hunter whether they are a stand, still hunter or a tracker. It is a great read and gives one practical advice on tracking down the buck of your dreams and bagging it. This books follows in the footsteps of the other quality Benoit books ( Big Bucks the Benoit Way and How to Bag The Biggest Buck of Your Life ). The Benoits also have videos out showing their technique, and these are also well worth your money.

4 comments about The Horse Behavior Problem Solver : Your Questions Answered About How Horses Think, Learn, and React.
- I bought this book hoping for some basic advice about horses with vices. What I got was an interesting but altogether not very helpful collection of letters that addressed VERY specific problems. The answers did not include anything that really helped me as a rider either. All in all, it's a neat read but more of a borrow-from-the-library than a good buy.
- Unless you've totally missed the boat with natural horsemanship, you know that the key to doing anything with horses is having patience, a theme that is repeated over and over again in every section of this book. I needed help with a bucker, and Jessica's bucking info basically reiterated what I already know. Check saddle fit, and call in a professional trainer. If I had the money for a professional trainer, I wouldn't have bought her book.
- I have been suscribed to Jessica's HorseSense online newsletter for some time, and as soon as I found out she was putting a book together I knew I had to have it. I recommend it to ANYONE who wants to know more about horse behavior. Jessica explains everything in an easy to read and easy to understand manner. She addresses almost every problem that horse owners and horse riders have and the advice is just plain great. I would love some day to be able to meet her to share my admiration of her knowledge.
- This book is a must have for everyone who strives to be a better horsewoman/man. Jessica's perspective challenges us to look at things from the horse's prospective, to ask ourselves if we are communicating the right questions for the answers we get from our horses. Her advice is invaluable to me as I train my two 4 year olds. I refer to this book weekly and have read it cover to cover many times over. It seems that each time I read the questions and answers, I pick up something I missed the time before. Or maybe, the second or third reading, I am ready to Hear that part of the answer! More, Jessica! Keep writing!!
