2 comments about The Chase Era: 1933 & 1942 Catalogs of the Chase Brass & Copper Co..

  1. In this concluding book in a series of four about the history and products of the Chase Copper and Brass Co., the authors present the first (1933) and last (1942) catalogs of Chase's consumer products...and a wonderful surprise. The catalog pictures are crisp and clear, and the contrast between the early and last product offerings can be easily compared. But the first publishing of a series of pre-1933 "flyers" that were Chase's first "catalog" make this a must-have reference for collectors. Nine new pieces are shown, and new, additional information is provided about several other items previously attributed to Chase. Definite 5 star kudos to the the authors, Don Johnson and Leslie Pena, for this wonderful resource.

  2. This book is the final of four outstanding books by these two accomplished authors. Any Chase collector or deco enthusiast should have them in their reference library. This book features reprints of original 1933 and 1942 Chase catalogs, factory information, and pre-1933 reprints of Chase Specialty flyers, some of which have never been published before. Pictures of newly discovered Chase products will be a great help to Chase collectors in identification of their wares. This book is a must for all those who appreciate the fine craftsmanship that came from the Chase factories. Donald-Brian Johnson and Leslie Pina should be commended for putting together this four part Chase reference set, this book being the final one of the four. Highly recommend!

2 comments about Treasures Of Gilcrease.

  1. This is a great guide to the Gilcrease collection in Tulsa, OK. After visiting the museum I wanted more and this book filled the bill. It contains a nice collection of pictures of the key pieces, both paintings and sculptures, in the museum as selected by the curators and also contains pictures and postcards from the archives which are not on display all the time. This book adds completion to my visit to this wonderful art collection. This is a nicely produced book with complete descriptions of the pieces presented.

  2. The Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma houses one of the best, if not the pre-iminent, collections of Western American art in the world. Of the half million or so items in the museum, some 200 have selected by the museum's curators for photographing and presentation in this large format book.

Included are paintings by Catlin, Russell, Moran, and Remington. The front cover of the book is Moran's "Tower Falls" perhaps the single thing that caused the Congress to set aside Yellowstone National Park.

While the subject of the American West may be thought of by some as not suitable for serious work, some of the painting, such as the night time scene of the Pony Express (Frank Tenney Johnson) are of as high a technical quality as can be found anywhere.

A mere book is not the same as visiting the museum, but is about as close as most of us can come.

    Beautiful Book!

5 comments about Christmas Letters Gone Wild: Everything You Need to Shock Your Friends and Loved Ones.

  1. This book is the funniest thing I've read in years. I hope this author has more writing to be found.

  2. Home made gifts are always the best--except for that time I tried to make an "electric hammer" by gluing a power cord into the handle of a standard-issue ball-peen--and this book shows you how to write the perfect chatty news letter that will have your friends laughing. The letters themselves are funny and can be used as is, or just as valuable, they will spark your own imagination to create your own. Either way, a very useful and clever book. And great gift too.

  3. This is very funny. Comes with a Word Document CD with a bunch of different crazy scenarios into which you can place the names of yourself, your family and loved ones, even your pet, to really turn those annual "catch you up on what's happening" Christmas Letters on their heads. Smart and hysterical.

  4. This book is uproariously funny. Not to be missed.
These letters should be read and used by everyone with a sense of humor. Buy this book - you won't be sorry.

  5. This book is perfect for creating an antidote to any and all of those "bragalogue" Christmas letters that deeply boring people insist on sending each year. Hey, maybe if you send them one of these "wild" letters anonymously they'll even take the hint and save some trees and stamps next year. Of course, it's probably asking too much for them to understand the joke, but that doesn't mean that the rest of us can't! This is a great gift for the merciless and mirthful.

5 comments about A Guide to Zuni Fetishes & Carvings, Volume I: The Animals & The Carvers.

  1. This is a must have book for beginner or established Fetish collectors. It is a great, quick resource. I did not get as much out of the second volume, but this one is a must have.

  2. This book, together with its successor volume, is the ultimate reference guide for the beginning or experienced collector. The author, who is probably the pre-eminent authority on the subject, provides clear, valuable information encompassing various segments of this remarkable art and contemporary artists. If you own or are considering purchasing these intriguing carvings, this little book (and the accompanying Volume II) should be your bible.

  3. This little book (together with Volume II) is the most valuable reference guide on the market today for either the beginning or experienced collector. The author, probably the leading authority on the subject, provides clear, useful information, encompassing various segments of the art and artists, necessary for the understanding and purchase of these remarkable objects. The two books are a joy to read and own.

  4. An excellent guidebook of the wide variety of Zuni fetishes carvings available today. McManis goes into some painstaking detail of Zuni cosmology in the introduction, then gives details on each of the animals that are frequently carved now in Zuni, and finishes the silm volume with a discussion of four Zuni carving families accompanied by genealogical tables and a list of active carvers as of 1998. Photographs are extremely well done, however, there are no close up details of fetishes, given that there are families like the Cheamas and the Kaamasees now producing extraordinarily detailed and lifelike "non-traditional" fetishes. A must have reference for anyone beginning or enhancing a collection of these fascinating carvings. Volume #2 covers the extensive range of materials used and details additional family groupings.

  5. I'm a very, very new collector, so I don't know how applicable my comments would be for experienced collectors. But from the perspective of someone fairly new to, but interested in, Zuni fetishes, this is a marvelous little book. It's full of crystal clear, gorgeous, detailed photos on wonderful paper and just the right amount and variety (for me) of well-written information to whet one's appetite for this fascinating topic.
