2 comments about Teaching Dog Obedience Classes: The Manual for Instructors.

  1. I have been teaching obedience for many years. This book really opens up a whole new world for you. The book is very detailed, descriptive, and written for everyone. A real must have in every dog owners home!

  2. Dr. Volhard & Ms. Fisher have once again collaborated on a useful, motivational, and entertaining handbook for dog obedience. This time they focus on the instructor. They give detailed advise on the hows and whys of taking a group of handlers through a successful session. The fundamental point of the handbook is that training a dog is one thing - but, teaching a class how to train their dogs is quite different. Remarkably well written and entertaining: a MUST for all training directors and should be in all dog club and dog school libraries.

3 comments about Kennel Building and Management (Howell reference books).

  1. Someone bought me this book on kennel management and as I've read the others on the market, at first glance I thought it would be of no interest and sadly a waste of their money. But I enjoyed it. You don't read over 200 pages written by a man with such experience and not learn something. It's my opinion that this isn't a high profile reference book for the already initiated, wanting factual A-Z information. (Jim Krack writes an amazing book if you want this.) Nor is it for the new-age, big bucks commercial operator-to-be, dealing with dogs as if they are plastic houseplants. It would more likely be of use to the upgrading hobbyist or novice wanting to know the fundamental arts and craft of kennel operating, and most likely will be starting with a very modest one from home. Mario shares his knowledge through his experience, examples and testimonies. His skill is not bombarding the novice with too much information and jargon. Instead he picks on a few key issues that only someone who has served (I quote from the profile page) " an extensive apprenticeship" knows that if you don't get right, or cut corners in the beginning, you'll spend forever putting it right. Some of his examples get multiple concepts over very well to someone who has not experienced them before. I like this book because it is well written and from his personal perspective and experiences. It's a stepping-stone that the novice can build upon. And also, I bet he didn't just blindly list products to use from a mailing list, but because he tried them or knew someone they had worked for. His simple odor control worked perfectly for me, while others have failed. The type of building panels he recommended for the small operator, proved to be just right. This in itself paid for the book. It's my recommendation that the simplicity of this book is not its weakness, but its joy, because only truly experienced people can simplify complicated issues so that beginners may begin to learn.

  2. This book might be good as a simple review for children interested in kennels. I found it to be very simplistic and filled with a lot of "common sense" information. If you are really interested in reading it, check your local library, it is just not worth the money.

  3. A major disappointment for the serious kennel builder. Its only merit, perhaps, is as a starting point for further research in kennel design and management. It has very, very few useful tips or practical advice a kennel builder needs to make educated decisions when constructing or modifying a kennel. Management suggestions are simplistic at best and leave the reader with more questions than answers. Provides almost no advice in the most practical and crucial areas such as what kinds of paint and construction materials are best suited for kennels, or how to effectively heat and cool, structure a drainage system, etc. Although there are less than a handful of books on this subject, steer clear or consider this book a starting point for more research. I just completed a huge boarding and dog training facility and didn't find one truly helpful tip from this book.

5 comments about Successful Dog Adoption.

  1. While the author's test may not be 100% accurate, her premise is that one should be VERY careful in adopting dogs in order not to get an aggressive dog. This is something that most other adoption books gloss over. The author is concerned that many agencies seeking to have dogs adopted are more concerned with getting the dog a home than in protecting the adopting owner. Why adopt trouble?

I've had 12 dogs in my life and am thinking of adopting when my 12 year old dog dies. I've been reading as many books as I can about adopting dogs and adult dog behavior and this is one of the best that I've found.

  2. Dogs need our help. Thousands die every day simply because they do not have a home. If you are involved in fostering, breed rescue or simply love dogs, read this book to learn about how to evaluate dog temperament. If you are looking to adopt a dog, this book will teach a scientifically proven effective method of evaluating a dog's personality.

  3. I bought two books on dog adoption, this book being one of them. I really didn't get my money's worth from this book. The tests that the author advised just are not practical. If people did what she said, no shelter dogs would ever get adopted. In general, other books on dog adoption have a lot more practical advice than this one. This book was not a total loss, I did learn a few things from it. But, all in all, it was not worth my money.

  4. What a great book! It is very well written, authoritative without being condescending, easy to understand without being simplistic and sometimes downright funny. I started reading at random and just could not put it down. Recommended for anybody who wants to adopt a dog - even if you do not believe in or want to try the test described in the second part of the book, there is a wealth of information on the first 100 pages alone.
I feel I have a much, much better chance now of finding the "Love of my life" dog we are all hoping for.

  5. As a parent of 3 who is looking into getting a dog and has seen a very strong anti-family/anti-child bias among shelter and rescue groups, I really appreciate this book. Her section on reading the internet ads was especially enlightening, since all shelters within a decent driving distance from me do most of their advertising on Petfinder. If we do decide to adopt a dog, I feel much more confident not only evaluating the dog, but evaluating the shelter.

5 comments about Superpuppy: How to Choose, Raise, and Train the Best Possible Dog for You (How to Choose, Raise, and Train the Best Possible Dog for You).

  1. Some good advice unfortunately offset by some questionable instructions, e.g. suppositories if you are too lazy to wait for your dog to relieve itself, dragging the leash as a means of training, flea collars so toxic that they should be taken off in confined areas. On balance, this book probably does as much harm as good.

  2. This is the best dog book I ever read. If you are thinking of getting a puppy, get this book! It's not hard to read and by the time you are done, you will feel like the best dog expert on the block. Some people might get scared at the size but I gurantee those books that tell you that their supposed to be a junior pet care book only tell you that you should be good owner. This book has a great descripition for how you should take care of a dog. It even includes information about advanced training. BUY THIS BOOK!

  3. Before you get a dog, buy this book! From a terrific "Puppy Scoring" test to help select the right pup for you out of a litter, to practical tips on teething and house training, this book is the best. Used it extensively to raise what became The Best Dog in the World -- their tips helped her be house trained within 2 weeks of coming home (never another accident!). I have given 15 copies of this book as gifts when friends have said they were thinking about getting a dog. If you buy a dog book, buy this one!

  4. I read this book when I was a little kid with my first puppy, and I checked it out at the school library. I read it from cover to cover about 20 times. It was amazing, and it helped me as a 12 year old to raise my dog. I loved it so much that I am recommending it for my Mom to use for her new puppy. It was very friendly and very helpful, and so appropriate to raising happy healthy dogs. This book is timeless. I can't wait to read it again.

  5. This is the first of what is now have a whole shelf full of dog books, and it is still my all-time favorite puppy raising book. It was a wonderful book to have handy while raising my first puppy, and I used it a lot. The training information and common problems section is quite good. I really like thier information on choosing a dog, and if you should even have one. It's a very understandable, and easy to use introduction to responsible dog ownership and how to have a happy, healthy puppy, all written in a very friendly tone. It gave me a great foundation to help my now adult dog be such a wonderful, very well behaved dog, and the envy of other dog owners.

  1. I have been doing dog rescue for 18 years, and am always looking for imformative dog books. Although this book is written for children, it has some interesting facts that I was not aware of. It is easy reading and has some great tips. I can hardly wait until "How To Speak Cat" is released!

5 comments about Running North: A Yukon Adventure.

  1. Running North is an excellent book for anyone interested in Alaska or mushing. Ann Mariah Cook captures the feel for Alaska and dog sledding perfectly. Even if you have no true interest in the subject you will find your self swept into the wonderful world of dog sledding. Cook clearly brings to life the people they met, friends they made, and the hazards that tried to stop them from running the Yukon Quest. One of the most grueling races in the world. I found I learned a great deal from this book without it ever becoming boring or slowing down. And most importantly she tells about the dogs, the wonderful creatures who work so willingly for us. Sometimes heartbreaking sometime funny, this book is an interesting, exciting read for anyone.

  2. Subtitled, "A Yukon Adventure," Ann Mariah Cook's fascinating 1998 memoir chronicles the time in 1992 that she, her husband George and three-year old daughter moved to Alaska to participate in the Yukon Quest, the toughest sled dog race in the world. It was George who ran the race; Ann was the one who drove the truck, carried the gear, took care of their daughter and gave him moral support through the long months of training, and eventually through the grueling event.

I've read other books about dog mushing, but this one had the unique point of view of a woman who, while not actually on the sled during the race, experienced her own Yukon Quest experience. She writes clearly and honestly, not shying away from the disagreement that she had with the young woman they brought with them to act as the official "handler" of the dogs. She writes about George's experience on the trail, his frostbite, fatigue, narrow escapes and indomitable spirit as he pitted himself against natural forces over which he had little control. She writes about the dogs, their personalities and backgrounds and about the tough choices she and George had to make when it came time to pick the actual team of 12 out of their much larger group. She writes about the people they meet along the way, her Alaskan neighbors, fisherman, storekeepers and the other mushers. And she writes about Alaska itself, making me yearn to experience its beauty and majesty.

There was one small line drawing of the Yukon Quest trail and I kept returning to it again and again as the book moved along and the tension mounted. There is also a photo of Ms. Cook and one of her dogs on the back cover. I wish there were more photos, but I didn't really need them because her descriptions were so clear. Recommended.

  3. This book was one of the greatest ones I have ever read. I race sled dogs, and I found it so interesting...I could and have felt everything they go through. Also my grandmother who bought the book for me said she started reading it one night and read it the whole thing that night, and she has never raced and knows nothing about it, and she LOVED it. So it is a good book for anyone to read!!

  4. What a pleasant surprise to read a literary and exciting story of Alaska and dog-racing. Thoroughly enjoyable. I totally recommend this book to all adventure lovers.

  5. Fascinating details of the "Cook Team" in the greuling Yukon Quest are revealed in this book. Ann and her husband move to Alaska from the eastern United States so that they can experience "real" dog sled racing. Their adventure is difficult from the beginning; however, they eventually grow to love the Alaskan atmosphere. Despite much adversity, from friends and neighbors, about their inexperience, George and Ann enter the Yukon Quest. Details about survival, cultural adjustment, and everlasting memories are enriched in this educational book about the Yukon Quest.

1 comments about Boxers (Animal Planet Pet Care Library).

  1. The pages within this book have a very attractive setup which makes the book and the text very appealing to read. Nobody wants to read plain informative text, especially not children. The text is guided with clear, colorful images of both cropped and uncropped boxers (always short tails) as well as boxes containing extra information, expert advice, senior boxer tips and family-friendly tips for improving the relationships between children and their boxers.

Cynthia P. Gallagher did a very good job with this book. Although it does not look like such a big book it does contain a huge collection of information on boxers. It was a good idea to include the senior dog tips because you are not always buying a new puppy. You can adopt a dog that was left or rescued or still needs to be rescued. In the last case an appropriate book on dealing with rescue dogs will probably be necessary though. When I was little I did not like to read books but I'm sure that I would have loved to read this one. Also I'm sure no boxer lover can pass by this book after seeing the cutest, most beautiful boxer pup on the book cover, with his big, sad eyes that are watching you, asking to "please take me home".
