5 comments about Teach Your Horse Perfect Manners: How You Should Behave So Your Horse Does Too.
- I myself am a beginner, and have found this book to be extremely helpful. Aside from boosting your confidence, Kelly Marks gives clear, consise intructions on how to best solve any given situation, granted that it is that kind of a problem. The illustrations are wonderful, and are very helpful if you are a visual learner. I very much appreciate this book.
- I actually couldn't put this book down. It is so well written. I didn't realize until I had purchased the book that the author is a student of Monty Roberts. She carries forth his message as well as her own experiences in an informative yet entertaining way. I hope she branches out into DVD's, as well.
- kind of elementary for what i was expecting, but i suppose it would be helpful to someone at that level - all in all it is a pretty good book
- You do not need to be a horse whisperer, or even a cowboy to enjoy this book. With Ms. Marks as my guide, I was able to learn things about these animals I didn't know like: "Sometimes you can foresee a negative pattern starting up; for example, when you braid a horse, he realizes that he's going to a show and goes off his feed. If this is the case, change his routine to avoid any anxiety starting." Did you know this?
What do you see when you see a horse? When I see a horse, I see an animal whose ancestors time and time again were the only creatures on earth standing between my ancestors and certain death. And I realize that I might not even be here if it were not for these majestic animals. I do what I can for them knowing that it is enough that I am of value to somebody today. Please support your local SPCA and Equine Rescue Services. Author, Bob Miller
- I like this book and it has some interesting stories, but if you already participate in a program like Parelli, etc. (as I do) then there isn't really any new information. Buying the book is cheaper, but buying the Parelli DVD program gives you a lot more.
If I wasn't doing Parelli, then this book would be a good start. It would be helpful if there was more trouble-shooting.

5 comments about Scent and the Scenting Dog.
- Good book that makes it easy to understand the complex nature of tracking human scent. Opened my eyes and gave me a new prespective!
- This book is an excellent book for anyone involved in tracking with dogs.
- I was first introduced to Scent and the Scenting Dog in 1973 when I went through the Seattle Police K-9 Academy. I found it to be the only text to present the facts of scent and scentwork in a scientific manner. The underlaying source information is footnoted and verifiable. This book presents the facts of scent and avoids simplistic methods. It demonstrates to the practitioner the scent evidence available to the dog under differing circumstances and what methods of application/training are likely to succeed. It also describes the physiology of the dog's olfactory system, giving the reader a factually based understanding of the dog's ability and power to receive scent. It is as accurate and valuable today as when it was written. I relied upon this book as a police dog handler, and retained it as a text when teaching future handlers through a 20 year career.
- This was a great book for theory. Helps you to understanding what you might be seeing when those seemingly unexplainable things happen on the track. It won't teach you to track at all, but it will help you understand the mechanics of your dogs senses and scent. This was the missing link for me.
- Thorough and easy to understand explanation of human and vegetative scents, their relevance to search dog training, and the ways their properties affect searches and are affected by influences such as heat and snow. A well researched and presented argument for air searching over tracking and trailing. I'd like to see a similarly clear and easily understood essay by Mr Syrotuck on passive and pro-active narcotic dog training. I found this manual fascinating and full of invaluable information.

3 comments about Dog Blessings: Poems, Prose, and Prayers Celebrating Our Relationship with Dogs.
- Dog Blessings is a unique collection of poems and prayers. All of these entries are written with a deep underlying feeling of unconditional love of a human-dog relationship. Basically, it is humans celebrating and giving thanks for the companionship that they have experienced with their animal friends.
The book is divided into eight sections: A Dog's World; Puppies, Our Bond; Devotion; Aging Gracefully; Partings; Reflections; and Prayers, Blessings, and Inspiration. There is a gambit of emotion here. There is the playfulness of a new puppy, the joyous connection that occurs as human and dog bond, and deep sadness when a friend passes. Most any dog lover will find him or herself in the words of these poems.
- Some of June's selections are so poignant, I had strong emotions upon reading, however, in a completely rewarding way. I highly recommend the book for anyone who believes, like I do, that dogs have a spiritual side to them. Stephen Shultz
- Touching, humorous and wise, DOG BLESSINGS will appeal to a wide range of folks from canine neophytes busy training their new pups to long time dog lovers.
It is also the perfect read for those needing encouragement to take the leap involved in welcoming man's best friend into their lives and hearts for the first time.
Thoroughly covering the span of years and emotions, chapters range from puppies to partings. The moving power of devotion and bond between man and dog is captured on every page.

5 comments about Every Living Thing.
- This is one of my favorite James Herriot titles and Christopher Timothy always does a great job reading and putting feeling into the text. I highly recommend each book and audio recording in the series.
- Looking for a quick fix for your animal-loving heart? This is it! Each chapter can be read in a sitting and each has a different story about Mr.. Herriot's life as a country vet. Each story builds the lives and area around him, but each chapter has a beautiful and loving story about this wonderful man and his never-ending love for all creatures!
- I have just finished this book after having read the other books in the series many years ago. The magic is still there. I would not ordinarily be attracted to a book of animal stories but the animals in Dr. Herriot's practice are a stage for something more. The author gives the reader a slice of life from a different time and a different place (Yorkshire). I was quickly enamored with the characters and the telling. This book is really about gentle spirits, kind humor, unpretentious people, dedicated lives. Reading it makes the heart glad.
- This is my fifth review of a James Herriot title, and if you've missed my first four reviews because you live in a cave, I presume you've heard of the TV series called All Creatures Great And Small. That was based on the first collection of wonderful tales from a Yorkshire veterinarian, or possibly the first few. More than a decade passed between this book and the one before it, and I believe this was his last original book. At first there is a dip in the quality we've come to expect, but once he gets back into his groove, it's every bit as entertaining as its predecessors, and I hated that it ended. It's well worth reading and I enjoyed it immensely.
- I read his books as a teen and loved them. Bought the whole set for my grandsons, [teens]. They laughed until they cried. [so did I].

5 comments about Jack Russell Terriers for Dummies.
- I know that the book is for dummies. I kept saying "Duh, teach me something new and effective." The book was heavy on the traits. I now know about the breed but I need solutions
- Guess it does say "for dummies" but I still thought this book as a little too elementary. Also, tired of hearing what bad qualities JRTs have -- a little too heavy on the negative side, I felt. Frankly, I didn't get a lot out of this book that was useful to me, a first-time JRT owner.
- We have two Jack Russell Terrorizors, and this book helped with the basics. I read it cover to cover a few times, and it had some good hints. It would be best to get this book before you ever get a dog, but I am sure that if you buy this book it is because you are already getting a Jack, not because you went out and bought every book of every type of dog. That is the only downside to this book. It spends way too much time talking about the decision to get a Jack. I guess this is because a lot of people got Jack's thinking they were apartment dogs and realized they had bought a Rambo when they should have bought a Fifi. This book should have said that Jack's are way more resilient than any other dog you can probably get (read: way more stubborn, so you can't always be the Dog Whisperer, you sometimes have to be the Dog Shouter). You will have to be very consistent and strict (I am a softie, so some of the hints were not good for me, because it should say "Get ready to be a Drill Sargent"). Jacks are very smart, tough, territorial (especially if female and with puppies, or male and there is a female in heat nearby, or just in general), (they can be aggressive, my 14 lb jack attached a 150 lb Rottweiler and had kicked his butt before we could get them apart) and you have to be prepared to keep them busy. Also be prepared for them to take forever to be potty trained (up to a year). Mine are now happy, so loving, and I am glad I had this book. We live in a Townhouse, and our dogs are loving it. They do get walked every morning, get busy games to play with and have a two hour play group every day so they get lots of diversion, which they absolutely require.
- I have previously owned a Collie, Golden Retriever, and a pound mutt - but no dog has been more fun than the Jack Russell we just got. He's 3 months old and this book explained his personality perfectly. It also went over all the neat little tricks required to get them to follow orders and act right! Well written book, easy to read & very useful.
- This is a very good book. A lifeline in a troubled sea of dog woes.

3 comments about How to Run a Dog Business: Putting Your Career Where Your Heart Is.
- This is another good book that I would recommend to those getting into this business. Good info and Ideas.
- I've been running a small dog training business for around 8 years now and after reading this book, have realized how many things I could be doing better. Her ideas are simple yet effective. This is a definite MUST READ if you're thinking of going into a dog related business or even if you're already in one!
- A professional dog-trainer, Veronica Boutelle is also the former Director of Behavior and Training at the San Francisco SPCA. In "How To Run A Dog Business: Putting Your Career Where Your Heart Is", she draws upon her many years of experience and expertise to show aspiring dog trainers wanting to start their own business how to analyze their market, set prices, and advertise their services; determine what licenses, insurance, and professional affiliations are needed; create systems that profitably streamline the business; and how to balance work demands with having a personal life. Exceptionally well written and superbly organized, "How To Run A Dog Business" is very highly recommended for aspiring professionals, as well as non-specialized general readers who enjoy the company and training of their canine companions.

5 comments about Stylish Knits for Dogs: 36 Projects to Knit in a Weekend.
- I've checked out this book twice from the public library, and decided it was worth it to purchase it for myself.
I've never knitted a dog sweater, and the basic pattern in this book is quite understandable, and easy to follow. Accurate, too.
Plus, you get patterns for people, such as a vest, and a sweater, and, I'm excited about using this book to make my first people sweater.
- I love this book..Dori the "grandpuppy" of one of my friends has too many sweaters to count. All made from the patterns in this book. The "Hoodie" is my favorite and she looked so cute in it. I get bored doing the same thing over and over so I improvised pattern stitches and did different things with them. Dori loved having them on for her walks or just laying around. Fun book and I had no problems with the patterns and was happy with each result.
- Some patterns are not accurate, looking at the picture. Page 48, the pattern is completely different than what is shown in the picture. I've been knitting for over 50 years, and this is the worst waste of $25.00 for a pattern book I have ever come across. I emailed the publisher, but have yet to hear back.
- This book is great! I have never made a sweater before. And totally understood the patterns and had excellent results for my little grandpuppy. Highly recommend this book. It's great fun.
- Thanks to this book I have the best dressed dogs in town. All four of them look great in thier fashionable sweaters. Easy to follow instruction, full color pictures, some mom and pup creations too. I leave it on my coffee table so others can look at it and admire the fun filled pages of "Stylish Knits for Dogs".

5 comments about Childproofing Your Dog: A Complete Guide to Preparing Your Dog for the Children in Your Life.
- I would love to review this book and tell you how great it is (many have told me so), but I never received it and I haven't had any action taken on the part of Amazon.com to get me the book. SO essentially I have paid for the product, not received it and Amazon is banking on their shipping error.
- Good commonsense, non nonsense advice that really just needed pointing out. Can be read before the baby/child joins the family or when introducing a dog to an existing family with children/infants.
- This book is a easy read with a lot of good advice, games, and training techniques that are perfect for anyone who has a dog and is introducing a baby to the dog or has a family and is introducing a new dog. It has been very helpful as I have been training my dog to respect my infant. It is a must read for parents!!
- It didn't take long for me to realize I could skim most of this book. I have a well behaved female boxer, and was looking for advice for preparing her for baby. Agree with the other review I read - didn't need 5 out of the 7 chapters since she is already well trained (no formal training was ever needed). Of the 2 chapters that might help, I won't actually know until after I have the baby. There's little advice for prepping your dog - much of it is advice for how to fix an existing or developed problem, not avoiding them altogether (like licking baby's face or eating diapers - no advice for how to avoid... just how to fix if you see it happen). Several chapters are for later years and "training" your kids - - I don't need that advice - i need to know how to PREP my dog for baby. Will definitely be looking for another more helpful book.
- This book is a must have for parents expecting their first child with a dog in the home. We have a very hyper and loveable lab mix mut. We were concerned that he would barrel over our child and destroy her toys. This book does a good job of training the dog owner on how to behave, and has great techniques to work with the dog before bringing baby home. Our baby is now 20 months old and loves her dog. He has never chewed on her toys or given us a reason to feel uncomfortable. Not to say he isn't still hyper, he is, but he knows to avoid her. She is able to love on him, take his toys, and pet him. He behaves beautifully. He always barrels through the back door, and she gets such a kick out of it that she stands in the middle of the doorway and lets him blow past her while she giggles at him. I have recommended this book to all of my friends with dogs that are expecting a new baby.

5 comments about Paddock Paradise: A Guide to Natural Horse Boarding.
- This book explains a really great idea for keeping horses, especially easy keepers and laminitis prone horses. The paddock paradise track system encourages horse to move around more than the alternatives of standing in a dry-lot or being out on pasture getting fat. Jaime Jackson bases all of the ideas he has for setting up your paddock paradise from his observations of the wild mustangs out west. Some of his suggestions seem a little out there, but even in it's most minimal form Paddock Paradise seems like a great options and is an interesting book for anyone looking for a healthier lifestyle for their horse.
- Don't get me wrong, I like the ideas presented in this book and intend to implement at least some of them when I set up my farm. But if you've read about Paddock Paradise on a website or in another book or have even been told about the general idea - save your money. It's interesting to learn about how Jackson came up with the idea and some of his suggestions I imagine will be helpful, but he admits in the book that there is very little data to support the ideas at the time he wrote it.
Personally I think he should have promotted his website more and waited to write the book until sufficient data was collected.
Oh, and I find his writing style pretentious and annoyingly academic at times. Just say what you mean, dude! Don't pick your words to make yourself sound smart and fancy!
- This book is very helpful in learning about the natural horse in its enviornment, and then it is good at developing what has been learned and applying it to a real life paddock. People with horses should definatly get this book to better their horses lives.
- Quality in depth instruction that helps owner to create a better living condition for their equine friend. Would recommend and have to anyone.
- I read this book when a friend recommended it, but she said "You'll want to buy one for yourself, I bet!" She was correct. It is a book to follow in setting up your horse pastures in such a way as to stimulate "natural" horse keeping! It will be a book that I will want to refer to more than once, as my project develops. I think it is a "must have" book for people who keep their horses at home!
