3 comments about Medieval Arms and Armor: A Pictorial Archive (Dover Pictorial Archive Series).

  1. It is full of detailed drawings of armor and weapons so in case you wish to know what something looks like without having to search all over the place for it, this book is worth it. It does not have a large amount of text explaining the weapons and armor though.

  2. I bought this for my 10 year old grandson for Christmas. He is really interested in medieval history. He was so excited that he kept going back to this book between opening other presents.

  3. Reproducedfrom a book originally published in Germany in 1903, this book contains more than a hundred pages of drawings of weapons, and particularily of armor from about 780 to the mid 1600's. The descriptions that go along with the illustrations are very well done and describe points that should be noted about the illustrations. These have been taken from the original German and specially translated for this edition.

Covering such a long period of time, the development of styles of armor and the details of construction. I found the discussion on points like gauntlets, elbow protectors and the like to be more complete than anywhere else I've seen. They are based on drawings of the earliest equipment, burial monuments, and from the fifteenth century through the Thirty Years War on extant examples of plate armor.

    Very well done.

2 comments about Uniforms, Equipment And Weapons of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I.

  1. I agree with the other reviewer (no. 1) ... heck I have several items in my collection that are not even mentioned in the book. That being said I have probably been collecting WW1 stuff longer than the author. I have thought of putting together a book like this but hats off to the author he actually had the guts to do it, Bravo! Love the photos and layout. A good resource for items that I don't have (yet or dont want) I would have to say that even thought it is not as good as a Canfield book it is a nice book that I would Probably pay full fair again to get onto my book shelf. Print it in the US next time!!! A recommended book!

  2. I got this massive work at a used book store. I traded practically an SUV full of books for credit and this is what I got. Why should you care about that fact? The reason I explain this is because this is pretty much the only way I ever would have wound up with a copy. The book is like a lot of Schiffer books; ongodly expensive.
Now, that being said, there is next to nothing on the US Army in WW1. There was a small collector's guide in the 80s, and now this. I don't think anyone's even tried a book like this before, and for that alone, I highly praise the author for taking it on.
I do, however, have issues with it. The author makes some pretty poor statements, showing some very bad research (such as the modern Army only issuing dress blue uniforms to "specialty" troops. It will soon be the ONLY dress uniform the Army has, for everyone). Once he gets into his topic, though, I found very few errors.
He does an admirable job of going through other people's collections to get photos of surviving items. Good job, there. But the quality of photography is extremely poor in many cases, and I'd guess he took some of the photos with his "point and click" camera. The flash photography is THAT bad in some places.
And I find it very odd that many of the "re-enacting" shots (and there are a great deal of these) aren't marked as such. But I'd guess anyone buying this book would know those photos aren't original. I must ask one thing of anyone thinking of writing such a book of their own:
PLEASE, for the love of all that is holy, don't put yourself in photos in your own book!
There are a curious number of lapses in some items. Not an original "trench" shotgun is shown in the book? C'mon, he can find over a dozen original boots, but not an original WW1 trench shotgun? I know several collectors (myself included) who have them in their gun safes!
I must give the author credit also for leaving out the exceptions for the most part. Far too often, people want to include the "cool" stuff that ha sno bearing on the topic. The author here pretty much avoids that trap.
In the end, I want it known that I did not feel cheated by getting this work. The author did a fine (yet mildly self-serving) job. For me the bottom line is this; Can I find a better work than this? NO, I can't. For that reason, and that reason chiefly, I now have it in my bookshelf.
If you're really into WW1 American stuff, you should have this right beside Canfield's book on WW1 weapons.

2 comments about B-24 Liberators of the 15th Air Force/49th Bomb Wing in World War II (Schiffer Military History).

  1. The MTO-based 15th Air Force, though it flew its share of hairy missions in WW II, never received the publicity garnered by the 8th Air Force based in England. Likewise there have been far fewer books on the 15th AF published since war's end. Fans of the 15th AF and/or the B-24 Liberator, therefore, should enjoy this photo tribute to the Liberators of the 49th Bomb Wing which was assigned to the 15th from April 1944 to October 1945.

The 49th BW was made up of three bomb groups: the 451st, 461st and 484th. Michael Hill and John Beitling's book takes a look at each bomb group in turn with the emphasis on the histories of the individual B-24s that served in each group. The 451st, which was the subject of an earlier book by Hill, receives the largest coverage (64 pages). By contrast, the 461st section is 32 pages long; the 484th, 33.

Following a two-page summary of the group's history and aircraft markings, the authors then present capsule histories of the unit's aircraft arranged by serial number. Many of the aircraft are illustrated with a black and white photograph. About one-third are air-to-air views; the remainder being ground shots with close-views of nose art. And 49th BW Libs had some really great nose art!

If you're looking for detailed information on missions flown by the 49th BW, this isn't the book for you. Rather it is a nicely done and surprisingly informative photo guide to the slab-sided warbirds that carried 49th BW crews into battle.

    Interesting reading!

  2. Not as much historical detail as I was hoping for but lots of informatin about various aircraft.

3 comments about Famous Firearms of the Old West: From Wild Bill Hickok's Colt Revolvers to Geronimo's Winchester, Twelve Guns That Shaped Our History.

  1. Herring writes about guns the way McPhee writes about rocks, fish, and oranges. In an easy but confident voice, Herring describes the history and people behind a dozen firearms. He managed also to be informative but not pedantic and decidedly avoids hook and bullet assumptions. A pleasure to read.

  2. For those that yearn for yesteryear and a hearty 'Hi-yo Silver!' this is the real thing. Hal delivers again. If you think you know the story of the person, it is fascinating to see how his story would not have been possible with out his particular firearm.

  3. There are a lot of books out there that cover historical firearms, biographies of the men who used them, or the world they lived in. Herring's book is one of the few that combines all three of these aspects into one story. By selecting specific weapons, the men who used them, and how society looked at that particular time, Famous Firearms Of The Old West provides the reader with a glimpse of the growth of our nation.

This is not just a gun book. Anyone interested in history, sociology, or firearms should find a great read in this book.

2 comments about Muskets of the Revolution and the French & Indian Wars.

  1. Muskets Of The Revolution And The French & Indian Wars is an extensive reference, history, and discussion of the smoothbore longarm musket as used in Early America. Covering British, French, Dutch, German, Spanish and American weapons, Muskets of the Revolution is filled with black- and-white photographs of sample muskets on virtually every page, and the thoroughly researched and detailed history is supplemented with footnotes, a bibliography, and an index. A "must-have" resource for collectors, historians and gun aficionados, Muskets Of The Revolution And The French & Indian Wars covers its topic with singular depth and brilliance.

  2. Perhaps I am a bit spoiled having been lucky enough to acquire a copy of George Moller's American Militery Shoulder Arms but I do think that though this work is overpriced and does not measure up to that standard it is still an excellent source of information on the shoulder weapons of this period and would serve as an excellent companion to George Neuman's Battle Weapons of the American Revolution. Another great book to go with it would be the excellent work of Flintlock Fowlers by Tom Grinslade. Its own section on Colonial fowlers though good would be well augmented. It also provides insights into some of the fighting men of the period. It certainly could use a little work on the French section as well as German but none the less is an excellent book.

3 comments about Standard Guide to Razors: Identification and Values (Standard Guide to Razors Identification and Values).

  1. It may seem too specific a subject for more general collector's reference shelves, but many collect razors and will find this specific guide to their identification and value and important reference. Black and white and color photos of selected antiques accompany charts and graphs of values packaged in a format perfect for take-along tote.

  2. The book is a good reference for any collector. However, the book pictured online is the Second Edition, which we thought we were receiving. We received the first edition, not the second updated version as was pictured online.

  3. look no further this is the book it is the ultimate guide to razors not just the ones you shave with. I mean knifes razors and well everything. belive me take my advice by this book. good job roy ritchie.

5 comments about Cartridges of the World: 10th Edition, Revised and Expanded.

  1. This book is very well researched, full of facts and information. This is a book I would recommend. Great reference resource.

  2. This book is very well laid out and gives a really good explanation of any cartridge you've every heard of and some you probably have never heard of and a particularly good treatise on obsolete cartridges. The listing of 22 cal. rimfires with ballistic data is worth the price of the Book. Five stars all the way.

  3. This book has proven to be a great book for identifing cartridges and just learning about some of the not so common rounds out there. It is a very complete book covering black powder cartridges to modern. Each cartridge in the book has a little description and some history and some even have the dimensions of the round. Interesting reading for researching or pleasure.

  4. One of the most comprehensive sources of information about cartridges available. A MUST have for you library of firearms information.
