1. This is really one of the most unusual Kachina art books out there. Besides the exquisite photography of Gene Balzer, Theda Bassman delves into how the new carvers who adapted to all wood carving feel about their craft and what it means to them to be a carver. One gets a real sense that the artists themselves come alive and in this way, bring their art alive. They demonstrate a trust in talking with Ms. Bassman, who has a long history of working in the Southwest Indian contemporary art world. In this way, this book transcends the typical art book.

1. This book is filled with lovely color photos of early Kewpie paperdolls, post cards & other paper products that bear Kewpie pictures. Rather than contenting himself with only the very early products that were overseen by Rose O'Neil, John Axe continues with the production of later Kewpies. The most recent are not included, but Kewpie dolls as recent as 2001 are pictured. This is great for a collector such as myself who cannot afford to buy the early Kewpies, but must be satisfied with later reproductions. All photographs are in full color. A MUST for collectors' of the more modern Kewpies.

1. The title "Encyclopedia" suggests a book full of information, but the text of this book is sparse, disjointed, and occasionally downright weird. (It starts with the voyage of the Mayflower. Really. I could not possibly make that up.)
   
   The color photos of the dolls in the most recent edition are lovely, but a surprising number of the book's photos are of old advertising materials, newspaper clippings, promotional displays and even price lists, plus photos of the company's founding family. Far from an encyclopedia about the popular Ginny doll, the book reads as if someone published the company's scrapbook.



2. My review applies to the revised edition I just acquired, 2004 copyright. It features over 350 full-color photos and is very, very informative. I especially liked the fact that all Ginnys shown in this book are wearing their authentic costumes and accessories! This book has very elaborate descriptions and include pictures of many of the original boxes that the Ginnys came in. What more can I say? It's well worth the investment! Love this book!

1. Jan Foulke knows her dolls and provides interesting information about chinas. A great variety of chinas are presented, broken down by decades, from 1840's through 1930's. Photos provide side-views of fancy china heads for comparison of hairstyles. Basic information about manufacture, characteristics to look for when collecting and things to watch out for. A section is devoted to frozen charlottes. She also mentions Clear dolls and Ruth Gibbs dolls. Most photos are close-ups of the face/head, not full-view with clothing for those who are looking for costuming ideas. The only complaint is that the book is just too short!! Nice basic beginner book for the new china doll enthusiast.



2. What a wonderful book! Jan Foulke has outdone herself in this guide to china dolls. As a collector who is just tip-toeing into the world of these beautiful dolls, I was delighted to come across this helpful book. Ms. Foulke's book is filled with loads of details on identifying and dating your chinas, as well the most incredible photographs. The close-ups and comparisons of hairstyles of the various periods are invaluable to the new as well as the experienced collector. Having collected antique dolls for over 20 years, I was very familiar with the basics of china doll collecting. This book however, educates the collector in the fine art of collecting the china doll. If you don't absolutely love these dolls when you open the book, you will definitely want at least one for your collection by the time you finish!
