3 comments about Ruger .22 Automatic Pistol: Standard/ Mark I/ Mark Ii Series.

  1. The entire history of one of the best .22 pistols ever made. For those who want to know how to care for their handgun and make it more fun to shoot, this is the book to have in your library.

  2. This book is essential for the Ruger semi-auto pistol collector. It only covers the Standard, the MKI, and MKII pistols, but that is all it should cover. The MKIII pistol is not present, nor are the Ruger revolvers or the Ruger 22/45. The book does cover a few Ruger MKII facsimiles and successful gunsmithing trends, as well as proper maintenance and detail stripping.

The book is not a volume worshiping Bill Ruger. Rather it is an information packed publication of the origins and development of the most popular .22 auto-pistol of all time.

For under $12, it's an absolute steal. Buy it.

  3. If you are thinking of buying a target pistol, can't decide exactly which to buy, but are considering a Ruger, then read this book. It will make your decision for you.

The book covers the history of Sturm, Ruger & Company, the various models of the .22 automatic pistols, the chronology of their production, and brief descriptions of other firearms developed by the firm. Also covered are care and maintenance of the pistols, including field- and detail-stripping instructions. The book concludes with chapters on available accessories and a survey of ammunition for use with Rugers.

The overall story is one of high quality, accuracy, continuous refinement of design, and innovation in weapons manufacture. Enjoy your new Ruger.

5 comments about Blue Book of Gun Values, 27th Edition.

  1. Great book at a great price. Very informative. A must for any collector or hobbiest.

  2. For many years (35) I have relied on this book as a guide to firearms values. It is the most complete gun guide published.
Robert Caselnova, FFL, owner Cas Firearms

  3. This is the standard for gun values. It is the one I see used by the dealers at all the gunshows. While it is not perfect, it is a the most information I have ever seen about gun values in one place. Some information may be in error, but given the sheer volume of entries, the errors are minor. I have been studying guns for over thirty-five years, and was amazed at how many guns and makers were listed that I had never heard of. Buy this one if you want to get fair value in your gun deals.

  4. I guess they were in a time crunch. This book doesn't have all guns in their value. I have three gun not in the book how many more are missing? I say do your job!

  5. Updated and informative reference on gun values. Extensive listings. With many changes in the firearms industry nothing can be completely current; however, this book is as close as you will get.

1 comments about The Winchester Book.

  1. Whether you intend to buy 1 or 1000 Winchesters, you need this book in order to determine the correctness and originality of the Winchester you are thinking of buying. George Madis has done a remarkable, exhaustive job of presenting each model, its characteristics, variations, special order features, improvements progression, dimensions, historical background, predecessor models, and other pertinences to help you to know what you are buying. At the end of each model/chapter are a list of the serial numbers produced each year, the total number produced and the rarity of special features as well as standard features. Following the guns themselves, are chapters on sights (standard and special order), and special order features, barrel lengths, finishes, engraving and calibers. There is even a chapter on Winchester pistols. All in all, it is still the best, most comprehensive study of this most important manufacturer's longarms which were used to forge our civilization from the raw, wild, unexplored country our forebears faced in the last half of the 19th century.

5 comments about Ricochet: Confessions of a Gun Lobbyist.

  1. Title pretty much says it all. It has been clear to me for years as an NRA member that there were many fat cats running a supposedly non-profit organization solely to provide themselves w/ a good living, to the detriment of the rank and file membership and the avowed objective of preserving our constitutional rights [all of them, not just one as the media likes to portray.] This very entertaining read, in the form of the "I was there & this is the real story behind the events" should be required reading by everyone who cares about the future of the shooting sports worldwide. The truth hurts, but it also will set you free.

  2. I heard an interview with Mr. Feldman on the radio and this piqued my interest in reading the book. I am the owner of 2 Glocks, possess a concealed carry permit and am not an NRA member nor do I have any interest in joining the organization. I think reading the book confirmed my disdain with the lobbying organization as well as pointing out the weakness in the case made by many on the gun control side of the debate.

If I am disappointed in any way with the book it is in the fact that Mr. Feldman should have, in my opinion, offered some insight into what he thinks would be tangible ways to bridge the gap between gun control advocates and gun enthusiasts. He spends a fair amount of time criticizing both sides but does not really touch on what he thinks would be more effective ways of squelching the conflict and doing more to keep guns out of the hands of those who are more likely to use them to commit acts of violence.

For example: In my opinion, anyone who has been committed for a psychiatric evaluation or who takes prescription drugs for depression, bipolar disorder, etc. ought to be flagged by the Instacheck system and be required to pass a higher standard before being allowed to buy a firearm. It would not be an absolute barrier but a requirement to get more information. This might have prevented the shootings at Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University (and others) which were carried out with legally bought weapons by disturbed young men with known psychiatric issues. I think a career gun industry advocate and lobbyist as Mr. Feldman ought to have offered his constructive opinion on issues such as this. It would have made Ricochet a more powerful work.

  3. I found Ricochet: Confessions of a Gun Lobbyist a quick and interesting read. Richard Feldman provides a snapshot of a piece of history in the push and pull in the development of public policy in our pluralistic society. I gave this as a Christmas gift to my sons Lt. Scott Mayberry, USMC and Tim Mayberry so they could reflect on the excitment of life in the nation's capital.

    -- Richard Mayberry, McLean Virginia

  4. Sorta like old home week for me...

I'd quite agree you can't judge this book by its press or blog reviews. The press naturally picked up on Richard's criticism of NRA fundraising and expenditures, and the bloggers (except me, who refused to blog without reading it) reacted to that. Both made the book seem antigun, when it's very far from that. As I would have guessed, because I last saw the author at the private ceremony to dedicate the bronze of Harlon Carter: Harlon's family would not have singled him out for invitation unless he was respected by them.

The book is exceptionally clearly written, and definitely a page turner. I think I took one break from reading its 300+ pages. If anyone wants to see what it's like to be a lobbyist, this is the book for them. Just one episode: at one point NY Gov. Mario Cuomo holds a tense meeting with the author and others, and tries to break the ice by deliberately sitting on a whoopee cushion. It didn't go over very well...

  5. I wasn't sure what I was going to get when I picked up "Ricochet" but it turned out to be a page turner.

Richard Feldman is a skillful writer and an engaging story teller. His prose is easily approachable, passionate, and at the same time, avoids emotional extremes and bumper sticker slogans -- it's easy to see how he has been such a successful lobbiest.

The "confessions" aren't ideological regrets, but rather the kiss-and-tell story of internecine warfare at one of America's largest and most powerful lobbying groups. Feldman presents the National Rifle Association to be not exactly the 800 lb gorilla many people had always assumed -- but rather a pack of 80 lb chimpanzees that sometimes work together towards a common goal but also spend a lot of time poking one another in the eyes.

At the book's core, divergent factions in the NRA (one spearheaded by Feldman) disagree fundamentally on the best way to bring their cause forward -- the reader can decide which (if either) seems more practical. A fascinating read, whatever your position on guns. "Ricochet" seems to tell a universal tale -- one assumes that the very same types of arguments are going on in the back rooms of Greenpeace or any other lobbying group staffed by passionate and dedicated idealists.

5 comments about Hayduke Silencer Book.

  1. The book was written in 1989 and has about 70 pages. I read each page and unfortunately, this book does not offer any information more that you can find on the internet. In fact, I found more data, figures, pictures, and relevant information on the internet than this book. The pictures are very crude, badly printed, has no clarity, and no science behind it at all. It was a bit disappointing for me.Hayduke Silencer Book

  2. I bought this book for fun. i wondered how silencers and and if the ones in the movies would work. After looking through this book i had a better understanding. this book is more of how to build one and not big on explaining how they work.

  3. It's hard to imagine how this book got in to print: poorly written, poorly researched, poorly presented. It fails to provide any insight in to the principles behind suppressor design and manufacture, contains no information about gunsmith practices for mounting a silencer, and has just enough print to escape classification as a picture book.

Save your money and time. Buy anything but a Hayduke book.

  4. Hayduke rides again!
The Edward Abbey frictional character has a number of books under this guise, This is one of those little gems of his. However, all the plans are simplistic. And most are for the .22 rifle or pistol. I wanted to see plans with washers and welding, but alas, they where not here. If you sat down and wrote 5 ways to suppress the sound of a gun, it would be in this small book.

A fun book to read, and educational. Please do remember that even the assembly of the parts in preparation to build a suppressor is a federal offense, don't do it without ATF permission (and paying the...tax of course!).

  5. Practical designs and advice on silencers. The pop bottle model works like a champ and can be built in 15 min..

  1. A must have for anyone interested in classic shotguns. Interesting reading with adequate technical information, but not overbearing.

  2. The book has a lot of history, and is very informative on the history of double guns, and especially detailed in that of American heritage, I read a substatial amount about auto ejectors which I understand, twisted bore and smooth bore, pretty much self explainable, but exactly what is a sidelock, what is a boxlock? How do they differ? Old or new which way is the way to go? I look forward to buying a few doubles and using them. Obviously I do not need a $10,000, or even a $15,000 plus double, but I would like one I could use in the field and have something of value down the road in the next 20 or 30 plus years. I think a few informative drawings and discriptions a little more of the understanding of the workings and parts in detail would be benefical. I am not new to firearms for I have a found respect of them and their uses in more than a few areas but doubles are fairly new to me, and with that, new terminology and parts are hard to understand without knowing what to look for.

  3. More McIntosh. I don't know who has the definitive work on shotguns, but this one must be close. Especially loved the section on spagetti shotguns. I can tell you up front that, for American guns, he prefers Foxes, but if you have read his works, you already know that.

This is just more McIntosh. And that is good, even though he has ruined my life. For years I've just considered guns to be tools like drills and saws .... tools to be used but not pampered. Then I discovered McIntosh, and Italian shotguns, and life has not been the same since.

I've been shooting Japanese. Totally reliable. Never had a problem. But it's like driving a Toyota. I want a Ferrari.

    Michael is to blame.

  4. I agree with the reviewer from Seattle -- this book is strictly about high-grade shotguns such as Parker, L.C. Smith, Fox, the Winchester 21 and many others, and has nothing to do with handguns. Overall it's a good book for this type of shotgun.

  5. The above review is a bunch of baloney by someone who has never read the book. This book has nothing to do with handguns at all. It's about shotguns, and specifically about the two barrel variety. - - This happens to be an excellent book and a great resource for someone contemplating the purchase of a nice double gun. - -

5 comments about The Gun Digest Book of Assault Weapons.

  1. I have generally enjoyed reading the previous editions of the "Gun Digest Book of Assault Weapons", but this book was dismal in my humble opinion. As other reviewers have noted, there is general discordance with the style of writing, with most chapters appearing to be quickly slapped together from old articles. Most of the material is old and outdated, and most of the firearms written about in this book would not fit the current definition of "Assault weapon" that the picture on the front would convey (Ranch rifles, bolt action 'sniper' rifles, semi-auto shotguns, AR-15 type rifles, and standard handguns seem to take up most of the space). For an updated book about assault weapons, there was little information on current production models of the excellent new firearms available today.

When someone sells a book about assault weapons, you would expect most of the book to be about assault weapons. This one is not. I can not recommend this book because of its poorly written and outdated chapters and subjects and a general lack of any semblance to its title. Go and read through the book at a local store before considering a purchase, it might well save you some money.

  3. This book is a mishmash of articles in no logical order with lots of factual errors and lots of outdated information. Obviously slapped together from existing articles. Really a disappointing waste of time.

  4. This book has almost all the right things to be a hit. It has tons of pictures, gun tests, gun specifications, and hard to find information about guns never built. You can read it once and be amazed and then you can still pick it up and learn more. you can never stop learning from it. The reason I gave it four stars, though, is because of its lack in amount of guns. I understand it is the fifth installment in a series, so I can't wait for the sixth!

  5. As a builder and collector of AR-15's, I purchased this book in the hopes of getting some new info on the military versions of the rifle. The cover of the book certainly caught my eye, and perhaps that was the intention. However, I found myself getting a bit "depressed" as page after page of non-M16 info was thumbed through. Finally, after reaching nearly the end, there was one story on the M4 Carbine. It was just enough to make me keep the book. That's more than I can say about a few other books I also ordered.
