1. I found this book as an early collector of Chinese Snuff Bottles, and I certainly do not think there could be a better source book for either early or indeed continuing collectors. It gave me the insight, history and breadth of knowledge that I was looking for. This book should be a must in every Snuff Bottle collectors armament.

1. The publication of Willy's book marks a major milestone in the field of black-glass collecting. It is the first real effort at a comprehensive and authoritative guide on European bottles aimed at a broad English-reading audience worldwide. For years, collectors and others have waited for just such a book to appear. The numerous colour photos are outstanding. The text is clear, to the point, and easy to read. Any collector, no matter where he lives or what he collects, will, after reading the book, be able to pursue his passion in a much more informed way. I highly recommend the book, which should be on the book shelf of every serious bottle collector and student of historical glass containers.

1. This is the book to indulge in envy! Most of the collection pictured and written about is unavailable to the average collector, however it is a visual feast and the text about the perfumiers is informative. I do not regret having purchased this book and look upon the contents as my "wish list" or holy grail of perfume bottle collecting.



2. This book is a visual feast for the eyes. The photos of the perfume bottles are wonderful and can make perfume bottle collectors drool with the possibilities. This book can serve as a great educator to the types and eras of the bottles. I believe I have the earlier version of this book because I could not find a referenced photo (from the 1997 book) in my book. I found several bottles from my collection and I have selected a few bottles after finding them in the book. The section on patents of the various bottles has also helped me date several bottles. The price list section is helpful but I'm sure it is outdated. It has helped me when I bid on-line for a bottle to insure I have not drastically under or over bid. My only criticism would be that many of the bottles are very exclusive, rare and very expensive bottles that the beginning collector could not hope to possess. It would also be helpful to have a few more of the brand name perfumes from the past. Nevertheless, I have never regretted purchasing this book and I would recommend this to any collector.



3. The photographs in this book are outstanding. It is well written and has an excellent price guide. I thought too much space was taken up with vintage perfume ads. Some perfume collectors also collect vintage ads, but there was no price guide for these ads. I think without a price guide it was just filler.

1. Wonderful just what I wanted to expand my knowledge now that I am a member of IPBA. Colour plate are beautiful and so much information.



2. This is absolutely the BEST book available on Czech Perfume Bottles. The variety shown is astonishing and the designs are beautiful. Color photos show bottles and details. Good research and historic information. I found more than I expected and am delighted with my purchase!!!



3. A beautiful book to look at (the photos are amazingly detailed) & facinating to read, even if you are not a collector. This book will transport you to another (more elegant) era.

1. Very enjoyable read. Brief, but succinct in discussion of the bottle types recovered from the wreck. Provides interesting history of the various bottle types. Great photography of the recovered treasures. I read it in a couple of hours. Can't wait for Oddysey to publish more on their discoveries and recoveries. Be sure to read The Lost Gold of the Republic for an excellent presentation of the history and discovery of the SS Republic and the development of the Oddysey Marine Company. It was extremely well written and an enjoyable read. Both books are highly recommended for the shipwreck buff or treasure collector.

"Bottles from the Deep" is, I think, the first published (in the paper sense) product of Odyssey Marine Exploration's impressive archaeological excavation of the steamship Republic, and doubtless it will not be the last. Some archaeologists shrink from the idea of a marine salvage firm doing good archaeology, but with the Republic Odyssey has shown how it can be done; the Republic fieldwork is a model for deep-ocean archaeological investigation. What remains is to see how the data recovered are used and shared with the profession and the public. Ellen Gerth's book suggests that Odyssey will do well in this regard, too. The book provides a concise summary of the history of the shipwreck and its excavation, and then plunges into fascinating details about the various types represented among the thousands of bottles recovered. Stephen Sweet's Infallible Liniment, Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup -- it's amazing our ancestors survived the 19th century swilling such stuff. Very handsomely illustrated, Gerth's little book is a contribution to the archaeological literature that's fun to read. Not too big to be a stocking stuffer for one's favorite bottle nut, either.
