5 comments about Japanese Chin (Comprehensive Owners Guide).
- I bought my Chin several months ago and spent quite a bit of time looking for information about the breed. This is the First, and only book I have found on them. It is a pretty good book, but not in as much detail as the books I have bought for my Pomeranian and for my Whippet.
It seems that they are pretty rare in this area, Pittsburgh Pa., as I have only found one other person with one. So I am very happy with the information in this book. Plus, I don't understand why they are called Japanese Chin when they originated in China.
- I felt like I was ten years old again being scolded by my mother while reading this book. The author manages to be as demeaning as possible to adults who read it. With continous comments like are you sure you're responsible enough to have a pet? Maybe you should try a fish. Comments like this are relentless throughout the book. It was like the author wanted to make you feel like a retard or something.
However, that's not to say that the book is without its merits (hence the 2 stars not just one). There's allot of information here on caring for your Japenese Chin as well as some interesting history on the species. Anyway, if your alright with being spoken to as if you were a 2 year old you can't go wrong with the price. Just be forewarned, the author is down right irritating at times. To the author: I wouldn't be purchasing the book if I didn't already have the dog, stop with the lecturing already!
- This is a good over all manual for raising a Japanese Chin. Interesting history of the breed, breed standards, health needs and warnings, training techniques and hints, and all the fun stuff. I found it to be all I needed.
- This book is good for a beginner, but if you already own a Chin then look elsewhere. This book offers the same information that can be gleaned from a google search.
- Gives lots of information, nice pictures. If you know alot about the breed already, this is not the book for you. Most of the information is readily available elsewhere. If you are a novice to the Japanese Chin Breed, then this is a good start. Lots of information in one place.

5 comments about Boxers (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).
- It would be a good book for people who know almost nothing about dogs, but its info is very general
- The book wasn't too helpful. Just gave me information on things I already knew. I bought a better one for only $1.00 at a local dollar store. I advise you not to buy and just do a little web surfing online. You'll find better information.
- As a "dog person", I have to say that I learned very little specifically about boxers from this book. There is some standard stuff about dogs in general "Fleas feed on a dog by biting and sucking its blood. Their bites often cause severe itching..." Who doesn't know this information? Even children can tell you this without reading this (price) book. The stuff which is specific to boxers (breed standards, health information) can easily be obtained by an internet search. The only reason I gave it two stars is that some of the photographs are nice. I don't reccomend buying this book.
- This is a great book to prepare you for getting a boxer. It has great information on training and health for your new puppy. Also, it has many great pictures of boxers.
- This book is an excellent, well rounded, consise educational book on boxers. Chapters include: -The Typical Boxer -Tips on Buying a Boxer -Getting the Puppy Settled -Understanding Boxers -Training: The Gentle Approach -Daily Grooming and Health Check and, -Proper Nutrition and Feeding -Preventive Health Care and Illnesses -Breeding Boxers
As you can see this book is very complete. You will understand and appreciate boxers in a whole new way. The book also contains many wonderful color photographs, and a complete lists of additional sources for information and help in caring for your boxer. A must have!

1 comments about Silly Dog Tricks: Fun for You and Your Best Friend.
- I wanted a guide for my kids to use when teaching our dog some tricks to show off to their friends, and I'm really impressed with this book! They're having a lot of fun with it, and our dog is loving all of the attention. The tricks range from simple to slightly more involved, and the descriptions are easy to understand. Plus, they love the clicker and toys that came with it. =-) It was a great value - definitely recommend it!

4 comments about How to Train Your Shetland Sheepdog (How To...(T.F.H. Publications)).
- I was disappointed in this book. It was a "read between the lines" kind of book. Was not helpful in training my dog at all.
- Agree with with other reviewer that this is a great resource for sheltie owners, or propsective owners. She's correct in providing the background to why Shelties aren't the breed for everyone, as they demand attention.
She provides needed tips on how to keep the Shelties in your life happy and you in turn happy with them! They do need to work and she provides training tips on doing just that. Info is provided on selection, stages of development, early puppy training, basic obedience, formal training, problem prevention and solutions, and advanced sports and activities. We have our two Shelties through obedience and now into agility and can vouch how much fun this breed truly is. This book will aid your enjoyment of this intelligent and loyal breed.
- This book had great information about the Sheltie. I felt it was quite helpful to me. It also had great pictures!!
- This is quite easily the most useful sheltie book that I own. Most books about shelties are slim volumes that talk about grooming, the breed history, and a little about temperment. This book dives right in to telling you how to housebreak your sheltie, how to train them to sit, heel, come and stay, and more. It covers a little about competing with shelties in obedience, agility, and herding, and has tons of wonderful pictures. It's full of great, practical, advice. If you're a new dog owner, you should really pick up this book and read it.

5 comments about The New Complete Alaskan Malamute.
- This book is full of great history on the breed and information on how to show and sled your dog (once you get to that stage in growth and training!). If you have or are bringing home a new puppy it is not the book for you. I searched for this book because it was recommended to me. I think now that recommendation was only because this certain breeder had a few "mentions" in the book. I am looking for NOW information on my new puppy. This book is great for my friends who stop by -- they look at the pictures.
- If you already own a malamute or are thinking of getting one this book prvides the best guide for you. It not only tells you the pros about the breed but also the cons, and gives you a realistic look on what the breed is about. Ignorance leads to problems with malamutes so the best way to prepare yourself is HAVE THIS BOOK!!! Remember Owning A Malamute Is Not A Right! It Is A Privillage! Jamie Wiatowski, Mimmenuk Alaskan Malamutes
- The New Complete Alaskan Malamute is exactly what the title implies, a compendium of facts and relative information about the breed. Covered are aspects of the history, personality of the breed, sledding, backpacking, medical/genetic issues, grooming, the breed Standard interpreted, a glossary of terms, and much much more. For the prospective or fisrt-time owner, and even long term fancier, this book is a gem for the wealth, depth and breadth of information. Acquisition of this notable work is a must for all fanciers.
- This is an Excellent book on Alaskan Malamutes. We presently own 3 Mals and are getting our first show Malamute in Dec. of 1997. I highly recommend this book to those who are getting their first Alaskan Malamute or people that already have one. It covers everything from the beginning of the Alaskan Malamute, showing conformation, obedience, medical problems, to sledding with these wonderful dogs.
- For a first time mal owner this book would be just Ok, not one of the top three to buy, however, I personally am a history buff and this is a must and it gives back ground of why mals act the way they do or do not do something. I like it.

2 comments about Love Your Dog Pictures: How to Photograph Your Pet with Any Camera.
- As the previous review indicates, this book is aimed at the person who is not a photographer but rather the loving pet owner who wants better photos of their dog. The book is full of clear examples that will help get a better photo of your dog. The author has an easy writing style and her instructions are easy to incorporate into photographing. After reading this book, any dog lover should be able to get pictures that will be more individual and representative of their dog. Definitely for the beginning/snapshot photographer who wants pictures that will actually look like their dog without distortion, and add some creativity in their photos.
- This book is not about becoming a professional dog photographer but it is intended for the family photographer who wants to know how to take the best pictures of their dog or their family's dog. Pictures they can hang on the wall later on or put in scrapbooks. It will help you create images of your dog that will catch the dog's true spirit.
It does not matter if you have a cheap film camera or an expensive digital SLR camera, the tips and techniques in this book will work for any camera. Throughout the different chapters the text is accompanied by famous dog quotes every now and then and along with all the tips and techniques are 305 illustrations in total (only ten in b/w) that clearly show you before and after situations and different camera setups and their resulting photographs.
In the first chapters you'll get familiar with all the technical stuff like equipment and exposure, then you'll move on to more practical techniques like lightning, composition and taking great action shots, posing and portraits. The last part explains in short chapters how to digitize your film photographs, how to enhance your digital pictures and how to
turn them into scrapbook pages. In the appendix you'll get to meet all the dogs that were models for the illustrations throughout this book.
With its 144 pages this book is a definite handbook for beginning photographers who want to know everything about taking beautiful photographs of their beloved dogs. If you are looking for more professional dog photography you might be better off with Creative Canine Photography. This book, Love Your Dog Pictures, though handles everything you ever needed to know about dog photography and with a creative mind I'm sure you can be just as well a professional dog photographer. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their photographing skills and who wants to catch their dog's real personality on image.

4 comments about Natural Healing for Dogs and Cats A-Z (A--Z Books).
- This is a fun book, especially for the beginner.
The drawing are wonderful!
- Not only is this a great book, but Dr. Cheryl is a wonderful veterinarian!! She is incredibly intuitive and knowledgeable and my animals (cats, dogs, and horses) have been in the best of health since being under her care -- and I had some rather difficult cases.
- It's about time someone put together a clear and concise guide to the numerous alternative veterinary treatments available. Dr. Schwartz gives us a path to greater involvement in our pets' care, while stating clearly when to consult a health care professional. As an obedience instructor for over 20 years, I recommend this book highly to all owners of dogs and cats!
- This beautifully illustrated, colorful, spiralbound hardcover book would make a great gift for the dog or cat lover with an interest in natural remedies for animals. Of course it's nowhere near as thorough as Dr. Schwartz' excellent "Four Paws, Five Directions," but this A-Z guide to dozens of ailments (from abscesses and arthritis to worms and yawning) is nonetheless a solid reference for those who prefer to tackle health problems with nutrition, herbs, homeopathy, and massage instead of drugs and chemical insecticides. Don't expect elaborate treatment plans and diagnosis techniques from this little book -- just safe and natural remedies you can try at home. And yes, Dr. Schwartz does take care to point out when it's a good idea to see a professional for diagnosis/treatment.

5 comments about Shadow Mountain: A Memoir of Wolves, a Woman, and the Wild.
- I truly enjoyed this book. The only reason it is not getting 5 stars is b/c I felt a litle misled by the synopsis on the back. I thought the entire book would be about wolves and Yellowstone. The book was about these topics but also much more about the author's relationships with her animals. As an animal lover, I really enjoyed these parts of the book. And as a married person without children, I can relate when she writes about people not treating pets as family or the lack of sensitivity towards animals (as opposed to humans).
I bought this book after visiting Yellowstone recently and it was a good follow-up to my trip. How could anyone not have been excited about the reintroduction of wolves into the park. What an amazing story.
- Someone should ban this woman from ever using a simile or a metaphor again. At least she could refrain from using 3 or 4 of them in every sentence. I like wolves and from reading the back of the book it sounded interesting. I wish that I would have read the first chapter before buying this book. It might have some decent imformation in it, but I just about threw up from trying to get past the first chapter.
- This is an excellent book and has much to offer for nature /animal lovers, how difficult such a project is, to combat many opposing forces. It has a measure of spirituality, romance and animal nature.
- I bought the book thinking it was about wolves and yellow stone-what the book described on the back. But in short it seemed that the majority was an auto-biography about woman who loved wolves. Other than that the book was good but I wish it had more stuff about the actual subject.
- I cannot express in words how much I loved this book. It is more in my heart than words on a page. I felt uplifted at times and horribly saddened at other times. I cried out loud and smiled big smiles when a part of the book touched me. Rene had many, many wonderful experiences and shared her life with so many wonderful people and animals. I could not put the book down. I had bought this book for my Daughter as a Christmas gift. She is studying to be a wildlife bilogist and her passion is the wolf. Ashley (my daughter) reminds me so much of Rene that it scares me. Her passion to fight for the wolf is exactly what I wish for my daughter. I recomend this book to anyone who loves wildlife and who wants to fight for their rights. Rene is an asset to the world of wildlife and should be commended on such honorable work. Great book! Buy it! together we can all make a difference!
