5 comments about Complete Book of Cat Breeding, The.

  1. This book provides nearly all the necessary information to cat fanciers, gonna-be-breeders and breeders as well! Best valued for money!

  2. Very to the point, i have referenced this book many times. Must have for any breeder.

  3. This book was a disappointment. It was much smaller than I was expecting and the content was superficial. The content was mainly commonsense with very little additional useful information. Almost nothing on showing. It was an easy and pleasant read but not the right purchase for someone seriously interested in cat breeding. I felt I had wasted my money.

  4. This is a great book for people interested in properly breeding their cats.

As a breeder myself, I've found this book so handy for quick reference topics.

The book was shipped by Glen Books in great time and quality.

A must for the serious breeder.

  5. This is a concise, illustrated guide to cat breeding, written by an experienced DVM. I got this as a gift for someone interested, and she loved it. I may try cat breeding eventually, and I appreciate all worthy information, especially books, that I encounter.

5 comments about I Would Have Bought You A Cat , But... A Get Fuzzy Gift Book.

  1. My daughter collects all the Get Fuzzy books. When I saw this was a hard copy I was very excited. They fell to mention the book is like a 5 x 5 and a sentence or two on every other page. Of course my daughter will enjoy adding this bad kitty to her collection but I think the "hard copy" description was deceptive.

  2. This is a gift-book that is a compilation of single frames from previously published whole comic strips. The frames are usually the "punch lines" and are funny only if you have previously read the entire strip and understand the dysfunction that is Bucky Katt. There is no new material here. If the recipient of the gift is not familiar with the material, they will not think this is funny. If they are familiar with the material, they have seen all of this before.

  3. this is a great gift for any dreamer who says I want a cat!

  4. As all of his cartoons, I loved this book. It is very, very cute and would make a great gift for someone who likes cats. I bought it for myself.

  5. If you like Get Fuzzy you are going to love this book. I laugh everytime I read it.

4 comments about Cat Body, Cat Mind: Exploring Your Cat's Consciousness and Total Well-Being.

  1. This author has a weekly column in our newspaper. I look forward to reading it each week, and loved his book. He has a unique way of looking at cat behavior, and cat health issues. He's a well-qualified vet, who is willing to look beyond the typical approach to animal well-being. Great resource book for those who are truy interested in keeping their cats healthy and happy.

  2. I bought this book thinking it would clue me more into my cats and their behavior, etc. The author goes off on several tangents and ends up spending time talking about farm animal welfare and his own pet rabbit. Even when he is supposedly writing about cats and examples of their empathic abilities, people being visited by their cats after death, and cats knowing when their owners have died....most of the examples he gives are of dogs, birds and even mice! He also repeats himself a great deal in his off-topic sections and talks a great deal about his mentor and his the "correction" made to his Encyclopedia entry about dogs. I didnt agree with everything he had to say about cats, but I did like some of the information he gave about them when he actually discussed cats.

  3. I thought this book was supposed to be all about cats, but it wasnt..it was mostly about all animals. I also did not agree with some of the things the author recommended. I did not like this book at all.

  4. It's a terrific book by a person who has dedicated his life to understanding animal behaviors, and although this book mainly confirms the things that I already know about our furry companions, I am learning a few new things, too. I'd like to get Dog Body, Dog Mind: Exploring Canine Consciousness and Total Well-Being, as well, because I find the author's approach to writing both entertaining and, more importantly, informative. It is Fox's goal to help people have better relationships with their animal companions by learning a bit more about their behaviors and how to communicate with them. The writing can be characterized as a mixture of philosophic anecdotes and actual explanations of animal behaviors and conditions which I find to be not unlike one of my most beloved authors, James Herriot.

    I highly recommend this book!

  1. Great book! If you are serious about ultrasound than this is the book to buy!

  2. Nyland's Veterinary Diagnostic Ultrasound is an invaluable addition to my hospital library. I was initially introduced to this volume as a fourth-year Veterinary Student in Radiology/Ultrasound. After graduation, I made sure to purchase a personal copy for reference in private practice. It is filled with easy-to-understand illustrations of different imaging views of the heart and abdominal organs. I recommend keeping a copy of Nyland within easy reach of the clinic ultrasound for quick-reference during scans.

  3. It is easy to read and great to start studying ultrasound in cats, dogs and horses!

5 comments about The Ultimate Pet Food Guide: Everything You Need to Know about Feeding Your Dog or Cat.

  1. An eye opener. I've already cured my German Shepherd's allergies by feeding her a grain free diet. Author is also a great dog obedience instructor.

  2. This book is a great place to start if you are considering feeding your dog homemade food. It has many recipes and suggestions so you don't have to search several different books.

  3. I have tried some of the meals and gotten a lot of great ideas . My girls were already eating cooked chicken, this gives them some variety.

  4. I found the information in Ms. Palika's book has helped me a lot in looking at the labels of my cat's and my dog's foods. I appreciate the recipes for home made diets, both raw and cooked, but I don't cook that much for myself. But at least after reading this book I understand what to look for when buying a commercial food--and I even found a safe, easy to feed raw food brand for my pets. Thanks!

  5. This book presents an easily understandable, yet comprehensive review of the options available to feed your pet. The book covers the complete range of pet foods, from kibble you can get at almost any store, through specialized dehydrated natural pet foods, and finally to raw or cooked foods you can prepare at home (too much effort for me!) Being a dedicated dog owner, I focused on that part of the book, although there is also lots of information on cat foods.

Although the book provides a few examples of good and bad pet foods, its real value is that it taught me how to become an educated pet owner, so that I can provide my dogs with healthy meals that meet their nutritional needs. Understanding the nutritional needs of dogs is not obvious to the typical consumer - for example, it turns out that there is "good" kibble and "bad" kibble. Good kibble tries to mimic what dogs and wolves evolved to eat in the wild, while bad kibble mostly consists of grains and whatever meat byproducts that pet food conglomerates can put together at a cheap price. (You don't often see wolves, which are closely related to dogs, out cooking up a batch of rice or wheat for dinner....) I found this book to be a tremendous source of information on this subject. As another example, ground corn (the first ingredient in some dog foods) includes the entire ear of corn - not just the corn kernels, but also the corn cob, all ground up together. Yuck - but it's a lot cheaper than meat! Care to guess how much of that ingredient nourishes your best friend and how much passes straight through, for you to clean up later?

In summary, this book really makes you think about what you are feeding your pet, and gives you the information to make better decisions. As Ms. Palika writes, the old adage that states "we are what we eat" also applies to our pets. Taking the time to understand that can pay benefits in healthier pets that are likely to live happier, longer lives. Highly recommended.

5 comments about The Christmas Cat.

  1. Just for those who are looking for a copy of this--it's going to be rereleased as part of Love Came Just in Time very soon . . . and it's not an out-of-print book. I get emails often asking for this book and according to my publisher it's still in print. Don't overpay for something you can still get for a traditional price!

  2. Julie Beard - My True Love Gave to Me Anne Clancy looks to be celebrating Christmas alone - not even her black cat Niner is around having been missing these last four days. Hearing what she thinks is his bell, she rushes out in a snowstorm calling for him and is hit by a car. When a most startling blue-eyed gorgeous hunk of man revives her, she assumes it is her neighbors friend who she was to meet that evening - darn but she could have warned her he was drop dead gorgeous! Only it wasn't the neighbor's friend - and it wasn't even Wisconsin, USA 1975 anymore either. She was catapulted back in time and mistaken for this gorgeous hunk of a medieval knight's intended bride. Now what's a modern girl to do? Divine short story with a lovely ending.

Jo Beverley - A Gift of Light Kitty Mayhew was alone working on a tapestry trying to figure out what was wrong with her mother's cat who was making the strangest sounds and putting her body through some very strange contortions. It was her maid Polly that let her know that the problem was that the cat was in heat and hadn't she heard the `tom cats' making all kinds of racket at night. The very worst of the `tom cats' was a big black one that she found out belonged to a neighbor. Armed with all the dignity she could muster Kitty went to the neighbor insisting they control their `tom' cat from courting her female. What she discovered was a very impudent owner who didn't seem to see that this was as much of a problem as she did. In fact, this rascally `Lord Chatterton' thought that this little spitfire needed to be taught the finer points of courting - human style. Through a ruse using the servants courtship as an excuse, he talked Kitty into the two of them acting as chaperones to find out if the servants budding courtship would last if it didn't have to be kept clandestine and would be brought into the open.

This was a cute, lovely story with some sweet and sassy dialog. Lord Chatterton was the initiator of trying to teach a lesson in courtship, but it was Kitty who finally taught Tom, Lord Chatterton, what it really meant to let in the `light of the Christmas season' and truly love.

Barbara Bretton - Home for the Holidays This was a darling story told partly from Sebastian, a Maine Coon cat's perspective and partly from his human owners, Jill and David. It is Christmas Eve and David and Jill are divorcing. Jill and David had been together since college; loving each other thru the hard times then slowly falling apart as David's need to advance his career and make more and more money was more important than spending time with his family. It would take Sebastian, the cat they both loved, on a journey that they could follow - to make David remember that the most important thing he needed was Jill and that they were partners - and that they were once happiest when all they had was a little money but whole lot of love. Sweet story.

Lynn Kurland - The Gift of Christmas Past I really liked this offering from Lynn Kurland. Sir Sweetums, Abigail Garrett's cat, has been missing, and her life feels as though it has gone down the drain, no job, no cat, no unemployment insurance, and no boyfriend just a couple of days before Christmas - she felt like George Bailey and was ready to jump off a bridge into the river. Well, she didn't exactly jump but she did fall in and when she came up for air she found herself in a cesspool of a moat. Not only a moat, but she was no longer in Wisconsin, but England and it wasn't 1998 anymore but 1238! She dragged herself out of the moat, and made her way to the gate at the top of the drawbridge - only to find a surly man dressed up like a medieval knight holding a sword and he didn't quite know what to make of her either! This was a really darling story with Sir Sweetums, who had passed by his ninth life, and was now a guardian angel cat who had one last human he had to find a suitable mate for. Very nice and romantic as these two people from different times had to come to grips with each other and the truth of who they were! Very humorous as well!

  3. I bought this book for the Lynn Kurland story. It is wonderful. Miles and Abby are made for each other. I loved it for the time-travel aspect. Lynn knows how to capture the essence of the times she sends her hero's and heroin's back to.

If you want to carry on reading about Miles and Abby's life together read THE MORE I SEE YOU, it is set about 20yrs. after this story. You won't be dissapointed.

  4. I originally bought this book to read Lynn Kurland's story, but after I read her story I decided to keep going and read the others. I found ALL the stories to be good reads, especially Jo Beverly's "A Gift of Light". This has given me the opportunity to find other authors that are readable.

  5. The Christmas Cat is a delightful and light hearted book. I enjoyed reading the book by one of my favorite authors and it enables me to determine if I would like to read other books by the other authors included in these books. It also provides you with several different story lines so that you can finish the book in one day instead of not knowing the end of the book until later.

4 comments about Natural Nutrition for Cats: The Path to Purr-fect Health.

  1. This little gem really spells out how to feed your cat. I have known for years that a raw diet is the best way to feed them, but I could never get my two boys to eat anything raw. This book has helped me feed them right. I am almost there. In another few days they will be eating a completely raw diet. I no longer give them dried food. I know they like it but it is so bad for them, even the high quality, low carb variety that I have because it has been cooked. My cats have already lost weight and their coats are shinier and healthier. Knowing what I know about the human diet (that we eat too many carbs and not enough fat) I am certain that having my cats eat an ancestral diet is the way to keep them healthy and disease free. I highly recommend this book if you want your cats to live a long and healthy life.

  2. I found the subject intriguing and have a lot of respect for holistic approaches. The discussion of the dark side of the pet food industry was troubling and made me really rethink what I am feeding to my cat. I also respect the author's emphasis in obtaining nutrients from food (the synergistic blend of nutrients in food can't be duplicated in a lab) rather than pills and supplements. Her approach to nutrition can and should very easily transfer to how we (humans) should eat for optimal health.

Unfortunately, there is some seriously sloppy science and argumentation that occurs in the book. For one, the author states that grains should not be part of a cat's diet. Grains are cheap and make up a large part of commercial cat food. Cats are evolutionarily equipped to eat raw meat so that's what we should feed our cats. She insists that this is safe because cats survived millions of years eating raw meat without bacterial problems. The problem in this country is that our farm animals are eating things that they were not evolutionarily equipped to eat. Cows being fed grain has resulted in the evolution of acid-resistant E. coli strains. The acid-resistant E. coli strains have been an issue for human health too. Our farm chickens are also raised in very unsanitary conditions resulting in higher levels of Salmonella, making me very wary of feeding raw chicken to my cat. The author did warn against feeding our cats raw pork because it might not be safe - I'm not sure why she thinks pork is unsafe while beef and chicken are. As far as I know, the main reason why people cooked pork to well done was to kill the parasitic roundworm Trichinella spiralis. Nowadays, the risk of contracting trichinosis from eating undercooked pork is very rare. But T. spiralis is still found in wild animals. So yes, it is natural for cats to hunt and eat wild animals like rabbits. But it is also natural for cats to contract parasites from these natural diets. While the author stresses that we should try to feed our cats organic meats if budgets allow. I agree with this. But feeding our cats raw conventional meat has its potential risks. The author clearly has her own agenda and makes no mention of these potential risks. She dismisses any real discussion about these risks by giving anecdotes of all the healthy pets she and her vet have met who eat raw food diets. These anecdotes are helpful but they are not scientific.

While criticizing how the pet food industry derives its nutrient formulations from studies done on animals that are not cats, the author will make a case for why artificial dyes, benzoic acid, BHA,BHT, MSG, and citric acid are bad for cats while referencing studies that most likely were not done on cats (I'm not entirely sure because the author never footnotes any of the scientific claims she makes). I understand that it is not scientifically sound to make conclusions about cat nutrition if all the studies done were done on horses because they are two different animals, but as someone who is relatively familiar with the scientific process, many of the breakthroughs found in human nutrition were from studies done on animals that were not human. Other breakthroughs were from accidents - yes it's sad that many kitties died because the pet food industry did not realize that taurine was an essential amino acid. It's happened in the human world too. Sometimes the only way to figure out FOR SURE that something is essential for a particular animal is to do testing on that animal. But I'm sure if scientists were starving some cats of an essential nutrient to prove that it is essential, the author and others would throw a fit.

All in all, the book does a good job in starting a cultural dialogue on the issue. That's it. Hopefully it can result in more scientific inquiry on what is best for our cats. Until then, I will be on the lookout for better resources.

  3. Lots of great (scary!) info on the unregulated pet food industry in this country. If you are on the border about switching your cat to a raw food diet, this book will give you the motivation to never feed with commercial pet food again! Lots of detail on how to make your own food and what supplements to add (and why). After conventional vets could do no more for my kitty (and I think were making him worse!) I started taking him to a small-animal osteopath/homeopath. She has been using raw diets on her animals for 12 years and said she found that the animals actually do better on just whole ground up animals (including some liver, heart, gizzard and the ground bones). She did not recommend feeding extra supplements.. If all the supplement preparation in the book looks too overwhelming for you, just try the ground up animal since it is still WAY better than the commercial poisons. Just remember that you must include some taurine (heart and gizzards) and a small amount of liver and some bone for them to get a balanced diet. I think the supplement controversy comes in because cats eating whole animals would eat the stomach and everything and most likely get some vegetable matter from what their prey (mostly mice) would eat. Find a good butcher who will grind whole chickens, cornish hens or quail, rabbits, and turkey meat with added organ meats. They will most likely want to do it at the close of business just before they clean their machines since they would contaminate other meats ground afterwards.. Get the meat coarse-ground and add some small cut-up pieces if you have the time so your kitty has something to chew on.. Also, try to get meats without hormones or antibiotics since cats little bodies really aren't equipped to handle all that either.. although, raw with hormones and antibiotics is still better than commercial as well.. Have patience, if your kitty is addicted to his crunchies, you may have to put a few in the raw food to get him to start eating.. My sister and I both did the "sink or swim" philosophy with our cats (here's the food, eat it) and they both took to it pretty quickly.. and are eating with gusto now! One great benefit is that their poo gets tiny and all dried up with no smell! My kitty had HUGE stinky poo before the raw diet: guess the commercial food had so little nutrient value that it all came out in the litter box! ..Oh, and my kitty is now putting weight back on and his fur is getting thicker every day!

  4. This book contains information that every pet owner should know about! I have a good friend whos cat was killed by eating a well known brand of cat food that was included in the pet food recall last year. This book gives you all the information you need to protect yourself and your cat from such a tragic fate. The book is a worthy follow up to Kymythy Schultze's other two books that I recommend to everyone. The No-Cook book for People and Pets is my favorite receipe book of all time, and the Natural Nutrion for Dogs and Cats book was what started me feeding a homemade diet years ago. She has done a brilliant job of updating the information in the first book and adding new and very timely information for cats and their people. As usual Ms. Schultze adds her brand of humor and charm to the subject, making it a very enjoyable read. I really enjoyed the cat pictures too. Great book!

5 comments about The Search for Joyful: A Mrs. Mike Novel.

  1. I thought the authors did a wonderful job of moving forward in a difficult story line and family line. A time table that I think catches so many Mrs. Mike followers off guard. The intention was not to do another Mrs. Mike or Mrs. Mike 2 episode. As they explained they did that already eons ago. For them it was to tell the next generations story and they did that with history intact. I thought wonderful and well written and I'm sad that so many people felt let down. I for one think the writing was good. While my husband would never read the type of story Mrs. Mike was he might read and enjoy the historic times brought out in this The Search for Joyful. I was a young teen when I read Mrs. Mike and not an assignment just a library check out. I fell in love with it didn't re-read it until my 50's. A lot of the romance and pain was no longer the same for me that it was as the teen. Yet I enjoyed the book and wanted to read it again before reading this next story. Hat's off to some wonderful writers who have given us two and possibly three great novels. For my next read is going to be their Kathy.....and so to you dear people thank you for finally getting round to the continuation of story. Thank you thank you thank you. At your ages many blessings to you for doing so makes it even more precious if not a bit precocious. An expression of behavior usually spent on the youth....and in your case young at heart. Such a delight you Freedman's have been!

  2. Though many of Amazon's reviewers did not give this sequel favorable reviews, I think this book is far superior to the preceeding story. The two books have a very different flavor. The first book is like a romantic novel, while the second comes closer to being a respectable literary fare. The writing and plot of the second book offer at least as much depth and iterest as the first.
I think that if those who loved the first book are disappointed by its sequel, it has more to do with the fact that Mary Katherine and Mike Flannagan are minor characters in the second book. Be Joyful's daughter has at least as much moxie and depth as the her adoptive mother Mrs. Mike. Like her mother, she discovers who she is through much adversity, and is forced to answer many of life's enduring questions along the way. I think that Be Joyful's daughter is a more timeless and interesting person than her mother. I sincerely believe that the sequel is the superior of the two works. It is a more sophisticated story and perhaps therefore less accessible.

  3. I read Mrs. Mike when I was 7 years old and remember asking my Mother for help with some of the words. Since my 4 daughters and 5 granddaughters are also readers of everything they can get their hands on, I told them about my first book and decided to find a copy (which I did thru Amazon and the Book Service). "The Search for Joyful" arrived before my new/old copy of Mrs. Mike and I read it first. I was amazed that I remembered the history of the characters so vividly.

The story continues for Mrs. Mike thru her children in the sequel. The author writes an easy to follow, light hearted but real story of this family. I am hoping "my girls" will treasure my new purchases as much I have - by memory - for such a long time. I am 67 years old. Thank you Amazon for finding the books for me. Sincerely, Carolyn E Ashbrook

  4. Was this really written by the same authors of Mrs. Mike? I find it poorly put together and very hard to believe. I never "like" the character I am reading about. I don't understand her. I plodded through the book anyway, hoping that somewhere it would turn up good. But, unfortunately, that never happened. I have not read the third book in this saga yet, and am hesitant to do so. I may just stick with reading Mrs. Mike over and over.

  5. If you are expecting a story as good as Mrs. Mike, you won't find it here. You would never know that the same authors penned this book. Mrs. Mike is one of my all-time favorite books and I would never part with my copy. The sequel is terrible--bad story, Mrs. Mike (referred to in this book as "Mama Kathy") has a very minor part in it, and I wondered why the main character was called "Kathy" when in Mrs. Mike, her adoptive parents decided to call her "Kate" because it would be too confusing to have two Kathys in the house. From what I can tell about the sequel to this book, the next one is even worse and I don't plan to waste my money.

5 comments about The Cat Who'll Live Forever: The Final Adventures of Norton, the Perfect Cat, and His Imperfect Human.

  1. This is the last chapter, but very loving tribute to the cat we have all gotten to know so well. NORTON It describes the friends he has met in his travels how much HIS story here can help us all when it's our time to grieve. He says his goodbyes, but it also tells us about new things that happen to him. It's wonderful to listen to.

  2. I love Scottish Fold Cats and of course had to read the adventures of Norton, a very intelligent cat! I anxiously awaited the final book about Norton's last days. Very touching but of course sad. Mr. Gethers is quite a nice author as I wrote to him and got a personal reply back. (As my Scottish Fold looks like Norton, I even sent Mr. Gethers a photo my my cat.)

  3. The book itself is in excellent physical edition; only the end pages with library info have been removed.
I was overcome by the depth and intensity of the love shown for Norton by his friend Peter. Heartbreaking--but also heartwarming to read of such a strong bond between man and cat. Not sure if I could be so attentive to my adopted 14-year old cat if she were to encounter severe medical problems. Hats off and hugs to you, Peter.

  4. A Hallmark card disguised as a book. If you like your cliches syrupy, I guess you might like this drivel.

  5. I was given the first two Norton books as a gift. A Cat in Paris, and A Cat Abroad. What I discovered is the magic of Peter Gethers. My friends, these are more than just "cat books". Peter Gethers is an a gifted writer who writes about his interesting life, and the adventures Norton has with him. This book is the final Chapter of Norton stories. It's a heart-wrenching story of the final adventures of the friends we've known to love, whether abroad or home. Our rough around the edges Peter has no boundaries when it comes to sweet Norton. One thing that has always stuck with me is Gethers, a grown man, who would move over in bed so as not to disturb Norton sleeping on his pillow. It's painful to read, especially if you've read the others. But, Gethers brings us to Norton's end in peace. It's a great book for an animal lover, but Gether's adventures make this book a fit for anyone.

5 comments about The Fur Person, Gift Edition.

  1. Author May Sarton has given me some of my most reflective reading experiences with her journals but I've been much less organized about reading her poetry and novels. When I spotted her 1957 short novel The Fur Person it was an easy choice to grab it. Sarton spent her last twenty years in Maine, so I have a special interest in her work.

The story, told from the cat's point of view, is of a stray cat, a Cat-about-town. His life on the streets is guided by the Ten Commandments of the Gentleman Cat, such as "Never allow constraint of your person under any circumstances." One day the hunger and homelessness begin to pall, and our cat goes about "finding a permanent home and staff." His search brings him to the home of Sarton and her partner, who are known to the cat as Gentle Voice and Brusque Voice. Once installed in their home in Cambridge, MA, he dines on creamed haddock, keeps the neighborhood cats in line, and has the occasional catnip bender. They name him Tom Jones because he was a foundling, and perform their servant duties admirably. This little parable ends with our cat musing on what it means to be a Fur Person: a status that can only occur "if the human being has imagined part of himself into a cat."

The Fur Person is a short but essential read for cat lovers. The 1978 edition has a preface by May Sarton containing a rare treat: she tells the story of going away for a sabbatical year and leaving house and cat in the care of Vladimir and Vera Nabokov. The great writer used Sarton's study, where he installed a semi-reclining stuffed armchair for his writing -- with Tom Jones draped across his chest.

This is a charming little book that says as much about the people as the cat, and even more about the comfort of home and family. Every lover of cats or of the English language will enjoy it.

  2. May Sarton, poet and journal-writer extraorindaire, wrote a novella/poem to the Cat, the Gentleman Cat, called "The Fur Person". I have reread this masterpiece every year for the past 25 years. "The Fur Person" is for children and adults, for everyone!

  3. May Sarton is an insightful writer in all of her books. Although I am not a cat lover, I read the book first before deciding whether or not my cat-lover reader friends would enjoy this book. I know they will. The hardcover edition is especially nice for a gift. The illustrations in the book are a treasure as well.

  4. This book was given to me as a gift and after reading it I promptly bought 4 from Amazon to give as gifts for the holidays. The author has truly captured her cat's essence. It's beautifuly written and tells just how much love a cat needs and gives. I highly recommend this book.

  5. This is a good book both children and adults. Couldn't wait to read the next chapter.
