1 comments about Lee Middleton Original Dolls Price Guide.

  1. This book is a real "must have" for a Lee Middleton doll collector. It reviews the production of the Lee Middleton Company from the beginning to year 1999.

Beacause many of the Lee Middleton doll collectors are very familiar of Reva Schick's, the company's present designer's production, the most valuable thing in the book is Lee's early production. The book shows with chronologically ordered pictures of dolls how Lee Middleton company's style was developed. I started to appreciate the dolls in the different way after reading this book.

The main part the book is focused on are prices. All Lee Middleton Company's production is listed and priced. That makes a book very nice handbook for a doll collector. There are also plenty of doll photos in the book. The price lists and photos really make book more a catalog than a book. There are only few actual articles in the book: stories about Lee and Reva, the designers, and some other fairly short chapters.

What I really missed were the presentation of different head molds and lists of dolls by head mold. Many collectors are very interested on different head molds and the purpose of many collection is to show different head molds.

There were plenty of photos, but most of them have been published in catalogs and web pages many times before. I would have loved to see more photos taken for this book only.

Instead of giving prices of the dolls, Larry Koon could have given a price range which would have shown better that the value of a doll highly depends on the condition of the doll.

  1. This book has a lot of different categories and therefore none are complete. You will get a sampling of items across different areas and times, but this will not help you identify the vast majority of what you own or are looking to buy. Price guide in the back only covers those items pictured in the book. Is a good starter book, probably not for the serious collector.

4 comments about Dawn Dolls: Official Encyclopedia & Price Guide.

  1. This was the first book that I purchased before starting my Dawn doll collection. I played with Dawn and her friends as a child but didn't have any of my dolls. All the pictures in the book are wonderful and help you identify the 'authentic' Dawn doll stuff from the imitations. I didn't even realize that there was so much stuff about Dawn. A very fascinating stroll down memory lane. I refer to this book before purchasing ANY Dawn dolls or accessories. A MUST for any Dawn doll collector!!!

  2. Lots of great pictures.
Did not like the value format

  3. A wonderful book with so many incredible photos I could not set it down until I looked at absolutely everything! Beautifully done with great photos of one of my favorite childhood "friends," Dawn. Brought back special memories for me, and also reminded me of Dawn clothes and accessories I had forgotten over the years. I loved seeing each outfit modeled by a doll too. One of the best parts for me was the chapter on knockoff and copycat dolls and toys. I was able to identify a Dawn knockoff doll that I had been previously unable to! Thanks! A great book for the new collector (like me!) or the veteran collector.

  4. This new Dawn book is a must have for the Dawn collector! Even if you are just starting out, you should see this book. You will find this book to have large and clear photos. Very helpful to see details! The author shares her amazing collection and has some unique hard to find and variations. Other books did not do justice to Dawn dolls. I find myself scanning this book over and over. The price guide is pretty accurate in helping you seek out these lovely ladies. Thank you for sharing your collection with us Benita Schwartz!

1 comments about Doll Kitchens, 1800-1980.

  1. I bought this book to help me choose furniture for my own doll's kitchen. I am very pleased! The large, detailed pictures tell you more about doll kitchens and full sized kitchens than books about historical interiors. If you are planning a victorian dollhouse, skip the history books and get this one instead! My only disappointment is with the title. It really should be "Doll Kitchens, 1860-1980" because the information pre-1860 was scanty. The author covers those sixty years too quickly, then goes into great detail about the 1860's onward.

4 comments about Composition & Wood Dolls and Toys: A Collector's Reference Guide.

  1. I own both volumes of this book and both are great! You cannot go wrong with buying both volumes ,or just one. Together though, both volumes are so valuable!

But if you must own just one of the volumes (in this series) then buy this volume first, & then see if you need the next volume. It could be that this volume fills your need, since this volume is packed with soooo much information! Also, the color photos are just great!

  2. Of all my years of collecting dolls, I've never seen such a complete and informative book. Most impressive are the clear color pictures and the interesting discussion of the Cameo doll company. I.m very pleased with this purchase and recommend it to novice as well as experienced doll collectors.

  3. An extremely resourceful book. Deep histories and information on composition & wood dolls, plus an extensive photo gallery of many rare dolls. A must have for any collector in their right mind!

  4. Most books like this only show pictures with prices. Michele's book gives me more information, background and a true understanding about the dolls, there origins, and the true history. Besides, it's a fun book to read with great photos. I'm glad I found it.

2 comments about Dolls and Accessories of the 1930s and 1940s (Schiffer Book for Collectors).

  1. Another wonderfully done book on composition dolls; photography is excellent and many 'minty' dolls are pictured. I would liked to have seen a few more accessories, but the beauty and variety of the dolls makes up for it. This is definitely a keeper and is an outstanding addition to any compo, or American doll, collectors' library.

  2. This is a wonderful compilation of Dolls and Accessories from the 1930s and 1940s...lots of photos, vintage advertisements, great descriptions, and explanations. Easy to read and thorough. Good job!

  1. Now in an updated second edition, Not Just A Pretty Face: Dolls And Human Figurines In Alaska Native Cultures is a striking showcase of dolls and dollmaking, exploring their role in the lives of native Alaskans from ancient ivory carvings to the modern tourist market. Filled with color photographs, Not Just A Pretty Face is both an artistic and anthropological showcase. The text surveys the history of dolls and dollmaking, and includes interviews with dollmakers as well as speculations upon the future of native arts. A lay reader-friendly showcase for anthropology shelves, Native American studies shelves, and doll collector shelves alike.
