- This book goes with me everywhere. Many non-specialty auctions have a few paintings worthy of consideration. I find that Theran's book {& several of her other books: on prints, etc,} makes a difference in how I bid. I have definitely been pleased with the results.
- The bulk of the books lists artists' names and price ranges listed by artist, high and low, with a sprinkling of short essays on particular artists. Even more fun and useful are the chapters in the begininng -- Where to Buy Art, Dealing with Dealers, How to Sell, Restoration. They're a neat overview of the problems, pitfalls, and strategies for navigating the art market.
- While Theran's book has an excellent list of artists the price guide is way out of date and a new and updated edition is very definitely needed.

- I found many artists, living that I knew. Many more that I did not know were there. The prices stunned me. One should seek this sort of guide before buying important art works, or art works they simply like. A wealth of information, more could only make it better.

2 comments about The Chase Era: 1933 & 1942 Catalogs of the Chase Brass & Copper Co..
- In this concluding book in a series of four about the history and products of the Chase Copper and Brass Co., the authors present the first (1933) and last (1942) catalogs of Chase's consumer products...and a wonderful surprise. The catalog pictures are crisp and clear, and the contrast between the early and last product offerings can be easily compared. But the first publishing of a series of pre-1933 "flyers" that were Chase's first "catalog" make this a must-have reference for collectors. Nine new pieces are shown, and new, additional information is provided about several other items previously attributed to Chase. Definite 5 star kudos to the the authors, Don Johnson and Leslie Pena, for this wonderful resource.
- This book is the final of four outstanding books by these two accomplished authors. Any Chase collector or deco enthusiast should have them in their reference library. This book features reprints of original 1933 and 1942 Chase catalogs, factory information, and pre-1933 reprints of Chase Specialty flyers, some of which have never been published before. Pictures of newly discovered Chase products will be a great help to Chase collectors in identification of their wares. This book is a must for all those who appreciate the fine craftsmanship that came from the Chase factories. Donald-Brian Johnson and Leslie Pina should be commended for putting together this four part Chase reference set, this book being the final one of the four. Highly recommend!

2 comments about Treasures Of Gilcrease.
- This is a great guide to the Gilcrease collection in Tulsa, OK. After visiting the museum I wanted more and this book filled the bill. It contains a nice collection of pictures of the key pieces, both paintings and sculptures, in the museum as selected by the curators and also contains pictures and postcards from the archives which are not on display all the time. This book adds completion to my visit to this wonderful art collection. This is a nicely produced book with complete descriptions of the pieces presented.
- The Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma houses one of the best, if not the pre-iminent, collections of Western American art in the world. Of the half million or so items in the museum, some 200 have selected by the museum's curators for photographing and presentation in this large format book.
Included are paintings by Catlin, Russell, Moran, and Remington. The front cover of the book is Moran's "Tower Falls" perhaps the single thing that caused the Congress to set aside Yellowstone National Park.
While the subject of the American West may be thought of by some as not suitable for serious work, some of the painting, such as the night time scene of the Pony Express (Frank Tenney Johnson) are of as high a technical quality as can be found anywhere.
A mere book is not the same as visiting the museum, but is about as close as most of us can come.
Beautiful Book!
