1 comments about World's Greatest Auto Show: Celebrating a Century in Chicago (Automotive History and Personalities).

  1. If you love cars, you'll love this book ... even if you've never been within a day's drive of Chicago. The book includes hundreds of fascinating professional photos of dream cars, show cars and production models that appeared at the Chicago Auto Show during the past century. It also neatly blends in plenty of intriguing details about the organization and promotion of one of America's best auto shows. This annual event's history is an interesting saga that reflects the ups and downs of American life during the 20th century. From the early horseless carriages to the grand classics of the '30s and the muscle cars of the '60s, and right up to the concept cars of recent shows, this book includes them all. The authors clearly know their stuff -- captions for the photos (most of which have never been published before in an enthusiast book) are accurate and informative. I have hundreds of cars books, but for sheer browsing enjoyment, this is absolutely one of the best.

5 comments about Good Gifts from the Home: Soaps, Shampoos & Other Suds: Make Beautiful Gifts to Give (or Keep) (Good Gifts from the Home).

  1. This book is great for kids, or for those who enjoy "remilling" soaps. It wasn't what I was expecting, but still a good book. It is good for those that don't want to measure out lye, but I would recommend you look elsewhere if you are looking to make soap from scratch.

  2. From the eyes of a beginner this book is great because most of the recipes don't cost a bundle or contain harmful chemicals like lye. (I dont think I want to experiment with lye just yet). This book also has ideas that are inexpensive and easy to follow. "Die-hard" soap makers that believe in only absolutly made-from-scratch recipes will most definatly not apprieciate this book. Many of the recipes start from store bought soap and shampoo which in my opinion does not reduce the quality of the end results. The things in this book are great for presents. I've actually have been asked by one of my friends if I would sell some of the things I make at her store!

  3. Kelly Reno's book is great for beginners. It has simpler recipes where one doesn't have to buy all types of exotic ingredients. I especially liked the section on melt and pour soap recipes using glycerin soap. This is a great project for kids and for those who are a little hesitant to work with lye!

  4. You can really be creative by using Kelly's base recipes and customizing them to your exact tastes for color and fragrance. We made all our Christmas gifts to rave reviews and the all natural ingredients are safe for the kids to use.

  5. I was excited when I read this book I quickly started looking for the ingredients to make my first soap. It was easy to make and very nice.

I am, although, having a hard time locating shampoo concentrate for the shampoo recipes.

  1. The book was full of nice tips and information on general caring/storing of collections. However I found it too general, and in most cases, with topics/items that I am very much interested in, the information is too general that it is not much help for me. There was clearly lack of more indepth information on papermoney and coin as well as Toy collections. As well as not much information on how and where to purchase containers and other means of storage. The book I received also did not have the same cover as showed in the webpage, though title and author was the same.

  2. Whether a novice just beginning to acquire a special collection of their own, or the seasoned antique dealer, Caring For Your Antiques & Collectibles is packed with practical information that is essential to protect and care for treasured artifacts in a professional and effective manner. These are time-tested techniques practiced by museum curators, auction house experts, conservators, and restorers and offer a wealth of tips for identifying, treating, and preventing damage to antiques and collectibles made from a wide variety of materials. Whether collecting for your own satisfaction, or professionally for commercial or public display, begin by a careful reading of Caring For Your Antiques & Collectibles.

  1. Having watched Judith Katz-Schwartz in MD for years, I was so happy to find this book through Jewel Collect! I think her tips and tricks are most useful, and certainly pertain to those of us who collect and sell costume jewelry, collectibles, and antiques. I have used this book almost daily for research and tips and caring for my treasures and those who go to collectors. I'm looking forward to many more by this wonderful author!

  2. I used the idea of alumunum foil, baking soda and salt on my silver. Got out stuff that I'd not been able to clean in years.
Great idea for large pieces, or doing a set of flatware all at once.

  3. I loved this book! I loved Ms. Katz-Schwartz on Personal FX.....it was one of the saddest times when that show went off of the air.
Here is a chance to get reacquainted!
I thought I would put this book on the shelf as a reference, and I will, but when I started leafing through it, I had to read it all......it was a good afternoon's entertainment.
How nice to get a "two-fer"......a practical reference, and a good read all in one. Thanks from Las Vegas, the land of "two-fers"!

  4. Great, Great, Great, for the beginner or the novice..Teriffic stories and photos, very informative, down to earth, and easy to read..What more can one say.. Buy it, Buy it, Buy it.

5 comments about Good Gifts from the Home: Oils, Lotions & Other Luxuries: Make Beautiful Gifts to Give (or Keep) (Good Gifts from the Home).

  1. This book has some good recipes, but not as many along the lines of what I was looking for. I stick mainly to organic and natural recipes, and this book does not have as many along those lines. That is why I gave it 3 stars...but for those who don't mind as much with the ingredients they use, this is a pretty good book.

  2. This book is probably as helpful as her other book that I bought. None of the recipes work. Kelly would have you believe that adding 1/2 teaspoon of table salt to 1/4 cup of shampoo concentrate and 3/4 cup of distilled water will be transformed into a product that you would be delighted to use. You are also expected to be able to grate a bar of Ivory soap (highly improbable that you will succeed). The Ivory soap is to be mixed with other ingredients to end up with a product you will be happy to give or to use.
I have bought many books on soapmaking and other bath and body products.
There is nothing in this book that makes it worth the $12.00 that I spent. Save your money and look for books written by authors who really have excellent credentials regarding bath and body products one can make at home.
One author I particularly like is Susan Miller Cavitch.
Other authors I would highly recommend are Ann Bramson,Norma Coney, and Melinda Coss
I would not even give this book a 1 star rating; actually a minus 5 would be closer to how annoyed and disgusted I was by the book I bought.

  3. Kelly Reno has done a great job of writing books that are helpful for those just starting out. It is amazing that you can make your own lotions and change the scents to match yourself or your friends. The lotions are heavy and greasy, but I think its because our idea of lotions are those that are so heavy with lotions (with alcohols) that we expect it to soak right in instead of using the healing properties of the oils.

The bath beads turned out great. My first batch was great, but all the rest (go figure) I had to add a little more dry product to it so it wasn't so sticky. Its like cooking, its all an experiment and you just have to "season" it the way you like it.

    Highly reccommended!

  4. A great little book of recipes to pamper body and soul. Good recipes with readily available ingredients and easy to follow directions. The end results appear almost as if by magic.

  5. I find the the lotion and cream recipes to be far too heavy and greasy. Also, the solid rose and milk bath tablets did not work well when actually used in the bath. I get the impression that the recipes need some adjustment.
