5 comments about Cesar's Way: The Natural, Everyday Guide to Understanding and Correcting Common Dog Problems.

  1. I purchased this product after viewing a collection of Cesar's dvd's. They don't provide "How to..." for training a dog to do "Things"(sit, down, etc.) but they are very insightful in understanding how to have a good relationship with your pet as dog and master. The book has helped us get off to a good start with our new puppy.

  2. this book is an inspiration and insight into the life of cesar and the work he does, if you like watchinig his shows you have to read this book. it is one of those books you just can't put down you have to read it to the end.

  3. Maureen and Gary Ross wrote the nothing short of incredible TRAIN YOUR DOG, CHANGE YOUR LIFE, using insights from the Delta Society, which uses dog training in human therapy. (Available on Amazon and Kindle).

Cesar's popular training method of exercise, discipline (now called positive reward, gentle training, whispering, etc.), and then love, as well as insights about the energy we radiate, are truly innovative. NOW, he's likely read or seen the Ross's work, or read up on the Delta Society, and is actively writing/ speaking about HUMAN interaction as it relates to dog training. The key human insight in all this is: We TEACH others how we want to be treated.

If our dogs (or our human companions!) treat us badly, it's because we are teaching them, often unconsciously, to do so. The insight, learned a decade ago with birds and dolphins who can simply swim or fly away, is that negative reinforcement doesn't work, but only TEACHES the student to treat US badly. Positive energy, plenteous rewards, and not reinforcing the negative treat the student to treat us well, and behave well.

We train many species in our petcarelicense.com programs and at our clinics, and are learning with the Rosses that HUMAN relationships can benefit from understanding Dog training. A dog is a creature molded out of pure love, but to understand behavior problems, radiating calm energy is reassuring to start, lots of play and exercise is a path to showing our gentle but alpha status, and "discipline" is about giving lots of string cheese for the times we're treated right (the behavior is appropriate).

Prediction: Cesar will be coming out with more and more books that show how learning dog training can help with every aspect of ALL our relationships, including human!

  4. I bought this book for my daughter who just adopted a 5 year old Chihuahua, Lulu from a puppymill. I know Cesar's knowledge will be a great help to them because Lulu is afraid of everything. She's never been socialized and will need a lot of patience. My daughter needs training too.

  5. I have to admit, I was skeptical about Ceasars methods. No that he could do it, but that we would be able to read a book and get results like on his TV series. I just did not believe, we could make his magic work for us as well. We have 3 Shih Tzus, and they get on very well, but my wife read this book, and they are now a pack :)

I never could walk them together on leashes, as a matter a fact I never used leashes. We just went out into the yard and they did thier Business. Well my wife has adpoted Ceasars methods, which include walking the dogs, and exercise as well as affection. It works, even for a simple guy like me who just wants a lap dog :)

Page 57 sums up the relationship, I had with my favorite pet. All love and affection. I lost her in a tragic accident, at my own hand. After time, we added two more for a total of 3 Shh Tzu's. I still wanted that "all love and affection" dog Trixie was, but realized I had to take Ceasar's words to heart. From page 57...."please open your mind to the possiblilty that your dog may be missing some of the things she needs to be happy in and fufilled as a dog". Well I opened my mind (with my wifes help :)) and I really beilieve the dogs are happier.

That line would be my best advice for anyone to read this book. Open your mind, to what Ceasar is teaching and you will find that with some time and patience this book, his work, will give you a better relationship with your dog or dogs.

Thank you Ceasar, you may have saved my marriage as well. LOL :)

5 comments about Be the Pack Leader: Use Cesar's Way to Transform Your Dog . . . and Your Life.

  1. There is nothing new in Milan's training methods. He has just rehashed the outdated stuff of the '80s and earlier. Truly modern dog training seeks to form a relationship between dog and human, one based on mutual respect.

Yes, one can get results with his methods, but response based on fear is shallow and fleeting at best. That is, unless one keeps the poor dog terrorized. He appeals to people because of his emphasis on human dominance over dogs. There are dozens--make that hundreds--of trainers with more worthwhile advice to offer. I suggest that the person who wants a friend and companion instead of a cringing syncophant listen to them.

  2. again cesar proves that it is not the dogs that have the problems it is the humans that cause them through our lack of information and experience and also our actions of assuming we can treat a dog like a human and it still behave like a dog and picking the wrong breed of dog for our own lifestyle. excellent read a must buy

  3. Millan's methods are both outdated and dangerous, the alpha roll being one of the better known and more dangerous of them. The term was first coined by the Monks of New Skete, who (as well as Millan) base the technique on wolf research. However that research has since been disproved, and even the Monks of New Skete have retracted this method and discourage people from doing it. Yet Millan continues, in spite of current research on behavior and learning processes in animals. An alpha roll is a very good method for getting your face bit off by a dog. That and scaring a dog.

His dominance centered methods sound great, but fall far short of reality. Dogs do not live in rigid structures, but rather dominance is fluid and highly situational. Again, current wolf research from the last several years supports this and debunks previous beliefs of how wolf society works. In addition, its problematic when you attempt to take wolf society and apply it to a human-dog pack - its not a cookie cutter mold that can be applied everywhere.

Millan does get some things right, because he is accurate that you do need to be a leader to your dog. Its his methods that are dangerous and harmful. You need not dominate your dog in order to lead. For more information on methods that work better and without the pitfalls of dominance and punishment based training, refer to trainers and actual PhD behaviorists such as Patricia McConnell, Pat Miller, Ian Dunbar, Karen Pryor, Victoria Stilwell (who has a show on Animal Planet,) Nicholas Dodman, and so many more who advance both science based training, and methods that foster cooperation and respect as well as joy between your dog and you.

  4. After reading "Cesar's Way" it looks like I'm in for more of the same thing. I haven't quite finished the book, but I'm afraid I'm going to get tired of reading the same thing over and over. I learn more from the videos and the show so I've decided to just order those. However, I firmly believe Cesar is right and you have to 'train' the people, not the dog. If the owner is a true pack leader, the dog will naturally follow along!

  5. Wether you own a dog or just want to brush up on your skills as a leader in society, this book offers inspiration and great tools.

5 comments about Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog.

  1. I really enjoyed this book. It reminded me of the antics of my own puppy. The book centers around a dog but it's really about a family. This book is filled with love and has really helped me get through the last very stressful week. I was laughing out loud at some parts.

  2. Marley is a Labrador retriever, a wonderful " bad boy" typical Labrador style dog.
I cried and felt every minute of his life unfolding in this book. Marley was 100% soul in motion like every other of his race.
Unfortunately, his owner (like probably 99% of owners) had no idea what he got. Probably for Mr. Grogan a Yorkie would have been better...
    Marley, rest in peace.
The 5 stars are all for you!

  3. Whenever I speak to someone about my dog, the person invariably responds with some variation of one of the three following questions:
    (1) Have you tried hiring a professional trainer?
    (2) Have you tried using a _______ (insert canine control device here; i.e., Halti Head Harness, choke collar, anti-pull harness, zapper collar, citronella collar, dog whistle, clicker, etc...)?
    (3) Is he neutered?

The answer to all three of these questions is yes, in whatever form they are asked. We have tried it all, and we still can't have houseguests without warning the people ahead of time NOT to wear open-toed shoes and, despite the fact that we live in Florida and it's 90-plus degrees, long pants would be advisable. Not suprisingly, we have very few visitors.

My dog, Cyrus, has done all of the terrible things a dog can do. He flipped over a table he was tethered to at Starbucks, and then dragged it across the patio until it became jammed between two other tables he took out along the way. He has, much to the chagrin of her mother, humped a five year old in front of a large gathering of people (interestingly, that was the only person he ever tried it on). He has been rejected (yes, flat-out rejected) from a canine "boot camp," which we drove three hours to just for an interview. He has nearly jumped out of the car window while we were traveling at a high rate of speed. He has broken his leash and charged off in random directions to see random people, usually scaring the bejesus out of whoever he decided to go visit. And he has eaten every imaginable object a dog can possibly eat. And when I say every, I mean EVERY. Area rugs, shampoo, sleeves off of shirts, shoelaces (but never shoes themselves for some odd reason), underwear, tea towels, coasters, books, drywall (he chewed a hole through a wall in our apartment one afternoon while I was grocery shopping), window blinds, two broiler pans, Chef Boyardee cans, an entire set of steak knives (only the handles, though, THANK GOD), dirty Kleenex by the pound, toothbrushes, spools of thread, and all of the embarassing stuff that ends up in the bathroom garbage. And the best part of that is that whatever embarassing object it is will ALWAYS get stuck on its way out, thereby requiring me to assist in its removal. In public. There are few things more humbling that removing a feminine hygiene product from your dog's butt five feet away from your apartment complex's pool while several horrified people look on.

My friend Barb still describes him as "the dog who ate a car stereo." And it's true. He did. Box and all. In his medical records, there is a note in the margin, handwritten by my vet. It says, "PICA?!?!" I would say, although he has outgrown it for the most part (except for the bathroom garbage), that the answer to that was, at one time, a definite yes.

In spite of all that, or maybe because of that, I love him. I love everything about him. The way he smells when he needs a bath. The way he sneezes in my face when smoke from my cigarette drifts to close to his face. The way he snores so loudly that I have to have a fan on my nighstand running all night to block out the noise. The way he smacks me awake while I'm sleeping so I will lift up the covers for him to climb under them.

And I also love the way he snuggles up to me at night, that he loves to sleep in late, the fact that he is always severely distressed by me crying, that he will give hugs and kisses upon request, that he will do anything to protect me, and that, no matter how much of a piece of crap I feel like, he is so excited to see me when I get home that dancing and doing laps around the house are the only adequate ways to express his joy.

The reson why I love this book so much is that it finally proves my theory that there are other people out there like me--people who love a dog that someone else--okay, maybe the rest of the US population--would describe as "terrible" or "horrible" or, GASP, even "incorrigable"--a favorite of his last trainer. And despite the fact that he is not Cesar Milan-approved, he is still, to me, the best dog in the entire world. I would never trade him in for Lassie or Rin-Tin-Tin. I mean, how many times did Timmy have to rush Lassie to the vet at 3AM because she decided that the Windex she stole from under the sink looked delicious? Perfection is boring. It is our flaws that make us unique, and it is adoration of those flaws that make us loved. The same is true with dogs.

  4. This was the first book I purchased for my new Amazon Kindle - and I could hardly put it down - from the begining John Grogan draws you into Marley's world of mischief. As I finished the book, i could barely see the words for the tears in my eyes - this is a wonderful heartwaming, laugh outloud story told by a master storyteller. I highly recommend it.

  5. I loved this book. It made me laugh and cry (sometimes within pages of each other). The twists and turns of the story are John Grogan and his family's everyday twists and turns. That is the beauty of the story.

As we live our "ordinary" everyday lives we are creating powerful memories that shape who we are as people. When we tell of our memories they can, as in Grogan's case, shape other peoples lives as well. Marley & Me is a touching story full of beautiful memories that are worth sharing.

5 comments about 101 Dog Tricks: Step by Step Activities to Engage, Challenge, and Bond with Your Dog.

  1. My mini dachshund and I have had a blast learning the tricks in this book- they're easy and fun to teach and make dog training so much easier! And my puppy loves learning them too.

  2. I AM JUST DISAPPOINTED BECAUSE THIS BOOK HAS A LOT THAT ONLY BIGGER DOGS CAN DO. MY DOG IS A 3LB POODLE AND WOULD NEED A LADDER TO OPEN THE DOOR,IT CANT GET THE TELEPHONE BECAUSE ITS TOO HEAVY, I WOULD NEVER HAVE IT LEARN TO WALK ON A LADDER..THERES JUST A LOT OF BIG DOG TRICKS N NOT THE SMALL DOG TRICKS

  3. While I am a many time author and know it's proven that the "101..." titles sell, I usually shy away from them. But thanks to the reviews on Amazon I bought this book. As reviewers wrote, this book is excellent.
It's the "Dog Tricks" part that suggested it isn't a serious dog training book; but serious it is. Yes, some of these could be called "tricks", but all of the basics that are so necessary to teach one's dog to get along in the human world are there: sit, down, stay, come, etc.
The way the book is laid out with two pages for each exercise and the clear writing and backup information makes it super easy for a complete novice to understand and teach themselves and then their dog these exercises.
Dogs love to please us and doing these positive training exercises truly works. Do him or her a favor and stick to a daily training plan.

  4. This book has been great!! I am on my 2nd copy, as I gave the first one away to a friend who fell in love with it, and am planning on buying a 3rd copy to send to another friend.

This book is very easy to follow and a pleasure to page through. The photo's are fun, and make it a good pick for kids, who might not enjoy reading directions, as you can pretty much just follow the pictures. It includes hand signals and verbal cues, a lists of previous tricks to be mastered, and skill level. Whenever I run into a problem I go to the 'trouble shooting' section in the margin next to each trick, and it always has anticipated the snag and offers a helpful solution.

So far my chihuahua can sit, lay down, beg, shake hands, twirl, and roll over!! Not bad for a breed known for being yappy and being carted around like Cleopatra in handbags! I have had the book for about 5 months. We work all the tricks every night after her dinner. It's her 'school' and she loves it! I think she has become more confident since we started training. I know she feels very proud of herself when she does it right.

    I highly recommend this book.

  5. Everything you need is right here. Gorgeous layout, detailed instructions, lots of pictures, every trick you could want and more.
Get ready to have the dog that's the life of the party. Enjoy!

2 comments about The Well-Adjusted Dog: Dr. Dodman's Seven Steps to Lifelong Health and Happiness for Your BestFriend.

  1. I wrote a book over 13 years ago called "The Well Adjusted Dog" Canine Chiropractic Methods You Can Do. Myself and my publisher spent a lot of time and money marketing it. I can't think of anything more obnoxious than someone else using the same title and simply inserting a hyphen between the first two words of the title then calling it their own. What an original thinker. I wish I could give this book zero stars, but that is not an option on Amazon.com.
I have no respect for this author and will not give this book the time of day or listen to anything else he has to say.
Oh, I think I'll write the great American novel and call it "Gone-With The Wind." Do you think anyone would get this confused with a similar title?
    Daniel Kamen, D.C.

  2. I found Dr Dodman's book very helpful in my search for a new puppy and the first weeks of training him. I think every new dog owner should read this book!

5 comments about It's Me or the Dog: How to Have the Perfect Pet.

  1. Love the show and her method of training because she uses positive reinforcement. It was very helpful and have tried a few of her techniques on my dogs and it has made things a lot calmer and better. I was even able to teach my dogs some tricks and was surprised how quickly they learned because she explains it in such a simple way. I highly recommend this book to anyone who owns a dog.

  2. I bought this book after seeing Victoria Stillwell's program on Animal Planet. What I liked was her simple approach to dog training and her book is exactly that. As a first time dog owner I was challenged by my rescue dog who had never been on a leash before I adopted her let alone gone potty outside or been trained at all. At almost 6 months, she was becoming a rowdy teenager with no manners!

After a month, she's better. There's still a ways to go but this book helps a lot with exactly how to train, how to reinforce the training, and how to bond with your dog. I highly recomment it!

  3. I got some new insights into dog behavior from this book. It helped us understand our corgi better. We are practicing several of Victoria's techniques now - with positive results. (I guess we'll keep our pooch and try to fix him.)
This book is easy to read and understand.

  4. Best dog training guide ever! I used this book to help me solve my problems I had with my 65lb Labrador Retriever pulling on the lead, being unfriendly toward strange dogs, barking, and his mild separation anxiety. I highly recommend getting this book for your dog training needs.

  5. I used to watch the show and thought that things happened too fast on screen, so I needed something handy that I could check any time I had doubts. For me it was a good surprise to find this book. It gives a lot of tips, explains many behaviors, and everything looks reasonable and obvious somehow! It's my bedside book right now, when I have to deal closely with my family "crazy" labrador. I didn't give it 5 stars because I couldn't find all the answers to my questions. But it sure was a very good start!

5 comments about The Barbecue! Bible.

  1. The text part is great, but I was very disappointed that there are so few photos in the book. I would not have bought if I had known that.

  2. My husband picked this book up and we've had so much fun for the past 6 weekends or so trying out new things to put on the barbeque!
Can't wait to try the next one now!
It's worth every cent; I'm impressed with how closely authentic Steven's kept all the recipes!

  3. Where this book fails immediately is that Barbecue is not about the sauce it's about the meat. I know, I design sauces and own a BBQ Sauce Company. I'm always looking for good BBQ cookbooks. The author gives no information on preparation of meat or cooking it. He spent 13 pages on how to light different grills and I wasn't impressed much with that. I think the big headlines were used to waste space so that he could put out a big book. I could go on but here is one final thought. The book claims to be the Barbecue Bible, you'd expect it to cover the subject in every detail and with some degree of experience. This attempt at being the Barbecue Bible fails miserably. I bought the book online, if I saw the book in a book store and was able to go through it, I would not have bought it. Steven Raichlen is probably a food critic or cookbook editor, not a barbecue expert.

  4. This book was recommended by Epicurious before it was published, so I was excited to see it when it came out. I popped on amazon to buy it, read some reviews (negative) and decided to pass. Several people complained that the recipes were complicated and required lots of specialty ingredients. When I saw the book at my local warehouse club I gave it a look. I was very impressed and snapped it right up!

I'm the type who reads cookbooks like novels, and I am an experienced cook who likes to dabble in every sort of cuisine imaginable. I'm also a condiment/seasonings/spices nut, so I have an extremely well-stocked pantry. That said, in reading through the book, I didn't come across any recipes for which I didn't have the ingredients. I realize, however, that the average person does not have tamarind paste or sambal olek in their fridge, nor galangal or scores of middle eastern seasonings in the pantry. But, if I can find that stuff at my local markets (the Super Target, for goodness sake!), surely these ingredients are easily obtained. And there are plenty of recipes in this book that do not require "exotic" ingredients, if your tastes or budget doesn't run to that.

The book is very broad in its scope - cocktails, salads, meats, veggies, sides, even desserts - so it is far more useful than simply a book on grilling meats. I also appreciated the explanations of techniques, histories of cuisines, definitions of terms, etc. This type of information not only equips one to execute the recipes in the book well, but experiment and develop dishes on one's own. There is also an extensive section on rubs, marinades and sauces for just such experimenting.

I think this book would be enjoyed by the following types of cooks:

-those enjoy trying new cuisines, new flavors and new techniques
-those who want to expand their bbq/grilling repertoire
-those who are adventurous cooks (and diners!) who either have a well-stocked pantry or would find other uses for some of the more unique ingredients (lots of Thai, Asian and middle-eastern ingredients)
-those who appreciate a cookbook that provides an entire meal's recipes, not just the entree.

If you like your food pretty plain or you're cooking for picky eaters who won't try anything they haven't heard of, this book is soooo not for you. Bob appetit!

  5. The Barbecue Bible website promotes this as the illustrated version of the original. I really liked the original; I think the author is great and have many of his books. I had purchased the original many years ago, and was willing to pay for it again upon the premise of seeing a picture of the recipes prepared.
While there is new text with interesting information, there aren't that many recipes that are illustrated. This was a huge letdown; I was very interested in seeing pictures of completed recipes I had tried.
If you haven't purchased this, I don't think you will be disappointed, as it really is an amazing cookbook; it really teaches you a lot about the world's flavors. If you have already purchased it, and are like me, anticipating pictures of prepared dishes, you will be disappointed. How to Grill is lavishly illustrated and will probably be a better investment if you are visually oriented. To summarize, Stephen is a very impressive author and very interesting to read for the first time; I wish it was illustrated more extensively.

5 comments about How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With.

  1. This is the best book I've found on raising a puppy. Especially helpful is the week by week detailed description of what a new owner may expect developmentally from the puppy, and what the puppy needs for each stage of growing. I've given this book to every new puppy parent I've known!

  2. This book is a MUST for all new puppy owners! It will tell you when to do what with your puppy so you can raise a puppy that you will be happy to have around and proud to own. Also great for all breeders- it goes into the first 8 weeks as well and what should be done to raise well adjusted puppies.

  3. i thought this book was easy enough to read. it explained everything you needed... gets straight to the point and has good explanations of your puppy at a certain level or age. im planning to get a puppy and after reading this book, i know a lot more about how to take care of one. i feel ready.

  4. This book is invaluable in the way it describes each stage of the puppy's development (both physical and psychological). It eqips you to answer the age-old question: Why is my puppy behaving this way???

Also, after reading this book, you will understand why you should always purchase your pup from a breeder ... and NEVER from a pet store.

  5. Great book with common sense ideas. I have raised many dogs over the years and this book offers sensible advice that hadn't even occurred to me.

5 comments about Merle's Door: Lessons from a Freethinking Dog.

  1. For the hard core dog lover. This is a wonderful dog story; well written, beautiful and heart warming.I own the reincarnation of Meryl. I treasure him more after reading this book. Folks, it doesn't get any bettor than this. Please buy the book!

  2. Merle's Door is not just a book -- it is a gift. It is a gift that you will not be able to put down. It is a gift to have the opportunity to share with Merle and Ted their time together, to read the scientific facts that are added for our edification, and to experience the world through their eyes. If you had never been a dog owner or owned by a dog, this book will make you think that something had been missing in your life, and you will be right.

We all need to make our times with our animals -- dogs, cats, birds, whatever -- as full as Ted and Merle made theirs.

  3. After listening to this book, I talked to my dogs a lot more, I danced with them and sang with them. I listened and looked and noticed every nuance of what they each had to tell me. I paid attention to them and noticed that they pay attention to me.
Not only is the story real and honest and warm, it teaches you all about the canine in your family.
The reader, Patrick Lawlor, had to know and love Merle and I felt every little emotion of his. His reading was superb and heartfelt. The best part were his conversations with his dog, Merle.
Now that I have finished reading, I miss Merle terribly and I find myself looking at other dogs and wondering if that was how Merle was.

This is a must read for anyone who loves dogs.

  4. I laughed, I cried, I healed, I shared. This is without a doubt one of the best books I have read in a long time. I fell in love with Merle and Brower... and with my dogs all over again. I learned important information and escaped into the wonderful story. I savored each page resisting its inevitable end. My choices of how I raised and dealt with the aging and death of my dogs were validated. I simply had to share this book with those friends who love dogs, so I have sent them copies. If you love dogs, READ this book.

  5. I borrowed this book from the library before purchasing it for a friend. Anyone who enjoyed the book Marley and Me will love it! Wonderfully written, and it makes you think about your relationships with dogs. Awesome information about studies done on dogs and wolves, just a great book overall for anyone who has a dog. This book also included pictures of Merle and his owner which was a big perk for me. I would recommend this book to anyone.

  1. Don't go into this book expecting a manual and you will not be disappointed. It's a conversationally delivered comparisson of primates and canid behaviors, and how they sometimes (often) conflict, with some stories that make it all seem more relevant to real life, mixed in. I enjoyed this book because I find this topic fascinating. The next time I trained a dog after reading this book, I was more aware of what I was doing, and the training went much more easily. When studying Ethology, I've found that people don't like to think of themselves as animals, and not necessarily controlling absolutely every signal other animals perceive, so it may offend some people to compare primates to humans, but I think the comparissons are helpful and find them extremely relevant.

If you are looking for a manual on training, I suggest Beginning Family Dog Training, also written by Patricial McConnell. It IS a manual, and the majority of the dissatisfied reviews about this book I've seen would probably have been eliminated if they'd read that book too. Having trained animals for a while now, I would suggest reading both of them, but not having expectations of a manual from The Other End of the Leash.

If you're interested in communicating with animals, dogs in particular, this can be a very interesting read. Using bodily signals you aren't really aware of, you're communicating all of the time. This book helps to point them out, make you aware of them, and gives advice on increasing the helpful ones and eliminating the not-so-helpful ones. You end up training yourself, and really helping your dog understand what you want communicate, and not just what they've seen you communicating.

  2. PLEASE read this book!!! I would recommend this to anyone wanting to understand dogs better and become a better dog owner!

  3. I have learned a lot about the way my two pups think. The author explains how to use their thought process to make them modify their behavior and how to get them to accept differant situations. I have learned how to quite my dogs when they are barking at nothing and I have learned how to get them to come almost effortlessly. I would highly recommend this book to any dog owner that would like a better behaved dog.

  4. This book provides truly wonderful insight into the human/dog relationship. It is a must read for all those who love dogs. I am humbled by Dr. McConnell's wisdom. This is one book it was a privilege to read!

  5. This is a well written book. I do some traveling and was a great read on the plane.
