5 comments about Sunderlies Seeking: Ghatten's Gambit #1 (Ghatti's Tale).

  1. For some reason, Greeno starts this book off with 200 pages of complaining and self-pity that make you hate virtually every character. Well, what I imagine she's trying to do is show the tragic humanity of every character and how many complex problems they have, and the fact that they don't live happily ever after, but the effect is as I have described. Every book in the series thus far has started out this way, with Doyce feeling guilty over something stupid or being depressed or confused in some way. This is not the way to engage a reader's attention.

The action picks up a little as the book goes on, but I found myself skimming through the book to get to the dialogue and the occasional action sequences after I realized that 90 percent of the words add nothing to the story. I've read over a thousand books in my life and I've never done this before. I just can't get into the long descriptions and the narrated indecision as various characters consider whether or not they should act on information they have obtained, usually, of course, choosing not to and regretting it later.

I give this book three stars because it's not terrible but I wouldn't recommend it either. If you really like cats and own three or more, that might contribute to your enjoyment of this book. There are a lot of inside jokes for cat owners about how quirky cat personalities are. Some might find these cute; I don't.

  2. It starts off slowly as there's so much that has happened between the end of the last series and this one, but if you plough through it, it gets better. Not as good as the first three books, but still a worthwhile read as you are already involved with the characters.

  3. Although I love the ghatti series, this generation of characters just isn't as interesting. Diccon doesn't seem to do much and Jenneth really annoyed me...having her lose her memory was also cliched and one would think her Bondmate would still be able to reach her. Let's hope the characters grow up a bit more and acquire some dimension in future books

  4. Gayle Greeno has outdone herself in this book. It is a real page-turner! We enjoyed the first three books, the Gatti trilogy, but the first Gatten book is the best yet of the series. Doyce has retired from position as Seeker General and accompanies her husband and children on a trip to the Sunderlies. On the way to the seaport to catch their ship to the Sunderlies, it becomes apparent that someone is trying to sabotage their trip. On the sea, there are further problems which include one of Doyce and Jenret's twins and her bond being swept off of the ship in a great storm. There is intrigue all through the book and the author doesn't give away who are the good guys and who are the bad guys until the end of the book.

  5. A must read for anyone who enjoyed "The Ghatti's Tale" trilogy or someone looking for something new and different.

Starting sixteen years after "Exiles' Return", Doyce Marborn's and Jenret Wycherley's marrage is on shakey ground. On their twins, Diccon and Jenneth, sixteeth birthday, Doyce resigns as Seeker General and announces she will join her husband and children on their trip to Sunderlies.

The Sunderlies: land of exiled outlaws and those seeking a new life. This land is very different from mainland Canderis.

As the large party travels to port to leave for the Sunderlies, there are mishaps. Accidents or sabotage? Questions abond. While waiting for the ship to be readied, the twins are Chosen by young twin Ghatten. Diccon by Kwee and Jenneth by fat, shy Pw'eek.

On the sea trip to the Sunderlies, trouble strikes. Jenneth and Pw'eek are sweept overboard during a storm.

But this is only the tip of Greeno's masterpiece. For the Whycherley trade in the Sunderlies is being drained, very slightly, of its funds. There are old wrongs that fanatics feel must be revenged. Plus, there is political intrique to boot. The question becomes who will survive the voyage.

Greeno does a wonderful job of filling story with familiar chacters from the first trilogy and a slew of new characters from the Sunderlies.

  1. I've read many books on this subject and find this book to be out dated. Some of the author's recommendations are not up to today's standards.

  2. Juliette de Bairacli Levy is first and foremost one of the world's most famous herbalists. She lived and learned from the Gypsies of Europe how to grow and use medicinal plants for people and for animals. There is a wonderful video of her life by Tish Streeten called "Juliette of the Herbs". Cats Naturally is based on raising cats according to the cat rather than the human. Diet is determined in large part by their diet in the wild, medicines according to their own means of healing when left alone. There are herbal remedies for parasites and insects (mange, ear mites, ticks, lice, fleas & ringworm), and herbal remedies for digestive problems and other ailments. It is a great book and one I have used happily with my very beautiful and very healthy cats. This is a very sensible book by a very sensible, wise and loving woman.

5 comments about Cat Butts (Blue Q Kits).

  1. I bought these as a gag gift fo a friend and she loved them! The best part is the price is so low, that even if people don't like them you are only out a little bit. Honestly, the look on peoples faces is worth far more than these cost. Highly recommended for anyone with a sense of humor!

  2. I just received this as a gift today from my older brother. I laughed so hard when I opened the package at work that everyone had to come and see what was so funny. What a fantastically funny gift for the cat-lover in your life.

I will have to get a few more of these to send out myself!

  3. This product is hillarious to anyone who loves cats! A touch on the more vulgar side, but very funny nonetheless. Cheap way to get a laugh when you give a gift!

  4. My whole family loves cats and I got each of them one of these Cat Butts items and they loved it! The field guide tells you exactly how cats..and their butts...are. I chuckle every time I see those magnets on my refrigerator too!

  5. This is a great "anytime" gift to just let someone know you are thinking about them, and in this case a sibling living in another state who loves cats. It might also be a good prank for someone who did not like cats and frequently makes comments to that effect, but I haven't tested that approach. They definitely work if you want to "make" someone's day.

1 comments about Impressionist Cats.

  1. Feel like having a bit of whimsy? I bought "Impressionistic Cats" a number of years ago and have thoroughly enjoyed the art, the cats, and the cats in art. Definite whimsy! Might I add, the art is good enough to frame and hang.

(If no image displays for the cover, just click on the product and go to the product page. It will be there.)

This book is an amusing adaptation of Impressionistic art by making all the characters in each painting cats that resemble the characters. However, Susan Herbert has another explanation. She says that Professor Harvey Fishbone, a devout cat lover, collected these paintings and kept them undisclosed, allowing only cats to view them. Now his descendants are releasing these fine paintings for the world to see.

Oh, how I wish you could see the print opposite the title page. It is called "after Edgar Degas Absinthe 1876" and had me belly laughing. If you have seen the painting/print, maybe you remember the abysmal look on the poor woman's face. She has been drinking absinthe, the bane of drink at that time. The artist Susan Herbert, who has several other books with cats in the paintings, is quite talented. Not only does she capture the essence and detail--well, impression, ok, the look of the original painting, she knows her cats. You should see this look of the absinthe-drinking cat! Woe and begone! Come any closer and my claws will have your eyes. Something in that line.

"After Mary Cassatt The Loge c. 1882" is quite the opposite. Instead of stark and dreary, this is all sweetness and light. Two lovely young kitty women sit in the lower balcony, awaiting the opera. Ah, "after Paul Gauguin Tahitian Women 1891." Lovely, lovely cats, solid, earth-bound maidens of Tahiti. Here's "after Vincent Van Gogh, Self-Portrait, 1889," the one with the swirly turquoise background and Vincent's red hair and beard, only this "Vincent" is a marmalade tabby.

One of my favorites: "after Claude Monet The Promenade (Madame Monet and her Son) 1875" showing Mrs. Manet swirling around with her umbrella. Monet/Susan has captured the moment with swirling skirts and puffs of wind made by the twisting umbrella. Ah, the magic of the impression. Lovely Mrs. Cat Monet. Another favorite: "after Berthe Morisot the Cradle 1872" showing a reflective moment of a mother cat after putting down the kitty baby, who has her little paw against her little fur cheek. The sweetness!

And a last print: "after Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec In the Salon at the Rue des Moulins 1894" is a study of night cats waiting for toms, sitting in garish colors and velvets of the waiting area. The moment is everything. I do believe that will do.

5 comments about Feline AIDS: A Pet Owners Guide.

  1. Feline AIDS: A Pet Owners Guide
This is an informative book...gives owners of cats with Feline Aids hope and encouragement, through Thomas Hapka's own experience with Jac, that our beloved pets that have Feline Aids, with proper care, can enjoy a good quality of life for many years

  2. When I heard the words, "feral B "Mongo" positive" being shouted from one room to another while waiting in the vet's office, I felt my heart drop into my stomach. I listened to the doctor's words but did not hear him. First thing I did when I got home was to try to find out as much information about FIV as possible as quickly as possible. Immediately I ordered this book "Feline Aids: A Pet Owners Guide" and I cannot say enough good things about the book or Mr. Hapka. He actually took the time to speak personally with me, and offered nothing but encouragement and hope during a time when I was getting nothing but negative feedback about Mongo. The results I have had are amazing and I will be forever grateful for the wealth of information and support I received from the book and Mr. Hapka. On a scale of 1 - 10 I give it a 100!

  3. This is an excellent book! Tom is straightforward in regards to what an FIV+ cat is facing and tells the owner exactly what to do. He provides all sources and guidance for the use of his recommendations. Tom's plan works!

We have used Tom's plan and had amazing results with our cat. The attending veterinarian told us she would not make it; however, today she is perfectly healthy and living a normal life.

The nutrition chapters are applicable to ALL cat owners. We are using the raw foods and the high quality canned food daily. Along with the supplements. EVERY cat will achieve a much healthier state following Tom's advice. I feel guilty about the way I used to feed our cat.

Managing veterinarian care is another good section. Our vet was well meaning but he was taking a treatment approach that was having negative effects. Tom does not adocate forgoing vet care - he tells you what bad treatment is and what good treatment should entail.

This is the first review I have ever written and I am doing this one because my cat is with me today following this advice. We did hours of research looking for help and much of what is available is dated or only a partial approach. Tom has pulled everything together for a cat owner's benefit.

  4. This book is so important for those people who have cats with FIV. Kuro who has had FIV since adoption in 1999 was gravely ill this spring (2006) and we thought we were going to lose him. In my desperate attempt to seek other options after exhausting all medical treatments, this book gave me information and contacts I would not have otherwise had. I learned that being proactive with nutrition, vitamins and supplements are key in keeping a FIV+ cat in good health and that homeopathic medicine can help when traditional medicine fails. Tom has been of tremendous help to our Kuro.

  5. At a time when our veterenarian didn't have any answers we began seeking information ourselves and found Tom's book...what a blessing!
Our Grey Kitty had become very ill and refused to eat..Tom provided tons of valuble insight and information regarding every aspect of Feline Aids and alternative treatments. This book, along with Toms support and encouragement are priceless!
Tom's love & dedication to cats is amazing and so very appreciated!!! We thank you and our Grey Kitty thanks you-he looks better than ever!
    Thank you Tom!!!

5 comments about The Cat Fanciers' Association Complete Cat Book.

  1. Great book to show the overview of the cat world. Gives the history, talks about shows, points, and breeds of cats. If you are getting into showing cats this books is for you.

  2. My family consists of 4 members which includes our baby girl, a 3 and a half year old persian. I have been on a hunt for reading material that best describes the feline nature, behavior, needs and healthcare and I have finally found that in this book. After reading other cat care books I feel this one has a lot of fact not opinion. I would highly recommend this book whether you have a pedigree cat or not.

  3. a very informative book for the cat lover, with bright color pictures, discriptions of temperment , hair color of each cat. a very good book to have on hand.

  4. The book is excellent and a good source for reference regarding breeds. I also found the health information section quite informative, and would recommend it to anyone with any kind of cat.

  5. After a disasterous false start with the "Encyclopedia", which was simply an outdated, mediocre European book with the CFA logo sloppily applied to it, the Cat Fanciers' Association's ambitious project to present the world of pedigreed cats to the public is finally here. The sections on the different cat breeds are written by actual experts on the breeds: CFA breed council secretaries. The section on feline health, written by one of the world's foremost "cat breeder vets", Dr. Susan Little, makes this book an indispensible part of any cat lover's library. With so much dated feline health information currently on bookshelves, it is refreshing to see this section reflect the cutting edge of feline medicine. Those with cats of less prestigious heritage than the National Award Winning pedigreed cats pictured in full-color generously throughout the book will find this volume valuable for the section on feline health alone.

Congratulations, CFA, on a job well done!

5 comments about The Guide to Handraising Kittens.

  1. This is a wonderful reference book for both experienced pet rescuers or for the novice who happens to find a litter of orphaned kittens. The information is presented in a thorough and concise manner without overloading the reader with a lot of words. The pictures are clear and help illustrate the procedures being presented. This is an excellent addition to a cat lover's personal library.

  2. A neighborhood feral cat had 4 kittens outside our basement (recessed) window. Because of the commotion there, she moved 2 and abandoned 2. We brought in the abandoned ones when they were 3 days old. So far, they are 2.5 weeks, and growing strong. This book provided valuable, and concise, information to help us through.

You can find tons of information on the Internet about this subject. A lot of the medical information you will find has sites conflicting with each other. (Joy!) This book is easy to understand, has lots of images, and is ASPCA certified.

I strongly recommend it for anyone who is taking the place of a mother cat for newborns.

  3. This is a valuable reference book for anyone who rescues cats. It's very thorough and straightforward, with excellent photos throughout. I'm very pleased with it and will recommend that the rescue group I work with purchase a copy for all new kitten foster homes.

  4. This is a very helpful book! Everyone is bound to find a kitten or kittens with out a mom. This book will help you raise them into big healthy cats. I foster newborn orphans from and animal shelter, or just feral cats that are trapped and should sometimes be raised by a person so they will not be taught to be wild by their feral mom. You will learn how to bottle feed or tube feed, how to keep them warm, and much more. I highly recommend it!

  5. Anyone who takes care of stray cats inevitably finds a kitten or a whole litter of them with no mother. "Handraising Kittens" is a must-have for anyone who must see a newborn kitten through the first critical stages of its life. Easterly describes with compassion and in detail the steps necessary feed a kitten, build a nest to keep it warm, teach it to eliminate wastes, and clean it in ways that will not threaten the kitten's life. Easterly also provides sample charts for tracking a kitten's feeding, weight overall progress. If you must raise a kitten yourself, this book is invaluable.

1 comments about Atlas of Canine and Feline Cytology.

  1. My first impression about this book was really not so good: small, not so sharp photomicrograpy made me not so happy.
The reading of this book is, on the other hand, much more interesting: many new things, the most recent references, accurate descriptions.
I really hated the chapter about cavitary effusion while I loved the chapter about CNF and CNS cytology.
