5 comments about Taking Risks with Watercolour.
- An internet search of images turned up several VERY intriguing still-lifes full of bright color swatches, lacy textures, and over-lapping objects in a style like absolutely no other artist on earth. Dang! Who's work IS this? Hmmmm! Shirley Trevena. Dig deeper and a plethora of utterly brilliant images, each one as exciting as the last - and I'm thinking, "I have GOT to learn more about this woman! Bought both of her books AND her DVD, and if she ever puts out anything else, I'll get that, too. Most artists are creative, but in usually in a rather traditional, safe sense. Not Trevena. Her work reflects both her knowledge of color and how it's supposed to work, of composition, shapes, lines --- all the elements of the accomplished artist, and then she breaks all the rules and STILL makes it work! Perhaps she has some intuitive, mystical sense about color choice, about playing pale colors against daring and dark hues, and expecially about composition. I don't know. But, if I could collect only one artist's work, I would fill my house with Trevena's. Taking risks, being outside-of-the-box creative is exactly what she has done - inspiring you to do the same. I have well over 100 art books now. Hers are my absolute favorites - the ones from which I've learned the most about taking risks, and feeling giddy with excitement when I'm able to take risks with my own paintings.
- This is a book for the daring... it goes beyond the typical information found in the average watercolor instruction book. Many, many good suggestions and ideas can be found.
- This is a wonderful book for any artist wanting to expand their horizons in w/c. The author is generous in giving concrete examples and techniques and also gives a step by step explanation as to how she created one of her paintings. As an art teacher I find this an exceptionally good book.
- I love this book and have read it from cover to cover. Shirley Trevena's paintings are thrilling to look at, the text is very readible and the layout keeps you turning the pages. I have been painting watercolours of flowers and still life for many years but Shirley Trevena shows me new ways to forge ahead, and fun ways to overcome some of the obstacles I have been facing in my work. Congratulations also to Albert Jackson and the other photographers for a truly excellent book. I look forward to the other book by Trevena.
- Although the title of the book refers to watercolour painting only, artists using other mediums will get inspiration as well.
Shirley Travena dives into the medium with enthusiasm (no tepid, sepia palette here!) incorporating watercolour with mixed media (including of all things, oil pastels and collage) using imagination, flair and ingenuity. The illustrations are vibrant; a feast for the eyes. While tonal values, composition, alignment and other basics are covered, they are presented in an innovative way. No boring lectures here.
The author shows a delightful candour - admitting how hesitant she was when first starting - and even daring to show some of her early works, on which she has since improved. But then she provides creative ways of overcoming problems, including the initial, daunting feeling of confronting a blank piece of paper or canvas. In addition to trouble-shooting, there are numerous ideas for achieving great effects with very simple techniques. Her use of masking tape to create different planes, for example, is very creative.
This is an experienced artist who nevertheless insists there is no 'right' way to create pictures, which is borne out by such headings as "Daring combinations" and "If a picture needs something, feel free to invent it." Whatever medium or style you use, doing some of the experiments and explorations in this book could well give a new lease of life to your paintings, as well as provide inspiration for new works of art.

5 comments about Canine Reproduction And Whelping: A Dog Breeder's Guide.
- If you have not had the opportunity to attend one of Myra's seminars, this is the next best thing. This book has a lot of hands on practical information. She has a simple matter of fact style of instruction. Her explanations and directions include easy too follow instructions. Very basic information,... the 'need to know' stuff. Not an expansive all inclusive text. Just the down to earth topics to get you through the moment.
- This book covers so much more that hasn't been covered in other popular breeding books. Well worth the investment.
- This is a good book but a first time breeder would be making a mistake to not discuss the whelping recommendations given here with their vet... use of Calsorb, in particular, but a few others. All dogs are individuals and one size does not fit all.
The companion book, Puppy Intensive Care, is also helpful and its DVD shows how to do sub Q IV and insert a feeding tube.
- This book is very through and covers all aspect of Canine Reproduction and whelping. The book is rather strait forward and makes for a good read on this topic. This book is for people who want to know more about Canine Reproduction and Whelping, and is a great addition for breeders. This is not the book for someone who clearly knows nothing on breeding and wants to find out if the dog they have is worth breeding. This gets at the mechanics and care of the Canine.
- Book is very helpful, answered a lot of questions I had and now feel pretty prepared for delivery of our first puppies..

5 comments about Teaching Your Bird to Talk.
- I was disappointed that it takes two people to teach the bird to talk. I won't be able to use the information in the book. It's a good book, just won't work for me.
- This book provides a wealth of information on birds but the title is a bit misleading. There is only one strong chapter on the "hows" of teaching a bird to talk with understanding rather than simple mimicry. The rest of the book details the funny things and the many things talking birds say(as reported by their owners), bird habits, nutrition, etc. I would have preferred a bit more in the tutorial section.
- I am not quite finished with this book yet, but I am very pleased with the information and how it is presented in this book. I have read several other books on Parrots and this is by far the best one. There is more information than just teaching your bird to talk.
I highly recomment this book to anyone who owns a parrot with the potential to talk!
- I waited more than six months after I bought this book to try the techniques inside it before I wrote my review. Although I was using some methods mentioned inside the book but this book encouraged me to keep using them and also adds some amazing methods and ideas that were very helpful, useful and easy to imply. Simply, my old African Grey Parrot started to talk, and that was my fist experience in such thing and I really feel grateful to this book and to the efforts inside it. I am giving four stars since I feel some information are ideas need proves rather than facts. However, aiming to make your African talk, buy this book and be patient.
- A wonderful reference and book guide for teaching a Quaker Parrot to talk.

5 comments about Better Food for Dogs: A Complete Cookbook and Nutrition Guide.
- The book is enjoyable to read and it is apparent that the authors have researched the topic and experimented with the results of following good diets for dogs. I would recommend the book.
- As someone who has cooked for my dog for years now I appreciate the simplicity of the recipes in this book and especially like that fact that the author occasionally shares a meal with his dog. The ingredients are not hard to find and even a dog with allergies can find good food between the pages.
- This book has several recipes in it for different weight dogs. Most of them have some sort of wheat and/or corn products in them. Any of you who are trying to feed your dog good food will know that many dog are allergic to wheat and corn. I tried one recipe for one serving for my 10 pound dog and it made so much that it fed my two 10 pound dogs and my 25 pound dog for 3 meals, and they didn't really like it to begin with.
- I liked the nutrition information in this book and the recipes have everything for a healthy dog. I found most of the recipes too complicated--I did not want to cook gourmet meals for my dogs. The recipes are for a specific weight. I have two dogs: 50 lbs and 100 lbs. It was hard to make one recipe for both. I took the ideas of the recipes and make my own. I tried taking the fresh veg/fruit in the blender and my dogs did not like it. I cook the fruit/veg together with meat and they look the food!
- I bought this book some time ago and use it often. I found it easy to use and very complete. Good recipes for the finicky eater and most importantly healthy for them!! This is not in the book but something to consider as to why we should feed our pets home cooked foods. Before the end of WW2 and the start of commercial dog foods, dogs where fed from the table eating most what we humans eat. Back then dogs lived well into their 20's. Now if they live to 10, 12 years it's concidered old!! Something to think about as we feed our dogs commercial foods and vaccinated the heck out of them!

5 comments about The Bearded Dragon Manual (Advanced Vivarium Systems).
- this book is loaded with useful and quality information. It includes all sucjects needed for maintaining a healthy dragon. it has all of the subjects from diet to habitat.
- I got this book after I got the dragon. I wish I had the book first. I found out I don't like the little buggers and gave the thing away to a friend with the book in tow. Book is well written and easy to read. It shows all the concerns a dragon owner should be aware of and proper care and maintenance. It might be a little outdated, with the new foods that are ready to eat that are produced for them. Also, not a lot on personalities, but I didn't expect much on that either.
- This book is an easy read that provides excellent information on the care of Bearded Dragons. Before you get your dragon, get this book! It could mean the difference between a happy healthy lizard and a dead one.
Already have a dragon? Get the book anyway. You could still learn some things that will make your pet's life better.
- I highly recommend this bearded dragon manual. It is far more detailed and accurate than all of the other bearded books I have bought off of here. It contains information that the other books have forgotten or intentionally excluded and I recommend this book to anyone whose looking for a book on how to take care of a bearded dragon properly.
- This is an excellent book for a Bearded Dragon beginner. Lots of helpful info. My son has been looking at it a lot since getting his beardie. It has answered most of his questions.

5 comments about Excel-Erated Learning: Explaining in Plain English How Dogs Learn and How Best to Teach Them.
- This book is for anyone who wishes to compete in obedience competition, become a pro dog trainer or has an interest in understanding the canine brain and how they learn. It's not for your average pet owner or first time dog owner. I enjoyed this book and it has made me a better trainer.
- I was very disappointed with this book. It is certainly not in plain English, focused way too much on theories and makes it not very approachable. I was hoping to find practical solutions, not some professor talk. To some extent I can only blame myself: only a PhD can write something like that and then put "plain English" in the title. Next time I will make sure I check the author's background first...
- This book is a must for anyone serious about training dogs. Scientific mumbo jumbo is streamlined for the rest of us.
- This has to be about the worse book I have ever attempted to read related to dog behavior. It is a difficult read in that it is mostly theoretical statements with absolutely no practical suggestions as how to approach and solve dog issues. I threw it in the trash about 5 minutes after I began browsing through it.
- Simply excellent. It explained in clear terms how and why many techniques work and where they might go wrong. As someone who competes in obedience regularly I would highly recommend giving this book a read.

5 comments about Of Women and Horses.
- I bought this book for my wife and daughter's and they enjoyed it very much, the way it was written and layed out.
- Fabulous book, I've bought it several times, makes a great gift for my horse loving friends and for myself.
- I bought this book as a gift for my youngest daughter who shares the love of horses with me. The photos are gorgeous. The essays of these horse women are beautifully written, full of imagery and delve into the spirit of women's connection with these magnificent animals. I highly recommend this book to collect and cherish.
- This book is a great book! The best one I have ever read. It makes you laugh, cry, everything. It was just an all around great book! I am really happy that GaWaNi Pony Boy made this amazing book about the connection of women and horses. Its nice to finally find a book and be able to read it and see that finally their are other women out there that understand the same relationships and love for horses as I do, I couldnt put it down. I HIGHLY reccomend this book to an one who LOVES horses!!
- It's about time, GaWaNi has done it again. I laughed, I cried and felt deeply for many of the women in this incredible book. I first heard about it when I saw him on Larry King Live with Bo Derek, Terry Ventura and Chaia King (the latter two are actually in the book) and thought it might be an interesting read.....I have this on my coffee table and come back to it time and time again. What's nice about the format of this book is you can read one or two of the essays, and come back to it later - a very convenient read, and nice to go with whatever mood I happen to be in - (and ladies, we know we have many) you will find a story to go with every one!
I've had several friends try to make off with it - but told them to get their own! Beautiful artwork and a gorgeous layout make this pleasing to the eye, and the thoughts and words will move your heart.
I heard a rumor that he's put out another one, can't wait!

5 comments about Childproofing Your Dog: A Complete Guide to Preparing Your Dog for the Children in Your Life.
- I would love to review this book and tell you how great it is (many have told me so), but I never received it and I haven't had any action taken on the part of Amazon.com to get me the book. SO essentially I have paid for the product, not received it and Amazon is banking on their shipping error.
- Good commonsense, non nonsense advice that really just needed pointing out. Can be read before the baby/child joins the family or when introducing a dog to an existing family with children/infants.
- This book is a easy read with a lot of good advice, games, and training techniques that are perfect for anyone who has a dog and is introducing a baby to the dog or has a family and is introducing a new dog. It has been very helpful as I have been training my dog to respect my infant. It is a must read for parents!!
- It didn't take long for me to realize I could skim most of this book. I have a well behaved female boxer, and was looking for advice for preparing her for baby. Agree with the other review I read - didn't need 5 out of the 7 chapters since she is already well trained (no formal training was ever needed). Of the 2 chapters that might help, I won't actually know until after I have the baby. There's little advice for prepping your dog - much of it is advice for how to fix an existing or developed problem, not avoiding them altogether (like licking baby's face or eating diapers - no advice for how to avoid... just how to fix if you see it happen). Several chapters are for later years and "training" your kids - - I don't need that advice - i need to know how to PREP my dog for baby. Will definitely be looking for another more helpful book.
- This book is a must have for parents expecting their first child with a dog in the home. We have a very hyper and loveable lab mix mut. We were concerned that he would barrel over our child and destroy her toys. This book does a good job of training the dog owner on how to behave, and has great techniques to work with the dog before bringing baby home. Our baby is now 20 months old and loves her dog. He has never chewed on her toys or given us a reason to feel uncomfortable. Not to say he isn't still hyper, he is, but he knows to avoid her. She is able to love on him, take his toys, and pet him. He behaves beautifully. He always barrels through the back door, and she gets such a kick out of it that she stands in the middle of the doorway and lets him blow past her while she giggles at him. I have recommended this book to all of my friends with dogs that are expecting a new baby.

3 comments about A Lion Called Christian: The True Story of the Remarkable Bond between Two Friends and a Lion.
- [...]
I have an original copy of this book, A Lion Called Christian. It is a hardcover book.
This book recounts the experiences of two men who owned a London boutique, bought a lion cub to try to attract customers to the store, and when the lion outgrew their ability to responsibly maintain him, they took responsibility for his future by taking him to George Adamson in Kenya to be rehabilitated to the wild.
George Adamson was the ex-husband of Joy Adamson, author of the famous Born Free books. They were the pioneers of the practice of successfully rehabilitating captive animals to the wild.
The story is excellent and is attracting new interest today because of videos on youtube, of the reunion of the owners and Christian after Christian was living as a fully rehabilitated wild lion.
This story is the epitome example of people taking full responsibility for the welfare and future of the big cat they bought as a pet, when that cat outgrew their facilities and resources to keep him adequately for his needs.
It is a beautiful moving story and also shows just how much loyalty and love that animals can have toward humans who genuinely care about them and relate to the animals in positive fair ways that the animals understand.
- i understand john rendall wrote a book about his raising christian the lion in 07 or 08,
the title may be " christian the lion who lives in my london living room "?
can't find it anywhre.
help ?!!!!!!!!
- I am trying to find the original book called christian the Lion written by John Rendall and Tony Bourke.

5 comments about The Stone Guide to Dog Grooming for All Breeds.
- This is a very good quality book with lots of helpful information. It could have had a few more illustrations to help with the grooming process, but is very helpful overall.
- This is a good guide for traditional cuts. It gives enough information to get the haircut done. Some of the info is a little outdated, but overall it's one of the books I've used as my "bible". It's definitely a book that should be in every groomer's library.
- This is a very excellent informative book on how to groom. I highly reccomend it!
- NICE BOOK IF YOU ONLY NEED TO LEARN HOW TO BATHE, TRIM EARS OR CLIP NAILS. DOESNT TELL YOU WHAT SIZE ATTACHMENTS TO USE OR WHAT PART OF THE BODY TO USE THE DIFFERENT ATTACHMENTS.ITS BETTER IF YOU HAVE A POODLE, MORE PAGES DEVOTED TO IT. ONLY ONE PER OTHER DOG!
- IF you need a book to learn how to start Kennel clipping, do not buy this one.
IF you want to be a groomer in a city and work in someone else's shop then go for it.
I do strip clips and summer clips so this book was not very helpful to me in that area.
