5 comments about Doxie Moxie: Little Dog, Big Attitude.

  1. This book is great for kids and adults alike. The author has a true understanding of the Dachshund personality. I gave it to my 8 year old niece and my friend's 11 year old niece and I have a copy for myself. I pick it up whenever I need a smile.
    Nancy

  2. IF YOU ARE A DOXIE FAN THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU!!! IT'S TRULY RIGHT ON TARGET!
    GREAT PHOTOGRAPHS AND WONDERFUL TEXT.

  3. This little book is BIG on laughs for anyone who owns a Doxie or who loves dogs in general. Excellent photography and true-to-life snipets of what the famous Doxie's are all about. Great reading for all ages. Highly recommended.

  4. How can you go wrong with a photographic book about dachshunds?
Author Melissa Sovet has captured the long and short of the spirited breed. There are photos of doxies with bling, doxies being naughty, as well as doxies being charioted by working dogs.

If you love doxies you need this book!

  5. If you love Dachshunds or know anyone that does, this is the book to get or give as a gift! The pictures are absolutley adorable and funny - puppies, different colors, different poses, costumes - very sweet!
The text, written as a "doxie" describes the dog very accurately and uses several quotes in just the right places.
A great book for "Doxie" lovers and a great little "pick me up" book for anyone else!

5 comments about The Nature of Animal Healing : The Definitive Holistic Medicine Guide to Caring for Your Dog and Cat.

  1. A real eyeopener. The chapter on vaccines was good & as stated had my dogs tested & they did not need vaccines . Its a shame the vets don't tell you a titters test is avaiable instead of over vaccinating. Start reading pet food labels in more detail even if it says its organic find out from the manufacturer if they get food from another source and if thats the case they don't have to list the chemicals in that part. A must read if you want a healthy animal.

  2. My book had no signs of abuse and was in great shape except some of the pages had yellowing from age. It arrived in a very timely manner. I would order again from this company. I was very pleased with their customer service.

  3. If you are looking for more information, as I have been, this is a good book. It was very helpful. I am reading practically everything I can find regarding dog health as my 4 -year old Siberian cross just developed epilepsy. I have discovered that each book I get has an extra bit of information that I did not glean before from other books. (Good for the booksellers, right?) But seriously, it has good information! I recommend it.

  4. Within four days of following many of the suggestions in this book, my two huge ailing dogs started smiling abundantly, staying awake more, and enjoying life again! I love knowing I am making a difference in their lives by giving them a healthier and more delicious diet. This book stays on my bedside table for frequent reference, and my friends are buying copies as well. It inspires me to be a better mama for my loving furchildren! Nan Shaw

  5. For everyone who lives with dogs and/or cats, this is a must have book. It is comprehensive and full of invaluable information. He discusses everything from diet to cancer to vaccines. He provides rather detailed information, not just skimming the surface of the topics. He includes lots of useful sources as well. I was so excited when I got this book that I immediately ran to the store to implement some of the changes.

5 comments about Christmas Is Good!: Trixie Treats & Holiday Wisdom.

  1. Got this book today and loved it. Was reading it over breakfast to my husband and my Mum. We were all laughing - the perfect was to start a way! Think I'll be getting more to give as presents.

  2. Bought this a couple years ago as a Christmas gift for my father, although I must have read through it myself 20 times. We have a Golden also. This book is exceptionally funny as well as touches on the true meaning of the Christmas holiday. A great "stocking stuffer" for everyone!

  3. This is a Christmas book written by editor Dean Koontz' dog Trixie. Cute, is about the best word to use here with this book. It's a children's book focusing on how a dog perceives Christmas. Some of it's funny, and being a dog lover I could relate. But really, there is not a lot of substance to this book. Koontz has done much better children's books.

  4. This book is cute, funny, and so "goldenish", I could swear my own dog (a Golden) wrote it. Trixie is a goddess!

  5. As the mom of two Golden Retrievers I am biased in favor of Trixie. I received this book as a gift at the same time that I found that my cat of 13 years had terminal cancer. The warm, sweet tone of this book was a great comfort to me; I kept it at my desk and read it when I needed a distraction. I also gave five copies of this book as Christmas gifts, with great feedback.

This book is about Christmas, and does have some Christian overtones, such as a couple of specific mentions of Jesus, which might make it inappropriate for some. With that single caveat, very highly recommended.

5 comments about Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook.

  1. This book is very well written and very informative,
I have recommened this to my friends.

  2. I have a couple of paperback first aid books for dogs but I wanted something more comprehensive. We live in a rural area so a quick trip to the vet not possible. This does not take the place of seeing a vet when necessary, but the book gives easy to understand answers for many everyday problems and well organized.

  3. Very helpful book, easy to use, full of information about different dog diseases and ailments. I highly recommend this book hand in hand with:
The First Aid Companion for Dogs & Cats (Prevention Pets) These books should be in every dog owners' home.

  4. This is a excellant Book for any Dog Owner. Has lots of information that is useful.

  5. Very concise and to the point. Great index in the front of the book to help quickly identify and find the dogs ailment. Very detailed and has a lot of incredibly useful information. A must-have for every dog owner.

5 comments about My Smart Puppy: Fun, Effective, and Easy Puppy Training (Book & 60min DVD).

  1. This is a wonderful book. It describes, in detail, challenges to expect when training your puppy and behaviors encountered during the different puppy developmental stages. It also gives extensive information on puppy temperament & personality types as well as training exercises. It seems to cover just about every question/issue about raising a well-rounded puppy. I have not had a puppy since childhood and this book answered a lot of questions I had about raising him properly.

  2. A must read for all potential or new puppy owners, or just about anyone looking for great training techniches. Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson share such amazing knowledge and experience in this superb book. We would have been lost without it.

  3. Great book and CD on training your puppy, very detailed. It works if you follow the directions

  4. I bought this book when we got our first puppy. I think it is a clear read and has good suggestions. The DVD was also an excellent way to educate everyone in the family about puppy training.

  5. Great ideas - good techniques. It's a shame there isn't some way to get folks to read this book "before" bringing that new puppy home. That way all your instruction to the pup will be correctly done and the poor pup won't have to "unlearn" some home-spun ideas you used before you read the book. Worth the read.

5 comments about The Cat Behavior Answer Book: Practical Insights & Proven Solutions for Your Feline Questions (Answer Book (Storey)).

  1. I absolutely LOVE cats, and this book is very informative and funny. If you like cats, you will like this book. I love it!

  2. Great book and I would reccommend this to other readers. I should have gotten this book when I first got my cat 2 years ago instead of wasting my money on Kittens/Cats for Dummies.

  3. Finally. Real reasons why my two 14-year-old male cats (littermates)were missing the litterbox -- and using the rug in the living room. And the cat fights at meal time were just driving me nuts. I mean, these cats are senior and I was fearful one of them would stroke out on me. Taking the cats out for a walk was becoming a burden. The result? I changed MY behavior and presto! No more fights, no more deposits in the LR, wonderful cat walks. All I had to do was to acknowledge the Alpha Male first when entering, exiting the house, and serving him his meal first at mealtime. Oh, yeah. I changed the litter to a nice-smelling litter! The boys hated it. Thanks Arden! Simple solutions that worked for me. Remember, one size does not fit all -- you may have to try more than one solution for the behavior you want to change, and the result tells you what is working. The ANSWER (book) may surprise you.

  4. Yes, it is hard to say that a book has the answers for everything, so I can only say that it had answers to our problems. I moved my cat into a new house, where I thought the laundry room in the finished basement would be the best place for the litter box. Well, he (the cat) has been trying to tell me for weeks now (by pooping on the carpet, that is) that he doesn't like it there, and thanks to the good help of this book, I can now regain some sanity in our new house! As a fairly new cat owner, the book helped me figure out that I should move the box to a new location and probably add a second box on the upstairs level. Problem fixed! In addition to that, the book was entertaining and I read it from cover to cover, just to make sure I wasn't missing any other signs! Highly recommended.

  5. I had read a good review of this book in Cat Fancy magazine, so I thought I would order it, thinking that it probably wouldn't teach me very much. How wrong I was. I learned so much about my cat from this book, and I recommend it highly to any cat owner that has wondered why his/her cat acts the way it does. The author is knowledgable, and this book will have a permanent spot in my library.

5 comments about For Every Dog an Angel.

  1. On June l9, 2008 we euthanized 3 canine friends we had had for many years. Why all together? Two of the dogs were mother and son--the mother in advanced senility and other health issues and her son was completely paralyzed with hip displasia. Louie, the youngest, was dying with cancer. They came together as rescues and were close friends for many years. Thank you, Christine Davis, for this enchanting book. Thank you for letting us think that perhaps they are truly together and no longer in pain.

  2. Her dog had just passed away and she was grieving. I sent her this book and a few days later she called me to say it made a big difference in her life.

  3. This is the sweetest heartfelt little book. It made me smile and cry. I recently lost my "Forever Dog" of 11 years. Worth buying.

  4. maybe this would make you feel better. In my case, nothing really helped when I lost my dog. This book didn't really do it for me.

I wouldn't really be able to give it as a gift to someone either, just don't like the religous overtones.

  5. I purchased this book for a friend who had just lost her beloved dog. I took the opportunity to read it before sending it to her and instantly fell in love with it. What a wonderful, comforting book for anyone whether they be a child or adult. It gives us all hope that there really is a special place for our pets after they have passed on.

5 comments about Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul: Stories of Canine Companionship, Comedy and Courage (Chicken Soup for the Soul).

  1. I love dogs. Each little story was heartwarming, entertaining, caught my attention and mostly heartbreaking/bittersweet (in the endings). It is about dogs relationships with people and other animals and peoples with dogs. I cried so much I ended up with a tension headache/migraine and was in bed for a day on medication to relieve the pain. I dread the day I loose my litle Teddy (Maltese) + know how I rescued him. Not meant for the little ones-they may cry more than I did.

  2. We love dogs especially and we used to have a beautiful black lab but she's gone to heaven now! Our children got this lab for their stepfather years ago for Father's Day and of all the pets we have had over the years; this one was extra special to us! The book is great but the hubby cannot read much of it right now as he misses lady a lot. But, from what I've seen, I like it and believe others will too! I am a big fan of the Chicken Soup books and have always been impressed with their books and this one is no exception!

  3. Haven't had time to read a book in quite some time. I made time for this one. If your a dog lover, you can't go without reading this book. LOVED IT.
Purchaed 3 copies and gave two away.

  4. This book is for you! Typical Chicken Soup fare but on the plus side, dogs are the lead characters. Lots of tearjerkers, heart warmers and amusing anecdotes. The format makes for perfect short reads (bathroom, waiting for appointments, lunch breaks). I recommend it highly.

  5. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! I love the stories and many of them bring me to tears. They're all great & really show the unconditional love of our dogs.

5 comments about Clicking With Your Dog: Step-By-Step in Pictures (Karen Pryor Clicker Books).

  1. This is a very clear illustration and explanation of working with your dog using the clicker method. I like it.

  2. This is the sister of cookie training. Why use a clicker when you can use your voice? You are not mute for crying out loud. You can mark a command, a behavior, or even a trick much better with your voice. Besides, this method is for dog owners with three arms. One, to hold those treats, two to click around, and three to hold on to that leash.

If you truly believe that dogs like to please us, then why rely on a clicker or even a treat? Think about it. Your dog should sit because you said so and not because of a bacon strip. How I know this??? Because I actually train dogs for a living and am one the top in my field. These guys tell you to give your dog treats just for being alive. You will end up with a fat dog that drools and licks it's mouth every time you ask it to sit or lay down. It doesn't take much skill or talent to bribe a dog with treats and then call it dog training.

  3. The illustrations and the short, exact written instructions make it a wonderful handbook both for novices and experienced people who want to clicker train pets.

  4. This woman really knows dogs. Her training methods really work. This book definitely changed the way I relate to my dogs, and it made training so much easier.

  5. I have read a couple of clicker training books and have also gotten advice from a clicker-savvy friend, but read this to see if it had anything more to offer me. For those who don't know, clicker training uses a marker (the clicker) to mark the exact moment your dog is doing something you want her to. It's very powerful because it sends a kind of snapshot straight to your dog of what you want. You then, of course, give some kind of reward after clicking.

I liked that this book had lots of pictures and presented the information in different ways, for people with different styles of learning. Also, the author shows that there is more than one way to teach a behavior, even within the clicker training philosophy. To me, this is where many dog training books fall short. They present one way of approaching a new task, but there are many types of dogs and many types of trainers! To be shown that shaping, luring, and just waiting for behaviors are all possible ways to succeed is very encouraging. Of course, each task must still be broken down into baby steps, and each training session must be positive.

My one and only complaint is that Ms Tillman suggests raisins and grapes in her list of possible treats to use for your dog. There is anecdotal evidence that raisins and grapes can cause kidney failure in dogs. It's not necessarily proven, but why take a chance? Read this book, but skip the fruit of the vine! And have fun!
