3 comments about Jeff Wall (Contemporary Artists).

  1. The images shown in this publication is not his best work.
I was very disappointed by the selection of work. The essay is way too long, trying to justify the images.
Much of the work is dark and gloomy.
I remember images of Jeff's being more whimsical and interesting,
but few are shown in this publication.
I would consider some of his earlier publications if I was you.

  2. If you are interested in Jeff Wall's work this is an essential accompaniment to the 2007 retrospective exhibit being shown in NY, Chicago, and SF. It has a great deal of interesting background information that attendees will not otherwise receive.

So if you're a Jeff Wall fan see the exhibit if at all possible. No book can replicate the experience of seeing these enormous transparencies. But even if you can't see the exhibit get this accompanying catalog.

  3. A great book about a great artist, in a great series of "Phaidon" dedicated to contemporary art. Not easy to read, but worth it. The debate about Jeff Wall's art (in which wall himself is an importent participent) encompasses many fundamental questions and notions regarding new art history, post-modernism and society at the end of this century. A must for contemporary art lovers.

5 comments about Only Opal.

  1. This story is about the life of a little girl named Opal who loves nature. Her mother and father died and went to Heaven. Just by looking at the pictures you can tell that she has a sad life. Her new mama is not very nice. Opal has a favorite tree that she loves. The tree is called Michael Raphael. He has an understanding soul. She also has a sweet dog named Brave Horatius. My favorite part is when Opal writes about her feelings. Kids who like to relax will like this book because it has soothing words. It has really great illustrations, too! This is a terrific story!

  2. The "point" of the picture book edition of Opal's diary is to make it accessible to younger readers. I would not hand a young child Boulton's longer edition or _The Singing Creek Where the Willows Grow_, whereas any Barbara Cooney book can be recommended to young children without reservations.

That said, this edition is satisfying in itself. The book is touching and beautifully illustrated and unique. I recommend it highly, along with the other editions of the diary and everything else illustrated by Barbara Cooney.

  3. Opal Whitely's story is an utterly amazing thing in every respect. Her life as a child, her exquisite sensitivity, and her way of expressing herself -- it's all just amazing.

That said, I don't understand this version! Compared to Jane Boulton's original adaptation (if that's what you'd call it), "Opal, Journal of an Understanding Heart," this seems gutted and meaningless. Maybe it's meant to be less sad for young children, I don't know. Read the original version.

  4. This book is extrtemely touching and sweet. I highly reccomend this to everyone I will ever meet. I've read countless numbers of books in my life, but none stuck in my head as well as this. READ IT READ IT READ IT!!

5 comments about North to Cree Lake: The Rugged Lives of the Trappers Who Leave Civilization Behind (Western Canadian Classics).

  1. I originally obtained this book through interlibrary loan several years ago. Now it has been reprinted so I bought my own copy and read it again. I've gone on canoeing trips in this beautiful area of Saskatchewan.

When the author and his older brother were in their late teens they went north to become trappers for seven years rather than try to find work during the Depression. Each chapter deals with a different aspect of life in the bush such as trapping, the meals they ate, the indians, bears, etc.

A.L. Karras also wrote "Face the North Wind", also about trapping in northern Saskatchewan. This is also a fine book that has been reprinted.

  2. I LOVED THIS BOOK,it was one of the few that I got upset over because it ended. I could of kept reading and found myself wanting more. Luckily he has another book that I will get my hands on. Being a Saskatchewan resident, I was familiar with alot of the lakes and towns that he lived and traveled. (Camping at several of the lakes he mentioned)

I enjoyed his writing style, decriptions and stories, which take place in the far north during the 1930's. I loved the fact that he went off memory and when he remembered no more about a paticular experiance, he moved on to the next memory. He just told it like it was. I felt like I could see everything through his eyes, feel the cold they endured, and the "pin drop" quiet of the north. I would highly recommend this book!

  3. Art Karras' book, about he and his brothers trapping career in northern Saskatchewan is quite factual and certainly illustrates the trials and tribulations faced by the old-time trappers and adventurers in the 1920s and 1930s....

  4. Will be enjoyed by anyone who likes to read about life in the wilderness as it was about 60 years ago. A very matter of fact book that I found very interesting .

  5. I read this book while working on a mineral exploration survey in Northern Saskatchewan in 1974. The author and his brother preceded me by some 50-80 years. However many things about this wonderful part of Canada had not changed and it was easy to identify and imagine being with these fellows as they learned how to live and trap in the bush.... The writing is quite plain; but as the events are real they carry the book... (imagine your bro going lala while you are 500 miles away from the nearest civilizatioin...) Highly reconmended for anyone who loves the wilderness and adventure.... I believe I still have a copy kicking around here somewhere... Does anyone know how many copies where printed?
