5 comments about From Worn to Wonderful: A Step-By-Step Guide to Fashion Doll Restoration.

  1. THIS BOOK IS VERY BASIC. IT DOES NOT GO INTO ANY OF THE INTERMEDIATE OR ADVANCED TECHNIQUES. THERE IS NOT A LOT OF INDEPTH DETAIL. FOR THE BEGINNER, THIS IS A GREAT BOOK.

  2. I found this book to be a total waste of time. A good portion of it is pictures of her dolls, which are not by any means noteworthy examples. The instructions she gives are so rudimentary as to be worthless. There are no good "how-to" photos accompanying the text. But what disturbs me the most is that the instructions she gives for removing green ear can severely damage the face paint on vintage Barbies. All in all, a total waste of time and money.

  3. This is a very helpful little guide for getting started with restoring your old childhood favorites. Since my old dolls and toys have been stuffed into cardboard boxes for almost 20 years, this informative book showed me where to begin. It's easy to follow with both practical and creative ideas. A wonderful hobby for those who are children at heart!

  4. This book was excellent for fixing up old dolls found in attics
and at flea markerts. It was not too complicated for basic beginners but the easy to follow steps really made a difference
in the dolls appearance and value. It is not meant to take the
place of a professional doll restoration which takes years of
practice and special materials. It is for using products in every
home that everyone has. GREAT READ FOR EVERYONE !!!!!

  5. I have found "From Worn to Wonderful" an excellent source of restoration information. I had no clue on what to do before I read this book. This book provided helpful hints for the beginner.

1 comments about The Complete Guide to Repairing and Restoring Furniture (Complete Guide to).

  1. I was hoping to use this book to repair and refinish some basic bedroom furniture we inherited (East Lake), but this book, from England, is not for the beginner. The title is misleading and has no real use for someone who is just looking for a guide to repairing and restoring furniture that one typically has. This book was designed for an advanced user in really antique furniture. I was very disappointed that I bought this book. - Michael Riley

2 comments about Miller's: Antiques: Price Guide 2005 (Miller's Antiques Price Guide).

  1. You would get a hernia trying to carry this around to antique malls. This book weights at least 5 lbs.

It is well laid out with a section on how to use the book. Most of the pictures are black and white with special designated sections called "Colour Review". There is a periods and styles chart. And lots of advertisements with phone numbers. Various disciplines are covered; some are Irish antiques, carousel animals, Poole pottery, majolica, and ceramics, and French provincial furniture.

I actually obtained it for the section on glass. There are several good descriptions and trademark displays. It mostly targets 18th and 19th century glass. I would like it more if this book had described production methods. However it does cover what it promised "Prices"

  2. I think the book shows a lot about antiques and good price guides.

5 comments about Renovating Old Houses.

  1. I am working on an old house restoration and from my reading this book has useful and sage advice. It is not a beginners guide and does not waste time explaining tools and materials other than to point you to more complete sources of information. A very useful book for the intermediate woodworker or builder taking on an old house project.

  2. Fantastic, comprehensive book on old house restoration as well as maintenance. This one book contains more useful real-world information than a whole shelf's worth of those Home Depot, Black & Decker, etc. DIY books. And it's all delivered with intelligence, character and an occaisional dose of humor. This is a must have for anyone restoring or renovating and old house, living in and maintaining an old house and would be especially helpful to anyone who is about to 'go shopping' for an old house!

  3. in Kansas City. He read one chapter and pronounced it a collossal time saver, a validation of techniques he has heard from "old timers" in the craft, valued the colloquial and earthy writing style.
He especially appreciated the details on plasterwork, tile, window frames, rim joists and other esoterica.
I have given him many many books, and this won the Best Book Gift Ever award. That is saying quite a lot.

  4. If I had to recommend just one book on renovating old houses it would be this one. Like most similar Taunton Press books, the book is accurate, well written, and informative about techniques that a real person might want to use. It includes lots of information about how old houses are constructed, the kinds of things that tend to go wrong with them over time, and techniques for fixing them. It is realistic about budgets and time constraints. And, perhaps most important, it gives fair warning about the stresses and strains of living in a house one is fixing up.

One might want to supplement this book with more specific books about the kind of house you are working on, and books which provide more information about how to match materials and aesthetics to the existing fabric of the particular sort of house you have, but this book is not to be missed.

  5. I believe this is the greatest book to read first in any attempt to restore and older home. Most homes relate to the late 1800's, but is revealing even for homes built in the early 1900's. Much detail from foundation to roof on restoring any part of an old cherised home for the do - it -yourselfer.
