1 comments about Quotable Spurrier: The Nerve, Verve, and Victorious Words of and about Steve Spurrier, America's Most Scrutinized Football Coach (Potent Quotables).

  1. If you love Steve Spurrier, you'll love this collection of hundreds of his quotes. If you hate Spurrier, you'll still love the book as it gives you ammo to yell back at. If you're not in either of these categories of people, then you might want to check and see if you're still alive. This is Spurrier in a nutshell, and it's a beautiful book.

5 comments about Brian Piccolo: A Short Season.

  1. This book is the basis for the fantastic movie 'Brian's Song', about Brian Piccolo and his battle with cancer and his friendship with Gale Sayers. Jeannie Morris was the wife of Johnny Morris, a teammate of Brian Piccolo's. She does a splendid job of balancing the football aspect, with the friendship part, with the cancer battle.
This is the story of love, of enduring, of battling. Morris tells it all in heart-warming and heart-breaking detail.
I have never met anyone who was able to watch 'Brian's Song' without crying and this book has the same effect.

  2. This book enables the reader to empathize for Brian. He was a pro football player who battled with cancer at a time when there wasn't a lot known about cancer. Even if you don't like football you can appreciate the book for what it is. It is good for lots of ages as well. The book is good about explaining what was known about cancer at the time. It includes medical analysis of his hospital visits as well as interactions with his family and teammates.

  3. This book was great, althouhg Brian had a short seson he did much with his life and the story of his firendship with Gal Sayers was great. I loved the movie, Brians song, the book, I am Third, and this book, A short Seson. Every1 should buy this book. i find his life very important on reading about.

  4. Brian Piccolo: A Short Season was marvelously written by Brian's close friend, Jeannie Morris. This book gives the readers a detailed view into his existence while still being discrete enough for the Piccolo family to remain happy with the biography/autobiography. Chicago Bears running back Brian Piccolo lived to be only 26 years of age, dying on June 16, 1970, from liver cancer. While his stay on this Earth was a brief and trying one, Piccolo made it count every single day. His story is of highs and lows, heroics and disappointments, comedy and despair, and, ultimately, tragedy. However, Piccolo lived his life ideally, paying tributes to various foundations while enjoying and loving life to the fullest. The book includes the entirety of this great man's life, from his young baseball-playing childhood to his record-setting career at Wake Forest College to his last days as a father, husband, and Chicago Bear. Piccolo was a spirit-lifting person among those he spent time with, before and after he was diagnosed with the fatal cancerous disease. His charm and wit grabbed his fellow players, his coaches, and, most importantly, the general public. While `Pic' started only a handful of games for the Bears, he rarely if ever complained despite a burning desire to play the game he loved so dearly. Piccolo was a favorite among Chicago Bears fans, and although he backed up the legendary Gale Sayers, his team-first attitude and love for the game kept him afloat until that day when the prospect of a lifetime would arise and give him the opportunity to start. Even on his deathbed, Piccolo never gave up his hope for a miraculous recovery and return to the football field. After all, Brian Piccolo's heart was never the question; it was his liver which was diagnosed with cancer. Former Bears-teammate and close friend Johnny Morris summed up Pic's life in the foreword, remarking "Brian Piccolo made it to the top at 26."

  5. jan/10/01 I am also an athlete who has suffered many career threating injuries. Unlike Brian Piccalo i do not have a terminal disease. I can understand his determination of never wanting to quit playing the game no matter how bad he felt or how bad the news was. This goes to show one how great mind over matter really is. This book also reflects how important frienship and family really are, who will stand by you when the chips all come falling down.

I recommend this book to any athlete who suffers an injury or illness that causes one to be removed from the game. One cannot ever forget where they came from , how many lives they have touched, and who you can rely on .. Death plays a big issue in this book although it is depressing you know with cancer it is coming Brian piccalo also shares his love of the game and his friends and family.

I am too young to remember Brian Piccalo he died before i was born, he wasn't an outstanding player, no super bowl hero, just an average good athlete like me.

In books like these his memory doesn't die, but his life will be remembered in books.

1 comments about In His Shadow: Growing Up with Reggie White.

  1. Seemed like a truthful account of life with Reggie. I was surprised at some of the things Jeremy revealed about how extreme his father's beliefs had evolved. Jeremy wrote from his heart. The book brought back many memories of the White's as they "passed through" the Philadephia area.

  2. When my son and his friend sat down to this book, I couldn't tear it away from them! They kept looking at the vivid pictures and reading over and over the text. They were really transfixed. I can't say how quiet the house was for about a half of an hour. They loved it!

5 comments about The Emmitt Zone.

  1. I REALLY ENJOYED THIS BOOK BY EMMITT SMITH FORMER DALLAS COWBOY. THIS WAS WRITTEN BY EMMITT VERY EARLY IN HIS CAREER. ALONG THE WAY HE TELLS US OF HIS BOYHOOD IN FLORIDA AND FROM THERE TO HIS COLLEGE CAREER AT FLORIDA. EMMITT DOES A GOOD JOB TELLING HIS STORY AND IT REALLY GETS INTERESTING WHEN HE GETS TO HIS TIME WITH THE COWBOYS. FROM THERE, EMMITT WOULD BECOME THE ALL TIME LEADING RUSHER IN NFL HISTORY ALONG WITH INDUCTION TO THE HALL OF FAME AND TO WIN 3 SUPER BOWLS. JUST AN AMAZING CAREER. JUST A FEW YEARS AGO, HE ALSO WAS THE WINNER ON THAT NAUSIATING SHOW DANCING WITH THE STARS. I RECOMMEND THIS FOR ALL FOOTBALL FANS.

  2. excellent book. very open and honest. inspiring, but boring in parts

  3. If you are into sports books then The Emmitt Zone is a great sports book to read. It is probably one of the greatest sports books i have ever read. In this book Emmitt talks about football being a contact sport and discribes the sport of football. He tells you some records about some players that play in the NFL. He also tells you about his College Football and National Football career and records. Then finally Emmitt talks about his life style when he was grewing up from a little boy to a Football Star.

  4. As a Cowboys fan for over 20 years, I really loved this book. It's a great portrait of a great running back and a role model we should all emulate. My only criticism is that it was written a bit early in his career - the book doesn't cover a great deal of events that readers are sure to want to hear about, such as Super Bowl XXX, Michael Irvin's retirement, Troy Aikman's retirement, the rushing title, etc. But, I still recommend the book highly for Cowboy fans who want to smile and remember the early 1990s, when Dallas established itself as one of the most dominant football teams ever.

  5. Emmitt Smith has gone through many ups and downs in his career. Some of include three Super Bowl titles and a rushing record. Some of the downs include living in the projects and having a semi-rough childhood. Emmitt grew up in Pensacola, Florida. He lived in the projects for a few years. Emmitt had a very large immediate family; all of them were very close and helped Emmitt through a lot. Emmitt attended the University of Florida for college, where he broke numerous rushing records. Emmitt was the Dallas Cowboys' first round Draft pick in 1990. In the NFL Emmitt Smith is one of the premier players.
This autobiography gives a great insight to life. Emmitt Smith really did a great job writing this novel. This book gives you a good look at the NFL - from the top. I recommended this book to anyone who wants to read a warming story about someone who worked hard to get where he is today.

5 comments about In Control: The Rebirth of an NFL Legend.

  1. Thomas Henderson tells it straight up . If you want to know how a man can right himself after falling from grace then you need to read this book . From the top of the mountain , fame , money , prestige , all pro line backer with the Cowboys to a destitute , strung out crack head . Want to learn how this man dealt with his demons ? He takes one day at a time , just like the rest of us . But Thomas makes a pledge to take one day at a time " sober " . It's an option , you gotta suit up every day !

God bless you Thomas . Keep fighting the good fight

  2. I Really enjoyed reading In Control, Years ago I read Thomas's other book Out of Control and while I enjoyed it also. This one is different -- his first one told how he got sober, but this new one tells HOW TO STAY SOBER!!! While he tells us how to stay sober he also entertains the heck out of the reader. It is a book I am going to find myself rereading every couple years or so, and there are not very many books that are like that for me.

  3. This book really made me re-think about my sobriety.Thomas Henderson helped me understand better about the 12-steps.About being able to better my life while dealing with my addictions.I really recommend this book for anybody who is going through a recovery process or knows somebody who is,to help them understand what that person is going through in their head.

  4. I just spent the weekend reading this book and couldn't put it down.

Thomas Henderson has written a book about addiction and recovery, but his message is actually a universal statement of how to identify challenges, find solutions, produce results and to live a more meaningful life. I think its message has meaning to everyone.

If you (or a family member, friend, or associate) is challenged by addiction, you will learn and find inspiration.

If you are concerned about public policy issues and the burdens of our criminal justice system, you should read this book to understand more about addiction as a foundational problem that produces crime and recidivism.

If you are the leader of a company, of your household, of your kids, or of your peers, this book has important messages that can help you look at problems differently, consider new solutions, and to make better decisions.

While the narrative involves the recovery of Thomas Henderson, reading this book will help you be a more effective CEO, a better parent, or a more enlightened leader. Every thinking adult should read this book.

  5. This book is the straightforward, easy to read, incredible story of one mans trip to hell and back. Cowboy fans and anyone interested in reading a testimony to the human spirit will enjoy In Control. It is also an excellent heads-up to anyone thinking of dabbling in the world of alcohol and drugs. For those who can identify with Thomases plight, it is an excellent companion to the Big Book of A.A. For those who cant, let it serve as a warning to any who think addiction is a problem "other people" have to worry about.

5 comments about Diary of a Husker.

  1. I am not all the way through this book yet, but so far it has been very interesting. Coming from a person who is not a big reader, it has definitely kept me interested whenever I get a chance to read at night. It is not the best-written book I have ever seen, which makes sense being a diary of a college football player, but as a die-hard Husker fan, it's very intriguing to see all of the behind-the-scenes accounts that I never knew about.

  2. I enjoyed this book. I have 2 nephews entering college in the athletics program - this was eye popping and interesting. I met the author at a bookstore months ago and just finished the book (I don't have much time for reading, but I do try). I felt like this was a glimpse into the life of a football player, I cried a couple of times, laughed quite a few times and generally enjoyed a very nice read. Thanks for this unique look into the strange world of college football. I'll give this book to my dad, a lifelong Cornhusker fan.

  3. Redshirt long snapper Dave Kolowski's Diary of a Husker is one man's chronicle of what life was like in the hectic world of collegiate football. Beginning with the winter of his high school senior year, Kolowski walks us through the process of how he got into the Husker program as a Red Shirt, and, over time, he chronicles his rise to a starter.

This did not give us any real insight into the raw emotions of what a player must feel. Gary Shaw's expose' of Texas Longhorns football "Meat on the Hoof" although written in the spirit of bitterness, did give the reader a better vantage point of what life was like on the inside. Kolowski's narrative was, at times, sterile and somewhat juvenile. His random parenthetical explanations were a little more insightful than his journal entries. Otherwise the book wound up being a C- work in the end.

  4. David Kolowski breaks new ground with this book, not really a sports book, not even really a football book, but a book that looks into the life of a young man faced with the challenges and potential glories of big-time college football. This was obviously written while in the thick of the action, in the heat of the moment and David's reporting of the days events quickly evolve into a behind-the-scenes introspective that strips the seemingly hubristic facade off of Husker football and shows fans what really happened during these five up and down years, directly from the perspective of a player. This unique look into the glory, the pain, the pride, and the sacrifices that these young men face is a must read for every fan, every player, every coach, and every parent.

  5. I bought this book hoping to get a unique insiders insight into some of the major issues happening during a topsy turvy time in Husker Football. What I got was many items that were very lightly covered and some hot topics which were not even mentioned at all. A perfect example is the quarterback controversy between Eric Crouch and Bobby Newcombe that was only mentioned in the Forward by Crouch where he makes a half-hearted effort at patting himself on the back. The diary did provide a glimpse into the life of the average non-scholarship Husker football player. For this reason I gave the book a 3-star, however I feel the author missed several chances to provide an in-depth and cutting edge look at a team in turmoil. Reading the book you learn more about the per-diem paid to the athletes and what kind of meals they ate but less about more pertinent topics. I feel the author was afraid to bring real issues to the forefront.

4 comments about Mean on Sunday: The Autobiography of Ray Nitschke.

  1. Ray Nitschke is arguably the greatest middle linebacker to play football, but people often forget what a great man he was. Honest, caring, and a passionate about football are only a few ways to describe him. Originally penned in 1973, immediately after his playing days, "Mean on Sunday" is an all too concise memoir of his life through his playing days.

The Green Bay Packers of the 1960's were one of the great football dynasties, if not the greatest. Nitschke was a central figure of those teams. From his rough childhood as an orphan to his college playing days at the University of Illinois where he dreamed of playing for the Bears, he is forthcoming in his storytelling. The tales of the Lombardi championship teams are classic, and have served as a source for other works. Yet when he begins telling of his playing days, I feel that he holds something back.

As far as content, "Nitschke" by Edward Gruver is more thorough because of the inclusion of Nitschke's later years. Also, in his memoir, Nitschke never admits to the physical discomfort he endured in his final years. He was too proud to make excuses for his limitations, embodying the toughness Lombardi expected while always being a good man.

  2. It's almost hard to believe that the same man who terrorized NFL offenses in the 60s could be the nice guy that this book makes him appear to be. Ray Nitschke was truly a class act. He might have enjoyed crushing an opposing quarterback, but off the field he was set a great example as someone who cared deeply for his family, friends and teammates. Although he had a rough start in life, he learned early that he wanted a life he could be proud of, and where he could be an example for others. I never expected this book to be inspiring when I bought it, but it certainly is.

  3. THIS BOOK IS VERY INTERESTING, WELL WRITTEN, AND DONE WITH HONESTY. RAY'S TEAM ATTITUDE AND WORK ETHICS ARE A BREATH OF FRESH AIR. HE WAS A BUTT KICKER AND A FORCE IN THE NFL. THIS IS A MUST READ FOR ALL FOOTBALL FANS. TO GET A REAL GOOD LOOK AT HOW FOOTBALL SHOULD BE PLAYED READ THIS. ONE HELLUVA GOOD READ.
    VERY RECOMMENDED.

  4. Ray Nitschke gives great insight into the human side of professional football. Takes readers on a great journey, from being orphaned as child, to success with the Fighting Illini, and finally to near immortal status as a member of The Green Bay Packers. Definitely not your typical pro-athlete memoirs.

2 comments about Forever a Chief: Derrick Thomas, Always Giving Back.

  1. "Forever a Chief" is the only book dedicated to the life and career of Kansas City Chief Linebacker Derrick Thomas that I am aware of.

This book consists of quotes from Mr. Thomas and NFL players and coaches, some full page action photos,(there are a few photos of D.T. in uniform for his last game) and career achievements from both on and off the field.

"On the field accolades are great, but in order to reach your full potential, you have to overstep the boundaries of football and go out into the community and be an All-Pro there too." -Derrick Thomas.
A large part of his legacy is his involvement in the community and especially with the youth.

In an NFL career that was too short, the late Derrick Thomas achieved the single-game sack record, impacted the outcome of games with his K.C. Strip (sack and chop)technique, and put up fantastic sack totals at Alabama.

Derrick Thomas set up the Third and Long Foundation and some of the proceeds from the sale of this book go to that foundation.

It's difficult to fully cover the player and more importantly, the man that Derrick Thomas was. This book as a pictorial tribute is a very good one.

  2. I loved this book! It talks about all the great stuff the community, and about how great a football player was. Get this book!
