5 comments about Better Food for Dogs: A Complete Cookbook and Nutrition Guide.
- The book is enjoyable to read and it is apparent that the authors have researched the topic and experimented with the results of following good diets for dogs. I would recommend the book.
- As someone who has cooked for my dog for years now I appreciate the simplicity of the recipes in this book and especially like that fact that the author occasionally shares a meal with his dog. The ingredients are not hard to find and even a dog with allergies can find good food between the pages.
- This book has several recipes in it for different weight dogs. Most of them have some sort of wheat and/or corn products in them. Any of you who are trying to feed your dog good food will know that many dog are allergic to wheat and corn. I tried one recipe for one serving for my 10 pound dog and it made so much that it fed my two 10 pound dogs and my 25 pound dog for 3 meals, and they didn't really like it to begin with.
- I liked the nutrition information in this book and the recipes have everything for a healthy dog. I found most of the recipes too complicated--I did not want to cook gourmet meals for my dogs. The recipes are for a specific weight. I have two dogs: 50 lbs and 100 lbs. It was hard to make one recipe for both. I took the ideas of the recipes and make my own. I tried taking the fresh veg/fruit in the blender and my dogs did not like it. I cook the fruit/veg together with meat and they look the food!
- I bought this book some time ago and use it often. I found it easy to use and very complete. Good recipes for the finicky eater and most importantly healthy for them!! This is not in the book but something to consider as to why we should feed our pets home cooked foods. Before the end of WW2 and the start of commercial dog foods, dogs where fed from the table eating most what we humans eat. Back then dogs lived well into their 20's. Now if they live to 10, 12 years it's concidered old!! Something to think about as we feed our dogs commercial foods and vaccinated the heck out of them!

5 comments about Mapping Trophy Bucks.
- This book could be a textbook for a master's degree in whitetail hunting. If it were, its course description would read something like this: "How to use topographic maps, aerial photos and plat books to develop a terrain strategy, giving consideration to wind and approach avenues, to find and predict when to use high-percentage stands for harvesting mature whitetail deer in forest and farmland." Since a master's degree in hunting mature whitetails isn't available, you can do no better than immerse yourself in this book.
According to the author, hunting mature bucks is all about terrain strategy and wind. If you don't handle these two things correctly, your success may be dependent on nothing more reliable than luck. He gives plenty of information, including case studies, to demonstrate how these two things interact and how you can use them to your advantage.
For about the price of a box of shells, Mapping Trophy Whitetails might be your best resource for positioning yourself within bow or gun range of a mature buck. Whether you're a trophy hunter or not, deer hunting is now more challenging than ever and the lessons here will aid your success.
- THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE READ ON HOW TO AND WHERE TO HUNT BUCKS.
IF YOU CAN'T LEARN FROM THIS BOOK THAN YOUR EGO HAS GOTTEN IN THE WAY, BECAUSE I DON'T CARE IF YOUR A NOVICE OR SEASONED HUNTER YOU CAN DIFFENTLY PICK UP TACTICS ON WHERE TO HUNT IN THE WOODS BY READING THIS BOOK. A MUST HAVE IN YOUR COLLECTION
- As a recently new hunter I found this book to contain quite a variety of useful information on using maps as they relate to whitetails. I wish there weren't so many full page pictures or stores about the author's hunts but all in all I am satisfied with my purchase.
- We run a hunting education program in Arizona called the Arizona Hunting Club. We recently built an online Arizona hunting workbook that teaches new hunters how to hunt. In compiling this workbook, we researched a lot of hunting books. Most of them give a lot of personal hunting tales on the way an individual hunts. This book way was completely different. It tells you exactly how to pin point where animals will be eating, drinking and sleeping. If you want to learn how to hunt animals and predict where to find them in the woods, this is by far the BEST HUNTING BOOK you will every buy. And while it is written about deer hunting, the same exact principles work great for hunting elk in our home state, Arizona. NO we dont work for them, but we did include a ton of their material in our hunting workshops. You should definitely include this book if you want to learn how to become a successful hunter.
- I've hunted since the 60's. I got serious about Whitetails around 92'.
I talk to a lot of hunters and read a lot of books and watch videos and spend as much time as possible in the woods. Mr. Herndon's book has started to make everything gel in my mind.
As I read and think about this book I keep going over successful hunts I've had. Now, I am able to determine why they were successful and focus on more success in the future by using the stratagies discussed in this book.
There is no replacement for time in the woods and experience. But this book will definitely introduce structure and logic, to where and how to hunt instead of just instinct.
What I love about deer hunting is there is always something new to learn. And, of course, the adrenaline rush. Deer and especially Trophy bucks just aren't always predictable, too many variables, but this book will help organize all of your whitetail wisdom.

5 comments about A PocketExpert Guide to Marine Invertebrates: 500+ Essential-to-Know Aquarium Species.
- This is an excellent quick guide to help you making your invertebrates "wish list", and also very helpful to carry it when going shopping for new inverts. Each page provides a picture and useful information about the portrayed invertebrate, compatibility with fishes and other inverts, etc.
It could be a little better if the author gave a score from 1 to 5 like the author from "A PocketExpert Guide to Marine Fishes" did. Also, a better clarification on light levels would be important. Just saying "bright", "medium", etc isn't enough for a beginner like myself.
- clear, well done and with clear explanations....Since invertebrates can be very hard to identify, specifically corals, this book takes a lot of the guess work out of it.
- This book has it all when looking for invertebrate information. When looking to learn about corals, starfish, or anything else that is not a fish this book will be a great resource. With its compact size you can take it to the fish store and have an unbiased source of information you can count on.
- A necessary reference for Reef Keepers! Unfortunately as the title says it only covers 500 marine invertebrates! Dr. Shimek offers great information and recommendations!
- Excellent for anyone who has a saltwater fish tank. I've had fish tanks for 20 years and wish I had this resource to let me know in advance what requirements certain fish, corals and invertebrates have as far as size of tank, salinity, etc...which corals/invertebrates are easy to keep and which require way more than I could hope to provide. This is a must have.

5 comments about Puppy Training for Kids.
- In my humble opinion... when you title a book "Puppy Training for Kids" it should be written on the level for which the audience is intended. This book is way too complex and dull for children. It has a lot of information in it and is not presented in the best manner. Kids need to be educated in a way that makes it interesting to them. This book made my daughter feel like she was in school. Writing a book and putting photos of kids with dogs does not constitute "Puppy Training for Kids" in my book. It should of been titled "Mommy Please Read This Book and Tell Me How To Train My Puppy" sorry folks
- This book was purchased for a friend who has a son, age 12. She just got a dog but was contemplating the pound because the dog was more active than she could deal with. With the help of the book her son was able to teach the dog to sit in just a little over a week. Considering his age and the fact that he has no "dog training experience" I think that was a fairly good accomplishment for both him and the dog. The book was worth every penny.
- I never did read of the this book. I just skimmed over it. I bought it for my son whom devoured it rather quickly (considering he just got a new puppy). He keeps telling me tips from the book; some that I knew and other ones that were new. So yes, it is a great read for children who have just gotten a new puppy or close to getting one.
- As preparation for a puppy for our 10-year-old son, we had him commit to reading this book first. Each night he read alone, and then we read together. It was not only informative, easy to read and follow, but a great shared time as well! It was the perfect "first" book to introduce our son into the upcoming responsibilities of having a dog. I also realized how neglectful I was in raising our now adult Labrador, and how much I want to re-train her with our son's puppy, too!
- If you have a puppy or young dog, this book is great for your kids who want to help train it. It has great pictures and some neat tricks for the dog to learn.

5 comments about A PocketExpert Guide to Marine Fishes: 500+ Essential-To-Know Aquarium Species.
- This is an excellent quick guide to help you learning more about salt water fishes. It not only helps you deciding what fishes you want next but is also a very helpful guide to carry when shopping for new fishes. You can easily identify fishes that you don't know, with a scale with 1 to 5 on how hard it is to have it at home and compatibility with other fishes and invertebrates.
The highlight of this book, in my opinion, is showing pictures of Angelfishes when they are both young and adults, as their pattern change completely.
- This book is great for when you want all the basic facts on a potential fish tankmate right there at your fingertips. Quick to find what you need, and very to-the-point. Great handy guide.
- If you have a salt water aquarium, this is the one book you must have.
- If you need a quick, comprehensive marine fish reference book this is the one to get. It is small enough to bring with you to the fish store and get a quick rundown on behaviors, ease of keeping, etc.
If you ask the fish store about a fish, they are probably looking in this book for the answer.
- This is a must have book for the novice to choose which fish are right for your tank

5 comments about Choosing and Keeping Chickens.
- I really love the layout and color of this book. But some of the info is just plain crazy -- like the overly complex method the author suggests when using a broody hen. That's the whole point of USING a broody -- making it simple -- mama does the work. Their instructions are just nutty on it.
A lot of the more interesting breeds were not listed, like Araucana and Ameraucana.
Several photos were very obviously mislabeled as hens when they were very much roosters.
But overall a nice book for beginner-to-intermediate poultry hobbyists.
- This book has really great information about the many different breeds of chicken and answers many questions, such as:
-Which breeds are gentle and docile/best for children?
-Which breeds are aggressive or avoid humans?
-Which are noisy or quiet?
-Best or poor layers?
-Difficult to breed?
-Have special husbandry requirements (fencing, footing, housing, etc.)?
This is a great book for those new to chickens or those considering a new breed. As we all know, "you can't judge a book by its cover"-- the same idea applies to chickens! This book can help families avoid choosing a breed for the wrong reasons (and thus avoid a negative experience with chickens). It also helps those new to chickens understand that not all breeds can live under the same conditions-- e.g. while some are happy in relative confinement, others will harm each other or be miserable when in close confinement and need to be allowed to range freely. Some chickens are cold-hardy while others are not suited to freezing winters. Etc. etc.!
This book can help families find what they are looking for (a friendly pet, a great layer, a hen that will be happy being confined, etc.) in an interesting and appropriate breed.
- Nice overview and great photography of the different chicken breeds. Has details on how chickens produce for eggs, meat of show.
- This is my second favorite chicken book. Great basic info. on setting up for chickens, keeping them, and, most importantly, on what breeds are best for your particular needs/desires. Nice photos, and good descriptions. Unfortunately, it is a British book, so it doesn't include a few American breeds I wanted to read about, but that's a pretty minor fault... All in all, a very concise, useful book.
- I love the book the photos are great and I found the information helpful. I would recommend this book the first time chicken owner or someone who has then for a while.

5 comments about Training Your Beagle (Training Your Dog Series).
- This is an amazing book. In a short time you can change your beagle behavior. But you need patience and a lot of love for yor Beagle.
- This book is very helpful in learning about Beagles. Buy the book before the puppy. Information was very helpful in training my puppies.
- this book definately helped me to understand my pup. i was able to teach him to shake in just one ten minute session. but it does lack on more extensive tricks and training. but i love the different games it recommends.
- This book started off to be very helpful, but then we don't plan on showing our beagle, so a lot of the chapters weren't geared for our purposes. But again, this is just our opinion. Good reading.
- This book has been an absolute Godsend! We just got Baxter 3 and 1/2 weeks ago, he's now almost 12 weeks old and neither myself or my husband have had a dog since we were children. So we were clueless!
We're doing everything the author says to do regarding housetraining, crate training, etc. and it is working wonderfully. We purchased a few other books as well, but this one is proving to be the most helpful by far.
Kristine Kraeuter is the Beagle Pro and other reviews that I read about this book prompted me to buy it and I am elated I did.
Thank you so much! If anyone who is considering a Beagle puppy, this book is for you!

5 comments about The Simple Guide to Fresh Water Aquariums (Simple Guide to...).
- This book was very easy to read and use. The index was consise and contained the major headings needed.
- This book does have some basic information--but that information is dangerously incomplete.
The thing I disliked the most about it was that the author makes a great effort--over and over--to stress that the reader is a mere beginner and knows nothing compared to experts like himself. His condescending tone is both insulting and annoying.
That wouldn't be so bad, if he then went on to educate us (the purpose, I foolishly assumed, for which this book was written). No such luck. In almost every section, we're told that we should leave the complex stuff to the experts. Case in point: He tells us the signs and symptoms of disease--but then refuses to tell us how to treat them. Instead, you're lectured that if you follow instructions you won't have any of those problems to begin with and that treating diseases is for experts. Uh...yeah. So, something does go wrong and one of your fish is being eaten alive by some parasite or fungus, you're supposed to just let it die rather than try to treat it. And then, I guess you're supposed to dump the entire tank and start over from scratch--though, of course, the book doesn't tell you how to rid an old tank and its contents of such nasties.
And, where some sections lack important information, others are pedantic, so full of minute detail that makes this book inclusion in a series of books called "Simple Guides" laughable. It felt to me that the author simply likes to demonstrate his vast knowledge to what he hopes will be a suitably awed and humbled audience.
I usually give away books I no longer want, but not this one. I've thrown three books in the trash my entire life. This was one of them.
- This book could be a good tool if it was organized a little bit. I found it difficult to locate the information I was looking for from the index. If you have the time to read it as you would a novel, you might find useful information. If, like me, you need a guide to setting up a fresh-water aquarium and some info on fish and plants, it is a little too scattered in various sections that didn't make much sense to me...
- This book is an outstanding and easy to read resource for anyone who is interested in setting up an aquarium. I read it cover to cover. I often refer to it as "my fish Bible"! I have lent this book to friends who were troubleshooting common aquarium problems, and they too have found it to be extremely useful.
The goal of the book is to give you a wealth of information BEFORE you buy your tank and your fish. It will help you to not make common mistakes. However, this book is a great resource or "refresher course" for those already interested and involved in the fishkeeping hobby.
This book is an overview on the main setup of a freshwater tank. While it does go into individual species a bit, you may want to get more specific and specialized books about the species you are interested in. The parts about individual species are not very in-depth.
Overall -- this is a fantastic resource, and your fish will thank you for getting this book!
Good luck, and happy fishkeeping!
- I purchased this a couple years ago after having been out of the Aquarium hobby for several years and then deciding to get back in again. I found it to be very informative, building on what I learned 20-30 years ago and outlining many considerations that, today, are common knowledge in the hobby, but was unkown by the average aquarist of the 70s & 80s.
Very good book to read before you add fish to your new aquarium!

5 comments about Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies.
- Solid book, but nothing I really didn't find on the internet. I guess you can either buy this book or just search online for a good hour or two on dogs and yorkies.
- This book got a lot of great reviews and I tend to like the "Dummies" books. It did follow the traditional format the Dummy books are known for and it was informative and helpful. However, the lack of two stars are for what seemed to be the lean towards AKC snobbery. Come on, a pet Yorkie should never be bred because she isn't show quality? We are getting our Yorkie because we want her to be loved and a member of our family; but this book seemed to written for those who have an allegiance to the AKC and only own Yorkies for strutting in shows. By the way, there are other organizations to register a Yorkie with than the AKC!!
May I recommend the Animal Planet Yorkshire Terriers book instead?.
- This book is great. I bought it after already having Logan. I wish I would have bought it before hand. Lots of great info and they are pretty much bang on for everything they say. Please buy this book before buying your Yorkie... it does make life easier.
- This book really helped me decide if I wanted to get a Yorkie. I felt it didn't sugar coat them and made them feel real.
- I cannot believe there is no chapter on biting as a puppy. It is a thoroughly obnoxious habit--thought this book would have had some words of wisdom.
