5 comments about Textbook of Veterinary Internal Medicine: Diseases of the Dog and Cat (2-Volume Set).
- I have received it exactly on time, as it was planned! Congratulations to amazon.com. I'm really looking foward reading through it. I'll give you some new feedback as soon as I get more familiar with it!
-
Book was for my daughter. She says for those that need it it is invaluable!
- I got this heavy 2 volume set within 2 days of ordering. Great seller!
- This is the perfect book for vets and veterinary students. They are very actualized and give explanations about the diseases and diagnosis in detail.
- If you can only have one Internal Medicine book in your library this is it. Very little not found in this book...Authors have made a great effort to be complete and it is well edited. All other Internal Medicine books are superficial, but if you want to know the theory, current treatment/diagnosis, and current research possibilities buy this...it is great!

1 comments about The Cat Lover's Survival Guide.
- The best part of The Cat Lover's Survival Guide by veteran author Karen Commings is that you can find help quickly. From treating kitty zits to giving your cat a pill, you'll find a wealth of practical, pertinent solutions for solving "pesky pet problems." Commings includes creative tips for cats with disabilities, and she takes a unique look at the other side of the coin by providing resources for cat owners with physical limitations. If you love cats, this book--full of reasonable solutions to make life easier for both species--should not be missed.

5 comments about Chloe Anne: Force of Nature.
- Reviewed by Mary Durfor for RebeccasReads (8/08)
This story is told in first-person (make that first-cat!) and it is really a fun, light read. Chloe Anne (the cat) tells her story in a compelling way, first detailing her rather pedestrian existence in her first home, where her moniker was Penny. She had to be left behind when her people moved. Penny overheard the preparatory conversations - The Humane Society? She felt it sounded like a place where other cats with breeding and style might congregate, possibly to do good works.
The reality hits Penny as she joins the other prisoners in the lock-up. She remembers the made-for-TV women in prison movies she had seen in the past, and hopes she will be adopted quickly. The guards, Penny found, were kind and gentle and full of compliments to the prisoners. She played coy with the visitors, until she met Valerie, her new mom. Valerie immediately renames her Chloe Anne and brings her home to her wonderful Jewish home to be a friend to Cinders, the cat Valerie inherited when her mother passed away. Chloe Anne is ecstatic to now be a part of the Chosen People. The author works in the celebration of The Seder - the food preparation, the recounting of the exact dishes, which are cooked and served, the actual proper way of observing the ceremony, which is integrated into the dinner. Additionally she cleverly refers to many television and movie stars and shows.
Chloe Anne recounts her first solo experience outside the house - with a duck, which lives on the lagoon outside their home. Since Chloe Anne is declawed, the experience is both inherently dangerous and forbidden. She also recounts a dream sequence (part of her detailed discourses on sleeping) where she is a contestant in Dancing with the Stars, her partner, Antonio Banderas, and she expertly execute the steps of the rumba and then samba off the stage. The author has the inside Hollywood scoop and gossip, which she weaves into the story. She easily contrasts the personalities of the three judges and the process used in the actual television show.
Several more interesting occurrences round out the book, and the finale gives more insight into the type of cat personality Chloe Anne possesses, as well as that of Cinders and Valerie. Any animal lover will appreciate the wit and humor of this cat tale, especially cat lovers, of course. Lighthearted and funny, it is a treat to read and enjoy.
- Chloe Anne - Force of Nature is the endearing true-life story of the self-assured, well-fed, and thoroughly beloved pet cat Chloe Anne, told directly from Chloe's point of view. She has no qualms about expressing her feline feelings to author and de facto cat mother Valerie Oblath. The result is an engaging chronicle of Chloe Anne's adventures, including imprisonment in the Big House, her inquisitive exploration of the washing machine, her encounters with ducks, and much more. An episodic delight to read in quick bursts, or all at once (perhaps while one's own purring pet demands obligatory lap time), Chloe Anne - Force of Nature is highly recommended for cat lovers everywhere.
- If you've ever wondered what might be going on in your cat's mind, this is a wonderful story to read. Chloe Anne is a beautiful, savvy, sophisticated (and somewhat voluptuous) cat who tells the story of her adoption and life with her new mom from her own point of view. She touches upon all of the most important feline subjects: eating, sleeping, grooming, and of course curiosity.
This is a truly touching story, and especially a must-read for cat-lovers!
- Meet Chloe Anne - a voluptuous, long-haired kitty. Full of curiosity and charm, she knows she's "too beautiful for words."
Chloe Anne begins life as Penny, before being incarcerated at the Big House, and before author Valerie Oblath adopts her. Living with her new Mom and sister, Chloe Anne never runs out of ways to amuse herself and find trouble. But despite her mischief, she's secure in the knowledge that her Mom loves her, and she'll never have to worry about ending up in the Big House again.
This humorous tale of Chloe Anne's adventures is a joy to read. Even though it's impossible to tell what a cat is really thinking, Valerie Oblath has created a convincing chat with this delightful feline. But even more than that, she shares her own warmth and devotion to the cats who share her home.
Anyone who's ever lived with and been loved by a cat will enjoy reading this book.

Bergers Book Reviews
- Sent to the Humane Society when her owners had to move, Penny the cat is soon adopted and her new mom renames her Chloe Anne. Chloe loves her new mom and home, but can't help being a bit adventurous. Many of her adventures are harmless - befriending a duck for example; some are messy (it's not a good idea to explore fireplaces); but some are scary (Chloe decides to investigate how a washing machine works). Chloe doesn't mean to upset her mom, but she is a cat after all. Is it her fault that her brother and sister aren't as adventurous as she is?
Told in the first person by Chloe Anne, "Chloe Anne: Force of Nature" is a delightful, very funny book. Chloe Anne belongs to author Valerie Oblah, who clearly loves and understands cats. If cats could really write and think (besides about food and sleep) they would no doubt think like Chloe Anne. Chloe Anne never means to get into mischief, it's just that there's so much to explore and the world is a pretty big place. The humor throughout the book is at times laugh out loud funny (I especially liked the parts when Chloe goes out to explore something, falls asleep in the middle of exploring, then wakes up and goes on as if uninterrupted). Anyone who has ever been owned by a cat will have experienced their cat doing at least one of the things Chloe Anne does and will now know what their cat was thinking while doing it!
Cat lovers will enjoy "Chloe Anne: Force of Nature".

1 comments about Garfield Book of Cat Names.
- While Jim Davis is rarely associated with the modern day literary greats, this book reverses the assumption that the cartoon, "Garfield," is little more than an analogy for suicide. Alas, more than one of us has feared for Jon's life, as a combination of his general bad luck and Garfield's general maliciousness threaten to push poor Mr. Arbuckle over the edge. This book is a playful retreat from Davis's darker themes, in which Garfield becomes the mischevious provider of feline names, as opposed to his usual activities that send Jon to bed crying. This work propells Davis to the head of the proverbial class. Watch out "Family Circus!" Garfield is back in town!

3 comments about Tatianna: Tales and Teachings of My Feline Friend.
- I read this book shortly after the loss of my feline friend of 15-1/2 years. Linda's story of the intimate bond she shared with Tatianna mirrored the bond I had with my own feline friend. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves cats...it's also especially healing to read after the loss of a feline friend. A true blessing.
- Not too often does a book centered around one specific animal have such a positive impact on the reader as does this book. Nor do many memoirs radiate the intense compassion for not just that one creature, but for all life. The author clearly carries her respect and love for her cat, Tatianna, into all she does, all she believes in. As a writer, speaker, and educator, this could not be more important. Tatianna carries us on a profound journey - one that contains all the best ingredients for learning, laughing, grieving, and growing through everything that makes us better people. In this delightful book we not only befriend Linda and her beloved Tatianna, but bring from the experience an enhanced understanding of love and respect for others. And that is just one aspect of this particular volume that makes it so special. The excellent writing takes the reader through all the emotions associated with animal care-giving, yes even the 'Saying Good-bye' part...but be assured there is much that will make you smile and laugh aloud as well. Those who know cats well will feel as if they have met a kindred spirit in Linda Mohnr. This is a grand book - well written, beautifully designed. It is comfortable to hold in the hands and the print and page size is kind to the eyes. It is a book that should be in every animal appreciator's library. Even the die-hard dog lover will find great joy in reading Tatianna.

Pet lovers will love this poignantly told story of Tatianna as written by Linda A. Mohr. It is the story of a sixteen-year journey, of bonding, and of the healing experienced by Linda from Tatianna in a time of grief. Later Linda became Tatianna's caregiver and lifeline during her extended illness.
After the loss of her fiancé, Ken, in a motorcycle accident, Linda explained Tatianna's help this way. "Although I had lost a physical life with Ken the devoted love, tenderness, and companionship of Tatinanna sustained me."
Linda's doting descriptions of Tatianna included phrases like: "She provided companionship in solitude, was mischievous, rambunctious, and curious. She was friendly, but aggressive, social, adventurous, and she loved unconditionally. She was devoted, protective, and amusing."
I found the quotations at the beginning of each chapter as well as Linda's original poems, affirmations, and positive reinforcements to be both inspirational and thought-provoking. Linda's personal and firm conviction of God s working through these experiences on a daily basis came through in her writing.
In her Christmas letter in 2000 Linda wrote, "On the furry front, Tatinanna is now over fifteen-years-old, and she has been miraculously battling kidney disease for the past two and one-half years. We continue her daily therapy and affirmations. You would never know she was ill by looking at her."
Linda's detailed accounts of the treatments, therapy, prescriptions, affirmations, and acupuncture are of tremendous value to any pet owner going through similar disease processes with their pets. Tatianna's Circle of Life Gallery highlights the pages of the book and adds a unique appeal to her story. I found myself enjoying the pictures many times, as well as frequently referring to the very unique presentation of an illustrated timeline provided as a part of the preface to the book.
Linda s descriptions of her elaborate Christmas trees with their unique ornaments, and her astounding collection of antiques will add interior decorators, and antique dealers, to her list of eager readers, which include pet owners, pet store operators, and veterinarians.
The chronicles of Tatianna, her feline friends, and her biographer Linda A. Mohr is a heartwarming story of an amazing, loving, spiritual bonding relationship of a pet and her owner. Linda A. Mohr is a gifted writer. "Tatianna: Tales and Teachings of My Feline Friend" is one of endurance, bravery, strength, faith, and love. Simply beautiful.

3 comments about The Feline Patient: Essentials of Diagnosis and Treatment.
- If you're serious enough about feline health issues to have clicked on the title of this book, BUY IT. NOW. (Then find out if your vet already has a copy, and if s/he doesn't, invest in another copy for your vet. Seriously.)
If it's absolutely impossible for you to afford the second (2002) edition, pick up a copy of the first (1998, I think) edition. Although it's always important with medical stuff to get current info, even the first edition will leave you FAR more knowledgeable and up-to-date about feline health issues than the vast majority of vets (who are often too busy to keep up with current info and typically more focused on dogs, as well). (No book -- including this one -- can begin to take the place of a good vet; but this book will equip you to tell the difference between a good cat vet who knows his/her stuff, and a mediocre vet with a good bedside manner.)
The Pill Book Guide to Medications for Your Dog and Cat is another very good book for the serious cat lover. (Though it's *desperately* overdue for a new edition. Desperately. But still very useful.)
But, back to the point at hand: BUY THE FELINE PATIENT. Your cat(s) need you to.
-- Michelle (Siamese Rescue Northwest)
- This book provides excellent insight into feline symptoms. While it uses medical terminology, it's the same terminology you'll see on the your pet's veterinarian visit records, tests, and even in other feline health books. It describes cat symptoms and indicates possible causes. It recommends courses of investigation and explains what to do based upon the results. It also weighs different diagnostic approaches, e.g., x-rays vs. ultrasound.
This information is useful for laypersons who wish to be an even better healthcare advocate for their pet. For example, it explains when and why it's important to pay attention to sneezing: when it occurs in cats aged six or less it is likely due to a viral or bacterial infection, while in cats over 10 years it is likely due to neoplasia (cancer).
I'd like to be a better pet guardian in future, which is why I bought this book. Unfortunately, my vet thought my chronically sneezing 13-year-old cat had simply developed allergies - even after I took her in twice as I was concerned. He was wrong. If I'd had this book to consult, I'd have known to press for additional testing.
All in all, this book is excellent to have on the bookshelves - so that it's there when needed. Cats do not present with the same symptoms as dogs. They often conceal that they are in pain. Once you've been through a cat with illness, I think it will help you to recognize it in other cats.
One other tip that I didn't find in this book - if your cat's vocalization habits change - pay attention. According to material I've seen published by the SPCA, and personal experience, this is a likely indication that the cat is in pain. The SPCA document also indicated that medical attention is likely required most urgently by the time a cat vocalizes about it. In fact, by the time they vocalize, it's likely the disease is significantly advanced. Better to be alert for other symptoms and signs.
Another resource that I'd recommend that is directed to the layperson is "The Cornell Books of Cats: The Comprehensive and Authoritative Medical Reference for Every Cat and Kitten" by Mordecai Siegal. It offers excellent information on how to recognize when an animal is in pain. The signs are subtle, e.g., cats will often simply restrict movement in answer to pain. My criticism of this book is that it glosses over scary subjects such as cancer, and as I see it, encourages readers to think all is well and further investigation isn't necessary.
- I can't recommend "The Feline Patient" highly enough. The information in this book has saved the lives of two of my cats. Soon after I bought this book, my 15-year-old Maine Coon cat became very ill, was diagnosed with diabetes, yet the ever-increasing doses of insulin that were prescribed didn't seem to improve his condition. The more insulin he was given, the higher his glucose level became. Concerned, I began to research the problem on my own, using this book, and hypothesized that my cat had not only diabetes, but also chronic pancreatitis, and that he was not only unable to produce sufficient insulin, but was also unable to effectively use the insulin he was given. Based upon the information in this book, I requested that several other diagnostic tests be performed. These tests confirmed my hypotheses, my cat's treatment has been revised, and I now look forward to more happy months and years with him.
While grooming my ten-year-old Cymric, I felt some very small, hard bumps in her back. These were approximately the size of an ordinary matchhead. Although they were very, very small, they were painful, and she cried when I touched them, even lightly. From having read this book, I knew that any unexplained bump or lump beneath the surface of a cat's skin should be evaluated by a veterinarian immediately. My cat has required two surgeries, but thanks to early detection and treatment, her prognosis is far better than it would otherwise have been. "The Feline Patient" was written for veterinary practitioners, so the lay person will find the vocabulary challenging, and will probably require a good veterinary dictionary as a companion to this book. Nevertheless, the person who loves and cares for feline family members will find that the benefits greatly outweigh that challenge. Thank you, Amazon.com, for making this book available to the general public!
