5 comments about Guide to Owning a Ragdoll Cat.

  1. I have owned a Ragdoll for several years, but this book really taught me some things I didn't know. An informative and very accurate book that will help each of us to understand and care for our Ragdolls in a better way. This book is the BEST Ragdoll book on the market! My opinion ...

  2. It's a very handy small book, but fully informative, having plenty of super cute photos. If you are thinking of buying a ragdoll cat, it will be perfect for you.

  3. Excellent reference for Ragdoll owners. This book is so comprehensive you won't need anything else. All you need to know about your Ragdoll and more.

  4. I bought this book last week, and have had a lot of fun reading it! We added a Ragdoll cat to our family last year, and I had been looking for a good book about Ragdolls! It gives history of the breed's origin, the special nature of the breed, etc. It is just what I thought I was buying. If you have a Ragdoll, or are planning to get one, this will be a fun and useful tool for you!

  5. A wonderful amount of information in a little pocket guide ... I enjoyed this book and found it very useful. It has been difficult to find much information on this wonderful breed, and Ms. Nelson has done a great job trying to impart as many facts as possible while keeping the book a manageable size.

5 comments about The Cat Owner's Manual: Operating Instructions, Troubleshooting Tips, and Advice on Lifetime Maintenance (Quirk Books).

  1. My roommate owns a cat so I bought this book as a gift for her birthday. She let me borrow it when she was done and I have to say, I learned a lot of cats! The book is very informative but very easy to read. The witty illustrations that accompanied it was just perfect. I also own the Dog manual and enjoy it greatly myself!

If you are looking for an informative book that is easy to read and comprehend, and enjoyable, this is the one for you. It covers practically everything to owning a Cat!

  2. A funny and great book for the first time cat owner, or anyone who loves cats.

Author of "Hobo Finds A Home" editor "Of A Predatory Heart"

  3. I read the book from cover to cover - it's an easy read for an informational book. I used it for a good overview and also have a more detailed "reference" book that I refer to if specific problems arise with my cat.

  4. I have come accross many cat books, dog books, and dog or cat books that are written in a funny style. This is one of those rare books that actually manages to succeed in everything it aspires to!

Not only is this book recent (2004), inexpensive, and hillariously written and illustrated, but it has all of the basic information a cat owner would need in an extremely USEFUL format. Man, how I wish I had this book when I first got my cat! It covers all of the questions other books could easily overlook, such as how to hold a cat, proper grooming, socialization, etc.... The format is just so... organized, it's easy to get an idea of where everything is, and the funny mechanical manual format is brilliantly integrated so that it does not interfere with either readability or clarity.

The only deficiency of this book is the lack of detailed medical information. This is not a bad thing in itself, though, as it allows for a shorter, clearer book. I would strongly recommend you to also purchase a veterinarian-written guide to cat health that covers all of the common medical problems. This would allow you access to information about vaccinations, what qualifies as an emergency or needs veterinary attention, and at-home solutions to medical problems without constantly questioning your vet. Such books include "Guide to a Healthy Cat" by Elaine Wexler-Mitchell, DVM (great, recent, inexpensive book - the only lack is that it doesn't go into as much depth as it should because it tries to be easy to understand), "Cat Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook" (a classic, in-depth book about almost every problem you might face - but not very up-to-date as it was written over 10 years ago), or "The Doctor's Book of Home Remedies for Dogs and Cats" (excellent in so many ways, but does not go into problems not treatable at home except to tell you when to take the animal to the vet).

  5. I picked this book up because I am a cat lover. When I started reading the book I found myself laughing as well as learning things I never knew about the care and training of my cat. It is formatted to read similiar to a automobile manual, which I thought was very humorous as well as a neat way to organize the information. I think it is a great guide for anybody who wants to learn more about the care and detail of having a feline friend.

2 comments about Starting from Scratch: How to Correct Behavior Problems in Your Adult Cat.

  1. Pam Johnson-Bennett is one of the best authors in the newly emerging field of cat behavior and this book is no exception. She offers no-nonsense, practical ways of understanding and dealing with your cat's quirks and problems. Her solutions are rarely the "QUICK AND EASY" variety (if you wanted that, I guess you should have gotten a pet rock). But this book goes a long way toward helping you understand your complex and mysterious little housemate. If you take the time to follow her instructions and do what she says, you will get results. Do it for your cat!

  2. Some of her methods are fine for a cat behaviorist or someone who has plenty of time (and no job) to spend catering to their kitty. I am a busy person who needs to socialize a rather "psycho" kitty to my already established one cat household. It has not gone well and if I practiced what this lady preaches I would be at this for years. It's a bit frustrating. Also I do not have a local cat behaviorist in my area to consult and my vet is more of the mind of - well just let the cats figure it out. I am still looking for advice. She seems dead set against using drug therapy on high-strung cats but if you cannot even handle the cat how can you practice all of these great techniques?

5 comments about Twisted Whiskers: Solving Your Cat's Behavior Problems.

  1. I have a multicat household and one of my kitty has a socialization problem while there is a predator in the house and one that is being continuously picked upon.
I bought two books thinking 'Twisted Whiskers' will help me solve the former while the 'Cat vs. Cat' will help me solve the latter.
It turns out that these two books are almost identical. They have same chapters with some updates on the 'twisted whiskers'.

  2. FOLKS....THIS IS IT. This book is exactly what we needed! Two years ago my husband Larry and I were forced to put down our BELOVED Buffy of 16 years due to numerous health issues and since then we have missed having a cat in our home. As I recently became physically disabled after 45 years of working, we wanted a young cat instead of a kitten because the kittens are always chosen first, leaving the young/older cats without a quiet, clean home. So three weeks ago we adopted Sassy (Siamese - 1 year old) and she is a handful! Imagine our shock when Sassy jumped up on our beautiful furniture and counter tops and our Buffy NEVER did! We needed direction and Pam Johnson-Bennett's book filled the bill. Her philosophies and training methods to break bad habits of an already abused cat have worked wonders. Thank you Pam for a no-nonsense manual to help us bond with Sassy and maybe she too will live another 16 years in our quiet, clean, no children, no other pets home. As homeowners, we would gladly adopt more cats if I could physically get around. But we will see ~ maybe Sassy will have a brother or sister soon. We will be ordering Pam's other books as well.

  3. I found "Twisted Whiskers" to be very helpful. I originally purchased the book for my son to help with his kitten's behavior issues but, after receiving the book and reading through it I found advice in it that helped with my four cats who are between ages 6 and 17. I found you can teach an old cat new tricks! I would heartily recommend this book to anyone with cat issues.Twisted Whiskers: Solving Your Cat's Behavior Problems

  4. Since I am a cat lover, I had to check this book out. This book truly helps with all aspects in the way of kitty care. I've read many books on what to do or not to do with kitty behavior problems but this one is on my must have list. If you have behavior problems with your kitty, start with this one. Easy to read and great detail and clear instructions. Plus she gives a holistic bend to it. Way cool! I've order four extra copy of this book to give to my friends as a gift. Every time I'm ordering books, I throw this one along with my order. I'll have an extra copy to give to someone who may need some help with their kitty.

  5. I found this book to be both helpful and enjoyable. I have a 5 month old kitten that I have had since 3 weeks of age when he was rescued by my son. Since we have had him from so young an age, he has had some socialization issues. This book has an extensive collection of problems and solutions that I have found to be interesting and easy to implement with my cat. I think it is definitely worth having as a resource.

  1. This is a wonderful book. It is a prequel to the Joe Grey mystery series by this author. Fascinating read!

  2. Maybe it's because I don't allow myself enough time to read pure fiction very often, but I LOVED this book! Truthfully, I think this is one of the best combinations of romance, fantasy and mystery that I've read. Of course, having cats play even a small role never hurts. Shirley Murphy is able to describe the places in her novel so well you can easily picture them in your mind. I couldn't put this book down! I highly recommend it.

  3. i love this odd and wonderful fantasy.
I bought this book used and when it was a rare find, that makes it much for sweeter.
I recommend this for anyone that loves fantasy and felines.

  4. I loved this book. I couldn't put it down. It is a real page turner. If you are a cat person you will really enjoy the parts of the book where the girl turns into a cat. Highly recommended.

  5. I needed a break from research reading one day and found this book at the local store before heading to the mountains to read it outdoors. It was the perfect book to sit in a lounge chair in the shade. As a cat person, I was drawn to the cover and the plot was, for the most part, enjoyable. A good, easy read for those looking for something light. Some of the sub-plots meandered a bit, but I figured it was a bit like a cat walking around a garden -- here and there. In the end, though, it was a nice break from the daily grind to read at one sitting.

5 comments about Pet Food Nation: The Smart, Easy, and Healthy Way to Feed Your Pet Now.

  1. This is a good book to read to gain some more insight into feeding your pets homemade food. It has many interesting ideas in it.

  2. I received this product dirty , with a lot of the pages stuck together, so I returned it for a refund

  3. The beauty of this book is it is packed with solid information AND provided in a fast and fun read. I have read multiple books on this topic and this one is certainly the easiest to put into action. This book's cat wet food recipes are quick and easy to make and of course much cheaper than "factual premium natural" or organic canned. It's only a Sunday event of an hour or less for me to make and freeze the following week's supply. Many of the healthier ingredients (can't afford ALL organic ingredients, but aim for 75%) needed for the recipes can be found here on Amazon at a much cheaper price than I can get locally. I have 5 cats and a few years ago (thanks to the DVD extras on Super Size Me) started my own journey for healthier human and pet food choices. Thanks to About.com, I switched from Purina and Iiams (yes I was fooled by the hype) to Natural Balance and Castor & Pollux Organix Feline and their non-organic cat food. While I still plan to use those brands, I recently happened upon By Nature's Organics (also make less expensive Naturals) and now this is my first choice back up supply for canned and primary source for dry food. They do not use wheat, corn or soy (Newman's and some other "natural and organic" use soy or all 3). Although it is not found in this book, those 3 fillers are the most common allergens for cats, plus it is very challenging for their digestive systems to process those and can cause significant health issues. It is best to use oatmeal (try McCann's-yummy for people and pets), brown rice, and barley. I stick w/ the rice and oatmeal since it is readily available in my pantry and it is easy to make extra while preparing it for myself. I also use organic coconut oil (does not turn rancid), which has amazing health benefits for people and pets alike. Sure it's a bit of a time commitment, but after a while it becomes routine and what better way to express your love and affection?

  4. I got this book looking for a solution to feeding my dogs food that I didn't see fit to feed myself. I was concerned about all of their nutritional needs being met as well. With this book, I found answers to all of my questions, helpful recipies and good information. If you are looking to step away from the commercial dog food, this would be a good book for you.

  5. In Pet Food Nation Weiskopf gives an overview of the pet food recall of recent months, even calling it a scandal, which I'm sure many would agree with. She wants pet owners to be informed and educated about what they feed regardless of how they choose to feed their pets. This book gives a brief overview of the recall and her views on the healthiest way to feed our pets to give them the best shot at a long and happy life.

Weiskopf's view on commercial food is that it is not the healthiest diet for our pets. She explains why she believes this is the case (explaining the use of rendered products and other ingredients) and talks about other options. While she recognizes there are many ways to feed pets...commercial, a combination of commercial and homemade, strictly homemade, raw, and so on...she encourages people to switch their pets over to homemade. She believes a diet of fresh and cooked foods is the most nutritious diet for our pets. And, if you do decide homemade is the way to go for your pet, you'll find quite a few recipes included in the book.

While her preference is to feed homemade, Weiskopf recognizes that won't work for everyone. With that in mind, she goes into how to read a pet food label - what the placement of ingredients means, what those ingredients actually are, and what terms like lite, low-calorie, and lean actually mean.

Pet Food Nation is a good book to read to get an overview of the current pet food situation and what changes you might want to consider making to your pet's diet as a result of all the recalls. Is it the only thing you should read on pet nutrition, different ways to feed your pets, or on this year's pet food crisis? Absolutley not, but it's a fast read and worth reading, especially if you haven't been watching the recall all that closely or feel a bit overwhelmed and unsure of what to feed your pet.

4 comments about 100 Cats Who Changed Civilization: History's Most Influential Felines.

  1. Bought this for a cat loving gal pal in her 40's. She is a history buff, well read and intelligent. She has an appreciation for the species as I do. This is a great little book gift for a great price! Very well written, and interesting. Would buy again, would recommend.

  2. I love this little book. You learn real historical facts about all kinds of kitty cats. Very informative and fun, I'm giving it to my sister as a birthday present. Anyone who loves cats would love this book!

  3. This book kept me in stitches! I was really surprised to find that one cat is credited for destroying a whole species. It puts them right up there with man himself. On the other hand, I hope to see a sequel soon to include Hemingway's cats and maybe even a couple of my cats. No? Oh, well... If you're my friend, expect to get your own copy for Christmas!

  4. As a cat lover and history buff, Sam Stall's book is wildly entertaining. It's amazing to think that a cat can have so much of an impact. Mine mostly just eat, sleep and give me dirty looks! So, you can imagine my surprise to learn of the huge accomplishments the cats described in the book had on history. I was laughing hysterically all night, much to the confoundment of my husband. You will truly enjoy this book and you might even learn something about those frisky felines we call our friends!

5 comments about Hiss and Tell: True Stories from the Files of a Cat Shrink.

  1. This book was extremely interesting to me because I love cats and it explained some of the puzzling behaviors that can arise. I found it fascinating that this woman was able to actually think like a cat to figure out what was causing the strange behaviors. It is both humorous and educational. It gives great insight into explaining various cat behaviors. I highly recommend it to any cat owner.

  2. I am the proud mother of three cats and two kids. Sometimes we all have problems living in sync with each other. This book let me know that there are many cat owners worse off than I am. All of the chapters were hilarious except for one. I wont say which one, but I cried for ten minutes after I read it. Everyone will really enjoy this treasure and it may tell you things about your kitties you never knew. According to the book, there are no such things as bad kitties, just miscommunications between kitties/owners.

  3. My husband got this book for me for Christmas and the next day I sat down and read the whole thing in one sitting. It is very engaging, and it gave me some insight into the zany behavior of my own two cats. Some of the stories were funny, some were sad but all were touching. I would highly reccomend this book for any cat lover.

  4. Excellent book, throughly enjoyed. The stories presented by Johnson-Bennett will make you laugh, even cry, and definately THINK! Reading these stories can give you insight in providing a more enriching homelife for your feline companion, maybe even tell you how your cat can tell you if your spouse cheating. This book is a page turner.

  5. I had the best experience while reading this book - a purring cat curled up in my lap. I laughed at some of these stories, cried at others (especially the one about Angel). The book also reinforced for me how important it is to have interactive play sessions with your cat each day.

5 comments about How to Get Your Cat to Do What You Want.

  1. As a life-long cat owner, I am always frustrated with how many owners give up on training their cats so quickly and easily (or just write them off because they are cats). Cats loved to be challenged and this book lays out easy and appropriate ways to teach and train, fix behavioral problems, and gently discipline your cat. Yes it takes patience, but both you and your cat will find it well worth the time.

  2. I found this book to be a bit over the top. The authors suggest extreme measures for control of undesirable cat behaviors requiring strict attention to detail. I love my rescue kitten dearly who is 5 months old now, but some ideas offered in this book seem unrealistic for me. I do believe the authors have the best interest of the cat in their strategies; however, I think some of the methods require impossible amounts of time. For those of us who are very disciplined, go for it!

  3. I had a hard time getting past the author's mania for adorable little furballs. Here's an example: "Are your well-deserved vacations spoiled because you just can't cope with the anxiety of leaving behind the little furball?". Those of you who answer yes will probably enjoy reading the book from cover to cover. Everyone else will do better looking up topics of interest, or reading a different book altogether. Having said that, there is some good information here, and an important message that you will be a better cat owner if you try to understand the cat's perspective. I suggest reading the Publishers Weekly review quoted by Amazon, because that nails it.

  4. Hmmmm... this book was a little too warm and fuzzy for me, and my cats still don't do what I want them to do. I like to call them my kitties of mass destruction.

I know the above statement doesn't really offer any constructive criticism so let me see if I can put into words what I didn't like about this book. Warren and Fay seem to be very caring and compassionate animal lovers but there didn't seem to be a whole lot of practical advice regarding getting cats to do what you want.

There were however, lots of cute stories about their animals sprinkled with a bit of advice - most of which I'd already heard. It was a nice read if you like animals (which I do) but not much help in the whole "getting them to do what you want" area.

  5. I found this book uninformative and a waste of money. I'm sorry that I din't buy a used book. This book was too cute with too many cute stories. I was more interested in learning about cat behavioral problems and how to solve them. I lost patience with this book. A very silly book.
