5 comments about The Complete Pet Bird Owner's Handbook.

  1. This is one of the most complete bird care books. It really should be in every bird owners home.

  2. An excellent book that is easy to use as a reference and has the most current thinking on the correct way to care and feed birds.

  3. This book was purchased for historical purposes only to see how far we have come in aviculture.

I caution any new pet bird owner looking for a owner's handbook on birds to buy a CURRENT book--this is very important. Spend the extra dollars for the most updated information. Many things have changed over the years.

  4. As the title indicates, this book is "complete". Dr. Gallerstein starts off with a chapter to really make a person think about whether a pet bird would be right for you. If the answer to this is "yes", he then goes on to help you decide which bird you should be looking for - age, size, noise level, how to pick a healthy bird, etc.

He gives a brief description of several types of birds, indicating where they live in the wild, their size, noise level, age at maturity, activity level, playfulness, destructiveness, cuddliness, talking potential, biting potential and whether they are good for first-time bird owners. He also gives the potential life span for these birds.

Dr. Gallerstein then talks about bringing your new bird home. He gives some excellent examples of the "do's and the don'ts" to help a bird owner introduce a new bird into the household. He talks about what causes stress & how to reduce stress as well as the daily care and the weekly care required for this bird and a few time saving tips to help you out.

The chapter on proper caging & furnishings provides plenty of information to help you make a decision about what is required for birds ranging from finches, canaries & budgies to the macaws. There is even a shopping list provided so that you don't forget anything when you go to the pet supply store to pick out your bird's accessories.

The nutrition chapter covers information for new bird owners as well as experienced bird owners. Dr. Gallerstein explains what should be fed to your bird as well as why so you will have a good reason to start making changes in your bird's diet, if you haven't been following this advice. This chapter ends with some wonderful recipes.

At some point, you are going to have to hold your bird and the chapter on bird restraint explains how to do this for the various sized birds. Dr. Gallerstein then moves nicely into the chapter on grooming with detailed pictures to help with his descriptions.

Safety for your bird is important & information is provided regarding young children, other pets (including other birds) and household dangers. Everyone wants a well-behaved parrot and Dr. Gallerstein leads both new & experienced parrot owners through some very informative suggestions and ideas.

The chapter titled Avian Anatomy and Physiology has extremely interesting information including colour photographs of normal and not so normal parrot droppings.

Home Physicals and Veterinary Care are both chapters that provide information for experienced pet bird owners as well as the new bird owner and should really be read more than once to help you remember all the important information in it.

Another valuable chapter is titled Medical Emergencies and it starts off with a list indicating which emergencies are life threatening, which require veterinary attention within the day & which can wait until the next day for treatment. Each of the emergencies is then discussed in more detail throughout the chapter.

This is an excellent book for both new and experienced bird owners that I highly recommend.

  5. We give this book to all our adoptive candidates, and we test them on their knowledge before they take home a bird from The Gabriel Foundation. We order cases of this book! It is the most comprehensive bird book out there. There are more in depth books on behavior, species, medicine, etc, but if you are only getting one book **which you shouldn't do- there are many great parrot books and the more you know*** this is a fine choice. The list of safe woods is invaluable.

5 comments about Why Do Parakeets Do That?: Real Answers to the Curious Things Parakeets Do.

  1. Book provides some useful information in an entertaining, humorous format. Very good for children, and adults with only a minor interest in the behavior of parakeets. Not an in-depth guide, but a lot of interesting information packed into a 15-30 minute read. Highly recommended.

  2. This book is a total waste of time and money. It tells you nothing more and considerably less than a $2.00 pamphlet like book from any variety store. The author seems to think they are very cute and clever. They are wrong! Don't waste your money on this thing.

  3. This book has adorable and hilarious illustrations. While the info is true, I would recommend this for beginning budgie owners only. The book was a little smaller than I expected, but all in all, it's a fun book that can help answer questions you may have had for a long time. Happy Reading! :-)

  4. If you've ever had a bird, you know they can be, well, odd birds! I was in the pet store the other day and saw this book. Got it on a whim because we have two Parakeets. My wife and I sat on our couch with it and went "bird watching" for a while. The book is so right on. Now if I could just get a book called Why Does Your Wife Do That?

  5. This book is very cute and well written. There's just enough info here, but it doesn't try to tell you every single thing about parakeets, though if you love parakeets you'll get a kick out of the illustrations. I have another parakeet book by this author and that one has more info in it. Anyway, I really liked this book!

5 comments about The Guide to Owning a Quaker Parrot (Guide to Owning).

  1. Have been pleased with the quality and content of information; good resource guide for new Quaker parrot owners.

  2. If you are researching the Quaker, as a previous bird owner, this may not be the book for you. However, if you are a first time bird owner, I would give it 5 stars. I would have preferred more specific species information. Thank you.

  3. i ordered this book and received it long before i even expected. the book is in like - new condition. i recommend this seller to anyone who wants quick service and you get exactly what they are advertising.

  4. Great pictures, makes you want to run right out and purchase your parrot! Very informative also. I enjoyed it.

  5. If you are oriented towards a quaker but don't know much about parrots yet, this book is the best to have a quick resume of everything is important to know. Takes little time to read it all but at the end your ideas will be a lot clearer, you'll know the essential to make your decision about getting a companion quaker or not; and in case you've decided to go for it, the essential to take care of your quaker and make it healthy and happy. In a second time you can deepen in your knowledge with more complex (but potentially confusing for a novice) books on the subject.
The text is quite objective about the level of attention and cares they require but... *beware*, the photos are so endearing that you are not much likely to resist the urge to get one of this cute and intelligent birds right away and start cuddling it...

2 comments about Taking Care of Your Parakeet (A Young Pet Owners Guide).

  1. This is a very good book! It gives you so much information on topics you never thought would happen! I am getting a parakeet, and this was the book for me. It gave loads of background information that is very helpful in getting a paprkeet! It has hints on getting the right cage, good food, excercise, and loads of other information that is very helpful. If you are thinking about getting a parakeet, this would definatly be the best book to use.

  2. This is a great book for a young person to read or have read to them before you all decide whether a parakeet is right for your famaily. This book very simply shows a child or an adult if a prakeet is right for them, it also tells one how to plan for your bird, what you will need(cage, food, toys, vitamins, etc)before you even bring your bird home, how to take care of it, how to tame it, how to breed. All of this information is explained with detail yet very easy to understand, my child and I read it together in less than a half hour, and now we know we have a lot more to think about and plan before we purchase our bird. I would recommend this book to anyone thinking of purchase a parakeet for a child or even an adult. It is really a must read!

5 comments about Cockatiels (Complete Pet Owner's Manual).

  1. I am a recent cockatiel owner and this book helped answer many of my questions. I refer to the book often and it has been invaluable.

  2. Though I have owned three Budgies before, I had never previously owned a Cockatiel,(I recently bought two) so I bought this book to learn a little more about them. It was a good, basic book, but I would not recommend this book to a seasoned owner, as they would almost most certainley not learn anything new. I would, however, recommend this book to a first time bird owner, as they would learn a great deal.

  3. I'm a new cockatiel owner my husband got it for me for a birthday present actually early birthday present. I have read and re read the book over and over again. I still enjoy it.Also I look for information on cockatiels on the internet so I feel pretty well set on information I need.I got the bird on August 13,2001 from a breeder in town. He's a emerald cockatiel which is a recessive gene mutation. His name is Tristan Jade and I call him "Jade" for short.I have really enjoyed him tremendously :)Cockatiels are amazing birds! This book has all the things I needed to know.If you miss something then you can look it up in the index at the back of the book or read the pages over. You will see something you missed.

  4. If you've owned cockatiels for a long time, this book is not for you. But if you're just beginning, like me, this book gives a great overview of all the things you need to consider when buying and taking care of a cockatiel. This book gives you basic information about feeding, maintenance, and characteristics of this great bird. By giving a brief and user friendly introduction to cockatiels, the author allows you to find the areas which require additional research based on your situation. Overall I'd say this book deserves an A++.

  5. For some great advice email me at humorgirl86@hotmail.com. I have owned a cockatiel for 8 years and have alot of expierience. This book is informative on housing, feeding, breeding and healing. It has great pictures but, it's not the pictures that make the book it's the words! It doesn't go into great detail about everything. It hardly has a page on training and that doesn't even help if at all. Sure it may seem good but once you read it, it really isn't that good at all. I say that you should go to the pet store or book store and actually read the book or scan it to make sure that it has what you want. Petsmart and Petco are great pet stores that have plenty of books and all the needs for a cockatiel.

5 comments about A New Owner's Guide to Lovebirds (New Owners Guide).

  1. This book is very helpful, has lots of good information and the descriptions of so many different Lovebirds is also very informative. I enjoy this book very much and would recommend it to anyone interested in getting a lovebird.

  2. I am thrilled with this book. It has given a lot of insight. I recently became the owner of our new lovebird, Peachy. My children (4 and 20 months) LOVE to look through this book with me at the beautiful pictures. It is organized very well, and the information is useful. I find myself referencing this book quite often. Thanks :)

  3. Searching for information to take care of my newly acquired small flock of lovebirds I found this book. With 160 pages it contains sufficient information, although not extremely detailed. It is indeed an excellent guide for those who begin to raise and take care of these lovely birds. Beautiful pictures, a good layout and hard cover make it a very handy and useful book, well worth its modest price.

  4. I do not own a lovebird and had never owned any pet bird at all, but I had received this book as a gift and had read it several times since then! Some of the pictures are beautiful and high in quality, and if I had a lovebird, this book would have all the information I would need, from where to buy a lovebird, to breeding and hand-feeding babies. The endearing traits of lovebirds described in the book, such as an "affectionate lovebird [hiding] in it's human's clothes or underneath long hair" has definitely made me want to own a lovebird as soon as it becomes possible for me.

  5. I've had lovebirds for a few years, and I'm always looking for new information about them. This book is one of the best I've found. The text is clear and the advice is easy to put into practice. The photos are pretty as well. I highly recommend it.
