2 comments about Peepers the Talking Starling.

  1. While I can appreciate the authors' love for this bird, I have to say their book is a real mess. Hardly a page goes by without one or more, and often SEVERAL, glaring spelling, grammar, or punctuation errors. And I'm talking HUGE errors, like something you would see in an essay written by a ten-year-old. It's not just nit-picky of me -- I truly can't enjoy reading the written word when I am constantly having to come out of the story, mentally, and think "wow, another thing the editor missed."

From a story-telling standpoint, I feel the book falters as well. The authors discuss their life with Peepers only briefly. The balance of the book contains letters they received after Peepers' passing (most of which letters recounted the same exact memories, such that it was highly repetitive) as well as a bizarre "fable" penned by the author. This fable was marred by the repeated reference to a line from the nursery rhyme "Sing a Song of Sixpence". The author mangles the reference, repeatedly and mistakenly quoting the rhyme as "ten and twenty blackbirds" when of course it is, famously, "four and twenty blackbirds".

Look, I would not be this harsh if this were not a genre of which I am extremely fond. I have a Listmania list all about books like this. But I just can't let it go unmentioned that this book, for twelve bucks, has seen not one minute of editing or researching and does not provide its reader with even a passable reading experience. You don't get a book; you get a very rough draft.

Plus, for whatever unfathomable reason, the typeface is in something like 24pt. I suppose had it been a normal size, the book would have come in at something like 30 pages and hardly marketable.

    My two cents.

  2. This is a wonderful book to buy if you are a bird lover. If you never knew that Starlings have the incredible ability to talk and mimic, you will be in for a real treat! We love our animal friends to be like people, and Peepers was indeed a amazing little soul. You'll love this little book!

4 comments about Guide to Owning Amazon Parrots: Breeding, Feeding, Training, Habits, Health, Choosing.

  1. As with almost all TFH Publications, the books are woefully outdated and contain erroneous information. You are better off with the more recently published books by Barron's Educational Series or Howell House (John Wiley). TFH's book are a waste of money.

  2. I was shocked at some of the unbelievably bad advice in this book. I worry about the woman who said she learned all she needed to know about her amazon - if she thinks she did she needs to find some real information so that she can care for her amazon correctly. Aside from the basic info that applies to most parrots there is so much bad info that it totally baffled me.

  3. The book don't contain informations really useful: the text could refer to many other parrot species. The photographs are very good, but the legends are so incomplete that it is not possible to use the illustrations to identify the amazons species shown.

  4. If you want an amazon that is well trained, healthy, and a great pet, this book is a must-have. It helped me understand everything I would have questioned before buying an amazon parrot. An all around excellent book!

3 comments about Conures.

  1. Quite a nice book to read but so far out of date to really be a waste of time for the breeder or anybody seriously considering breeding conures. The Author had not heard of DNA sexing which is now the considered norm. This fact immediately made the book obsolete as far as I was concerned.

  2. This is a good book in some of it's own ways. I think it should have more info about each of the different conures. I own a pair of green cheeks and they are not rare nor are they expensive. They are the cheapest of the conures. Also they are really sweet and not loud at all. They do get nippy in thier older age. The over all of the book was pretty nice though.

  3. I found this book was very nice to have before I got my Peachfront, it was very informative about the different species and their desirable and undesirable traits. It also helped to decide what cage and supplies to buy. Don't let this be your sole source of information, however, after getting your conure.

  1. Very informative book for the beginner and not so beginner.Takes you into understandable detail about breeding and genetics of budgerigars.Though the book is a bit outdated(78)and doesn't cover the newer mutations(such as spangles)it is still quite informative. There are color photos for identifying the different color types, and BW photos of the different stages of the chicks.I would recommend this book to a beginner breeder.

  1. The Pet Parrott Book is a colorful, extremely well-written, and kind treatment, offering both novice and experienced parrott companions thoughtful advice. Highly recommended.

  2. Dr. Snyder's book is both informational and fun! His writing style makes it easy to read and understand for the layman. I would strongly suggest this book for both new and potential parrot owners as a great foundation for their future parrot libraries!
