2 comments about Thoughts on the Kentucky rifle in its golden age (Longrifle series).

  1. The Kindig book is a classic for those people who are interested in firearms of the muzzle loading period. The book is has well detailed photographs. These are very important for those people researching muzzle loading firearms with an eye towards building their own. They give the builder a reference from which to base appointments that are appropriate to the school and age period of the firearm. If you are starting a "builders" library this is one of the books to have.

  2. Joe Kindig's _Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle_ is a major work, cataloguing as it does the exhaustive Kindig longrifle collection. Even now, thirty seven years after its initial publication, no other work in the field (with the possible exception of George Shumway's _Rifles of Colonial America_, in two volumes,) comes close to its breadth of analysis, or to the sheer number of splendid arms shown in fine B&W illustrations. Each of the several 18th century Pennsylvania gunmaking schools is anlayzed individually, with several rifles from that school presented and discussed.

The text is far from dry and analytical, however. It is alive with humor and anecdotes, and apart from being top-notch research (or very educated opinion where the facts are unknown as yet), is a joy to read in its own right.

Most likely the book will be bought for its illustrations, though, for as interesting as the text is, the book is splitting at the seams with hundreds of crisp black and white photogtraphs from the late Mr. Kindig's landmark rifle collection which he assembled over his long life. Virtually every phase of metamorphosis in the fascinating development of the American longrifle is shown in close detail, with textual analysis of each rifle answering questions and asking new ones as well.

It is difficult to imagine delving into this field of study and not owning _Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle_. It is a vivid portrait of one of the great American artforms, and of a collection that may never again be altogether in the same place under the same owner, especially one as affectionate toward its subject as Joe Kindig.

2 comments about Know Your Sheridan Rifles & Pistols.

  1. The book gives sound information on the history of the company and the evolution of the product. It does not have anything to do with the quality of the product.

  2. Sheridans are expensive and are poorly made much $ is needed to make one useable. Try making an affordable gun.

1 comments about Pocket Knives: The New Compact Study Guide and Identifier (Identifying Guide Series).

  1. The book offers a lot of useful info such as the origin of pocketknives, how to identifiy some of them and how to identify some counterfeit knives. At 80 pages it's a good start but not a compete index. My particular favorite parts of the book are Mr Levine's insets that offer some interesting info. For example I did not know that WWII ear Nazi knives did not include pocket knives, only fix blade daggers but the many pocket knives sold at knife and gun shows are well done fakes that were made in the US. I think this book would complement any knife collectors library. Some of the examples of the knives discussed are rare and the photos are excellent.

1 comments about Firearms of the American West 1866-1894.

  1. This is one of the best books on a rather broad subject matter. The authors have done a commendable job of covering the availability and use of firearms during one of the most dramatic times in American history. Not only do they document the use of major manufacturers products, they also cover the use and possession of lesser known products as well. This is a well written and entertaining compendium of information that is bound to go down in literature history as one of the great books on the subject it covers. I recommend this book if you have any interest in this subject. It is well worth the money spent!

2 comments about Birmingham Gunmakers: A Complete Overview of the Birmingham Gun Trade and Its History As Well As a Listing of Birmingham Gunmakers.

  1. This is an excellent book which combines an overveiw of the history of the gun trade with specialist information for the true enthusiast. It is an easy read and the photos are quite remarkable.I'm looking forward to his next book.

  2. This book by Tate is really excellent research. The time and effort to dig out all of the details of even obscure Birmingham gunmakers was well spent. The book is actually a lot "thicker" than its appearance would have you believe. The photos are absolutely gorgeous. They are worth the price of the book. There are surprises in the book, too. Wait till you find out who actually built many of the name "London Best" guns. Well worth the money and if you're an English double fan you really can't be without this book. M. D. Beale, Jr.
